One-particle irreducible functional approach - a new route to diagrammatic extensions of DMFT

We present an approach which is based on the one-particle irreducible (1PI) generating functional formalism and includes electronic correlations on all length-scales beyond the local correlations of dynamical mean field theory (DMFT). This formalism allows us to unify aspects of the dynamical vertex approximation (D\GammaA) and the dual fermion (DF) scheme, yielding a consistent formulation of non-local correlations at the one- and two-particle level beyond DMFT within the functional integral formalism. In particular, the considered approach includes one-particle reducible contributions from the three- and more-particle vertices in the dual fermion approach, as well as some diagrams not included in the ladder version of D\GammaA. To demonstrate the applicability and physical content of the 1PI approach, we compare the diagrammatics of 1PI, DF and D\GammaA, as well as the numerical results of these approaches for the half-filled Hubbard model in two dimensions.

Correlation effects and phonon modes softening with doping in Ba1-xKxBiO3

Monoclinic crystal structure of the undoped BaBiO3 can be described as a cubic perovskite distorted by a frozen breathing and tilting phonon modes of BiO6 octahedra. The phonon mode softening is experimentally observed [M. Braden et al., Europhysics Letters (EPL) 34, 531 (1996)] in Ba1-xKxBiO3 through potassium doping followed by a transition into an ideal cubic perovskite structure at x = 0.37 close to the appearance of superconductivity. In our previous paper [D. Korotin et al., Journal of Physics: Condensed Matter 24, 415603 (2012)] we demonstrated that it is necessary to take into account correlation effects by DFT+U method in Wannier functions basis to obtain a good agreement between the calculated and experimental values of crystal structure distortion and energy gap in BaBiO3. In the present work with the same method we calculated the breathing mode phonon frequencies as a function of potassium doping level in Ba1-xKxBiO3. Obtained frequencies are in a good agreement with experimental values and the breathing mode softening with doping effect is reproduced while calculations without consideration of correlation effects failed to do so. We shown that the cubic crystal structure becomes stable at x = 0.30 in agreement with the experimental transition to cubic perovskite at x = 0.37. The possible connections between the correlation effects, phonon mode softening, and superconductivity in Ba1-xKxBiO3 are discussed.

Magnetism of iron and nickel from rotationally invariant Hirsch-Fye quantum Monte Carlo calculations

We present a rotationally invariant Hirsch-Fye quantum Monte Carlo algorithm in which the spin rotational invariance of Hund's exchange is approximated by averaging over all possible directions of the spin quantization axis. We employ this technique to perform benchmark calculations for the two- and three-band Hubbard models on the infinite-dimensional Bethe lattice. Our results agree quantitatively well with those obtained using the continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo method with rotationally invariant Coulomb interaction. The proposed approach is employed to compute the electronic and magnetic properties of paramagnetic $α$ iron and nickel. The obtained Curie temperatures agree well with experiment. Our results indicate that the magnetic transition temperature is significantly overestimated by using the density-density type of Coulomb interaction.

Interplay between lattice, orbital, and magnetic degrees of freedom in the chain-polymer Cu(II) breathing crystals

The chain-polymer Cu(II) breathing crystals C21H19CuF12N4O6 were studied using the x-ray diffraction and ab initio band structure calculations. We show that the crystal structure modification at T=146 K, associated with the spin crossover transition, induces the changes of the orbital order in half of the Cu sites. This in turn results in the switch of the magnetic interaction sign in accordance with the Goodenough-Kanamori-Andersen theory of the coupling between the orbital and spin degrees of freedom.

Spin state transition and covalent bonding in LaCoO3

We use the dynamical mean-field theory to study a p-d Hubbard Hamiltonian for LaCoO3 derived from ab initio calculations in local density approximation (LDA+DMFT scheme). We address the origin of local moments observed above 100 K and discuss their attribution to a particular atomic multiplet in the presence of covalent Co-O bonding. We show that in solids such attribution, based on the single ion picture, is in general not possible. We explain when and how the single ion picture can be generalized to provide a useful approximation in solids. Our results demonstrate that the apparent magnitude of the local moment is not necessarily indicative of the underlying atomic multiplet. We conclude that the local moment behavior in LaCoO3 arises from the high-spin state of Co and explain the precise meaning of this statement.

Microscopic origin of the linear temperature increase of the magnetic susceptibility of BaFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$

Employing a combination of \emph{ab initio} band structure theory and dynamical mean-field theory we explain the experimentally observed linear temperature increase of the magnetic susceptibility of the iron pnictide material BaFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$. The microscopic origin of this anomalous behaviour is traced to a sharp peak in the spectral function located approximately 100 meV below the Fermi level. This peak is due to the weak dispersion of two-dimensional bands associated with the layered crystal structure of pnictides.

