Unveiling the superconducting scenario in multiphase superconductor CeRh$_2$As$_2$ from space-group symmetry analysis and DFT calculations

Despite of the low transition temperature, the recently identified superconductor CeRh$_2$As$_2$ has garnered significant interest due to its unique symmetry and magnetic characteristics, particularly the existence of two superconducting (SC) phases under a magnetic field, one of which exceeds the Pauli-Clogston limit. The field-induced transition from a low-field even-parity state to a high-field odd-parity state is usually described as a singlet-triplet transition. However, it is uncommon for a single compound to exhibit both triplet and singlet SC scenarios. The aim of this paper is to investigate the possibilities of symmetry changes in the SC state without a change of spin multiplicity. To this end, we construct the SC order parameter based on Anderson pair functions, considering the phase winding within the symmetry of the point group $D_{4h}$ and the magnetic group $4/mm^{\prime }m^{\prime}$. It was found that two triplets with opposite-spin and equal-spin pairing states of symmetry $E_{1u}^{\prime +}$, are nodeless but exhibit distinct internal structures and may be associated with low-and high-field phases. Additionally, nontrivial Cooper pairing resulting from the non-symmorphic structure of the space group was examined, particularly in the case where the Fermi surface intersects with the boundaries of a Brillouin zone (BZ). It was determined that at the X point, triplet pairs are even, while singlet pairs can be either even or odd. Furthermore, at the X point, pair density waves that alter phase by $π$ at the atomic centers linked by lattice translations are also feasible. To explore the possibility of such scenarios, precise DFT calculations of the band structure were performed, revealing the contribution of Ce $4f$ electrons to the states at the Fermi level. Thus, the even-odd transition can take place in a triplet scenario at symmetry points of a BZ.

Photoionization of atoms and ions from endohedral anions

We study the interconnection between the results of two qualitatively different approximate calculations of photoionization cross sections, $σ_{n\ell}$, for neutral atoms ($A$) or their cations ($A^+$), centrally confined inside a fullerene-anion shell, $C_{N}^{q}$ , where $q$ represents the negative excess charge on the shell. One of the approximations, frequently employed in previous studies, assumes a uniform excess negative charge distribution over the entire fullerene shell, by analogy with a charged metallic sphere. The other approximation, not previously discussed in the literature, considers the quantum states of the excess electrons on the shell, determined by specific $n$ and $\ell$ values of their quantum numbers. Remarkably, both methods yield photoionization cross sections for the encapsulated species that are close to each other. Consequently, we find that the photoionization of the encapsulated atoms or cations inside a $C_{N}^{q}$ anion is minimally influenced by the quantum states of the excess electrons on the fullerene shell. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the aforementioned influence decreases even further with an increasing size of the confining fullerene shell. All this holds true at least under the assumption that the confined atom or cation is compact, i.e., its electron density remains primarily within itself rather than being drawn into the fullerene shell. This remarkable finding results from Hartree-Fock calculations combined with a popular modeling of the fullerene shell, where it is modeled by an attractive spherical annular potential.

Time-Reversal Symmetry and the Structure of Superconducting Order Parameter of Nearly Ferromagnetic Spin-Triplet Superconductor UTe2

The space-group approach to the wavefunction of a Cooper pair is extended to Shubnikov groups of type III and applied to newly discovered nearly ferromagnetic superconductor UTe2. A nonunitary triplet SOP (superconducting order parameter), manifested experimentally, was obtained for Shubnikov group m'm'm . The nodal structure of triplet nonunitary SOP is investigated and it was shown that in the case of Shubnikov III symmetry nodal structure of ESP (equal spin pairing) state is in some cases unstable, i.e. changes when a complex phase winding is added. The irreducible corepresentations of a Cooper pair wave function corresponding to m'm'm symmetry and to all experimental data for UTe2 are identified.

MALDI-TOF and Quantum Chemical Study of Non-stoichiometric Tantalum Oxychloride Clusters

Using the MALDI-TOF spectroscopy method, clusters of non-stoichiometric tantalum oxychlorides formed as a result of hydrolysis of nanoscale reaction products of tantalum pentachloride with acetylene and of interaction with oxygen and air moisture in the process of sample preparation were studied. The formation of oxychloride clusters containing from 2 to 15 tantalum atoms is shown. Quantum chemical calculations of the structure and relative thermodynamic stability of the possible isomers are carried out. The stability of cage Ta structures connected by oxygen bridges with significant contribution of metal-metal bond is established

An ab initio Local Exchange Approach to the Calculations of Tc of Dilute Magnetic Semiconductors

The DFT calculations were performed of densities of states of semiconductor GaAs and magnetic semiconductor Ga0.9375Mn0.0625As. It is obtained that a part of Mn3d- states is hybridized with valence band at Fermi level. The exchange integrals of Anderson impurity model were calculated making use of atomic Hartree-Fock package and angular momentum coupling technique. Theoretical Tc of Ga0.9375Mn0.0625As obtained in the multiscale ab initio method is in reasonable agreement with experiment. The application of Hubbard parameters in DFT calculations using ultrasoft pseudopotentials is discussed.

Calculation of Ar photoelectron satellites in hard X-ray region

The intensities of photoelectron satellite lines, corresponding to double core hole (DCH) states of Ar 1s ionization by hard X-rays are calculated using the many-body-perturbation theory. Calculations support the interpretation of the most intense lines as the shake-up excitations 2p 4p. It is demonstrated that the intensities of the spectrum lines corresponding to 4s (and 3d) excited states in DCH field can be explained only taking into account the direct knock-up process 2p 3d along with shake-up process 1s 4s that accompanies 2p photoionization.

Additional Quantum Numbers for Electron Orbitals of Nanoparticles

It is shown that in large symmetrical nanoparticles additional quantum numbers are required to label unambiguously symmetry adapted linear combinations of the wave functions. It is obtained that the labels of irreducible representations (IRs) of intermediate subgroups (between the whole symmetry group and local subgroup) can be used for complete classification of states in the case of repeating IRs. The examples of Oh and Ih groups are considered and the connection of additional quantum numbers with local interactions is discussed

Time-reversal symmetry violation and the structure of Superconducting Order Parameter of PrOs$_{4}$Sb$_{12}$

The antisymmetrised two-electron functions are constructed for the point group T$_{h}$, i.e. the symmetry group of unconventional superconductor PrOs$% _{4}$Sb$_{14}$., and its subgroup D$_{2h}$.The nodal structure of these function depending on the wavevector group is investigated. Theoretical nodal structure of these functions made possible to explain the experimental nodal structure PrOs$_{4}$Sb$_{14}$. as a result of time-reversal symmetry violation.

Symmetry of Two- and Four- Electron States in Solids. Application to Unconventional Superconductors

Group theoretical technique for construction of two-electron wavefunctions with zero total momentum in solids based on the Mackey theorem on symmetrized squares is developed. These states correspond to singlet and triplet Cooper pairs. The nodal structure of these states is investigated group theoretically and compared with experimental data for unconventional superconductors. It is shown that when the Mackey theorem is applied twice, the main four-electron states in solids can be constructed. Possible connection of these states with experimental data is discussed.
