Gauge invariance and classical dynamics of noncommutative particle theory

We consider a model of classical noncommutative particle in an external electromagnetic field. For this model, we prove the existence of generalized gauge transformations. Classical dynamics in Hamiltonian and Lagrangian form is discussed, in particular, the motion in the constant magnetic field is studied in detail.

Position-dependent noncommutativity in quantum mechanics

The model of the position-dependent noncommutativety in quantum mechanics is proposed. We start with a given commutation relations between the operators of coordinates [x^{i},x^{j}]=ω^{ij}(x), and construct the complete algebra of commutation relations, including the operators of momenta. The constructed algebra is a deformation of a standard Heisenberg algebra and obey the Jacobi identity. The key point of our construction is a proposed first-order Lagrangian, which after quantization reproduces the desired commutation relations. Also we study the possibility to localize the noncommutativety.

Star products made (somewhat) easier

We develop an approach to the deformation quantization on the real plane with an arbitrary Poisson structure which based on Weyl symmetrically ordered operator products. By using a polydifferential representation for deformed coordinates $\hat x^j$ we are able to formulate a simple and effective iterative procedure which allowed us to calculate the fourth order star product (and may be extended to the fifth order at the expense of tedious but otherwise straightforward calculations). Modulo some cohomology issues which we do not consider here, the method gives an explicit and physics-friendly description of the star products.

On the action principle for a system of differential equations

We consider the problem of constructing an action functional for physical systems whose classical equations of motion cannot be directly identified with Euler-Lagrange equations for an action principle. Two ways of action principle construction are presented. From simple consideration, we derive necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a multiplier matrix which can endow a prescribed set of second-order differential equations with the structure of Euler-Lagrange equations. An explicit form of the action is constructed in case if such a multiplier exists. If a given set of differential equations cannot be derived from an action principle, one can reformulate such a set in an equivalent first-order form which can always be treated as the Euler-Lagrange equations of a certain action. We construct such an action explicitly. There exists an ambiguity (not reduced to a total time derivative) in associating a Lagrange function with a given set of equations. We present a complete description of this ambiguity. The general procedure is illustrated by several examples.

Path integral representations in noncommutative quantum mechanics and noncommutative version of Berezin-Marinov action

It is known that actions of field theories on a noncommutative space-time can be written as some modified (we call them $θ$-modified) classical actions already on the commutative space-time (introducing a star product). Then the quantization of such modified actions reproduces both space-time noncommutativity and usual quantum mechanical features of the corresponding field theory. The $θ$-modification for arbitrary finite-dimensional nonrelativistic system was proposed by Deriglazov (2003). In the present article, we discuss the problem of constructing $θ$-modified actions for relativistic QM. We construct such actions for relativistic spinless and spinning particles. The key idea is to extract $θ$-modified actions of the relativistic particles from path integral representations of the corresponding noncommtative field theory propagators. We consider Klein-Gordon and Dirac equations for the causal propagators in such theories. Then we construct for the propagators path-integral representations. Effective actions in such representations we treat as $θ$-modified actions of the relativistic particles. To confirm the interpretation, we quantize canonically these actions. Thus, we obtain the Klein-Gordon and Dirac equations in the noncommutative field theories. The $θ$-modified action of the relativistic spinning particle is just a generalization of the Berezin-Marinov pseudoclassical action for the noncommutative case.

Canonical quantization of so-called non-Lagrangian systems

We present an approach to the canonical quantization of systems with equations of motion that are historically called non-Lagrangian equations. Our viewpoint of this problem is the following: despite the fact that a set of differential equations cannot be directly identified with a set of Euler-Lagrange equations, one can reformulate such a set in an equivalent first-order form which can always be treated as the Euler-Lagrange equations of a certain action. We construct such an action explicitly. It turns out that in the general case the hamiltonization and canonical quantization of such an action are non-trivial problems, since the theory involves time-dependent constraints. We adopt the general approach of hamiltonization and canonical quantization for such theories (Gitman, Tyutin, 1990) to the case under consideration. There exists an ambiguity (not reduced to a total time derivative) in associating a Lagrange function with a given set of equations. We present a complete description of this ambiguity. The proposed scheme is applied to the quantization of a general quadratic theory. In addition, we consider the quantization of a damped oscillator and of a radiating point-like charge.

Deformation quantization of linear dissipative systems

A simple pseudo-Hamiltonian formulation is proposed for the linear inhomogeneous systems of ODEs. In contrast to the usual Hamiltonian mechanics, our approach is based on the use of non-stationary Poisson brackets, i.e. corresponding Poisson tensor is allowed to explicitly depend on time. Starting from this pseudo-Hamiltonian formulation we develop a consistent deformation quantization procedure involving a non-stationary star-product $*_t$ and an ``extended'' operator of time derivative $D_t=\partial_t+...$, differentiating the $\ast_t$-product. As in the usual case, the $\ast_t$-algebra of physical observables is shown to admit an essentially unique (time dependent) trace functional $\mathrm{Tr}_t$. Using these ingredients we construct a complete and fully consistent quantum-mechanical description for any linear dynamical system with or without dissipation. The general quantization method is exemplified by the models of damped oscillator and radiating point charge.
