Nonequilibrium Quasiparticle Dynamics in a MoRe-Based Superconducting Resonator under IR Excitation

The response of a MoRe-based superconducting resonator operating near 5 K to pulsed infrared irradiation is investigated, and the underlying physical mechanisms are analyzed. The device exhibits a pronounced nonlinear response dominated by nonequilibrium quasiparticle dynamics rather than uniform thermal heating. Infrared pulses produce strong distortions of the resonance curve and a transient decrease in the resonance frequency, consistent with increased kinetic inductance caused by quasiparticle generation. The frequency shift scales approximately linearly with absorbed power, whereas the dissipation response saturates at higher powers, indicating the formation of a nonequilibrium steady-state quasiparticle population. These observations demonstrate a transition from a linear pair-breaking regime to a saturated dissipation regime, likely associated with a quasiparticle relaxation bottleneck or partial suppression of the smaller superconducting gap in MoRe. The results highlight the relevance of nonequilibrium processes in MoRe and confirm its potential for microwave kinetic-inductance detector applications.

Control of the effective value of the critical current of the RF SQUID by the high-frequency electromagnetic field

An analysis of the influence of the high-frequency electromagnetic field on the amplitude-frequency and signal characteristics of RF SQUID and experimental verification are carried out. At low parameter , the RF SQUID behavior is well described analytically by the theoretical model. In experiment, basic operation scheme is used in which the interferometer is inductively connected to a resonant tank circuit driven by RF current at a frequency close to the resonance frequency of the tank. It is shown that parameter , which distinguishes between hysteretic and non-hysteretic regimes, can be effectively adjusted to a desired value by applying the high-frequency field of a certain amplitude and frequency much higher than tank resonant frequency. A significant increase in the conversion factor and sensitivity of the RF SQUID during this adjustment is discussed.

Design of deeply cooled ultra-low dissipation amplifier and measuring cell for quantum measurements with a microwave single-photon counter

The requirements and details of designing a measuring cell and low-back-action deeply-cooled amplifier for quantum measurements at 10 mK are discussed. This equipment is a part of a microwave single-photon counter based on a superconducting flux qubit. The high electron mobility transistors (HEMTs) in the amplifier operate in unsaturated microcurrent regime and dissipate only 1 microwatt of dc power per transistor. Simulated amplifier gain is 15 dB at 450 MHz with a high-impedance (~5 kOhm signal source and standard 50-Ohm output.

Stochastic amplification of weak signals in an RF SQUID with ScS contact

The paper presents results of a numerical simulation of the stochastic dynamics of magnetic flux in an RF SQUID loop with a Josephson point (ScS) contact driven by a mix of band-limited Gaussian noise and low-frequency small-amplitude sine signal, at finite temperatures $0<T<T_{c}$. A change in the gain of the stochastically amplified weak signal with the temperature rise is shown to be due to smearing of the energy barrier between adjacent metastable current states of the loop. A comparison to an RF SQUID with a tunnel (SIS) junction is done.

Measurement of brightness temperature of two-dimensional electron gas in channel of a high electron mobility transistor at ultralow dissipation power

A technically simple and physically clear method is suggested for the direct measurement of brightness temperature of two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) in the channel of a high electron mobility transistor (HEMT). The usage of the method was demonstrated with the pseudomorphic HEMT as a specimen. The optimal HEMT dc regime, from the point of view of the "back action" problem, was found to belong to the unsaturated area of the static characteristics possibly corresponding to the ballistic electron transport mode. The proposed method is believed to be a convenient tool to explore the ballistic transport, electron diffusion, 2DEG properties and other electrophysical processes in the heterostructures.

Experimental observation of induced stochastic transitions in multi-well potential of RF SQUID loop

An amplification of a weak low-frequency harmonic signal is experimentally observed in a single-junction-superconducting quantum interferometer (RF SQUID loop) due to stochastic transitions between two or more metastable states of the loop under the applied noise flux of varying intensity (the effect of stochastic resonance, SR). In addition to the usual scenario of the SR in a bistable system with Gaussian noise, the transitions between multiple metastable states of the multi-well SQUID loop potential under the influence of a binary noise is observed. This can be interpreted as a kind of noise "spectroscopy" of the metastable states of the SQUID loop with different values of the trapped magnetic flux.

Stochastic resonance in an RF SQUID with shunted ScS junction

Using a point (superconductor-constriction-superconductor, ScS) contact in a single-Josephson-junction superconducting quantum interference device (RF SQUID) provides stochastic resonance conditions at any arbitrary small value of loop inductance and contact critical current, unlike SQUIDs with more traditional tunnel (superconductor-insulator-superconductor, SIS) junctions. This is due to the unusual potential energy of the ScS RF SQUID which always has a barrier between two wells thus making the device bistable. This paper presents the results of a numerical simulation of the stochastic dynamics of the magnetic flux in an ScS RF SQUID loop affected by band-limited white Gaussian noise and low-frequency sine signals of small and moderate amplitudes. The difference in stochastic amplification of RF SQUID loops incorporating ScS and SIS junctions is discussed.

