The observation of the local - mode vibration, the two - mode behavior of the LO phonons at large isotope concentration, as well as large line broadening in LIH - D mixed crystals directly evidence strong additional phonon scattering due to the isotope - induced disorder.
This article reviews from one point of view the current status of the manifestations of isotope effect in a nuclear, atomic and molecular as well as solid state physics. Although these manifestations vary, they have one common feature - they all depend on mass. At present time the Standard Model can't explain the origin of the mass of elementary particles and their hierarchy. The last one don't permit to find the origin of the isotope effect.
Charge symmetry breaking in the strong interaction occurs because of the difference between the masses of the up and down quarks. At present the Standard Model can't explain the observed mass pattern (M(n), M(p), m(u), m(d) etc.) and their hierarchy. The last one doesn't permit us to find the origin of the isotope effect. The origin of the mass of matter will be clarified when the mechanism of chiral symmetry breaking in QCD is established.
In this short review I discuss the effect of isotopic mass and isotopic disorder on the properties (vibrational, elastic, thermal and optical) of different crystals.
The results of the quantitative investigations of the renormalization of the absorption edge of different compounds by the isotope effect are described.
The results of a quantitative study of the renormalization of the binding energy of the Wannier-Mott exciton by the isotope effect are presented.
