Photometric and Spectral Evolution of the Symbiotic Nova HM Sagittae since 2003

We present photometric and spectral monitoring of the symbiotic system HM Sge, which consists of a Mira variable with a dust shell and a hot white dwarf ionizing the surrounding gaseous nebula. The system underwent a nova-like outburst in 1975 and experienced a high-activity episode during 2018-2021. UBV photometry from 2003 to 2025 shows monotonic fading at about 0.05 mag/yr until 2018, followed by a 0.3 mag brightening peaking in 2021 and a decline by 2025 to the faintest level in five decades of monitoring. Near-infrared observations (JHKLM, 2009-2025), combined with archival data, reveal Mira pulsations with a period of 532 d and long-term variability driven by changes in the optical depth of the dust shell. Spectral monitoring (2016-2025) reveals a substantial evolution in the emission spectrum of the gaseous envelope. The 2018-2021 high-activity episode was accompanied by enhanced fluxes in recombination lines (H I, He I, He II) and forbidden transitions ([O I], [Ar V], [Fe VI], [Ca VII]), together with a 17-fold brightening of the Raman-scattered O VI $λ$6725 line. We report the first detection of the [Fe X] $λ$6374 line in HM Sge. Monitoring this line from 2007 to 2025 shows its equivalent width growing through 2017 - indicating gradual coronal heating - then declining by 2021, likely reflecting altered accretion conditions and/or hot-component properties during the high-activity episode. We propose that both the 1975 outburst and the 2018-2021 high-activity episode may be linked to periastron passage of the binary components; if so, the about 46-year interval would constrain the system's orbital period.

IRAS 22272+5435 (V354 Lac): Multicolor Photometry of a Variable Carbon-rich post-AGB Star and a Dust Formation Episode

We present new UBV photometric observations (2009-2024) of the carbon-rich post-AGB star IRAS 22272+5435 (V354 Lac), combined with our data spanning over 30 years (1991-2024). The star shows pulsations with two closely spaced periods, 127 and 132 d, which cause brightness variations of variable amplitude. We also detect low-amplitude oscillations with a 661-day period, of uncertain origin. Color analysis reveals both temperature variations during pulsations and spectral anomalies. For the first time, we analyze long-term JHKLM photometry (1994-2024), showing increased KLM-band brightness from 1996 to 2004 - likely due to dust emission following a sudden mass ejection. The absence of strong optical variability suggests either a large angle between the ejection direction and the line of sight or a low optical depth of the ejected material. We discuss possible mechanisms and observational signatures of this dust-formation event.

Recurrent Symbiotic Nova T Coronae Borealis Before Outburst

The results of photometric and spectral observations of T CrB obtained in a wide range of wavelengths in 2011-2023 are presented. We use the near-IR light curves to determine a new ephemeris $JD_{min} = 2455828.9 + 227.55 \times E$ for the times of light minima when the red giant is located between the observer and the hot component. The flux ratio H$α$/H$β$ varied from $\sim 3$ to $\sim 8$ in 2020-2023, which may be due to a change in the flux ratio between the X-ray and optical ranges. It is shown that the value of H$α$/H$β$ anticorrelates with the rate of accretion onto the hot component of the system. Based on high-speed follow-up observations obtained on June 8, 2023, we detected a variability of the HeII $λ4686$ line with a characteristic time-scale of $\sim 25$ min, the amplitude of variability in the $B$-band was $\sim 0.07^m$. Simulations of the near-IR light curves accounting for the ellipsoidal effect allowed us to obtain the parameters of the binary system: the Roche lobe filling factor of the cool component $μ=1.0$, the mass ratio $q=M_{cool}/M_{hot} \in [0.5, 0.77]$, the orbital inclination $i \in [55^\circ, 63^\circ]$. A comparison of the light curve obtained in 2005-2023 with the 1946 outburst template made it possible to predict the date of the upcoming outburst - January 2024.

