Structural transitions of finite spherical Yukawa crystals

Small three-dimensional strongly coupled clusters of charged particles in a spherical confinement potential arrange themselves in nested concentric shells. If the particles are immersed into a background plasma the interaction is screened. The cluster shell configuration is known to be sensitive to the screening strength. With increased screening an increased population of the inner shell(s) is observed. Here, we present a detailed analysis of the ground state shell configurations and configuration changes in a wide range of screening parameters for clusters with particle numbers $N$ in the range of 11 to 60. We report three types of anomalous behaviors which are observed upon increase of screening, at fixed $N$ or for an increase of $N$ at fixed screening. The results are obtained by means of extensive first principle molecular dynamics simulations.

Structural properties of screened Coulomb balls

Small three-dimensional strongly coupled charged particles in a spherical confinement potential arrange themselves in a nested shell structure. By means of experiments, computer simulations and theoretical analysis, it is shown that their structural properties depend on the type of interparticle forces. Using an isotropic Yukawa interaction, quantitative agreement for shell radii and occupation is obtained.

Tables of mesoscopic 3D Coulomb balls

Detailed numerical results for the structural properties of three-dimensional classical Coulomb clusters confined in a spherical parabolic trap are presented. Based on extensive high accuracy computer simulations the shell configurations and energies for particle numbers in the range $2 \le N\le 160$ are reported. Further, the mean shell radii and shell widths are calculated.

Single-electron control of Wigner crystallization

Wigner crystallization in mesoscopic quantum dots containing only few ($N < 50$) electrons exhibits a number of interesting peculiarities: (i) there exist two distinct crystal phases, and (ii) the phase boundary sensitively depends on the precise particle number. In this paper we demonstrate that this behavior can be used to control the {\em collective} transport properties by adding or removing a {\em single electron}.

Plasmon dispersion of a weakly degenerate nonideal one-component plasma

Classical Molecular Dynamics simulations (MD) for a one-component weakly degenerate plasma are presented. Using an effective quantum pair potential (Kelbg potential), the dynamic structure factor and the dispersion of Langmuir waves are computed. The influence of the coupling strength $Γ$ and degree of degeneracy $ρΛ^3$ on these properties is discussed. The results are compared with predictions of mean-field theories.

Dynamical Properties and Plasmon Dispersion of a Weakly Degenerate Correlated One-Component Plasma

Classical Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations for a one-component plasma (OCP) are presented. Quantum effects are included in the form of the Kelbg potential. Results for the dynamical structure factor are compared with the Vlasov and RPA (random phase approximation) theories. The influence of the coupling parameter $Γ$, degeneracy parameter $ρΛ^3$ and the form of the pair interaction on the optical plasmon dispersion is investigated. An improved analytical approximation for the dispersion of Langmuir waves is presented.
