About possibility to observe spin dichroism effect (the effect of tensor polarization acquiring) for the effect of tensor polarization acquiring by a nonpolarized deuteron beam passing through the nonpolarized internal target of Nuclotron

Deuteron passage through a nonpolarized target is accompanied by birefringence effect which reveals as diverse phenomena, namely: rotation of spin and tensor polarization about the momentum direction, spin oscillations, vector polarization conversion to tensor that and vice versa, spin dichroism. Possibility to study deuteron spin dichroism effect i.e. the effect of tensor polarization acquiring by a nonpolarized deuteron beam moving in NuclotronM and passing through its internal target is discussed.

A highly-compact and ultra-fast homogeneous electromagnetic calorimeter based on oriented lead tungstate crystals

Progress in high-energy physics has been closely tied to the development of highperformance electromagnetic calorimeters. Recent experiments have demonstrated the possibility to significantly accelerate the development of electromagnetic showers inside scintillating crystals typically used in homogeneous calorimeters based on scintillating crystals when the incident beam is aligned with a crystallographic axis to within a few mrad. In particular, a reduction of the radiation length has been measured when ultrarelativistic electron and photon beams were incident on a high-Z scintillator crystal along one of its main axes. Here, we propose the possibility to exploit this physical effect for the design of a new type of compact e.m. calorimeter, based on oriented ultrafast lead tungstate (PWO-UF) crystals, with a significant reduction in the depth needed to contain electromagnetic showers produced by high-energy particles with respect to the state-of-the-art. We report results from tests of the crystallographic quality of PWO-UF samples via high-resolution X-ray diffraction and photoelastic analysis. We then describe a proof-of-concept calorimeter geometry defined with a Geant4 model including the shower development in oriented crystals. Finally, we discuss the experimental techniques needed for the realization of a matrix of scintillator crystals oriented along a specific crystallographic direction. Since the angular acceptance for e.m. shower acceleration depends little on the particle energy, while the decrease of the shower length remains pronounced at very high energy, an oriented crystal calorimeter will open the way for applications at the maximum energies achievable in current and future experiments. Such applications span from forward calorimeters, to compact beam dumps for the search for light dark matter, to source-pointing space-borne γ-ray telescopes.

Klystron type X-ray crystal-based Volume Free Electron Laser (XVFEL)

Typical parameters of electron bunches available now in undulator X-ray FELs enable generation of induced radiation in crystal-based X-ray VFEL. An important peculiarity of an undulator X-ray FEL is electron bunch spatial modulation with the period equal to the wavelength of the produced radiation. Therefore, XFEL can be considered as a modulator of electron bunch density. As a result a facility combining an undulator, which produced a modulated beam, and a crystal, on which the modulated beam is incident, can be considered to be similar to klystron, which is a well-known source for microwaves emission. Use of pre-modulated beams enables to generate and observe superradiation and induced radiation in a crystal-based X-ray VFEL.

Strong enhancement of electromagnetic shower development induced by high-energy photons in a thick oriented tungsten crystal

We have observed a significant enhancement in the energy deposition by $25$--$100~\mathrm{GeV}$ photons in a $1~\mathrm{cm}$ thick tungsten crystal oriented along its $\langle 111 \rangle$ lattice axes. At $100~\mathrm{GeV}$, this enhancement, with respect to the value observed without axial alignment, is more than twofold. This effect, together with the measured huge increase in secondary particle generation is ascribed to the acceleration of the electromagnetic shower development by the strong axial electric field. The experimental results have been critically compared with a newly developed Monte Carlo adapted for use with crystals of multi-$X_0$ thickness. The results presented in this paper may prove to be of significant interest for the development of high-performance photon absorbers and highly compact electromagnetic calorimeters and beam dumps for use at the energy and intensity frontiers.

Coherent radiation produced by a relativistic bunch of charged particles passing through a photonic crystal

The equations, which describe generation of coherent radiation by a relativistic electron bunch moving in a photonic crystal, are obtained. Spectral-angular distribution of radiation and intensity of radiation in time-domain are derived. The interaction of the bunch electrons with the electromagnetic field induced by bunch itself at the initial stage of producing coherent radiation is shown contributing to the expression for the bunch current with the terms proportional to particle acceleration (proportional to interaction time and strength of electric field induced by bunch itself) along with the terms proportional to velocity. Induced radiation produced by the relativistic bunch is considered using the quantum physics approach.