FG Sge: new multicolor photometry and short-term dust shell clearing in 2019

We present the results of a new stage of the long-term photometric study of FG Sge which is a quickly evolving central star of the planetary nebula Hen 1-5. Our new observations carried out on the SAI MSU telescopes in the optical ($BVR_CI_C$) and infrared (IR) ($JHKLM$) regions in 2008-2021 and 2013-2021, respectively, allowed us to trace the evolution of the star's brightness in recent years. The most significant observations were performed in 2019 when the star suffered a short clearing of the dust shell and became visible in $BVR_C$. Based on the spectral energy distribution of FG Sge in the 0.4-5 $μ$m wavelength range we derived the dust shell parameters: the size of dust grains $a=0.01μ$m, the inner radius temperature $T_{\text{dust}}=900$ K, optical depth $τ(K)=0.5$ ($τ(V)=4.5$), the total mass of dust $M_{\text{dust}}=7\cdot10^{-5} M_{\odot}$. After the short-term clearing of the dust shell in 2019, another dust structure was ejected that resulted in the star fading in all the observed bands. Based on the IR brightness and color curves, we estimated the dust depth growth in 2019-2020.

The path to Z And-type outbursts: The case of V426 Sagittae (HBHA 1704-05)

The star V426 Sge (HBHA~1704-05), originally classified as an emission-line object and a semi-regular variable, brightened at the beginning of August 2018, showing signatures of a symbiotic star outburst. We aim to confirm the nature of V426 Sge as a classical symbiotic star, determine the photometric ephemeris of the light minima, and suggest the path from its 1968 symbiotic nova outburst to the following 2018 Z And-type outburst. We re-constructed an historical light curve (LC) of V426 Sge from approximately the year 1900, and used original low- and high-resolution spectroscopy complemented with Swift-XRT and UVOT, optical UBVRcIc and near-infrared JHKL photometry obtained during the 2018 outburst and the following quiescence. The historical LC reveals no symbiotic-like activity from 1900 to 1967. In 1968, V426 Sge experienced a symbiotic nova outburst that ceased around 1990. From approximately 1972, a wave-like orbitally related variation with a period of $493.4\pm 0.7$ days developed in the LC. This was interrupted by a Z And-type outburst from the beginning of August 2018 to the middle of February 2019. At the maximum of the 2018 outburst, the burning white dwarf (WD) increased its temperature to $>2\times 10^5$ K, generated a luminosity of $\sim 7\times 10^{37}(d/3.3kpc)^2$ erg/s, and blew a wind at the rate of $\sim 3\times 10^{-6}$ M$_{\odot}$/yr. The donor is a normal M4-5 III giant and the accretor is a low-mass $\sim$0.5 M$_{\odot}$ WD. During the transition from the symbiotic nova outburst to the quiescent phase, a pronounced sinusoidal variation along the orbit develops in the LC of most symbiotic novae. The following eventual outburst is of Z And-type, when the accretion by the WD temporarily exceeds the upper limit of the stable burning. At this point the system becomes a classical symbiotic star.

Surprising Variability of the Planetary Nebula IC 4997 = QV Sge

We present the results of a new epoch of a long-term photometric monitoring of the variable planetary nebula IC~4997. The integral $UBV$ light curves display a continuing brightening of 0.$^{m}15$ in $V$, a slight rise (<0.$^{m}1$) in $B$, and constancy in $U$. The $B-V$ color has got redder from 0.$^{m}4$ in 2000 to 0.$^{m}7$ in 2019, whereas the $U-B$ color has not changed significantly. New $JHKL$ photometry was obtained in 2019. We found the source to be fainter by 0.$^{m}4$ in $L$ and bluer by 0.$^{m}2$ in the $K-L$ color if compared to the data of 1999-2006. The long-term brightness variations are due mostly to the changing input of emission lines to the integral light. Low-dispersion spectroscopic observations carried out in 2010-2019 revealed a continuing decrease in the $\lambda4363/\lambda4340$ ratio: it decreased by a factor of $\sim3$ in 30 years and reached the level of 1960-1970. The absolute intensities of [OIII] nebualr lines increased by a factor of $>2$ from 1990 to 2019, whereas the [OIII] $λ$4363 line had weakened by a factor of 2 comparing to the maximum value observed in 2000. The variation of H$β$ absolute intensity in 1960-2019 was shown to be similar to that of [OIII] nebular lines, but of smaller amplitude. The electron density in the outer part of the nebula was estimated from the [SII] and [ClIII] lines. Basing on the data on absolute intensities we propose a possible scenario describing the change of $N_e,T_e$ in 1970-2019. The spectral variability of IC~4997 could be explained by a variation of electron temperature in the nebula caused by not so much the change in ionizing flux from the central star as the variable stellar wind and related processes. The photometric and spectral changes observed for IC~4997 in 1960-2019 may be interpreted as an observable consequence of a single episode of enhanced mass loss from the variable central star.

