Angular distributions in $J/ψ\to p\bar{p}π^{0}(η)$ decays

The differential decay rates of the processes $J/ψ\to p\bar{p}π^{0}$ and $J/ψ\to p\bar{p}η$ close to the $p\bar{p}$ threshold are calculated with the help of the $N\bar{N}$ optical potential. The same calculations are made for the decays of $ψ(2S)$. We use the potential which has been suggested to fit the cross sections of $N\bar{N}$ scattering together with $N\bar{N}$ and six pion production in $e^{+}e^{-}$ annihilation close to the $p\bar{p}$ threshold. The $p\bar{p}$ invariant mass spectra is in agreement with the available experimental data. The anisotropy of the angular distributions, which appears due to the tensor forces in the $N\bar{N}$ interaction, is predicted close to the $p\bar{p}$ threshold. This anisotropy is large enough to be investigated experimentally. Such measurements would allow one to check the accuracy of the model of $N\bar{N}$ interaction.

Real and virtual $N\bar{N}$ pair production near the threshold

Nucleon-antinucleon optical potential, which explains the experimental data for the processes $e^{+}e^{-}\rightarrow p\bar{p}$ and $e^{+}e^{-}\rightarrow\mbox{pions}$ near the threshold of $p\bar{p}$ pair production, is suggested. To obtain this potential we have used the available experimental data for $p\bar{p}$ scattering, $p\bar{p}$ pair production in $e^{+}e^{-}$ annihilation, and the ratio of electromagnetic form factors of a proton in the timelike region. It turns out that final-state interaction via the optical potential allows one to reproduce the available experimental data with good accuracy. Our results for the cross sections of $e^{+}e^{-}\to6π$ process near the threshold of $p\bar{p}$ pair production are in agreement with the recent experiments.

Measurement of the two-photon exchange contribution to the elastic $e^{\pm}p$ scattering cross sections at the VEPP-3 storage ring

The ratio of the elastic $e^+ p$ to $e^- p$ scattering cross sections has been measured precisely, allowing the determination of the two-photon exchange contribution to these processes. This neglected contribution is believed to be the cause of the discrepancy between the Rosenbluth and polarization transfer methods of measuring the proton electromagnetic form factors. The experiment was performed at the VEPP-3 storage ring at beam energies of 1.6 and 1.0 GeV and at lepton scattering angles between $15^\circ$ and $105^\circ$. The data obtained show evidence of a significant two-photon exchange effect. The results are compared with several theoretical predictions.

Isoscalar amplitude dominance in $e^+e-$ annihilation to $N\bar{N}$ pair close to the threshold

We use the Paris nucleon-antinucleon optical potential for explanation of experimental data in the process $e^+e^- \rightarrow p\bar p$ near threshold. It turns out that final-state interaction due to Paris optical potential allows us to reproduce available experimental data. It follows from our consideration that the isoscalar form factor is much larger than the isovector one.

Final state Coulomb interaction and asymmetry of pair production close to threshold in $e^+e^-$ annihilation

We investigate a contribution of the $d$ wave to the cross section of $e^+e^-$ annihilation to the pair of charged leptons or nucleons close to threshold of the process. In contrast to the point of view accepted in literature, due to the Coulomb final state interaction this contribution does not vanish even at zero relative velocity of produced particles. This results in the nonzero asymmetry in angular distribution at threshold. Though value of the asymmetry is small, observation of this effect is not hopeless.

Colour-octet bound states, induced by Higgs mechanism

The current limits for fourth generation quarks allows to expect their mass of the order of 500 GeV. In this mass region for quark-anti-quark pair the additional Yukawa-type attraction due to Higgs mechanism is expected to emerge. This Higgs induced attraction greatly exceeds strong interaction between quarks and leads to the formation of bound states in both colour octet $S^{(8)}$ and singlet $S^{(1)}$ states. In the key of recent works on significance of colour octet channel for production of colour singlet state of fourth generation $Q\bar{Q}$ we calculated the binding energies for both octet and singlet states. Such attraction localizes quarks in extremely small area. Hence colour octet pair of fourth generation quarks can form the "nucleus" and together with colour neutralizing light particle that is captured by strong interaction in orbit around the nucleus, create particle, similar by its structure to Deuterium.