Role of rotational symmetry in the magnetism of a multiorbital model

Effect of rotationally-invariant Hund's rule coupling on a magnetism of multiorbital Hubbard models is studied within a dynamical mean field theory framework. Comparison of static magnetic susceptibilities and local densities of states of two- and three-orbital models of a complete rotationally invariant Coulomb interaction and a "density-density" Hartree type interaction shows the different role of spin-flip interactions for different band fillings. In the particle-hole symmetric case the Mott-Hubbard physics dominates due to the strong effective Coulomb interaction, while for the multiple electronic configurations away from half-filling (two electrons in the three band model) the formation of local magnetic moments due to Hund's exchange interaction becomes the most significant effect for itinerant magnetic systems. A shift of the temperature of magnetic ordering due to the rotationally-invariant Hund's rule coupling is found to be the largest in a three-orbital model with a two-electron occupancy where the single particle spectrum is metallic and is not sensitive to different forms of the Coulomb vertex. A larger enhancement of the effective mass in a model with a rotationally-invariant interaction is discussed. In the half-filled case we find a drastic change in the density of states close to the Mott transition which is related to the spin-flip Kondo fluctuations in a degenerate orbital case, while the corresponding shift of the magnetic transition temperature is relatively small. It is shown that a change in the ground state degeneracy due to a different symmetry of the Coulomb interaction in the density-density model leads to a breakdown of the quasiparticle peak at the Fermi level in the proximity of a Mott transition on the metallic side. We discuss the relevance of rotationally-invariant Hund's interaction in the transition metal magnetism.

Electronic correlations and crystal structure distortions in BaBiO3

BaBiO3 is a material where formally Bi4+ ions with the half-filled 6s-states form the alternating set of Bi3+ and Bi5+ ions resulting in a charge ordered insulator. The charge ordering is accompanied by the breathing distortion of the BiO6 octahedra (extension and contraction of the Bi-O bond lengths). Standard Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations fail to obtain the crystal structure instability caused by the pure breathing distortions. Combining effects of the breathing distortions and tilting of the BiO6 octahedra allows DFT to reproduce qualitatively experimentally observed insulator with monoclinic crystal structure but gives strongly underestimate breathing distortion parameter and energy gap values. In the present work we reexamine the BaBiO3 problem within the GGA+U method using a Wannier functions basis set for the Bi 6s-band. Due to high oxidation state of bismuth in this material the Bi 6s-symmetry Wannier function is predominantly extended spatially on surrounding oxygen ions and hence differs strongly from a pure atomic 6s-orbital. That is in sharp contrast to transition metal oxides (with exclusion of high oxidation state compounds) where the major part a of d-band Wannier function is concentrated on metal ion and a pure atomic d-orbital can serve as a good approximation. The GGA+U calculation results agree well with experimental data, in particular with experimental crystal structure parameters and energy gap values. Moreover, the GGA+U method allows one to reproduce the crystal structure instability due to the pure breathing distortions without octahedra tilting.

Magnetic susceptibility of Ce: an LDA+DMFT study

The magnetic properties of Ce in the $α$ and $γ$ phase are calculated within the LDA+DMFT approach. The magnetic susceptibility in these two phases shows a similar behavior over a wide temperature range: a Curie-Weiss law at high temperatures, indicating the presence of local moments, followed by a maximum in a crossover regime, and a saturation characteristic of a state with screened local moments at low temperature. The difference in experimentally observable magnetic properties is caused by the shift of the susceptibility to higher temperatures in the $α-$phase compared to the $γ-$phase, due to the larger hybridization between localized $4f-$states and conductive $spd-$electrons.

Rotationally-Invariant Exchange Interaction: The Case of Paramagnetic Iron

We present a generalization of the spin-fluctuation theory of magnetism which allows us to treat the full rotational invariance of the exchange interaction. The approach is formulated in terms of the local density approximation plus dynamical mean-field theory (LDA+DMFT), providing a systematic many-body treatment of the effect of spin-density fluctuations. This technique is employed to study the electronic and magnetic properties of paramagnetic $α$ iron. Our result for the Curie temperature is in good agreement with experiment, while the calculations with the Ising-type exchange interaction yield almost twice overestimated value.

Calculated phonon spectra of paramagnetic iron at the alpha-gamma phase transition

We compute lattice dynamical properties of iron at the bcc-fcc phase transition using dynamical mean-field theory implemented with the frozen-phonon method. Electronic correlations are found to have a strong effect on the lattice stability of paramagnetic iron in the bcc phase. Our results for the structural phase stability and lattice dynamical properties of iron are in good agreement with experiment.

Electronic correlations at the alpha-gamma structural phase transition in paramagnetic iron

We compute the equilibrium crystal structure and phase stability of iron at the alpha(bcc)-gamma(fcc) phase transition as a function of temperature, by employing a combination of ab initio methods for calculating electronic band structures and dynamical mean-field theory. The magnetic correlation energy is found to be an essential driving force behind the alpha-gamma structural phase transition in paramagnetic iron.

