Electron transport in dual-gated three-layer MoS$_2$

The low-energy band structure of few-layer MoS$_2$ is relevant for a large variety of experiments ranging from optics to electronic transport. Its characterization remains challenging due to complex multi band behavior. We investigate the conduction band of dual-gated three-layer MoS$_2$ by means of magnetotransport experiments. The total carrier density is tuned by voltages applied between MoS$_2$ and both top and bottom gate electrodes. For asymmetrically biased top and bottom gates, electrons accumulate in the layer closest to the positively biased electrode. In this way, the three-layer MoS$_2$ can be tuned to behave electronically like a monolayer. In contrast, applying a positive voltage on both gates leads to the occupation of all three layers. Our analysis of the Shubnikov--de Haas oscillations originating from different bands lets us attribute the corresponding carrier densities in the top and bottom layers. We find a twofold Landau level degeneracy for each band, suggesting that the minima of the conduction band lie at the $\pm K$ points of the first Brillouin zone. This is in contrast to band structure calculations for zero layer asymmetry, which report minima at the $Q$ points. Even though the interlayer tunnel coupling seems to leave the low-energy conduction band unaffected, we observe scattering of electrons between the outermost layers for zero layer asymmetry. The middle layer remains decoupled due to the spin-valley symmetry, which is inverted for neighboring layers. When the bands of the outermost layers are energetically in resonance, interlayer scattering takes place, leading to an enhanced resistance and to magneto-interband oscillations.

Edge photocurrent in bilayer graphene due to inter-Landau-level transitions

We report the observation of the resonant excitation of edge photocurrents in bilayer graphene subjected to terahertz radiation and a magnetic field. The resonantly excited edge photocurrent is observed for both inter-band (at low carrier densities) and intra-band (at high densities) transitions between Landau levels (LL). While the intra-band LL transitions can be traced to the classical cyclotron resonance (CR) and produce strong resonant features, the inter-band-LL resonances have quantum nature and lead to the weaker features in the measured photocurrent spectra. The magnitude and polarization properties of the observed features agree with the semiclassical theory of the intra-band edge photogalvanic effect, including its Shubnikov-de-Haas oscillations at low temperatures.

Edge photocurrent driven by THz electric field in bi-layer graphene

We report on the observation of edge electric currents excited in bi-layer graphene by terahertz laser radiation. We show that the current generation belongs to the class of second order in electric field phenomena and is controlled by the orientation of the THz electric field polarization plane. Additionally, applying a small magnetic field normal to the graphene plane leads to a phase shift in the polarization dependence. Increasing the magnetic field strength, the current starts to exhibit 1/B-magnetooscillations with a period consistent with that of the Shubnikov-de-Haas effect and amplitude by an order of magnitude larger as compared to the current at zero magnetic field measured under the same conditions. The microscopic theory developed shows that the current is formed in the edges vicinity limited by the mean-free path of carriers and the screening length of the high-frequency electric field. The current originates from the alignment of the free carrier momenta and dynamic accumulation of charge at the edges, where the P-symmetry is naturally broken. The observed magnetooscillations of the photocurrent are attributed to the formation of Landau levels.

Thermodynamics of localized magnetic moments in a Dirac conductor

We show that the magnetic susceptibility of a dilute ensemble of magnetic impurities in a conductor with a relativistic electronic spectrum is non-analytic in the inverse tempertature at $1/T\to 0$. We derive a general theory of this effect and construct the high-temperature expansion for the disorder averaged susceptibility to any order, convergent at all tempertaures down to a possible ordering transition. When applied to Ising impurities on a surface of a topological insulator, the proposed general theory agrees with Monte Carlo simulations, and it allows us to find the critical temperature of the ferromagnetic phase transition.

Anomalously strong pinning of the filling factor nu=2 in epitaxial graphene

We explore the robust quantization of the Hall resistance in epitaxial graphene grown on Si-terminated SiC. Uniquely to this system, the dominance of quantum over classical capacitance in the charge transfer between the substrate and graphene is such that Landau levels (in particular, the one at exactly zero energy) remain completely filled over an extraordinarily broad range of magnetic fields. One important implication of this pinning of the filling factor is that the system can sustain a very high nondissipative current. This makes epitaxial graphene ideally suited for quantum resistance metrology, and we have achieved a precision of 3 parts in 10^10 in the Hall resistance quantization measurements.
