Determination of a set of fundamental constants from molecular hydrogen ion spectroscopy: a modeling study

The rovibrational transition frequencies of molecular hydrogen ions (MHI) can be accurately computed using ab initio nonrelativistic quantum electrodynamics. A subset of the fundamental constants are required input. We analyze how, once upcoming ultra-high-accuracy spectroscopy data has been obtained, that subset of constants can be determined with greater accuracy. Our analysis shows that under realistic assumptions the uncertainties of the mass ratios of proton, deuteron and triton relative to the electron, and of the triton charge radius can be reduced more than onehundred-fold compared to today (CODATA 2022). Furthermore, the Rydberg constant, as well as the proton and deuteron charge radii can be determined with uncertainties similar to those of today, but solely using data from electronic systems. The implications are discussed.

Hadronic light-by-light scattering contribution to 1S-2S transition in muonium

We study hadronic light-by-light scattering contribution to the energy interval (1S-2S) in muonium. Various amplitudes of interaction of a muon and an electron are constructed, in which the effect of hadronic scattering of light-by-light is determined using the transition form factor of two photons into a meson. Their contributions to the particle interaction operator in the case of S-states are obtained in integral form, and to the energy spectrum in numerical form. The contributions of pseudoscalar, scalar, axial vector mesons are taken into account.

Polarizability of the kaonic helium atom

The static dipole polarizability of metastable states in the kaonic helium atoms is studied. We use the complex coordinate rotation method to properly account for the resonant nature of the states. Our calculations show that some of the states are not stable with respect to collisional quenching in a dense helium target and should not be detected in the experiment.

Contribution of hadronic light-by-light scattering to the hyperfine structure of muonium

The contribution of hadronic scattering of light-by-light to the hyperfine structure of muonium is calculated using experimental data on the transition form factors of two photons into a hadron. The amplitudes of interaction between a muon and an electron with horizontal and vertical exchange are constructed. The contributions due to the exchange of pseudoscalar, axial vector, scalar and tensor mesons are taken into account.

Energy levels of mesonic helium in quantum electrodynamics

On the basis of variational method we study energy levels of pionic helium $(π-e-He)$ and kaonic helium $(K-e-He)$ with an electron in ground state and a meson in excited state with principal and orbital quantum numbers $n\sim l+1\sim 20$. Variational wave functions are taken in the Gaussian form. Matrix elements of the basic Hamiltonian and corrections to vacuum polarization and relativism are calculated analytically in a closed form. We calculate some bound state energies and transition frequencies which can be studied in the experiment.

Magnetic dipole transitions in the H$_2^+$ ion

The magnetic dipole transitions in the homonuclear molecular ion H$_2^+$ are obtained for a wide range of $v$ and $L$, vibrational and total orbital momentum quantum numbers, respectively. Calculations are performed in the nonrelativistic approximation. Spin consideration is also included.

Forbidden "ortho"--"para" electric dipole transitions in H$_2^+$ ion

We present the first systematic calculation of the electric dipole forbidden transitions in the homonuclear molecular ion H$_2^+$. We get that the transition rate from the ground "ortho" $(v\!=\!0,N\!=\!1,J\!=\!1/2)$ state to the ground "para" $(v\!=\!0,N\!=\!0,J\!=\!1/2)$ state is $4.9\!\times\!10^{-14}$ s$^{-1}$ that corresponds to the lifetime of $6.4\!\times\!10^5$ yr. The Einstein coefficient $A_{nn'}$ for the $(v\!=\!1,N\!=\!1,J\!=\!1/2)\!\to\!(v\!=\!0,N\!=\!0,J\!=\!1/2)$ transition is equal to $0.12\!\times\!10^{-9}$ s$^{-1}$, which is of "comparable" order with the values for quadrupole transitions in H$_2^+$. It gives hope that the "ortho"--"para" transitions in H$_2^+$ can be induced by the laser spectroscopy.

Proton-Electron Mass Ratio from Laser Spectroscopy of HD$^+$ at the Part-Per-Trillion Level

Accepted values of the masses of several subatomic particles have been under debate since recent measurements in Penning traps produced more precise yet incompatible results, implying possible inconsistencies in closely related physical constants like the proton-electron and deuteron-proton mass ratios. These quantities also influence the predicted vibrational spectrum of the deuterated molecular hydrogen ion in its electronic ground state, of which we measured the v=0 - 9 overtone transition frequency with an uncertainty of 2.9 parts-per-trillion through Doppler-free two-photon laser spectroscopy. Leveraging high-precision ab initio calculations we convert our measurement to tight constraints on the proton-electron and deuteron-proton mass ratios, consistent with the most recent Penning-trap determinations of these quantities, and yielding a new value of the proton-electron mass ratio with an unprecedented precision of 21 parts-per-trillion.

Ground state hyperfine structure of light muon-electron ions

The ground state hyperfine splitting of light muon-electron ions of lithium, beryllium, boron and helium is calculated on the basis of analytical perturbation theory in terms of small parameters of the fine structure constant and electron-muon mass ratio. The corrections of vacuum polarization, nuclear structure and recoil effects and electron vertex corrections are taken into account. The dependence of the corrections on the nucleus charge Z is studied. The obtained total values of hyperfine splitting intervals can be used for comparison with future experimental data.