ALMA monitoring of mm line variation in IRC+10216: I. Overview of millimeter variability

Temporal variation of millimeter lines is a new direction of research for evolved stars. It has the potential to probe the dynamical wind launching processes from time dimension. We report here the first ALMA (Atacama Large Millimeter Array) results that cover 817 days of an on-going monitoring of 1.1 mm lines in the archetypal carbon star IRC +10216. The monitoring is done with the compact 7-m array (ACA) and in infrared with a 1.25 m telescope in Crimea. A high sensitivity of the cumulative spectra covering a total of ~7.2 GHz between 250 - 270 GHz range has allowed us to detect about 148 known transitions of 20 molecules, together with more of their isotopologues, and 81 unidentified lines. An overview of the variabilities of all detected line features are presented in spectral plots. Although a handful of lines are found to be very possibly stable in time, most other lines are varying either roughly in phase or in anti-correlation with the near-infrared light. Several lines have their variations in the ALMA data coincident with existing single dish monitoring results, while several others do not, which requires an yet unknown mechanism in the circumstellar envelop to explain.

The Relative Wavelength Independence of IR Time Lags in NGC4151 During the Years 2010-2015

We present results of a study of the correlation between the infrared (JHKL) and optical(B) fluxes of the nucleus of the Seyfert galaxy NGC 4151 for the years 2010 - 2015 using our own data (partially published) in combination with published data of Roberts and Rumstey (2012), Guo et al. (2014) and Schnulle et al. (2013, 2015).We find similar lags for each of the HKL passbands relative to the optical of 37 +-3 days. The lags are the same to within the accuracy of measurement. We do not confirm a significant decrease in the lag for HKL in 2013-2014 previously reported by Schnulle et al. (2015), but we find that the lag of the short-lag component of J increased. We discuss our results within the framework of the standard model, where the variable infrared radiation is mainly due to the thermal re-emission of short-wave radiation by dust clouds close to a variable central source. There is also some contribution to the IR emission from the accretion disk, and this contribution increases with decreasing wavelength. The variability in J and K is not entirely simultaneous, which may be due to the differing contributions of the radiation from the accretion disk in these bands. The absence of strong wavelength-dependent changes in infrared lag across the HKL passbands can be explained by having the dust clouds during 2010-2015 be located beyond the sublimation radius. The relative wavelength independence of the infrared lags is also consistent with the hollow bi-conical outflow model of Oknyansky et al. (2015).

Cool spots on the surface of the active giant PZ Mon

Based on the multiband (BVRIJHKL) photometric observations of the active red giant PZ Mon performed for the first time in the winter season of 2017-2018, we have determined the main characteristics of the spotted stellar surface in a parametric three-spot model. The unspotted surface temperature is Teff=4730 K, the temperature of the cool spots is Tspot=3500 K, their relative area is about 41%, and the temperature of the warm spots is Twarm=4500 K with a maximum relative area up to 20%. The distribution of spots over the stellar surface has been modeled. The warm spots have been found to be distributed at various longitudes in the hemisphere on the side of the secondary component and are most likely a result of its influence.

Dynamics of wind and the dusty environments in the accreting T Tauri stars RY Tau and SU Aur

Classical T Tauri stars with ages of less than 10 Myr possess accretion discs. Magnetohydrodynamic processes at the boundary between the disc and the stellar magnetosphere control the accretion and ejections gas flows. We carried out a long series of simultaneous spectroscopic and photometric observations of the classical T Tauri stars RY Tau and SU Aur with the aim to quantify the accretion and outflow dynamics at time scales from days to years. It is shown that dust in the disc wind is the main source of photometric variability of these stars. In RY Tau we observed a new effect: during events of enhanced outflow the circumstellar extinction gets lower. The characteristic time of changes in outflow velocity and stellar brightness indicates that the obscuring dust is near the star. The outflow activity in both stars is changing on a time scale of years. Periods of quiescence in H$α$ profile variability were observed during 2015-2016 season in RY Tau and during 2016-2017 season in SU Aur. We interpret these findings in the framework of the magnetospheric accretion model, and discuss how the global stellar magnetic field may influence the long-term variations of the outflow activity.

