Construction of Wannier functions from localized atomic-like orbitals

The problem of construction of the Wannier functions (WFs) in a restricted Hilbert space of eigenstates of the one-electron Hamiltonian $\hat{H}$ (forming the so-called low-energy part of the spectrum) can be formulated in several different ways. One possibility is to use the projector-operator techniques, which pick up a set of trial atomic orbitals and project them onto the given Hilbert space. Another possibility is to employ the downfolding method, which eliminates the high-energy part of the spectrum and incorporates all related to it properties into the energy-dependence of an effective Hamiltonian. We show that by modifying the high-energy part of the spectrum of the original Hamiltonian $\hat{H}$, which is rather irrelevant to the construction of WFs in the low-energy part of the spectrum, these two methods can be formulated in an absolutely exact and identical form, so that the main difference between them is reduced to the choice of the trial orbitals. Concerning the latter part of the problem, we argue that an optimal choice for trial orbitals can be based on the maximization of the site-diagonal part of the density matrix. The main idea is illustrated for a simple toy model, consisting of only two bands, as well as for a more realistic example of $t_{2g}$ bands in V$_2$O$_3$. An analogy with the search of the ground state of a many-electron system is also discussed.

Orbital densities functional

Local density approximation (LDA) to the density functional theory (DFT) has continuous derivative of total energy as a number of electrons function and continuous exchange-correlation potential, while in exact DFT both should be discontinuous as number of electrons goes through an integer value. We propose orbital densities functional (ODF) (with orbitals defined as Wannier functions) that by construction obeys this discontinuity condition. By its variation one-electron equations are obtained with potential in the form of projection operator. The operator increases a separation between occupied and empty bands thus curing LDA deficiency of energy gap value systematic underestimation. Orbital densities functional minimization gives ground state orbital and total electron densities. The ODF expression for the energy of orbital densities fluctuations around the ground state values defines ODF fluctuation Hamiltonian that allows to treat correlation effects. Dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) was used to solve this Hamiltonian with quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) method for effective impurity problem. We have applied ODF method to the problem of metal-insulator transition in lanthanum trihydride LaH_{3-x}. In LDA calculations ground state of this material is metallic for all values of hydrogen nonstoichiometry x while experimentally the system is insulating for x < 0.3. ODF method gave paramagnetic insulator solution for LaH_3 and LaH_{2.75} but metallic state for LaH_{2.5}.

Evidence for strong electronic correlations in the spectra of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$

The importance of electronic correlation effects in the layered perovskite Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ is evidenced. To this end we use state-of-the-art LDA+DMFT (Local Density Approximation + Dynamical Mean-Field Theory) in the basis of Wannier functions to compute spectral functions and the quasiparticle dispersion of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$. The spectra are found to be in good agreement with various spectroscopic experiments. We also calculate the $\textbf{k}$-dependence of the quasiparticle bands and compare the results with new angle resolved photoemission (ARPES) data. Two typical manifestations of strong Coulomb correlations are revealed: (i) the calculated quasiparticle mass enhancement of $m^*/m \approx2.5$ agrees with various experimental results, and (ii) the satellite structure at about 3 eV binding energy observed in photoemission experiments is shown to be the lower Hubbard band. For these reasons Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ is identified as a strongly correlated 4$d$ electron material.

The role of transition metal impurities and oxygen vacancies in the formation of ferromagnetism in Co-doped TiO2

We have investigated the role of transition metal impurities and oxygen vacancies in the formation of ferromagnetism in Co-doped TiO2 using LSDA+U approach which takes into account strong on-cite Coulomb correlations for electronic structure calculations. Several model systems such as supercells of rutile TiO2 with Co{+2} ion in high-spin state substituted into titanium cite and with oxygen vacancies were considered. We found that exchange interaction of Co magnetic ions is ferromagnetic, but very weak due to the large average impurity-impurity distance. However, its strength becomes three times stronger when there is a magnetic vacancy nearby. The magnetic moment values are 3μ_B for Co{2+} and 1μ_B for vacancy with the opposite directions of them. Our investigation showed that exchange interaction energy of Co and vacancy moments varies from 330meV to 40meV depending on the distance between them in the supercell. We suppose that strong interaction between Co and vacancy moments should be taken into account for the explanation of high Curie temperature value in Co-doped TiO2.

