Strong enhancement of superconductivity at high pressures within the charge-density-wave states of 2H-TaS 2 and 2H-TaSe 2

We present measurements of the superconducting and charge density wave critical temperatures (Tc and TCDW) as a function of pressure in the transition metal dichalchogenides 2H-TaSe2 and 2H-TaS2. Resistance and susceptibility measurements show that Tc increases from temperatures below 1 K up to 8.5 K at 9.5 GPa in 2H-TaS2 and 8.2 K at 23 GPa in 2H-TaSe2. We observe a kink in the pressure dependence of TCDW at about 4 GPa that we attribute to the lock-in transition from incommensurate CDW to commensurate CDW. Above this pressure, the commensurate TCDW slowly decreases coexisting with superconductivity within our full pressure range.

Pressure dependence of superconducting critical temperature and upper critical field of 2H-NbS2

We present measurements of the superconducting critical temperature Tc and upper critical field Hc2 as a function of pressure in the transition metal dichalcogenide 2H-NbS2 up to 20 GPa. We observe that Tc increases smoothly from 6K at ambient pressure to about 8.9K at 20GPa. This range of increase is comparable to the one found previously in 2H-NbSe2. The temperature dependence of the upper critical field Hc2(T) of 2H-NbS2 varies considerably when increasing the pressure. At low pressures, Hc2(0) decreases, and at higher pressures both Tc and Hc2(0) increase simultaneously. This points out that there are pressure induced changes of the Fermi surface, which we analyze in terms of a simplified two band approach.

Effects of pressure-induced phase transitions on superconductivity in the single crystal Fe1.02Se

The temperature dependence of the ac susceptibility for single-crystalline Fe1.02Se has been measured at high pressures to 6.7 GPa. The superconducting transition temperature Tc displays a large increase from 7 K to 30 K in the two-phase region at 0.5 - 1 GPa. Further increase in pressure results in the decrease of Tc. The destruction of superconductivity near 7 GPa is presumably related to a structural transition from orthorhombic to hexagonal. .

Superconductivity at 17 K in Yttrium Metal under Nearly Hydrostatic Pressures to 89 GPa

In an experiment in a diamond anvil cell utilizing helium pressure medium, yttrium metal displays a superconducting transition temperature which increases monotonically from Tc ? 3.5 K at 30 GPa to 17 K at 89.3 GPa, one of the highest transition temperatures for any elemental superconductor. The pressure dependence of Tc differs substantially from that observed in previous studies under quasihydrostatic pressure to 30 GPa. Remarkably, the dependence of Tc on relative volume V/Vo is linear over the entire pressure range above 33 GPa, implying that higher values of Tc are likely at higher pressures. For the trivalent metals Sc, Y, La, Lu there appears to be some correlation between Tc and the ratio of the Wigner-Seitz radius to the ion core radius.

Pressure induced effects on the Fermi surface of superconducting 2H-NbSe$_2$

The pressure dependence of the critical temperature $T_c$ and upper critical field $H_{c2}(T)$ has been measured up to 19 GPa in the layered superconducting material 2H-NbSe$_2$. Relating the behavior of $H_{c2}(T)$ to Fermi surface parameters, we find that the electron phonon coupling of the 2D Nb 4d derived bands shows a peak at 5 GPa when the charge density wave (CDW) order is suppressed. On the other hand, $T_c(P)$ shows a bell shaped curve with a maximum at 10.5 GPa, well above the pressure for the suppression of the CDW order. Changes in the band structure produce this shift in the maximum of $T_c(P)$, demonstrating that 2H-NbSe$_2$ shows important differences with respect to other compounds where $T_c$ has a maximum in the temperature-density phase diagram shaped by the suppression of another, non-superconducting, ground state.

Pressure dependence of the upper critical field of MgB2 and of YNi2B2C

We present measurements of H$_{c2}(T)$ under pressure in MgB$_2$ and in YNi$_2$B$_2$C. The changes in the shape of H$_{c2}(T)$ are interpreted within current models and show the evolution of the main Fermi surface velocities $v_F$ and electron-phonon coupling parameters $λ$ with pressure. In MgB$_2$ the electron-phonon coupling strength of the nearly two dimensional $σ$ band, responsible for the high critical temperature, is more affected by pressure than the $π$ band coupling, and the hole doping of the $σ$ band decreases. In YNi$_2$B$_2$C, the peculiar positive curvature of H$_{c2}(T)$ is weakened by pressure.

Enhancement of Critical Current across Single Grain Boundaries in YBa2Cu3Ox and Search for Superconductivity in Alkali Metals

The ability of single grain boundaries in YBa2Cu3Ox bicrystalline rings to carry electrical current is found to be significantly enhanced under hydrostatic pressure. Nearly hydrostatic pressures are applied to the alkali metals Li, Na, and K. in a search for superconductivity. Whereas Li becomes superconducting above 20 GPa at temperatures as high as 15 K, no superconductivity was observed above 4 K in Na to 65 GPa nor in K above 4 K to 43.5 GPa or above 1.5 K to 35 GPa.

Effect of pressure on the superconducting Tc of MgB2

Measurements of the superconducting transition temperature Tc have been performed by the inductive method on MgB2 at pressures up to 28 GPa. Tc decreases with applied pressure, exhibiting a cusp at about 9 GPa. We interpret the appearance of this anomaly in the Tc(P) dependence as a result of the pressure-induced electronic transition. Recent band-structure calculations for MgB2 give some support for such an explanation.