SU Aur: A Deep Fading Event in Visible and Near-Infrared Bands

In three seasons of 2015-2018 we carried out a series of visible and near infrared (NIR) photometry of SU Aur. In course of this photometric monitoring we detected an event of a deep fading of the star in spring of 2018. In this paper we present preliminary analysis of our photometry.

Multicolor photometry and spectroscopy of the yellow supergiant with dust envelope HD 179821=V1427 Aquilae

We present the results of multicolor (UBVJHKLM) photometry (2009-2017) and low-resolution spectroscopy (2016-2017) of the semi-regular variable V1427 Aql=HD 179821, a yellow supergiant with gas-dust envelope. The star displays low-amplitude (ΔV<0.2 mag) semi-periodic brightness variation superimposed on a long-term trend. The light curve shape and timescale change from cycle to cycle. There are temperature variations characteristic for pulsations, and brightness oscillations with no significant change of color are also observed. The UBV data for the 2009-2011 interval are well reproduced by a superposition of two periodic components with P=170 d and P=141 d (or P=217 d - the one year alias of P=141 d). The variation became less regular after 2011, the timescale increased and exceeded 250 days. In 2009-2016 the annual average brightness monotonically increased in V, J, K, whereas it decreased in U and B. The annual average U-B, B-V, and J-K colors grew, the star was getting redder. The cooling and expanding of the star photosphere along with the increasing of luminosity may explain the long-term trend in brightness and colors. Based on our photometric data we suppose that the photosphere temperature decreased by ~400 K in the 2008-2016 interval, the radius increased by ~24 %, and the luminosity grew by ~19 %. Low-resolution spectra in the λ4000-9000 Å wavelength range obtained in 2016-2017 indicate significant changes in the spectrum of V1427 Aql as compared with the 1994-2008 interval, i.e. the BaII and near-infrared CaII triplet absorptions have turned stronger while the OI λ7771-4 triplet blend has weakened that points out the decrease of temperature in the region where the absorptions are formed. The evolutionary stage of the star is discussed. We also compare V1427 Aql with post-AGB stars and yellow hypergiants.

Spectroscopic and photometric observations of Symbiotic Nova PU Vul during 2009-2016

A new set of low-resolution spectral and UBVJHKL-photometric observations of the symbiotic nova PU Vul is presented. The binary has been still evolving after the symbiotic nova outburst in 1977 and now it's in the nebular stage. It is found that the third orbital cycle (after 1977) was characterized by great changes in light curves. Now PU Vul demonstrates a sine-wave shape of all light curves (with an amplitude in the U band of about 0.7 mag), which is typical for symbiotic stars in quiescent state. Brightness variability due to cool component pulsations is now clearly visible in the VRI light curves. The amplitude of the pulsations increases from 0.5 mag in V band to 0.8 mag in I band. These two types of variability, as well as a very slow change of the hot component physical parameters due to evolution after the outburst of 1979, influence the spectral energy distribution of the system. The emission lines variability is highly complex. Only hydrogen lines fluxes vary with orbital phase. An important feature of the third orbital cycle is the first appearance of the OVI, 6828A Raman scattering line. We determined the hot component temperature by means of Zanstra method applied to the He II, 4686 line. Our estimate is about 150000 K for the spectrum obtained near orbital maximum in 2014. The VO spectral index derived near pulsation minimum corresponds to M6 spectral class for the cool component of PU Vul.

Photometric and Spectroscopic Study of the Supergiant with an Infrared Excess V1027 Cygni

We present the results of our $UBV$ and $JHKLM$-photometry for the semiregular pulsating variable V1027~Cyg, a supergiant with an infrared excess, over the period from 1991 to 2015. Our search for a periodicity in the $UBV$ brightness variations has led to several periods from $P=212^{d}$ to $P=320^{d}$ in different time intervals. We have found the period $P=237^{d}$ based on our infrared photometry. The variability amplitude, the light-curve shape, and the magnitude of V1027~Cyg at maximum light change noticeably from cycle to cycle. An ambiguous correlation of the $B-V$ and $U-B$ colors with the brightness has been revealed. The spectral energy distribution for V1027~Cyg from our photometry in the range 0.36 ($U$)-5.0 ($M$) $μ$m corresponds to spectral types from G8I to K3I at different phases of the pulsation cycle. Low-resolution spectra of V1027 Cyg in the range $λ$4400--9200 Å were taken during 16 nights over the period 1995--2015. At the 1995 and 2011 photometric minima the star's spectrum exhibited molecular TiO bands whose intensity corresponded to spectral types M0--M1, while the photometric data point to a considerably earlier spectral type. We hypothesize that the TiO bands are formed in the upper layers of the extended stellar atmosphere. We have measured the equivalent widths of the strongest absorption lines, in particular, the infrared Ca~II triplet in the spectrum of V1027~Cyg. The calcium triplet (Ca T) with $W_λ(\mathrm{Ca~T})=20.3\pm1.8$ Å as a luminosity indicator for supergiants places V1027 Cyg in the region of the brightest G--K supergiants. V1027 Cyg has been identified with the infrared source IRAS~20004+2955 and is currently believed to be a candidate for post-AGB stars. The evolutionary status of the star and its difference from other post-AGB objects are discussed.

