Master equation for cascade quantum channels: a collisional approach

It has been recently shown that collisional models can be used to derive a general form for the master equations which describe the reduced time evolution of a composite multipartite quantum system, whose components "propagate" in an environmental medium which induces correlations among them via a cascade mechanism. Here we analyze the fundamental assumptions of this approach showing how some of them can be lifted when passing into a proper interaction picture representation.

Teleportation transfers only speakable quantum information

We show that a quantum clock cannot be teleported without prior synchronization between sender and receiver: every protocol using a finite amount of entanglement and an arbitrary number of rounds of classical communication will necessarily introduce an error in the teleported state of the clock. Nevertheless, we show that entanglement can be used to achieve synchronization with precision higher than any classical correlation allows, and we give the optimized strategy for this task. The same results hold also for arbitrary continuous quantum reference frames, which encode general unspeakable information,-information that cannot be encoded into a number, but instead requires a specific physical support, like a clock or a gyroscope, to be conveyed.

Proposal for a Datta-Das transistor in the quantum Hall regime

We propose a resonant spin-field-effect transistor for chiral spin-resolved edge states in the integer quantum Hall effect with Rashba spin-orbit interaction. It employs a periodic array of voltage-controlled top gates that locally modulate the Rashba spin-orbit interaction. Strong resonant spin-field effect is achieved when the array periodicity matches the inverse of the wave-vector difference of the two chiral states involved. Well-known techniques of separately contacting the edge states make it possible to selectively populate and read out the edge states, allowing full spin readout. The resonant nature of the spin-field effect and the adiabatic character of the edge states guarantee a high degree of robustness with respect to disorder. Our device represents the quantum Hall version of the all-electrical Datta-Das spin-field effect transistor.

Entanglement-assisted tomography of a quantum target

We study the efficiency of quantum tomographic reconstruction where the system under investigation (quantum target) is indirectly monitored by looking at the state of a quantum probe that has been scattered off the target. In particular we focus on the state tomography of a qubit through a one-dimensional scattering of a probe qubit, with a Heisenberg-type interaction. Via direct evaluation of the associated quantum Cramér-Rao bounds, we compare the accuracy efficiency that one can get by adopting entanglement-assisted strategies with that achievable when entanglement resources are not available. Even though sub-shot noise accuracy levels are not attainable, we show that quantum correlations play a significant role in the estimation. A comparison with the accuracy levels obtainable by direct estimation (not through a probe) of the quantum target is also performed.

Quantum channels and their entropic characteristics

One of the major achievements of the recently emerged quantum information theory is the introduction and thorough investigation of the notion of quantum channel which is a basic building block of any data-transmitting or data-processing system. This development resulted in an elaborated structural theory and was accompanied by the discovery of a whole spectrum of entropic quantities, notably the channel capacities, characterizing information-processing performance of the channels. This paper gives a survey of the main properties of quantum channels and of their entropic characterization, with a variety of examples for finite dimensional quantum systems. We also touch upon the "continuous-variables" case, which provides an arena for quantum Gaussian systems. Most of the practical realizations of quantum information processing were implemented in such systems, in particular based on principles of quantum optics. Several important entropic quantities are introduced and used to describe the basic channel capacity formulas. The remarkable role of the specific quantum correlations - entanglement - as a novel communication resource, is stressed.

Statistical distribution of the local purity in a large quantum system

The local purity of large many-body quantum systems can be studied by following a statistical mechanical approach based on a random matrix model. Restricting the analysis to the case of global pure states, this method proved to be successful and a full characterization of the statistical properties of the local purity was obtained by computing the partition function of the problem. Here we generalize these techniques to the case of global mixed states. Since the computation of the partition function is far more challenging than in the pure case, we focus on the computation of the first moments of the local purity. Finally, we establish a connection with the theory of twirling maps in quantum channels.

Edge channel mixing induced by potential steps in an integer quantum Hall system

We investigate the coherent mixing of co-propagating edge channels in a quantum Hall bar produced by step potentials. In the case of two edge channels it is found that, although a single step induces only a few percent mixing, a series of steps could yield 50% mixing. In addition, a strong mixing is found when the potential height of a single step allows a different number of edge channels on the two sides of the step. Charge density probability has been also calculated even for the case where the step is smoothened.

Generalized minimal output entropy conjecture for one-mode Gaussian channels: definitions and some exact results

A formulation of the generalized minimal output entropy conjecture for Gaussian channels is presented. It asserts that, for states with fixed input entropy, the minimal value of the output entropy of the channel (i.e. the minimal output entropy increment for fixed input entropy) is achieved by Gaussian states. In the case of centered channels (i.e. channels which do not add squeezing to the input state) this implies that the minimum is obtained by thermal (Gibbs) inputs. The conjecture is proved to be valid in some special cases.