Role of electronic correlations in the Fermi surface formation of Na$_x$CoO$_2$

Band structure of metallic sodium cobaltate Na$_x$CoO$_2$ ($x$=0.33, 0.48, 0.61 0.72) has been investigated by local density approximation+Hubbard $U$ (LDA+$U$) method and within Gutzwiller approximation for the Co-$t_{2g}$ manifold. Correlation effects being taken into account results in suppression of the $e'_g$ hole pockets at the Fermi surface in agreement with recent angle-resolved photo-emission spectroscopy (ARPES) experiments. In the Gutzwiller approximation the bilayer splitting is significantly reduced due to the correlation effects. The formation of high spin (HS) state in Co $d$-shell was shown to be very improbable.

Linear-Temperature Dependence of Static Magnetic Susceptibility in LaFeAsO from Dynamical Mean-Field Theory

In this Letter we report the LDA+DMFT (method combining Local Density Approximation with Dynamical Mean-Field Theory) results for magnetic properties of parent superconductor LaFeAsO in paramagnetic phase. Calculated uniform magnetic susceptibility shows linear dependence at intermediate temperatures in agreement with experimental data. For high temperatures ($>$1000 K) calculations show saturation and then susceptibility decreases with temperature. Contributions to temperature dependence of the uniform susceptibility are strongly orbitally dependent. It is related to the form of the orbitally-resolved spectral functions near the Fermi energy with strong temperature dependent narrow peaks for some of the orbitals. Our results demonstrate that linear-temperature dependence of static magnetic susceptibility in pnictide superconductors can be reproduced without invoking antiferromagnetic fluctuations.

Applicability of Anderson and Hubbard model for Ce metal and cerium heavy fermion compounds

The importance of taking into account inter-site $f-f$ hybridization in electron structure calculations for Ce metal and cerium heavy fermion compounds was studied. We demonstrate that for heavy-fermion systems such as cerium compound CeCu$_2$Si$_2$ $f-f$ hybridization can be neglected and Anderson model application is well justified. On another hand for cerium metal $f-f$ hybridization is strong enough to provide the contribution to hybridization function comparable to hybridization between $4f$ and itinerant electrons. We argue that in the case of Ce only the most general Hamiltonian combining Hubbard and Anderson models should be used.

Renormalized spectral function for Co adatom on the Pt(111) surface

The strong Coulomb correlations effects in the electronic structure of magnetic Co adatom on the Pt(111) surface have been investigated. Using a realistic five d-orbital impurity Anderson model at low temperatures with parameters determined from first-principles calculations we found a striking change of the electronic structure in comparison with the LDA results. The spectral function calculated with full rotationally invariant Coulomb interaction is in good agreement with the quasiparticle region of the STM conductance spectrum. Using the calculated spin-spin correlation functions we have analyzed the formation of the magnetic moments of the Co impurity orbitals.

Dynamical mean-field approach to materials with strong electronic correlations

We review recent results on the properties of materials with correlated electrons obtained within the LDA+DMFT approach, a combination of a conventional band structure approach based on the local density approximation (LDA) and the dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT). The application to four outstanding problems in this field is discussed: (i) we compute the full valence band structure of the charge-transfer insulator NiO by explicitly including the p-d hybridization, (ii) we explain the origin for the simultaneously occuring metal-insulator transition and collapse of the magnetic moment in MnO and Fe2O3, (iii) we describe a novel GGA+DMFT scheme in terms of plane-wave pseudopotentials which allows us to compute the orbital order and cooperative Jahn-Teller distortion in KCuF3 and LaMnO3, and (iv) we provide a general explanation for the appearance of kinks in the effective dispersion of correlated electrons in systems with a pronounced three-peak spectral function without having to resort to the coupling of electrons to bosonic excitations. These results provide a considerable progress in the fully microscopic investigations of correlated electron materials.

LDA+DMFT Spectral Functions and Effective Electron Mass Enhancement in Superconductor LaFePO

In this Letter we report the first LDA+DMFT results (method combining Local Density Approximation with Dynamical Mean-Field Theory) for spectral properties of superconductor LaFePO. Calculated {\bf k}-resolved spectral functions reproduce recent angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) data [D. H. Lu {\it et al}., Nature {\bf 455}, 81 (2008)]. Obtained effective electron mass enhancement values $m^{*}/m\approx$ 1.9 -- 2.2 are in good agreement with infrared and optical studies [M. M. Qazilbash {\it et al}., Nature Phys. {\bf 5}, 647 (2009)], de Haas--van Alphen, electrical resistivity, and electronic specific heat measurements results, that unambiguously evidence for moderate correlations strength in LaFePO. Similar values of $m^{*}/m$ were found in the other Fe-based superconductors with substantially different superconducting transition temperatures. Thus, the dynamical correlation effects are essential in the Fe-based superconductors, but the strength of electronic correlations does not determine the value of superconducting transition temperature.
