Influence of high pressure on Ce3+ luminescence in LuAlO3 and YAlO3 single crystals and single crystalline layers

Results of spectroscopic studies at ambient and high pressures of a LuAlO3:Ce3+ (LuAP:Ce) single crystalline film (SCF) as well as LuAP:Ce and YAlO3:Ce (YAP:Ce) single crystals are reported. Room temperature absorption measurements of the single crystals in the vacuum UV region allowed establishing the bandgap energies of 7.63 eV for YAP and 7.86 eV for LuAP, with an assumption of the direct band-gaps. Luminescence of Ce3+ in LuAP and YAP bulk crystals was measured as a function of temperature from 6 K up to 873 K. Temperature quenching of the Ce3+ luminescence in YAP:Ce was observed above 650 K, which is related to the location of the lowest Ce3+ 5d level at 1.27 eV below the conduction band minimum. No temperature quenching occurred in LuAP:Ce up to 873 K, mostly due to the lower energy of the 4f levels with respect to the valence band maximum. The barycenter energies and splittings of Ce3+ 5d states in YAP and LuAP at room temperature were precisely established. Theoretical calculations of the Ce3+ 5d states energy structure under pressure revealed a discrepancy between the obtained experimental results and the prediction of Dorenbos' theoretical model. The discrepancy can be removed if instead of the 5d state of the free Ce3+ ion the bandgap of the compound is taken as reference energy for the red shift of the 5d level. This hypothesis also allows us to take into account the pressure-induced increase of the bandgap energy, expected for the studied compounds. Pressure dependences of LuAP:Ce luminescence spectra suggest that a certain type of phase transition occurs above 15 GPa.

An Electromagnetic Calorimeter for the JLab Real Compton Scattering Experiment

A lead-glass hodoscope calorimeter that was constructed for use in the Jefferson Lab Real Compton Scattering experiment is described. The detector provides a measurement of the coordinates and the energy of scattered photons in the GeV energy range with resolutions of 5 mm and 6%/\sqrt(Eγ [GeV]). Features of both the detector design and its performance in the high luminosity environment during the experiment are presented.

Moments of the neutron $g_2$ structure function at intermediate $Q^2$

We present new experimental results of the $^3$He spin structure function $g_2$ in the resonance region at $Q^2$ values between 1.2 and 3.0 (GeV/c)$^2$. Spin dependent moments of the neutron were then extracted. Our main result, the resonance contribution to the neutron $d_2$ matrix element, was found to be small at $ $=2.4 (GeV/c)$^2$ and in agreement with the Lattice QCD calculation. The Burkhardt-Cottingham sum rule for $^3$He and the neutron was tested with the measured data and using the Wandzura-Wilczek relation for the low $x$ unmeasured region. A small deviation was observed at $Q^2$ values between 0.5 and 1.2 (GeV/c)$^2$ for the neutron.

OSL dosimetric properties of cerium doped lutetium orthosilicates

This paper presents selected optically stimulated luminescence properties of Lu2SiO5:Ce single crystalline films grown using Liquid Phase Epitaxy technique. Comparison of continuous wave optically stimulated luminescence decay curves under blue and green light stimulation is shown. The dose response characteristic is found to be linear in the studied range from 100 uGy to 1 Gy. Analyses of the linearly modulated optically stimulated luminescence signal enabled establishing of the photoionization cross sections for blue light (470 nm). Bleachability and thermal stability of CW-OSL signal are discussed, as well as preliminary results of the fading study.

Virtual Compton Scattering and the Generalized Polarizabilities of the Proton at Q^2=0.92 and 1.76 GeV^2

Virtual Compton Scattering (VCS) on the proton has been studied at Jefferson Lab using the exclusive photon electroproduction reaction (e p --> e p gamma). This paper gives a detailed account of the analysis which has led to the determination of the structure functions P_LL-P_TT/epsilon and P_LT, and the electric and magnetic generalized polarizabilities (GPs) alpha_E(Q^2) and beta_M(Q^2) at values of the four-momentum transfer squared Q^2= 0.92 and 1.76 GeV^2. These data, together with the results of VCS experiments at lower momenta, help building a coherent picture of the electric and magnetic GPs of the proton over the full measured Q^2-range, and point to their non-trivial behavior.

The Equivalence Theorem in Effective Theories

The famous equivalence theorem is reexamined in order to make it applicable to the case of intrinsically quantum infinite-component effective theories. We slightly modify the formulation of this theorem and prove it basing on the notion of generating functional for Green functions. This allows one to trace (directly in terms of graphs) the mutual cancelation of different groups of contributions.

Quark-Hadron Duality in Neutron (3He) Spin Structure

We present experimental results of the first high-precision test of quark-hadron duality in the spin-structure function g_1 of the neutron and $^3$He using a polarized 3He target in the four-momentum-transfer-squared range from 0.7 to 4.0 (GeV/c)^2. Global duality is observed for the spin-structure function g_1 down to at least Q^2 = 1.8 (GeV/c)^2 in both targets. We have also formed the photon-nucleon asymmetry A_1 in the resonance region for 3He and found no strong Q^2-dependence above 2.2 (GeV/c)^2.

3He Spin-Dependent Cross Sections and Sum Rules

We present a measurement of the spin-dependent cross sections for the \vec{^3He}(\vec{e},e')X} reaction in the quasielastic and resonance regions at four-momentum transfer 0.1 < Q^2< 0.9 GeV^2. The spin-structure functions have been extracted and used to evaluate the nuclear Burkhardt--Cottingham and extended GDH sum rules for the first time. Impulse approximation and exact three-body Faddeev calculations are also compared to the data in the quasielastic region.
