Studies and application of bent crystals for beam steering at 70-GeV IHEP accelerator

This report overviews studies accomplished in the U70 proton synchrotron of IHEP-Protvino during the recent two decades. Major attention is paid to a routine application of bent crystals for beam extraction from the machine. It has been confirmed experimentally that efficiency of beam extraction with a crystal deflector of around 85% is well feasible for a proton beam with intensity up to 1012 protons per cycle. Another trend is to use bent crystals for halo collimation in a high energy collider. New promising options emerge for, say, LHC and ILC based on the "volume reflection" effect, which has been discovered recently in machine study runs at U70 of IHEP (50 GeV) and SPS of CERN (400 GeV).

Radiation of photons in process of charge particle volume reflection in bent single crystal

New type of radiation in crystals is predicted and investigated in computer simulation. It is shown that process of volume reflection of electrons and positrons in bent crystals is accomplished with high-power radiation of photons. Volume reflection radiation has intensity comparable with known channeling radiation, but it is less sensitive to entrance angle and sign of charge of a particle. Simulated spectra of radiation power are presented for 10 GeV and 200GeV particles.

Extraction of the Proton Beam from the 70 GeV IHEP Accelerator

This paper presents the physical background for particle extraction from IHEP accelerator using short bent silicon crystals, analyses the results of the studies, considers in detail the regime of simultaneous work of crystal extraction and several internal targets. It is experimentally shown that the use of short crystals allows the extraction of beams with intensity of 10e12 proton/cycle with efficiency of 85%.

Accelerator Tests of Crystal Undulators

A series of Silicon crystal undulator samples were produced based on the approach presented in PRL 90 (2003) 034801, with the periods of undulation from 0.1 mm to 1 mm, and the number of periods on the order of 10. The samples were characterized by X-rays, revealing the sine-like shape of the crystal lattice in the bulk. Next step in the characterization has been the channeling tests done with 70 GeV protons, where good channeling properties of the undulated Silicon lattice have been observed. The photon radiation tests of crystal undulators with high energy positrons are in progress on several locations: IHEP Protvino, LNF Frascati, and CERN SPS. The progress in the experimental activities and the predictions from detailed simulations are reported.

Proton Extraction from IHEP Accelerator Using Bent Crystals

IHEP Protvino has pioneered the wide practical use of bent crystals as optical elements in high-energy beams for beam extraction and deflection on permanent basis since 1989. In the course of IHEP experiments, crystal channeling has been developed into efficient instrument for particle steering at accelerators, working in predictable, reliable manner with beams of very high intensity over years. Crystal systems extract 70 GeV protons from IHEP main ring with efficiency of 85% at intensity of 1.E12, basing on multi-pass mechanism of channeling proposed theoretically and realised experimentally at IHEP. Today, six locations on the IHEP 70-GeV main ring of the accelerator facility are equipped by crystal extraction systems, serving mostly for routine applications rather than for research and allowing a simultaneous run of several particle physics experiments, thus significantly enriching the IHEP physics program. The long successful history of large-scale crystal exploitation at IHEP should help to incorporate channeling crystals into accelerator systems worldwide in order to create unique systems for beam delivery. We report recent results from the research and exploitation of crystal extraction systems at IHEP.

Crystal Undulator As A Novel Compact Source Of Radiation

A crystalline undulator (CU) with periodically deformed crystallographic planes is capable of deflecting charged particles with the same strength as an equivalent magnetic field of 1000 T and could provide quite a short period L in the sub-millimeter range. We present an idea for creation of a CU and report its first realization. One face of a silicon crystal was given periodic micro-scratches (grooves), with a period of 1 mm, by means of a diamond blade. The X-ray tests of the crystal deformation have shown that a sinusoidal-like shape of crystalline planes goes through the bulk of the crystal. This opens up the possibility for experiments with high-energy particles channeled in CU, a novel compact source of radiation. The first experiment on photon emission in CU has been started at LNF with 800 MeV positrons aiming to produce 50 keV undulator photons.

Highly efficient crystal deflector for channeling extraction of a proton beam from accelerators

The design and performance of a novel crystal deflector for proton beams are reported. A silicon crystal was used to channel and extract 70 GeV protons from the U-70 accelerator in Protvino with an efficiency of 85%, as measured for a beam of ~1e12 protons directed towards crystals of ~2 mm length in spills of ~2 s duration. Experimental data agree with the theoretically predicted Monte Carlo results for channeling. The technique allows one to manufacture a very short deflector along the beam direction (2 mm). Consequently, multiple encounters of circulating particles with the crystal are possible with little probability of multiple scattering and nuclear interactions per encounter. Thus, drastic increase in efficiency for particle extraction out of the accelerator was attained. We show the characteristics of the crystal- deflector and the technology behind it. Such an achievement is important in devising a more efficient use of the U-70 accelerator and provides crucial support for implementing crystal-assisted slow extraction and collimation in other machines, such as the Tevatron, RHIC, the AGS, the SNS, COSY, and the LHC.

