Dissipative light field as a way to create strongly localized structures for atom lithography

Generally, the conditions for deep sub-Doppler laser cooling do not match the conditions for the strong atomic localization that takes a place in deeper optical potential and, in consequence, leads to larger temperature. Moreover, for a given detuning in a deep optical potential the secular approximation which is usually used for quantum description of laser cooling becomes no more valid. Here we perform an analysis of atomic localization in optical potential based on a full quantum approach for atomic density matrix. We also show that the laser cooling in a deep far-off detuned optical potential, created by a light field with a polarization gradient, can be used as an alternative method for forming high contrast spatially localized structures of atoms for the purposes of atom lithography and atomic nanofabrication. Finally, we perform an analysis of the possible limits for the width and the contrast of localized atomic structures that can in principle be reached by this type of the light mask.

CPT-like states in an ensemble of interacting fermions. On the possibility of new mechanism of superconductivity

Using the standard Hamiltonian of the BCS theory, we show that in an ensemble of interacting fermions there exists a coherent state $|NC>$, which nullifies the Hamiltonian of the interparticle interaction. This state has an analogy with the well-known in quantum optics coherent population trapping effect (CPT). A possible application of such CPT-like states in the superconductivity theory is discussed.

Features of Magneto-Optical Resonances in an Elliptically Polarized Traveling Light Wave

The parameters of nonlinear absorption magneto-optical resonances in the Hanle configuration have been studied as functions of the ellipticity of a traveling light wave. It has been found that these parameters (amplitude, width, and amplitude-to-width ratio) depend strongly on the polarization of the light wave. In particular, the resonance amplitude can increase by more than an order of magnitude when the polarization changes from linear to optimal elliptic. It has been shown that this effect is associated with the Doppler frequency shift for atoms in a gas. The theoretical results have been corroborated in experiments in Rb vapor.

Optical Lattice Polarization Effects on Hyperpolarizability of Atomic Clock Transitions

The light-induced frequency shift due to the hyperpolarizability (i.e. terms of second-order in intensity) is studied for a forbidden optical transition, $J$=0$\to$$J$=0. A simple universal dependence on the field ellipticity is obtained. This result allows minimization of the second-order light shift with respect to the field polarization for optical lattices operating at a magic wavelength (at which the first-order shift vanishes). We show the possibility for the existence of a magic elliptical polarization, for which the second-order frequency shift vanishes. The optimal polarization of the lattice field can be either linear, circular or magic elliptical. The obtained results could improve the accuracy of lattice-based atomic clocks.

Experimental Investigation of the Dark Pseudoresonance on the D1 Line of the 87Rb Atom Excited by a Linearly Polarized Field

The measurements of the metrological characteristics (amplitude, width, and shift in the magnetic field) of the dark pseudoresonance, which was proposed by Kazakov et al. [quant-ph/0506167] as the reference resonance for an atomic frequency standard, are reported. It has been shown that the characteristics of the pseudoresonance are worse than those of the unsplit electromagnetically induced transparency resonance for the excitation scheme with the lin||lin polarization on the D1 line of the 87Rb atom.

Experimental preparation of pure superposition states of atoms via elliptically polarized bichromatic radiation

We propose a simple and effective way of creating pure dark superposition states. The generation of pure states is carried out by using bichromatic radiation with controllable polarization ellipticity. We derived analytic formulas for polarization elipticity to obtain pure dark states of different Zeeman sublevels of alkali atoms. Experimentally we accumulated ~60% of the atoms in the 0-0 dark state of the D1 line of Rb87

Magnetic field-induced spectroscopy of forbidden optical transitions with application to lattice-based optical atomic clocks

We develop a method of spectroscopy that uses a weak static magnetic field to enable direct optical excitation of forbidden electric-dipole transitions that are otherwise prohibitively weak. The power of this scheme is demonstrated using the important application of optical atomic clocks based on neutral atoms confined to an optical lattice. The simple experimental implementation of this method -- a single clock laser combined with a DC magnetic field-- relaxes stringent requirements in current lattice-based clocks (e.g., magnetic field shielding and light polarization), and could therefore expedite the realization of the extraordinary performance level predicted for these clocks. We estimate that a clock using alkaline earth-like atoms such as Yb could achieve a fractional frequency uncertainty of well below 10^-17 for the metrologically preferred even isotopes.

On the unique possibility to increase significantly the contrast of dark resonances on D1 line of $^{87}$Rb

We propose and study, theoretically and experimentally, a new scheme of excitation of a coherent population trapping resonance for D1 line of alakli atoms with nuclear spin $I=3/2$ by bichromatic linearly polarized light ({\em lin}$||${\em lin} field) at the conditions of spectral resolution of the excited state. The unique properties of this scheme result in a high contrast of dark resonance for D1 line of $^{87}$Rb.