Orbital-assisted metal-insulator transition in VO$_{2}$

We found direct experimental evidence for an orbital switching in the V 3d states across the metal-insulator transition in VO$_{2}$. We have used soft-x-ray absorption spectroscopy at the V $L_{2,3}$ edges as a sensitive local probe, and have determined quantitatively the orbital polarizations. These results strongly suggest that, in going from the metallic to the insulating state, the orbital occupation changes in a manner that charge fluctuations and effective band widths are reduced, that the system becomes more 1-dimensional and more susceptible to a Peierls-like transition, and that the required massive orbital switching can only be made if the system is close to a Mott insulating regime.

Electronic Structure and Exchange Interactions of Na$_{2}$V$_{3}$O$_{7}$

We have performed first-principle calculations of the electronic structure and exchange couplings for the nanotube compound Na$_{2}$V$_{3}$O$_{7}$ using the LDA+U approach. Our results show that while the intra-ring exchange interactions are mainly antiferromagnetic, the inter-ring couplings are {\it ferromagnetic}. We argue that this is a consequence of the strong hybridization between filled and vacant 3d vanadium orbitals due to the low symmetry of Na$_{2}$V$_{3}$O$_{7}$, which results into strong - and often dominant - ferromagnetic contributions to the total exchange interaction between vanadium atoms. A comparison with results of previous works is included.

Pseudogaps in Strongly Correlated Metals: A generalized dynamical mean-field theory approach

We generalize the dynamical-mean field (DMFT) approximation by including into the DMFT equations some length scale via a momentum dependent ``external'' self-energy S(k). This external self-energy describes non-local dynamical correlations induced by short-ranged collective SDW-like antiferromagnetic spin (or CDW-like charge) fluctuations. At high enough temperatures these fluctuations can be viewed as a quenched Gaussian random field with finite correlation length. This generalized DMFT+Sk approach is used for the numerical solution of the weakly doped one-band Hubbard model with repulsive Coulomb interaction on a square lattice with nearest and next nearest neighbour hopping. The effective single impurity problem in this generalized DMFT+Sk is solved by numerical renormalization group (NRG). Both types of strongly correlated metals, namely (i) doped Mott insulator and (ii) the case of bandwidth W~U (U - value of local Coulomb interaction) are considered. Densities of states, spectral functions and ARPES spectra calculated within DMFT+Sk show a pseudogap formation near the Fermi level of the quasiparticle band.

Charge order and spin-singlet pairs formation in Ti4O7

Charge ordering in the low-temperature triclinic structure of titanium oxide (Ti4O7) is investigated using the local density approximation (LDA)+U method. Although the total 3d charge separation is rather small, an orbital order parameter defined as the difference between t2g occupancies of Ti$^{3+}$ and Ti$^{4+}$ cations is large and gives direct evidence for charge ordering. Ti 4s and 4p states make a large contribution to the static "screening" of the total 3d charge difference. This effective charge screening leads to complete loss of the disproportionation between the charges at 3+ and 4+ Ti sites. The occupied t2g states of Ti$^{3+}$ cations are predominantly of $d_{xy}$ character and form a spin-singlet molecular orbital via strong direct antiferromagnetic exchange coupling between neighboring Ti(1) and Ti(3) sites, whereas the role of superexchange is found to be negligible.