Proton-electron mass ratio by high-resolution optical spectroscopy of ion ensembles in the resolved-carrier regime

Optical spectroscopy in the gas phase is a key tool to elucidate the structure of atoms and molecules and of their interaction with external fields. The line resolution is usually limited by a combination of first-order Doppler broadening due to particle thermal motion and of a short transit time through the excitation beam. For trapped particles, suitable laser cooling techniques can lead to strong confinement (Lamb-Dicke regime, LDR) and thus to optical spectroscopy free of these effects. For non-laser coolable spectroscopy ions, this has so far only been achieved when trapping one or two atomic ions, together with a single laser-coolable atomic ion [1,2]. Here we show that one-photon optical spectroscopy free of Doppler and transit broadening can also be obtained with more easily prepared ensembles of ions, if performed with mid-infrared radiation. We demonstrate the method on molecular ions. We trap approximately 100 molecular hydrogen ions (HD$^{+}$) within a Coulomb cluster of a few thousand laser-cooled atomic ions and perform laser spectroscopy of the fundamental vibrational transition. Transition frequencies were determined with lowest uncertainty of 3.3$\times$10$^{-12}$ fractionally. As an application, we determine the proton-electron mass ratio by matching a precise ab initio calculation with the measured vibrational frequency.

Low-lying electron energy levels in three-particle electron-muon ions $(μe Li)$, $(μe Be)$, $(μe B)$

The electron Lamb shift $(2P-2S)$ and the energy interval $(2S-1S)$ in muon-electron ions of lithium, beryllium, and boron have been calculated within the framework of the perturbation theory method for the fine structure constant and the electron-muon mass ratio. The corrections of the first and second orders of the perturbation theory, which include the effects of vacuum polarization, nuclear structure and recoil, are taken into account. The obtained analytical results in perturbation theory are compared with the results of calculations within the variational approach. The obtained values for the Lamb shift $(2P-2S)$ and the interval $(2S-1S)$ can be used for comparison with future experimental data and verification of quantum electrodynamics.

Hyperfine structure and electric quadrupole transitions in the deuterium molecular ion

Molecular hydrogen ions are of metrological relevance due to the possibility of precise theoretical evaluation of their spectrum and of external-field-induced shifts. In homonuclear molecular ions the electric dipole $E1$ transitions are strongly suppressed, and of primary laser spectroscopy interest is the electric quadrupole ($E2$) transition spectrum. In continuation of previous work on the H$_2^+$ ion, we report here the results of the calculations of the hyperfine structure of the laser-induced electric quadrupole transitions between a large set of ro-vibrational states of D$_2^+$; the inaccuracies of previous evaluations have been corrected. The effects of the laser polarization are studied in detail. We show that the electric quadrupole moment of the deuteron can in principle be determined with low fractional uncertainty $(\simeq1\times10^{-4})$ by comparing the results presented here with future data from precision spectroscopy of D$_2^+$.

Nonrelativistic energies and predissociation widths of quasibound states in the Li$dμ$ molecular ions

Muonic molecular ions $^6$Li$^{3+}dμ$ and $^7$Li$^{3+}dμ$ are studied numerically. Using the complex coordinate rotation method we found six rotational states (three for each isotope), which are resonant states with the life-time of an order of picoseconds. These molecular systems may be of interest for studying low-energy fusion reactions. A key quantity, $|Ψ(0)|^2$, the wave function squared at the coalescence point of the nuclei is calculated for $S$ states for both isotopes with a precision better than 3\%.

Leading order relativistic corrections to the ro-vibrational spectrum of $\mbox{H}^+_2$ and $\mbox{HD}^+$ molecular ions

High-precision variational calculations of the operators for the relativistic corrections in the leading $mα^4$ order are presented. The ro-vibrational states in the range of the total orbital angular momentum $L\!=\!0\!-\!4$ and vibrational quantum number $v\!=\!0\!-\!10$ for the $\mbox{H}_2^+$ and $\mbox{HD}^+$ molecular ions are considered. We estimate that about ten significant digits are obtained. This high precision is required for making theoretical predictions for transition frequencies at the level of $10^{-12}$ relative uncertainty.

Canceling spin-dependent contributions and systematic shifts in precision spectroscopy of the molecular hydrogen ions

We consider the application of a basic principle of quantum theory, the tracelessness of a certain class of hamiltonians, to the precision spectroscopy of the molecular hydrogen ions. We show that it is possible to obtain the spin-averaged transition frequencies between states from a simple weighted sum of experimentally accessible spin-dependent transition frequencies. We discuss the cases ${\rm H}_{2}^{+}$ and ${\rm HD}^{+}$, which are distinct in the multipole character of their rovibrational transitions. Inclusion of additional frequencies permits canceling also the electric quadrupole shift, the Zeeman shift and partially the Stark shift. In this context, we find that measuring electric quadrupole transitions in ${\rm HD}^{+}$ is advantageous. The required experimental effort appears reasonable.

Proton-electron mass ratio from HD$^+$ revisited

We present a new derivation of the proton-electron mass ratio from the hydrogen molecular ion, HD$^+$. The derivation entails the adjustment of the mass ratio in highly precise theory so as to reproduce accurately measured ro-vibrational frequencies. This work is motivated by recent improvements of the theory, as well as the more accurate value of the electron mass in the recently published CODATA-14 set of fundamental constants, which justifies using it as input data in the adjustment, rather than the proton mass value as done in previous works. This leads to significantly different sensitivity coefficients and, consequently, a different value and larger uncertainty margin of the proton-electron mass ratio as obtained from HD$^+$.

On robust feedback for systems with multidimensional control

The paper deals with local robust feedback synthesis for systems with multidimensional control and unknown bounded perturbations. Using V.~I.~Korobov's controllability function method, we construct a bounded control which steers an arbitrary initial point to the origin in some finite time; an estimate from above for the time of motion is given. We have found the range of a segment where the perturbations can vary. As an example we consider the problem of stopping the oscillations of the system of two coupled pendulums.