Experimental Study For The Feasibility Of A Crystalline Undulator

We present an idea for creation of a crystalline undulator and report its first realization. One face of a silicon crystal was given periodic micro-scratches (trenches) by means of a diamond blade. The X-ray tests of the crystal deformation due to given periodic pattern of surface scratches have shown that a sinusoidal shape is observed on both the scratched surface and the opposite (unscratched) face of the crystal, that is, a periodic sinusoidal deformation goes through the bulk of the crystal. This opens up the possibility for experiments with high-energy particles channeled in crystalline undulator, a novel compact source of radiation.

The Investigations Of Beam Extraction And Collimation At U-70 Proton Synchrotron Of IHEP By Using Short Silicon Crystals

The new results of using short (2-4mm) bent crystals for extraction and collimation of proton beam at IHEP 70 Gev proton synchrotron are reported. A broad range of energies from 6 to 65 GeV has been studied in the same crystal collimation set-up. The efficiency of extraction more than 85% and intensity more than 10E12 were obtained by using crystal with the length 2-mm and the angle 1 mrad. The new regime of extraction is applied now at the accelerator to deliver the beam for different experimental setups within the range of intensity 10E7-10E12ppp.

Optimization of the parameters in the RHIC single crystal heavy ion collimation

In the framework of the project to design and test a collimation system prototype using bent channeling crystal for cleaning of the RHIC heavy ion beam halo, we have studied the optimal length and bending angle of a silicon (110) single crystal proposed to be a primary element situated upstream of the traditional heavy amorphous collimator. Besides the matters of the channeling and collimation efficiency, we also looked into the impact the crystal may have on the non-channeled particles that go on circulating in the ring, so as to reduce the momentum offset of the particles scattered of the crystal.

Crystal collimation experiment on 70-GeV proton accelerator

The first proof-of-principle experiment on "crystal collimation" was performed with 70-GeV protons on IHEP accelerator. A bent crystal installed in the ring as a primary element upstream of a collimator has reduced the radiation levels downstream in the accelerator by a factor of two. The measurements agree with Monte Carlo predictions.

Progress in crystal extraction and collimation

Recent IHEP Protvino experiments show efficiencies of crystal-assisted slow extraction and collimation of 85.3+-2.8%, at the intensities of the channeled beam on the order of 10^12 proton per spill of 2 s duration. The obtained experimental data well follows the theory predictions. We compare the measurements against theory and outline the theoretical potential for further improvement in the efficiency of the technique. This success is important for the efficient use of IHEP accelerator and for implementation of crystal-assisted collimation at RHIC and slow extraction from AGS onto E952, now in preparation. Future applications, spanning in the energy from order of 1 GeV (scraping in SNS, slow extraction from COSY and medical accelerators) to order of 1 TeV and beyond (scraping in Tevatron, LHC, VLHC), can benefit from these studies.

New projects of crystal extraction at IHEP 70-GeV accelerator

Using channeling in a 5-mm crystal with bending angle of 0.65 mrad, a record high efficiency, over 60%, of particle extraction from accelerator was achieved. The extracted beam intensity was up to 5.2*10^11 protons per spill of 0.5 s duration. Also, the first proof-of-principle experiment on 'crystal collimation' was performed where crystal - serving as a scraper - has reduced the radiation level in the accelerator by a factor of two. The measurements agree with Monte Carlo predictions.

Application of bent crystals at IHEP 70-GeV accelerator to enhance the efficiency of its usage

Bent crystal was extracting 70-GeV protons with average intensity 4*10^11 (as measured in external beamline) per spill of 1.6 s duration, in parallel to the simultaneous work of two internal targets in the accelerator ring. An additional crystal, placed in the external beamline, was deflecting a small part of the extracted beam with intensity 10^7 protons toward another physics experiment. Crystal-extracted beam had a typical size of 4 mm by 4 mm fwhm at the end of the external beamline. Measurements for the extraction efficiency and other characteristics at the simultaneous work of four experimental set-ups are presented. With crystal working in the above-said regime during one month, no degradation of channeling was observed. The studies of extraction efficiency have been continued with new crystals.