The two Josephson junction flux qubit with large tunneling amplitude

In this paper we discuss solid-state nanoelectronic realizations of Josephson flux qubits with large tunneling amplitude between the two macroscopic states. The latter can be controlled via the height and wells form of the potential barrier, which is determined by quantum-state engineering of the flux qubit circuit. The simplest circuit of the flux qubit is a superconducting loop interrupted by a Josephson nanoscale tunnel junction. The tunneling amplitude between two macroscopically different states can be essentially increased, by engineering of the qubit circuit, if tunnel junction is replaced by a ScS contact. However, only Josephson tunnel junctions are particularly suitable for large-scale integration circuits and quantum detectors with preset-day technology. To overcome this difficulty we consider here the flux qubit with high-level energy separation between "ground" and "excited" states, which consists of a superconducting loop with two low-capacitance Josephson tunnel junctions in series. We demonstrate that for real parameters of resonant superposition between the two macroscopic states the tunneling amplitude can reach values greater than 1K. Analytical results for the tunneling amplitude obtained within semiclassical approximation by instanton technique show good correlation with a numerical solution.

A tunable coupler with ScS quantum point contact to mediate strong interaction between flux qubits

In this paper we propose a kind of quantum inductance couplers (QUINC) which represents a superconducting loop closed by ScS quantum point contact, operating in deep quantum low-temperature regime to provide tunable (Ising-type) ZZ interaction between flux qubits. This coupler is shown to be well tunable by an external control magnetic flux and to provide large inter-qubit interaction energies $|J/k_{\rm B}|\simeq1$ K thus being very promising as a qubit-coupling device in a quantum register as well as for studying fundamental low-temperature quantum phenomena. Some entanglement measures of a two-qubit system are analyzed as functions of inter-qubit interaction strength.

Quantum superposition of three macroscopic states and superconducting qutrit detector

Superconducting quantum coherent circuits have opened up a novel area of fundamental low-temperature science since they could potentially be the element base for future quantum computers. Here we report a quasi-three-level coherent system, the so-called superconducting qutrit, which has some advantages over a two-level information cell (qubit), and is based on the qutrit readout circuit intended to measure individually the states of each qubit in a quantum computer. The designed and implemented radio-frequency superconducting qutrit detector (rf SQUTRID) with atomic-size ScS-type contact utilizes the coherent-state superposition in the three-well potential with energy splitting Delta E_01/k_B=1.5 K at the 30th quantized energy level with good isolation from the electromagnetic environment. The reason why large values of Delta E_01 (and thus using atomic-size Nb-Nb contact) are required is to ensure an adiabatic limit for the quantum dynamics of magnetic flux in the rf SQUTRID.

Coherent Rabi response of a charge-phase qubit under microwave irradiation

We report on radio-frequency measurements of the charge-phase qubit being under continuous microwave irradiation in the state of weak coupling to a radio-frequency tank circuit. We studied the rf impedance dependence on the two important parameters such as power of microwave irradiation whose frequency is close to the gap between the two lowest qubit energy levels, and temperature of the internal heat bath. We have found that backaction effects of the qubit on the rf tank, and vice versa, tank on the qubit, lead to a negative as well as a positive real part of the qubit impedance Re$Z(ω)$ seen by the tank. We have implemented noise spectroscopy measurements for direct impedance readout at the extreme points corresponding to maximum voltage response and obtained absolute values of about 0.017 $Ω$ for the negative and positive Re$Z(ω)$. Our results demonstrate the existence and persistence of the coherent single- and multi-photon Rabi dynamics of the qubit with both negative and positive dynamic resistance inserted into the tank in the temperature range of 10 to 200 mK.

Multiphoton transitions between energy levels in a phase-biased Cooper-pair box

We investigated both theoretically and experimentally dynamic features of a phase-biased charge qubit consisting of a single-Cooper-pair transistor closed by a superconducting loop. The effective inductance of the qubit was probed by a high-quality tank circuit. In the presence of a microwave power, with a frequency of the order of the qubit energy level separation, an alteration of the qubit inductance was observed. We demonstrate that this effect is caused by the redistribution of the qubit level population. The excitation of the qubit by one-, two-, and three-photon processes was detected. Quantitative agreement between theory and experimental data was found.

Reading-out the state inductively and microwave spectroscopy of an interferometer-type charge qubit

We implemented experimentally an interferometer-type charge qubit consisting of a single-Cooper-pair transistor closed by a superconducting loop that is in flip-chip configuration inductively coupled to a radio frequency tank circuit. The tank permits to readout the qubit state, acting as inductance measuring apparatus. By applying continuous microwave power to the quantum device, we observed inductance alterations caused by redistributions of the energy level populations. From the measured data, we extracted the energy gap between ground and upper levels as a function of the transistor quasicharge as well as the Josephson phase across both junctions.

Low-frequency measurement of the tunneling amplitude in a flux qubit

We have observed signatures of resonant tunneling in an Al three-junction qubit, inductively coupled to a Nb LC tank circuit. The resonant properties of the tank oscillator are sensitive to the effective susceptibility (or inductance) of the qubit, which changes drastically as its flux states pass through degeneracy. The tunneling amplitude is estimated from the data. We find good agreement with the theoretical predictions in the regime of their validity.