Momentum-resolved spectral functions of SrVO$_3$ calculated by LDA+DMFT

LDA+DMFT, the merger of density functional theory in the local density approximation and dynamical mean-field theory, has been mostly employed to calculate k-integrated spectra accessible by photoemission spectroscopy. In this paper, we calculate k-resolved spectral functions by LDA+DMFT. To this end, we employ the Nth order muffin-tin (NMTO) downfolding to set up an effective low-energy Hamiltonian with three t_2g orbitals. This downfolded Hamiltonian is solved by DMFT yielding k-dependent spectra. Our results show renormalized quasiparticle bands over a broad energy range from -0.7 eV to +0.9 eV with small ``kinks'', discernible in the dispersion below the Fermi energy.

A new hybrid LDA and Generalized Tight-Binding method for the electronic structure calculations of strongly correlated electron systems

A novel hybrid scheme is proposed. The {\it ab initio} LDA calculation is used to construct the Wannier functions and obtain single electron and Coulomb parameters of the multiband Hubbard-type model. In strong correlation regime the electronic structure within multiband Hubbard model is calculated by the Generalized Tight-Binding (GTB) method, that combines the exact diagonalization of the model Hamiltonian for a small cluster (unit cell) with perturbation treatment of the intercluster hopping and interactions. For undoped La$_2$CuO$_4$ and Nd$_2$CuO$_4$ this scheme results in charge transfer insulators with correct values of gaps and dispersions of bands in agreement to the ARPES data.

Transition state method and Wannier functions

We propose a computational scheme for materials where standard Local Density Approximation (LDA) fails to produce a satisfactory description of excitation energies. The method uses Slater's "transition state" approximation and Wannier functions basis set. We define a correction to LDA functional in such a way that its variation produces one-electron energies for Wannier functions equal to the energies obtained in "transition state" constrained LDA calculations. In the result eigenvalues of the proposed functional could be interpreted as excitation energies of the system under consideration. The method was applied to MgO, Si, NiO and BaBiO$_3$ and gave an improved agreement with experimental data of energy gap values comparing with LDA.

Crystal-field splitting for low symmetry systems in ab initio calculations

In the framework of the LDA+U approximation we propose the direct way of calculation of crystal-field excitation energy and apply it to La and Y titanates. The method developed can be useful for comparison with the results of spectroscopic measurements because it takes into account fast relaxations of electronic system. For titanates these relaxation processes reduce the value of crystal-field splitting by $\sim30%$ as compared with the difference of LDA one electron energies. However, the crystal-field excitation energy in these systems is still large enough to make an orbital liquid formation rather unlikely and experimentally observed isotropic magnetism remains unexplained.

Pseudogaps in Strongly Correlated Metals

We generalize the dynamical-mean field (DMFT) approximation by including into the DMFT equations some length scale via a (momentum dependent) ``external'' self-energy Σ_k. This external self-energy describes non-local dynamical correlations induced by short-ranged collective SDW-like antiferromagnetic spin (or CDW-like charge) fluctuations. At high enough temperatures these fluctuations can be viewed as a quenched Gaussian random field with finite correlation length. This generalized DMFT+Σ_k approach is used for the numerical solution of the weakly doped one--band Hubbard model with repulsive Coulomb interaction on a square lattice with nearest and next nearest neighbour hopping. The effective single impurity problem in this generalized DMFT+Σ_k is solved by numerical renormalization group (NRG). Both types of strongly correlated metals, namely (i) doped Mott insulator and (ii) the case of bandwidth W<=U (U - value of local Coulomb interaction) are considered. Densities of states, spectral functions and ARPES spectra calculated within DMFT+Σ_k show a pseudogap formation near the Fermi level of the quasiparticle band.

Charge order in Fe2OBO3: An LSDA+U study

Charge ordering in the low-temperature monoclinic structure of iron oxoborate (Fe2OBO3) is investigated using the local spin density approximation (LSDA)+U method. While the difference between t_{2g} minority occupancies of Fe^{2+} and Fe^{3+} cations is large and gives direct evidence for charge ordering, the static "screening" is so effective that the total 3d charge separation is rather small. The occupied Fe^{2+} and Fe^{3+} cations are ordered alternately within the chain which is infinite along the a-direction. The charge order obtained by LSDA+U is consistent with observed enlargement of the βangle. An analysis of the exchange interaction parameters demonstrates the predominance of the interribbon exchange interactions which determine the whole L-type ferrimagnetic spin structure.

