Heavy holes: precursor to superconductivity in antiferromagnetic CeIn3

Numerous phenomenological parallels have been drawn between f- and d- electron systems in an attempt to understand their display of unconventional superconductivity. The microscopics of how electrons evolve from participation in large moment antiferromagnetism to superconductivity in these systems, however, remains a mystery. Knowing the origin of Cooper paired electrons in momentum space is a crucial prerequisite for understanding the pairing mechanism. Of especial interest are pressure-induced superconductors CeIn3 and CeRhIn5 in which disparate magnetic and superconducting orders apparently coexist - arising from within the same f-electron degrees of freedom. Here we present ambient pressure quantum oscillation measurements on CeIn3 that crucially identify the electronic structure - potentially similar to high temperature superconductors. Heavy pockets of f-character are revealed in CeIn3, undergoing an unexpected effective mass divergence well before the antiferromagnetic critical field. We thus uncover the softening of a branch of quasiparticle excitations located away from the traditional spin-fluctuation dominated antiferromagnetic quantum critical point. The observed Fermi surface of dispersive f-electrons in CeIn3 could potentially explain the emergence of Cooper pairs from within a strong moment antiferromagnet.

Non-local Magnetic Field-tuned Quantum Criticality in Cubic CeIn_{3-x}Sn_x (x=~0.25)

We show that antiferromagnetism in lightly (~8 %) Sn-doped CeIn_3 terminates at a critical field μ_0H_c= 42 \pm 2 T. Electrical transport and thermodynamic measurements reveal that the effective mass $m^\ast$ does not diverge, suggesting that cubic CeIn_3 is representative of a critical spin-density wave (SDW) scenario, unlike the local quantum critical points reported in lower-symmetry systems such as CeCu_{6-x}Au_x and YbRh_2Si_{2-x}Ge_x. The existence of a maximum in m* at a lower field μ_0H_x = 30 \pm 1 T may be interpreted as a field-induced crossover from local moment to SDW behavior as the magnitude of the antiferromagnetic order parameter falls below the Fermi bandwidth.

Irreversible dynamics of the phase boundary in U(Ru0.9)Rh0.04)2Si2 and implications for ordering

We report measurements and analysis of the specific heat and magnetocaloric effect at the phase boundary into the single magnetic field-induced phase (phase II) of U(Ru{0.96}Rh{0.04})2Si2, which yield striking similarities to the valence transition of Yb{1-x}YxInCu4. To explain these similarities, we propose a bootstrap mechanism by which a structural distortion causes an electric quadrupolar order parameter within phase II to become coupled to the 5f-electron hybridization, giving rise to a valence change at the transition.