Coherent population trapping in quantized light field

A full quantum treatment of coherent population trapping (CPT) is given for a system of resonantly coupled atoms and electromagnetic field. We develop a regular analytical method of the construction of generalized dark states (GDS). It turns out that GDS do exist for all optical transitions $F_g\to F_e$, including bright transitions $F\to F+1$ and $F''\to F''$ with $F''$ a half-integer, for which the CPT effect is absent in a classical field. We propose an idea to use an optically thick medium with a transition $F''\to F''$ with $F'' \ge 3/2$ a half-integer as a ''quantum filter'', which transmits only a quantum light.

Pure superposition states of atoms generated by a bichromatic elliptically polarized filed

We find specific polarizations of components of a bichromatic field, which allow one to prepare pure superposition states of atoms, using the coherent population trapping effect. These $m$$-$$m$ states are prepared in the system of Zeeman substates of the ground-state hyperfine levels with arbitrary angular momenta $F_1$ and $F_2$. It is established that, in general case $m\ne 0$, the use of waves with elliptical polarizations ($ε_1$$\perp$$ε_2$ field configuration for alkali metal atoms) is necessary for the pure state preparation. We analytically show an unique advantage of the D1 line of alkali metal atoms, which consists in the possibility to generate pure $m$$-$$m$ states even in the absence of spectral resolution of the excited-state hyperfine levels, contrary to the D2 line.

On the stability of optical lattices

In this article, we present an analysis of the stability of optical lattices. Starting with the study of an unstable optical lattice, we establish a necessary and sufficient condition for intrinsic phase stability, and discuss two practical solutions to fulfill this condition, namely minimal and folded optical lattices. We then present a particular example of two-dimensional folded optical lattice which has the advantage of being symmetric, power recycling and having a convenient geometry. We have used this lattice for laser collimation of a continuous cesium beam in a fountain geometry.

Steady state of atoms in a resonant field with elliptical polarization

We present a complete set of analytical and invariant expressions for the steady-state density matrix of atoms in a resonant radiation field with arbitrary intensity and polarization. The field drives the closed dipole transition with arbitrary values of the angular momenta $J_{g}$ and $J_{e}$ of the ground and excited state. The steady-state density matrix is expressed in terms of spherical harmonics of a complex direction given by the field polarization vector. The generalization to the case of broad-band radiation is given. We indicate various applications of these results.

Two-dimensional sideband Raman cooling and Zeeman state preparation in an optical lattice

A method of sideband Raman cooling to the vibrational ground state of the $m=0$ Zeeman sublevel in a far-detuned two-dimensional optical lattice is proposed. In our scheme, the Raman coupling between vibrational manifolds of the adjacent Zeeman sublevels is shifted to the red sideband due to the ac Stark effect induced by a weak pump field. Thus, cooling and optical pumping to $m=0$ is achieved by purely optical means with coplanar cw laser beams. The optical lattice and cooling parameters are estimated in the framework of simple theoretical models. An application of the transverse sideband cooling method to frequency standards is discussed. Coherent population trapping for the sideband Raman transitions between the degenerate vibrational levels is predicted.

Four-state N-atom as a simple theoretical model for electromagnetically induced absorption

A simple theoretical model describing the positive sign of subnatural-width absorption resonances in the recent experiment of Akulshin and co-workers (Phys. Rev. A, {\bf 57}, 2996 (1998)) is proposed. An analytical expression for the linear response to the weak probe field is found in the low-saturation limit with respect to the control field. It is shown that the positive sign of subnatural resonance is caused by the spontaneous transfer of the light-induced coherence from the excited level to the ground one.

One and two dimensional Bose-Einstein condensation of atoms in dark magneto-optical lattices

The motion of atoms in a dark magneto-optical lattice is considered. This lattice is formed by a non-uniformly polarized laser field in the presence of a static magnetic field. Cold atoms are localized in the vicinity of points where dark states are not destroyed by a magnetic field. As a result the optical interaction tends to zero (dark or gray lattices). Depending on the field configuration such a lattice can exhibit one or two-dimensional periodicity. It is shown that in 1D and 2D dark magneto-optical lattices the effects connected with the Bose-statistics of particles can be observed under the temperature $10^{-5}-10^{-6}K$ and densities $10^{11}-10^{12} cm^{-3}$, those are usual for current experiments on laser cooling.