Magnetic state of plutonium ion in metallic Pu and its compounds

By LDA+U method with spin-orbit coupling (LDA+U+SO) the magnetic state and electronic structure have been investigated for plutonium in δand αphases and for Pu compounds: PuN, PuCoGa5, PuRh2, PuSi2, PuTe, and PuSb. For metallic plutonium in both phases in agreement with experiment a nonmagnetic ground state was found with Pu ions in f^6 configuration with zero values of spin, orbital, and total moments. This result is determined by a strong spin-orbit coupling in 5f shell that gives in LDA calculation a pronounced splitting of 5f states on f^{5/2} and f^{7/2} subbands. A Fermi level is in a pseudogap between them, so that f^{5/2} subshell is already nearly completely filled with six electrons before Coulomb correlation effects were taken into account. The competition between spin-orbit coupling and exchange (Hund) interaction (favoring magnetic ground state) in 5f shell is so delicately balanced, that a small increase (less than 15%) of exchange interaction parameter value from J_H=0.48eV obtained in constrain LDA calculation would result in a magnetic ground state with nonzero spin and orbital moment values. For Pu compounds investigated in the present work, predominantly f^6 configuration with nonzero magnetic moments was found in PuCoGa5, PuSi2, and PuTe, while PuN, PuRh2, and PuSb have f^5 configuration with sizeable magnetic moment values. Whereas pure jj coupling scheme was found to be valid for metallic plutonium, intermediate coupling scheme is needed to describe 5f shell in Pu compounds. The results of our calculations show that both spin-orbit coupling and exchange interaction terms in the Hamiltonian must be treated in a general matrix form for Pu and its compounds.

Comparative study of correlation effects in CaVO3 and SrVO3

We present parameter-free LDA+DMFT (local density approximation + dynamical mean field theory) results for the many-body spectra of cubic SrVO3 and orthorhombic CaVO3. Both systems are found to be strongly correlated metals, but not on the verge of a metal-insulator transition. In spite of the considerably smaller V-O-V bond angle in CaVO3 the LDA+DMFT spectra of the two systems for energies E E_F shows more pronounced, albeit still small, differences. This is in contrast to earlier theoretical and experimental conclusions, but in good agreement with recent bulk-sensitive photoemission and x-ray absorption experiments.

Weak ferromagnetism in antiferromagnets: Fe$_{2}$O$_{3}$ and La$_{2}$CuO$_{4}$

The problem of weak ferromagnetism in antiferromagnets due to canting of magnetic moments was treated using Green's function technique. At first the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the electronic Hamiltonian corresponding to collinear magnetic configuration are calculated which are then used to determine first and second variations of the total energy as a function of the magnetic moments canting angle. Spin-orbit coupling is taken into account via perturbation theory. The results of calculations are used to determine an effective spin Hamiltonian. This Hamiltonian can be mapped on conventional spin Hamiltonian that allows to determine parameters of isotropic and anisotropic (Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya) exchange interactions. The method was applied to the typical antiferromagnets with weak ferromagnetism Fe$_{2}$O$_{3}$ and La$_{2}$CuO$_{4}$. The obtained directions and values of the magnetic moments canting angles are in a reasonable agreement with experimental data.

Determination of the orbital moment and crystal field splitting in LaTiO$_{3}$

Utilizing a sum-rule in a spin-resolved photoelectron spectroscopic experiment with circularly polarized light, we show that the orbital moment in LaTiO$_3$ is strongly reduced both below and above the Néel temperature. Using Ti $L_{2,3}$ x-ray absorption spectroscopy as a local probe, we found that the crystal field splitting in the $t_{2g}$ subshell is about 0.12-0.30 eV. This large splitting does not facilitate the formation of an orbital liquid.