Comparison of the infrared magnitudes of the eclipsing variable star epsilon Aur during the two main luminance lows using observations from 1980 to 2015

The data of photometric measurements of the long-period eclipsing variable epsilon Aur in the two main minima 1982 and 2010 in the spectral range of 1--5 microns are presented. Noted is the similarity of light curves in eclipse, its asymmetry, and availability of the short interval increased brightness. We are detecting the phase changing of the indicator color J-M and the effect of short-time changing of the color to be more blue at the moments during the beginning and end of the eclipse.

Reverberation measurement of the inner radius of the dust torus in NGC 4151 during 2008-2013

We investigate the correlation between infrared (JHKL) and optical (B) fluxes of the variable nucleus of the Seyfert galaxy NGC 4151 using partially published data for the last 6 years (2008-2013.). Here we are using the same data as in Oknyansky et al. (2014), but include also optical (B) data from Guo et al. We find that the lag of flux in all the infrared bands is the same, 40 +- 6 days, to within the measurement accuracy. Variability in the J and K bands is not quite simultaneous, perhaps due to the differing contributions of the accretion disk in these bands. The lag found for the K band compared with the B band is not significantly different from earlier values obtained for the period 2000-2007. However, finding approximately the same lags in all IR bands for 2008-2013 differs from previous results at earlier epochs when the lag increased with increasing wavelength. Examples of almost the same lag in different IR bands are known for some other active nuclei. In the case of NGC 4151 it appears that the relative lags between the IR bands may be different in different years. The available data, unfortunately, do not allow us to investigate a possible change in the lags during the test interval. We discuss our results in the framework of the standard model where the variable infrared radiation is mainly due to thermal re-emission from the part of the dusty torus closest to the central source. There is also a contribution of some IR emission from the accretion disk, and this contribution increases with decreasing wavelength. Some cosmological applications of obtained results are discussed.

A quasi-time-dependent radiative transfer model of OH104.9+2.4

We investigate the pulsation-phase dependent properties of the circumstellar dust shell (CDS) of the OH/IR star OH104.9+2.4 based on radiative transfer modeling (RTM) using the code DUSTY. Our previous study concerning simultaneous modeling of the spectral energy distribution (SED) and near-infrared (NIR) visibilities (Riechers et al. 2004) has now been extended by means of a more detailed analysis of the pulsation-phase dependence of the model parameters of OH104.9+2.4. In order to investigate the temporal variation in the spatial structure of the CDS, additional NIR speckle interferometric observations in the K' band were carried out with the 6 m telescope of the Special Astrophysical Observatory (SAO). At a wavelength of 2.12 micron the diffraction-limited resolution of 74 mas was attained. Several key parameters of our previous best-fitting model had to be adjusted in order to be consistent with the newly extended amount of observational data. It was found that a simple rescaling of the bolometric flux F_bol is not sufficient to take the variability of the source into account, as the change in optical depth over a full pulsation cycle is rather high. On the other hand, the impact of a change in effective temperature T_eff on SED and visibility is rather small. However, observations, as well as models for other AGB stars, show the necessity of including a variation of T_eff with pulsation phase in the radiative transfer models. Therefore, our new best-fitting model accounts for these changes.

Correlation of IR and Opticical Variability in NGC4151

We combine all published NIR and optical photometrical observations of NGC 4151 as well as our new unpublished yet data which can be used for determination of time delays between optical and NIR variations. Before we have found change of time delay value for variations in K and L filters for different states of the luminosity. Here we are considering new data for deep minimum after the very high state of the nucleus. We conclude that dust recovering time after the high state is for any case more then several years.
