Dynamics of the multiferroic LiCuVO4 influenced by electric field

We present the electron spin resonance study of the influence of an electric field on the low-field multiferroic magnetic state in LiCuVO4. The shift of the magnetic resonance spectra in the electric field has been observed experimentally. Symmetry analysis has been conducted in order to describe the static properties of the magnetic system. The low-frequency dynamics of LiCuVO4 in magnetic and electric fields was considered in the framework of hydrodynamic approach. It was shown that the application of the external electric field leads to the change of the configuration of the magnetic system before and after spin-flop reorientation. Satisfactory agreement was obtained between the results of experimental studies and theoretical consideration.

Exotic phases of frustrated antiferromagnet LiCu2O2

7Li NMR spectra were measured in a magnetic field up to 17 T at temperatures 5-30 K on single crystalline LiCu2O2. Earlier reported anomalies on magnetization curves correspond to magnetic field values where we observe changes of the NMR spectral shape. For the interpretation of the field and temperature evolutions of our NMR spectra, the magnetic structures were analyzed in the frame of the phenomenological theoretical approach of the Dzyaloshinskii-Landau theory. A set of possible planar and collinear structures was obtained. Most of these structures have an unusual configuration; they are characterized by a two-component order parameter and their magnetic moments vary harmonically not only in direction, but also in size. From the modeling of the observed spectra, a possible scenario of magnetic structure transformations is obtained.

On twinning in smectic crystals

It is shown that mechanical twinning in smectic crystals is possible. The structure of the boundary of twins for a small disorientation of crystallites is determined. The periodic twin structure, which should appear at the tension of the smectic layer, is proposed.

Study of the 4He crystal surface

The evolution of the meniscus of a helium crystal near the (0001) face is traced during a change in the boundary conditions at the chamber wall in the temperature range 0.5-0.9 K. The critical behavior of the contact angle is studied. An anisotropy is detected in the crystal-glass interface energy. New data on the temperature dependence of the elementary-step energy are obtained.

Preparation of facilities for fundamental research with ultracold neutrons at PNPI

The WWR-M reactor of PNPI offers a unique opportunity to prepare a source for ultracold neutrons (UCN) in an environment of high neutron flux (about 3*10^12 n/cm^2/s) at still acceptable radiation heat release (about 4*10^-3 W/g). It can be realized within the reactor thermal column situated close to the reactor core. With its large diameter of 1 m, this channel allows to install a 15 cm thick bismuth shielding, a graphite premoderator (300 dm^3 at 20 K), and a superfluid helium converter (35 dm^3). At a temperature of 1.2 K it is possible to remove the heat release power of about 20 W. Using the 4pi flux of cold neutrons within the reactor column can bring more than a factor 100 of cold neutron flux incident on the superfluid helium with respect to the present cold neutron beam conditions at the ILL reactor. The storage lifetime for UCN in superfluid He at 1.2 K is about 30 s, which is sufficient when feeding experiments requiring a similar filling time. The calculated density of UCN with energy between 50 neV and 250 neV in an experimental volume of 40 liters is about 10^4 n/cm^3. Technical solutions for realization of the project are discussed.

A plastic flow theory for amorphous materials

Starting from known kinematic picture for plasticity, we derive a set of dynamical equations describing plastic flow in a Lagrangian formulation. Our derivation is a natural and a straightforward extension of simple fluids, elastic and viscous solids theories. These equations contain the Maxwell model as a special limit. We discuss some results of plasticity which can be described by this set of equations. We exploit the model equations for the simple examples: straining of a slab and a rod. We find that necking manifests always itself (not as a result of instability), except if the very special constant-velocity stretching process is imposed.

Influence of Strain on the Kinetics of Phase Transitions in Solids

We consider a sharp interface kinetic model of phase transitions accompanied by elastic strain, together with its phase-field realization. Quantitative results for the steady-state growth of a new phase in a strip geometry are obtained and different pattern formation processes in this system are investigated.

Elastic domains in antiferromagnets

We consider periodic domain structures which appear due to the magnetoelastic interaction if the antiferromagnetic crystal is attached to an elastic substrate. The peculiar behavior of such structures in an external magnetic field is discussed. In particular, we find the magnetic field dependence of the equilibrium period and the concentrations of different domains.

High-Field Low-Frequency Spin Dynamics

The theory of exchange symmetry of spin ordered states is extended to the case of high magnetic field. Low frequency spin dynamics equation for quasi-goldstone mode is derived for two cases of collinear and noncollinear antiferromagnets.

Fracture and Friction: Stick-Slip Motion

We discuss the stick-slip motion of an elastic block sliding along a rigid substrate. We argue that for a given external shear stress this system shows a discontinuous nonequilibrium transition from a uniform stick state to uniform sliding at some critical stress which is nothing but the Griffith threshold for crack propagation. An inhomogeneous mode of sliding occurs, when the driving velocity is prescribed instead of the external stress. A transition to homogeneous sliding occurs at a critical velocity, which is related to the critical stress. We solve the elastic problem for a steady-state motion of a periodic stick-slip pattern and derive equations of motion for the tip and resticking end of the slip pulses. In the slip regions we use the linear viscous friction law and do not assume any intrinsic instabilities even at small sliding velocities. We find that, as in many other pattern forming system, the steady-state analysis itself does not select uniquely all the internal parameters of the pattern, especially the primary wavelength. Using some plausible analogy to first order phase transitions we discuss a ``soft'' selection mechanism. This allows to estimate internal parameters such as crack velocities, primary wavelength and relative fraction of the slip phase as function of the driving velocity. The relevance of our results to recent experiments is discussed.

Frictional shear cracks

We discuss crack propagation along the interface between two dissimilar materials. The crack edge separates two states of the interface, ``stick'' and ``slip''. In the slip region we assume that the shear stress is proportional to the sliding velocity, i.e. the linear viscous friction law. In this picture the static friction appears as the Griffith threshold for crack propagation. We calculate the crack velocity as a function of the applied shear stress and find that the main dissipation comes from the macroscopic region and is mainly due to the friction at the interface. The relevance of our results to recent experiments, Baumberger et al, Phys. Rev. Lett. 88, 075509 (2002), is discussed.

The magnetic ordering in the mixed valence compound beta-Na0.33V2O5

The low-temperature electron spin resonance (ESR) spectra and the static magnetization data obtained for the stoichiometric single crystals of $β$-Na$_{0.33}$V$_2$O$_5$ indicate that this quasi-one-dimensional mixed valence (V4+/V5+) compound demonstrates at $T_N=22$ K the phase transition into the canted antiferromagnetically ordered state. The spontaneous magnetization of $3.4\times 10^{-3}$ $μ_B$ per V$^{4+}$ ion was found to be oriented along the two-fold $b$ axis of the monoclinic structure, the vector of antiferromagnetism is aligned with the $a$ axis and the Dzyaloshinsky vector is parallel to the $c$-axis. The experimental data were successfully described in the frame of the macroscopic spin dynamics and the following values for the macroscopic parameters of the spin system were obtained: the Dzyaloshinsky field $H_D=6$ kOe, the energy gaps of two branches of the spin wave spectrum $Δ_1=48$ GHz and $Δ_2=24$ GHz.

Metastability of life

The physical idea of the natural origin of diseases and deaths has been presented. The fundamental microscopical reason is the destruction of any metastable state by thermal activation of a nucleus of a nonreversable change. On the basis of this idea the quantitative theory of age dependence of death probability has been constructed. The obtained simple Death Laws are very accurately fulfilled almost for all known diseases.