Critical properties of homogeneous binary trees

Many-body states whose wave-function admits a representation in terms of a uniform binary-tree tensor decomposition are shown to obey to power-law two-body correlations functions. Any such state can be associated with the ground state of a translational invariant Hamiltonian which, depending on the dimension of the systems sites, involve at most couplings between third-neighboring sites. A detailed analysis of their spectra shows that they admit an exponentially large ground space.

The bosonic minimum output entropy conjecture and Lagrangian minimization

We introduce a new form for the bosonic channel minimal output entropy conjecture, namely that among states with equal input entropy, the thermal states are the ones that have slightest increase in entropy when sent through a infinitesimal thermalizing channel. We then detail a strategy to prove the conjecture through variational techniques. This would lead to the calculation of the classical capacity of a communication channel subject to thermal noise. Our strategy detects input thermal ensembles as possible solutions for the optimal encoding of the channel, lending support to the conjecture. However, it does not seem to be able to exclude the possibility that other input ensembles can attain the channel capacity.

Signatures of the super fluid-insulator phase transition in laser driven dissipative nonlinear cavity arrays

We analyze the non-equilibrium dynamics of a gas of interacting photons in an array of coupled dissipative nonlinear cavities driven by a pulsed external coherent field. Using a mean-field approach, we show that the system exhibits a phase transition from a Mott-insulator-like to a superfluid regime. For a given single-photon nonlinearity, the critical value of the photon tunneling rate at which the phase transition occurs increases with the increasing photon loss rate. We checked the robustness of the transition by showing its insensitivity to the initial state prepared by the the pulsed excitation. We find that the second-order coherence of cavity emission can be used to determine the phase diagram of an optical many-body system without the need for thermalization.

Electronic implementations of Interaction-Free Measurements

Three different implementations of interaction-free measurements (IFMs) in solid-state nanodevices are discussed. The first one is based on a series of concatenated Mach-Zehnder interferometers, in analogy to optical-IFM setups. The second one consists of a single interferometer and concatenation is achieved in the time domain making use of a quantized electron emitter. The third implementation consists of an asymmetric Aharonov-Bohm ring. For all three cases we show that the presence of a dephasing source acting on one arm of the interferometer can be detected without degrading the coherence of the measured current. Electronic implementations of IFMs in nanoelectronics may play a fundamental role as very accurate and noninvasive measuring schemes for quantum devices.

Minimum output entropy of Gaussian channels

We show that the minimum output entropy for all single-mode Gaussian channels is additive and is attained for Gaussian inputs. This allows the derivation of the channel capacity for a number of Gaussian channels, including that of the channel with linear loss, thermal noise, and linear amplification.

Entanglement renormalization and boundary critical phenomena

The multiscale entanglement renormalization ansatz is applied to the study of boundary critical phenomena. We compute averages of local operators as a function of the distance from the boundary and the surface contribution to the ground state energy. Furthermore, assuming a uniform tensor structure, we show that the multiscale entanglement renormalization ansatz implies an exact relation between bulk and boundary critical exponents known to exist for boundary critical systems.

Coherent detection of electron dephasing

We show that an Aharonov-Bohm (AB) ring with asymmetric electron injection can act as a coherent detector of electron dephasing. The presence of a dephasing source in one of the two arms of a moderately-to-highly asymmetric ring changes the response of the system from total reflection to complete transmission while preserving the coherence of the electrons propagating from the ring, even for strong dephasing. We interpret this phenomenon as an implementation of an interaction-free measurement.

Experimental Quantum Private Queries with linear optics

The Quantum Private Query is a quantum cryptographic protocol to recover information from a database, preserving both user and data privacy: the user can test whether someone has retained information on which query was asked, and the database provider can test the quantity of information released. Here we introduce a new variant Quantum Private Query algorithm which admits a simple linear optical implementation: it employs the photon's momentum (or time slot) as address qubits and its polarization as bus qubit. A proof-of-principle experimental realization is implemented.

Homogeneous MERA states: an information theoretical analysis

Homogeneous Multi-scale Entanglement Renormalization Ansazt (MERA) state have been recently introduced to describe quantum critical systems. Here we present an extensive analysis of the properties of such states by clarifying the definition of their transfer super-operator whose structure is studied within a informational theoretical approach. Explicit expressions for computing the expectation values of symmetric observables are given both in the case of finite size systems and in the thermodynamic limit of infinitely many particles.

High fidelity state transfer in binary tree spin networks

Quantum state propagation over binary tree configurations is studied in the context of quantum spin networks. For binary tree of order two a simple protocol is presented which allows to achieve arbitrary high transfer fidelity. It does not require fine tuning of local fields and two-nodes coupling of the intermediate spins. Instead it assumes simple local operations on the intended receiving node: their role is to brake the transverse symmetry of the network that induces an effective refocusing of the propagating signals. Some ideas on how to scale up these effect to binary tree of arbitrary order are discussed.