Decays of Fourth Generation Bound States

We consider the decay modes of the heavy $q^\prime\bar{q^\prime}$ bound states originating from Higgs boson exchange between quark -- anti-quark pair. In case of a small coupling between the fourth and lower generation the main decay mode is $q^\prime\bar{q^\prime}$ annihilation. We show that for a vector state the dominant decay modes are Higgs-gamma and Higgs-Z decays, while for a pseudoscalar state the strong two-gluon decay mode dominates. The bound states are very narrow. The ratio of the total width to the binding energy is less than 1% if we are not extremely close to the critical quark mass where the binding energy is very small. The discussed decay modes exist for any fermion-antifermion bound states including heavy leptons and heavy neutrinos if their masses are high enough to form a bound state due to attractive Higgs boson exchange potential.

Measurement of the two-photon exchange contribution in elastic $ep$ scattering at VEPP-3

We report on the status of the Novosibirsk experiment on a precision measurement of the ratio $R$ of the elastic $e^+ p$ and $e^- p$ scattering cross sections. Such measurements determine the two-photon exchange effect in elastic electron-proton scattering. The experiment is conducted at the VEPP-3 storage ring using a hydrogen internal gas target. The ratio $R$ is measured with a beam energy of 1.6 GeV (electron/positron scattering angles are $θ= 55 ÷75^{\circ}$ and $θ= 15 ÷25^{\circ}$) and 1 GeV ($θ= 65 ÷105^{\circ}$). We briefly describe the experimental method, paying special attention to the radiative corrections. Some preliminary results are presented.

Nucleon polarization in the process $e^+e^-\to N\bar{N}$ near threshold

The process $e^+e^- \rightarrow N\bar N$ is studied nearby a threshold with account for polarizations of all initial and final particles. The nucleon polarization $\bm ζ^N$ reveals a strong energy dependence due to that of the nucleon electromagnetic form factors $G_E(Q^2)$ and $G_M(Q^2)$ caused by the final-state interaction of nucleons. It is shown that the modulus of the ratio of these form factors and their relative phase can be determined by measuring $\bm ζ^N$ along with the differential cross section. The polarization degree is analyzed using Paris $N\bar N$ optical potential for calculation of the form factors. It turns out that $|\bm ζ^N|$ is high enough in a rather wide energy range above the threshold. Being especially high for longitudinally polarized beams, $|\bm ζ^N|$ is noticeable even if both $e^+e^-$ beams are unpolarized.

Spin-dependent part of $p\bar{p}$ interaction cross section and Nijmegen potential

Low energy $p\bar{p}$ interaction is considered taking into account the polarization of both particles. The corresponding cross sections are calculated using the Nijmegen nucleon-antinucleon optical potential. Then they are applied to the analysis of the polarization buildup which is due to the interaction of stored antiprotons with polarized protons of a hydrogen target. It is shown that, at realistic parameters of a storage ring and a target, the filtering mechanism may provide a noticeable polarization in a time comparable with the beam lifetime.

Effect of quark-mass variation on big bang nucleosynthesis

We calculate the effect of variation in the light-current quark mass, $m_q$, on standard big bang nucleosynthesis. A change in $m_q$ at during the era of nucleosynthesis affects nuclear reaction rates, and hence primordial abundances, via changes the binding energies of light nuclei. It is found that a relative variation of $δm_q/m_q = 0.016 \pm 0.005$ provides better agreement between observed primordial abundances and those predicted by theory. This is largely due to resolution of the existing discrepancies for 7Li. However this method ignores possible changes in the position of resonances in nuclear reactions. The predicted 7Li abundance has a strong dependence on the cross-section of the resonant reactions 3He(d,p)4He and t(d,n)4He. We show that changes in $m_q$ at the time of BBN could shift the position of these resonances away from the Gamow window and lead to an increased production of 7Li, exacerbating the lithium problem.