Predicting outcomes of electric dipole and magnetic moment experiments

The anomalous magnetic and electric dipole moments in spin motion equation acquire pseudoscalar corrections if the $T(CP)$-noninvariance is admitted. It allows to explain the discrepancy between experimental and theoretical values of muon $(g-2)$ factor under assumption that the pseudoscalar correction is the dominant source of this discrepancy.

Pseudoscalar corrections to spin motion equation, search for electric dipole moment and muon magnetic (g-2) factor

The spin dynamics in constant electromagnetic fields is described by the Bargmann-Michel-Telegdi equation which can be upgraded with anomalous magnetic and electric dipole moments. The upgraded equation remains self-consistent, Lorentz-covariant and gauge-invariant. It and its different forms have been confirmed in numerous experiments to high degree of accuracy. We have recently derived the spin motion equation within the Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin weak-field approximation which adds a pseudoscalar correction to the BMT equation. The upgraded equation is again self-consistent, Lorentz-covariant, gauge-invariant, and free of unwanted artifacts. The pseudoscalar correction is expected to be small, and might become important in hypersensitive experiments, like the measurements of electric dipole moments which are themselves related to pseudoscalar quantities. It also becomes possible to explain why EDMs are so difficult to measure, since this correction term might lead to the effective screening of electric dipole moments. Within the same model, it is possible to explain the discrepancy between experimental and theoretical values of muon magnetic anomaly under assumption that the pseudoscalar correction is the dominant source of this discrepancy.

Search for electric dipole moment

The outstanding progress has been made in reducing the upper bounds on EDM of several particles. Even if significant challenges must be overcome to further improve these limits, it is still one of the best chances to detect new type of interactions beyond the standard model. Analyzing several examples, we highlight a common thread that is visible in different set-ups used for the EDM detection. The electric dipole moment is one of the clear consequences of CP- or T-violating interactions, however it is not the only one. These symmetry-violating interactions enable extra phenomena that unavoidably accompany the EDM-induced spin precession, and they must be taken into account in planning and executing sensitive experiments. After reviewing three typical cases, we suggest conditions for improving the sensitivity of detecting the intrinsic EDM.

Electromagnetic dipole, quadrupole moments and parity and time reversal invariance interactions of $Ω^{\pm}$ baryons in bent and straight crystals

Experiments with $Ω^{\pm}$ baryons moving in a crystal at LHC in addition to EDM measurement open possibility to study electric quadrupole moment, to observe birefringence effect (spin oscillations and spin dichroism) for $Ω^{\pm}$ baryons and to get information about constants describing P-odd, T-odd effects at $Ω^{\pm}$ baryon interactions with electrons and nuclei

Study of electromagnetic dipole moment, electric quadrupole moment and weak T-odd (CP-odd) interactions of high energy short-lived particles in straight crystals

A particle, which moves in a crystal, experiences weak interactions with electrons and nuclei alongside with electromagnetic interaction. Measuring the polarization vector and the angular distribution of charged and neutral particles scattered by axes (planes) of an unbent (straight) crystal enables to obtain restrictions for the EDM value and for {magnitudes} of constants describing T-odd (CP-odd) interactions Beyond the Standard Model. Spin rotation and polarization conversion from vector to tensor one and vice versa for a channelled in a crystal $Ω^{\pm}$ hyperon enable measuring hyperon's quadrupole moment that is not possible to measure by use of laboratory available noncrystalline electric fields.

Photonic Crystal-Based Compact High-Power Vacuum Electronic Devices

This paper considers how the finite dimensions of a photonic crystal placed inside a resonator or waveguide affect the law of electron beam instability. The dispersion equations describing e-beam instability in the finite photonic crystal placed inside the resonator or waveguide (a bounded photonic crystal) are obtained. Two cases are considered: the conventionally considered case, when diffraction is suppressed, and the case of direct and diffracted waves having almost equal amplitudes. The instability law is shown to be responsible for increase of increment of instability and decrease of length, at which instability develops, for the case when amplitude of diffracted wave is comparable with that of direct one, that happens in the vicinity of $π$-point of dispersion curve. Application of photonic crystals for development of THz sources at electron beam current densities available at modern accelerators is discussed.

