Scattering of particles by neutron stars: Time-evolutions for axial perturbations

The excitation of the axial quasi-normal modes of a relativistic star by scattered particles is studied by evolving the time dependent perturbation equations. This work is the first step towards the understanding of more complicated perturbative processes, like the capture or the scattering of particles by rotating stars. In addition, it may serve as a test for the results of the full nonlinear evolution of binary systems.

Gravitational Waves Signals from the Collapse of the First Stars

We study the gravitational wave emission from the first stars which are assumed to be Very Massive Objects (VMOs). We take into account various feedback (both radiative and stellar) effects regulating the collapse of objects in the early universe and thus derive the VMO initial mass function and formation rate. If the final fate of VMOs is to collapse, leaving very massive black hole remnants, then the gravitational waves emitted during each collapse would be seen as a stochastic background. The predicted spectral strain amplitude in a critical density Cold Dark Matter universe peaks in the frequency range \approx 5 \times 10^{-4}-5 \times 10^{-3} Hz where it has a value in the range \approx 10^{-20}-10^{-19} Hz^{-1/2}, and might be detected by LISA. The expected emission rate is roughly 4000 events/yr, resulting in a stationary, discrete sequence of bursts, i.e. a shot--noise signal.

The anomalous metallic ferromagnetic state of Sr doped manganites

We deduce a model relevant for the anomalous metallic state of Sr doped manganites at low temperatures within the ferromagnetic phase. It provides a natural explanation to several anomalous features observed experimentally, such as the vanishing Drude contribution in optical conductivity, the pseudo-gap in the density of states, an the unusual dispersion observed in photoemission.

Stellar Pulsations excited by a scattered mass

We compute the energy spectra of the gravitational signals emitted when a mass m is scattered by the gravitational field of a star of mass M >> m. We show that, unlike black holes in similar processes, the quasi-normal modes of the star are excited, and that the amount of energy emitted in these modes depends on how close the exciting mass can get to the star.

The imprint of the equation of state on the axial w-modes of oscillating neutron stars

We discuss the dependence of the pulsation frequencies of the axial quasi-normal modes of a nonrotating neutron star upon the equation of state describing the star interior. The continued fraction method has been used to compute the complex frequencies for a set of equations of state based on different physical assumptions and spanning a wide range of stiffness. The numerical results show that the detection of axial gravitational waves would allow to discriminate between the models underlying the different equation of states, thus providing relevant information on both the structure of neutron star matter and the nature of the hadronic interactions.

Bistability of persistent currents in mesoscopic rings

We study the persistent currents flowing in a mesoscopic ring threaded by a magnetic flux and connected to a stub of finite length. Multistability processes and Coulomb blockade are demonstrated to be present in this system. These properties are functions of the magnetic flux crossing the ring which plays the role that the external applied potential fulfills in the multistability behaviour of the standard mesoscopic heterostructures.

Fractional Aharonov-Bohm effect in mesoscopic rings

We study the effects of correlations on a one dimensional ring threaded by a uniform magnetic flux. In order to describe the interaction between particles, we work in the framework of the U $\infty$ Hubbard and $t$-$J$ models. We focus on the dilute limit. Our results suggest the posibility that the persistent current has an anomalous periodicity $ϕ_{0}/p$, where $p$ is an integer in the range $2\leq p\leq N_{e}$ ($N_{e}$ is the number of particles in the ring and $ϕ_{0}$ is the flux quantum). We found that this result depends neither on disorder nor on the detailed form of the interaction, while remains the on site infinite repulsion.