$α$-Particle Spectrum in the Reaction p+$^{11}$B$\to α+ ^8Be^*\to 3α$

Using a simple phenomenological parametrization of the reaction amplitude we calculated $α$-particle spectrum in the reaction p+$^{11}$B$\to α+ ^8Be^*\to 3α$ at the resonance proton energy 675 KeV. The parametrization includes Breit-Wigner factor with an energy dependent width for intermediate $^8Be^*$ state and the Coulomb and the centrifugal factors in $α$-particle emission vertexes. The shape of the spectrum consists of a well defined peak corresponding to emission of the primary $α$ and a flat shoulder going down to very low energy. We found that below 1.5 MeV there are 17.5% of $α$'s and below 1 MeV there are 11% of them.

Coulomb energy contribution to the excitation energy in $^{229}$Th and enhanced effect of $α$ variation

We calculated the contribution of Coulomb energy to the spacing between the ground and first excited state of $^{229}$Th nucleus as a function of the deformation parameter $δ$. We show that despite the fact that the odd particle is a neutron, the change in Coulomb energy between these two states can reach several hundreds KeV.This means that the effect of the variation of the fine structure constant $α=e^2/\hbar c$ may be enhanced $ΔU_C/E \sim 10^4$ times in the $E=$7.6 eV "nuclear clock" transition between the ground and first excited states in the $^{229}$Th nucleus.

Measurement of tensor analyzing powers in deuteron photodisintegration

New accurate measurement of tensor analyzing powers T20, T21 and T22 in deuteron photodisintegration has been performed. Wide-aperture non-magnetic detectors allowed to cover broad kinematic ranges in a single setup: photon energy = 25 to 600 MeV, proton emission angle in CM = 24 to 48 deg. and 70 to 102 deg. New data provide a significant improvement of a few existing measurements. The angular dependency of the tensor asymmetries in deuteron photodisintegration is extracted for the first time.

Final State Interaction Effects in the $e^+e^-\to N\bar{N}$ Process near Threshold

We use the Paris nucleon-antinucleon optical potential for explanation of experimental data in the process $e^+e^- \to p\bar p$ near threshold. It is shown that the cross section and the electromagnetic form factors are very sensitive to the parameters of the potential. It turns out that final-state interaction due to slightly modified absorptive part of the potential allows us to reproduce available experimental data. We also demonstrated that the cross section in $n\bar{n}$ channel is larger than that in $p\bar{p}$ one, and their ratio is almost energy independent up to 2.2 GeV.

Nuclear Schiff moment in nuclei with soft octupole and quadrupole vibrations

Nuclear forces violating parity and time reversal invariance (${\cal P},{\cal T}$-odd) produce ${\cal P},{\cal T}$-odd nuclear moments, for example, the nuclear Schiff moment. In turn, this moment can induce the electric dipole moment in the atom. The nuclear Schiff moment is predicted to be enhanced in nuclei with static quadrupole and octupole deformation. The analogous suggestion of the enhanced contribution to the Schiff moment from the soft collective quadrupole and octupole vibrations in spherical nuclei is tested in this article in the framework of the quasiparticle random phase approximation with separable quadrupole and octupole forces applied to the odd $^{217-221}$Ra and $^{217-221}$Rn isotopes. We confirm the existence of the enhancement effect due to the soft modes. However, in the standard approximation the enhancement is strongly reduced by a small weight of the corresponding "particle + phonon" component in a complicated wave function of a soft nucleus. The perspectives of a better description of the structure of heavy soft nuclei are discussed.

On shielding of nuclear electric dipole moments in atoms

We demonstrate explicitly that some recent calculations of atomic electric dipole moments (EDM) are incomplete. A contribution overlooked therein is pointed out. When included, it cancels exactly the result of those calculations, and thus restores the standard conclusions for nuclear EDM in atoms.
