Bosonic Excitations in Random Media

We consider classical normal modes and non-interacting bosonic excitations in disordered systems. We emphasise generic aspects of such problems and parallels with disordered, non-interacting systems of fermions, and discuss in particular the relevance for bosonic excitations of symmetry classes known in the fermionic context. We also stress important differences between bosonic and fermionic problems. One of these follows from the fact that ground state stability of a system requires all bosonic excitation energy levels to be positive, while stability in systems of non-interacting fermions is ensured by the exclusion principle, whatever the single-particle energies. As a consequence, simple models of uncorrelated disorder are less useful for bosonic systems than for fermionic ones, and it is generally important to study the excitation spectrum in conjunction with the problem of constructing a disorder-dependent ground state: we show how a mapping to an operator with chiral symmetry provides a useful tool for doing this. A second difference involves the distinction for bosonic systems between excitations which are Goldstone modes and those which are not. In the case of Goldstone modes we review established results illustrating the fact that disorder decouples from excitations in the low frequency limit, above a critical dimension $d_c$, which in different circumstances takes the values $d_c=2$ and $d_c=0$. For bosonic excitations which are not Goldstone modes, we argue that an excitation density varying with frequency as $ρ(ω) \propto ω^4$ is a universal feature in systems with ground states that depend on the disorder realisation. We illustrate our conclusions with extensive analytical and some numerical calculations for a variety of models in one dimension.

A superconductor-insulator transition in a one-dimensional array of Josephson junctions

We consider a one-dimensional Josephson junction array, in the regime where the junction charging energy is much greater than the charging energy of the superconducting islands. In this regime we critically reexamine the continuum limit description and establish the relationship between parameters of the array and the ones of the resulting sine-Gordon model. The later model is formulated in terms of quasi-charge. We argue that despite arguments to the contrary in the literature, such quasi-charge sine-Gordon description remains valid in the vicinity of the phase transition between the insulating and the superconducting phases. We also discuss the effects of random background charges, which are always present in experimental realizations of such arrays.

Some generic aspects of bosonic excitations in disordered systems

We consider non-interacting bosonic excitations in disordered systems, emphasising generic features of quadratic Hamiltonians in the absence of Goldstone modes. We discuss relationships between such Hamiltonians and the symmetry classes established for fermionic systems. We examine the density ρ(ω) of excitation frequencies ω, showing how the universal behavior ρ(ω) ~ ω^4 for small ωcan be obtained both from general arguments and by detailed calculations for one-dimensional models.

Quantum Hall Transition in the Classical Limit

We study the quantum Hall transition using the density-density correlation function. We show that in the limit h->0 the electron density moves along the percolating trajectories, undergoing normal diffusion. The localization exponent coincides with its percolation value ν=4/3. The framework provides a natural way to study the renormalization group flow from percolation to quantum Hall transition. We also confirm numerically that the critical conductivity of a classical limit of quantum Hall transition is σ_{xx} = \sqrt{3}/4.

Integer Quantum Hall Transition and Random SU(N) Rotation

We reduce the problem of integer quantum Hall transition to a random rotation of an N-dimensional vector by an su(N) algebra, where only N specially selected generators of the algebra are nonzero. The group-theoretical structure revealed in this way allows us to obtain a new series of conservation laws for the equation describing the electron density evolution in the lowest Landau level. The resulting formalism is particularly well suited to numerical simulations, allowing us to obtain the critical exponent νnumerically in a very simple way. We also suggest that if the number of nonzero generators is much less than N, the same model, in a certain intermediate time interval, describes percolating properties of a random incompressible steady two-dimensional flow. In other words, quantum Hall transition in a very smooth random potential inherits certain properties of percolation.

Conformal Algebras of 2D Disordered Systems

We discuss the structure of 2D conformal field theories (CFT) at central charge c=0 describing critical disordered systems, polymers and percolation. We construct a novel extension of the c=0 Virasoro algebra, characterized by a number b measuring the effective number of massless degrees of freedom, and by a logarithmic partner of the stress tensor. It is argued to be present at a generic random critical point, lacking super Kac-Moody, or other higher symmetries, and is a tool to describe and classify such theories. Interestingly, this algebra is not only consistent with, but indeed naturally accommodates in general an underlying global supersymmetry. Polymers and percolation realize this algebra. Unexpectedly, we find that the c=0 Kac table of the degenerate fields contains two distinct theories with b=5/6 and b=-5/8 which we conjecture to correspond to percolation and polymers respectively. A given Kac-table field can be degenerate only in one of them. Remarkably, we also find this algebra, and thereby an ensuing hidden supersymmetry, realized at general replica-averaged critical points, for which we derive an explicit formula for b.

Disorder Induced Phase Transition for Random 2D Dirac Fermions

We present evidence that two dimensional Dirac fermions in the presence of random Abelian gauge potential exhibit a phase transition when the disorder strength exceeds a certain critical value. We argue that this phase transition has novel properties unique to disordered systems. It resembles in many ways the transition from dilute to dense polymers phase in two dimension. In particular, we argue that the central charge of the disordered Dirac fermions, being $c=0$ before the transition, changes to $c=-2$. We discuss possible implications to quantum Hall transitions, in view of recently proposed model for quantum Hall transitions with $c=-2$.