Electromagnetic dipole moment and time reversal invariance violating interactions for high energy short-lived particles in bent and straight crystals at Large Hadron Collider

A channelled particle, which moves in a crystal, alongside with electromagnetic interaction also experiences weak interaction with electrons and nuclei, as well as strong interaction with nuclei. Measurements of polarization vector and angular distribution of particles scattered by axes (planes) of unbent crystal enable to obtain limits for the EDM value and for values of constants describing P- and T-odd interactions. The same measurements also allow studying magnetic dipole moment of charged and neutral particles. Investigation of left-right asymmetry by the use of two unbent crystals makes it possible to measure EDM, MDM and other constants without studying the angular distribution of decay products of scattered particles: it is sufficient to measure the intensity of flow of particles experienced double scattering. Spin precession of channelled particles in bent crystals at the LHC gives unique possibility for measurement of constants determining T-odd, P-odd (CP) violating interactions and P-odd, T-even interactions of baryons with electrons and nucleus (nucleons), similarly to the possibility of measuring electric and magnetic moments of charm, beauty and strange charged baryons. Methods to separate P-noninvariant rotation from the MDM- and EDM-induced (T-odd) spin rotations are discussed.

Electrostatic cumulation of high-current electron beams for terahertz sources

The electrostatic cumulation of current density in relativistic vacuum diodes with ring-type cathodes is described theoretically and confirmed experimentally. The distinctive feature of the suggested cumulation mechanism is a very low energy spread of electrons. As a result of electrostatic cumulation, a thin relativistic electron beam with a current density of 1 kA/mm$^2$ can be formed. This quantity exceeds typical current density values in high-current Cherenkov sources by an order of magnitude. Such a beam can be used as an active medium in high-power terahertz sources.

Time reversal invariance violation for high energy charged baryons in bent crystals

Spin precession of channelled particles in bent crystals at the LHC gives unique possibility for measurements as electric and magnetic moments of charm, beauty and strange charged baryons so and constants determining CP ($T_{odd}, P_{odd}$) violation interactions and $P_{odd}, T_{even}$ interactions of baryons with electrons and nucleus (nucleons). For a particle moving in a bent crystal a new effect caused by nonelastic processes arises: in addition to the spin precession around the direction of the effective magnetic field (bend axis), the direction of electric field and the direction of the particle momentum, the spin rotation to the mentioned directions also appears.

On the search for the electric dipole moment of strange and charm baryons at LHC and parity violating (P) and time reversal (T) invariance violating spin rotation and dichroism in crystal

In a bent crystal the $P$-odd effect of short-lived baryon spin rotation could imitate spin rotation caused by assumed EDM. Use of different behavior of $P$-odd and $T$-odd spin rotations at crystal turning around the direction of particle momentum makes it possible to exclude $P$-odd rotation contribution, when measuring short-lived baryons EDM. Subtraction of the measurement results for angle ranges $φ$ and $φ+ π$ from each other enables measuring $T$-odd rotation at scattering of negatively charged beauty and neutral baryons by axes of unbent crystal.

Radical increase of the parametric X-ray intensity under condition of extremely asymmetric diffraction

Parametric X-ray radiation (PXR) from relativistic electrons moving in a crystal along the crystal-vacuum interface is considered. In this geometry the emission of photons is happening in the regime of extremely asymmetric diffraction (EAD). In the EAD case the whole crystal length contributes to the formation of X-ray radiation opposed to Laue and Bragg geometries, where the emission intensity is defined by the X-ray absorption length. We demonstrate that this phenomenon should be described within the dynamical theory of diffraction and predict a radical increase of the PXR intensity. In particular, under realistic electron-beam parameters, an increase of two orders of magnitude in PXR-EAD intensity can be obtained in comparison with conventional experimental geometries of PXR. In addition we discuss in details the experimental feasibility of the detection of PXR-EAD.