Parafermion Statistics and Quasihole Excitations for the Generalizations of the Paired Quantum Hall States

We continue the program started in cond-mat/9809384 and explain the statistics of the excitations for the generalizations of the paired states in the quantum Hall effect in terms of the parafermion statistics. We show that these excitations behave as combinations of bosons and parafermions. That generalizes the prior treatment of the paired (Pfaffian) state where the excitations behave as combinations of bosons and fermions. We explain what it means, from a quantum mechanical point of view, for a particle to be a `parafermion' rather than a boson or a fermion and work through several explicit examples. The resulting multiplets coincide exactly with the angular momentum multiplets found numerically for the $k+1$ particle interaction Hamiltonian on a sphere. We also present a proof that the wave functions found in cond-mat/9809384 are indeed the correlation functions of the parafermion conformal field theory.

c-Theorem for Disordered Systems

We find an analog of Zamolodchikov's c-theorem for disordered two dimensional noninteracting systems in their supersymmetric representation. For this purpose we introduce a new parameter b which flows along the renormalization group trajectories much like the central charge for unitary two dimensional field theories. However, it is not known yet if this flow is irreversible. b turns out to be related to the central extension of a certain algebra, a generalization of the Virasoro algebra, which we show may be present at the critical points of these theories. b is also related to the physical free energy of the disordered system defined on a cylinder. We discuss possible applications by computing b for two dimensional Dirac fermions with random gauge potential.

Density of states in the non-hermitian Lloyd model

We reconsider the recently proposed connection between density of states in the so-called ``non-hermitian quantum mechanics'' and the localization length for a particle moving in random potential. We argue that it is indeed possible to find the localization length from the density of states of a non-hermitian random ``Hamiltonian''. However, finding the density of states of a non-hermitian random ``Hamiltonian'' remains an open problem, contrary to previous findings in the literature.

The Haldane-Rezayi Quantum Hall State and Conformal Field Theory

We propose field theories for the bulk and edge of a quantum Hall state in the universality class of the Haldane-Rezayi wavefunction. The bulk theory is associated with the $c=-2$ conformal field theory. The topological properties of the state, such as the quasiparticle braiding statistics and ground state degeneracy on a torus, may be deduced from this conformal field theory. The 10-fold degeneracy on a torus is explained by the existence of a logarithmic operator in the $c=-2$ theory; this operator corresponds to a novel bulk excitation in the quantum Hall state. We argue that the edge theory is the $c=1$ chiral Dirac fermion, which is related in a simple way to the $c=-2$ theory of the bulk. This theory is reformulated as a truncated version of a doublet of Dirac fermions in which the $SU(2)$ symmetry -- which corresponds to the spin-rotational symmetry of the quantum Hall system -- is manifest and non-local. We make predictions for the current-voltage characteristics for transport through point contacts.

Exact Computations in the Burgers Problem

We complete the program outlined in the paper of the author with A. Migdal and sum up exactly all the fluctuations around the instanton solution of the randomly large scale driven Burgers equation. We choose the force correlation function $κ$ to be exactly quadratic function of the coordinate difference. The resulting probability distribution satisfy the differential equation proposed by Polyakov without an anomaly term. The result shows that unless the anomaly term is indeed absent it must come from other possible instanton solutions, and not from the fluctuations.

Instantons in Burgers Equation

The instanton solution for the forced Burgers equation is found. This solution describes the exponential tail of the probability distribution function of velocity differences in the region where shock waves are absent. The results agree with the one found recently by Polyakov, who used the operator product conjecture. If this conjecture is true, then our WKB asymptotics of the Wyld functional integral is exact to all orders of the perturbative expansion around the instanton solution. We explicitly checked this in the first order. We also generalized our solution for the arbitrary dimension of Burgers (=KPZ) equation. As a result we found the angular dependence of the velocity difference PDF.

Field Theory and the Phenomenon of Turbulence

We study the phenomenon of turbulence from the point of view of statistical physics. We discuss what makes the turbulent states different from the thermodynamic equilibrium and give the turbulent analog of the partition function. Then, using the soluble theory of turbulence of waves as an example, we construct the turbulent action and show how one can compute the turbulent correlation functions perturbatively thus developing the turbulent Feynman diagrams. And at last, we discuss which part of what we learnt from the turbulence of waves can be used in other types of turbulence, in particular, the hydrodynamic turbulence of fluids. This paper is based on the talk delivered at SMQFT (1993) conference at the University of Southern California.

Runaway Quarks

When heavy nuclei collide, a quark-gluon plasma is formed. The plasma is subject to strong electric field due to the charge of the colliding nuclei. The electric field can influence the behavior of the quark-gluon plasma. In particular, we might observe an increased number of quarks moving in the direction of that field, as we do in the standard electron-ion plasma. In this paper we show that this phenomenon, called the runaway quarks, does not exist.

Probability Density, Diagrammatic Technique, and Epsilon Expansion in the Theory of Wave Turbulence

We apply the methods of Field Theory to study the turbulent regimes of statistical systems. First we show how one can find their probability densities. For the case of the theory of wave turbulence with four-wave interaction we calculate them explicitly and study their properties. Using those densities we show how one can in principle calculate any correlation function in this theory by means of direct perturbative expansion in powers of the interaction. Then we give the general form of the corrections to the kinetic equation and develop an appropriate diagrammatic technique. This technique, while resembling that of $φ^4$ theory, has many new distinctive features. The role of the $ε=d-4$ parameter is played here by the parameter $κ=β+ d - α- γ$ where $β$ is the dimension of the interaction, $d$ is the space dimension, $α$ is the dimension of the energy spectrum and $γ$ is the ``classical'' wave density dimension. If $κ> 0$ then the Kolmogorov index is exact, and if $κ< 0$ then we expect it to be modified by the interaction. For $κ$ a small negative number, $α<1$ and a special form of the interaction we compute this modification explicitly with the additional assumption of the irrelevance of the IR divergencies which still needs to be verified.

Logarithmic Operators in Conformal Field Theory

Conformal field theories with correlation functions which have logarithmic singularities are considered. It is shown that those singularities imply the existence of additional operators in the theory which together with ordinary primary operators form the basis of the Jordan cell for the operator $L_{0}$. An example of the field theory possessing such correlation functions is given.
