Topological Coherent Modes in Trapped Bose Gas

The report reviews the problem of topological coherent modes, which are nonlinear collective states of Bose-condensed atoms. Such modes can be generated by means of alternating external fields, whose frequencies are in resonance with the transition frequencies between the related modes. The Bose gas with generated topological coherent modes is a collective nonlinear analog of a resonant atom. Such systems exhibit a variety of nontrivial effects, e.g.: interference fringes, interference current, mode locking, dynamic transitions, critical phenomena, chaotic motion, harmonic generation, parametric conversion, atomic squeezing, and entanglement production.

Nonlinear spin relaxation in strongly nonequilibrium magnets

A general theory is developed for describing the nonlinear relaxation of spin systems from a strongly nonequilibrium initial state, when, in addition, the sample is coupled to a resonator. Such processes are characterized by nonlinear stochastic differential equations. This makes these strongly nonequilibrium processes principally different from the spin relaxation close to an equilibrium state, which is represented by linear differential equations. The consideration is based on a realistic microscopic Hamiltonian including the Zeeman terms, dipole interactions, exchange interactions, and a single-site anisotropy. The influence of cross correlations between several spin species is investigated. The critically important function of coupling between the spin system and a resonant electric circuit is emphasized. The role of all main relaxation rates is analyzed. The phenomenon of self-organization of transition coherence in spin motion, from the quantum chaotic stage of incoherent fluctuations, is thoroughly described. Local spin fluctuations are found to be the triggering cause for starting the spin relaxation from an incoherent nonequilibrium state. The basic regimes of collective coherent spin relaxation are studied.

Spin superradiance versus atomic superradiance

A comparative analysis is given of spin superradiance and atomic superradiance. Their similarities and distinctions are emphasized. It is shown that, despite a close analogy, these phenomena are fundamentally different. In atomic systems, superradiance is a self-organized process, in which both the initial cause, being spontaneous emission, as well as the collectivizing mechanism of their interactions through the common radiation field, are of the same physical nature. Contrary to this, in actual spin systems with dipole interactions, the latter are the major reason for spin motion. Electromagnetic spin interactions through radiation are negligible and can never produce collective effects. The possibility of realizing superradiance in molecular magnets by coupling them to a resonant circuit is discussed.

Dynamics of Bose-Einstein Condensates in One-Dimensional Optical Lattices in the Presence of Transverse Resonances

The dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensates in the lowest energy band of a one-dimensional optical lattice is generally disturbed by the presence of transversally excited resonant states. We propose an effective one-dimensional theory which takes these resonant modes into account and derive variational equations for large-scale dynamics. Several applications of the theory are discussed and a novel type of "triple soliton" is proposed, which consists of a superposition of a wavepacket at the upper band edge and two transversally excited wavepackets which are displaced in quasi-momentum space.

Coherent radiation by molecular magnets

The possibility of coherent radiation by molecular magnets is investigated. It is shown that to realize the coherent radiation, it is necessary to couple the considered sample to a resonant electric circuit. A theory for describing this phenomenon is developed, based on a realistic microscopic Hamiltonian, including the Zeeman terms, single-site anisotropy, and dipole interactions. The role of hyperfine interactions between molecular and nuclear spins is studied. Numerical solutions of the spin evolution equations are presented.

Absence of spin superradiance in resonatorless magnets

A spin system is considered with a Hamiltonian typical of molecular magnets, having dipole-dipole interactions and a single-site magnetic anisotropy. In addition, spin interactions through the common radiation field are included. A fully quantum-mechanical derivation of the collective radiation rate is presented. An effective narrowing of the dipole-dipole attenuation, due to high spin polarization is taken into account. The influence of the radiation rate on spin dynamics is carefully analysed. It is shown that this influence is completely negligible. No noticeable collective effects, such as superradiance, can appear in molecular magnets, being caused by electromagnetic spin radiation. Spin superradiance can arise in molecular magnets only when these are coupled to a resonant electric circuit, as has been suggested earlier by one of the authors in Laser Phys. {\bf 12}, 1089 (2002).

Number-of-particle fluctuations in systems with Bose-Einstein condensate

Fluctuations of the number of particles for the dilute interacting gas with Bose-Einstein condensate are considered. It is shown that in the Bogolubov theory these fluctuations are normal. The fluctuations of condensed as well as noncondensed particles are also normal both in canonical and grand canonical ensembles.

Dynamics of Nonground-State Bose-Einstein Condensates

Dilute Bose gases, cooled down to low temperatures below the Bose-Einstein condensation temperature, form coherent ensembles described by the Gross-Pitaevskii equation. Stationary solutions to the latter are topological coherent modes. The ground state, corresponding to the lowest energy level, defines the standard Bose-Einstein condensate, while the states with higher energy levels represent nonground-state condensates. The higher modes can be generated by alternating fields, whose frequencies are in resonance with the associated transition frequencies. The condensate with topological coherent modes exhibits a variety of nontrivial effects. Here it is demonstrated that the dynamical transition between the mode-locked and mode-unlocked regimes is accompanied by noticeable changes in the evolutional entanglement production.

Mesoscopic Phase Separation in Anisotropic Superconductors

General properties of anisotropic superconductors with mesoscopic phase separation are analysed. The main conclusions are as follows: Mesoscopic phase separation can be thermodynamically stable only in the presence of repulsive Coulomb interactions. Phase separation enables the appearance of superconductivity in a heterophase sample even if it were impossible in pure-phase matter. Phase separation is crucial for the occurrence of superconductivity in bad conductors. Critical temperature for a mixture of pairing symmetries is higher than the critical temperature related to any pure gap-wave symmetry of this mixture. In bad conductors, the critical temperature as a function of the superconductivity fraction has a bell shape. Phase separation makes the single-particle energy dispersion softer. For planar structures phase separation suppresses d-wave superconductivity and enhances s-wave superconductivity. These features are in agreement with experiments for cuprates.

Atomic Squeezing under Collective Emission

Atomic squeezing is studied for the case of large systems of radiating atoms, when collective effects are well developed. All temporal stages are analyzed, starting with the quantum stage of spontaneous emission, passing through the coherent stage of superradiant emission, and going to the relaxation stage ending with stationary solutions. A method of governing the temporal behaviour of the squeezing factor is suggested. The influence of a squeezed effective vacuum on the characteristics of collective emission is also investigated.

Extrapolation of power series by self-similar factor and root approximants

The problem of extrapolating the series in powers of small variables to the region of large variables is addressed. Such a problem is typical of quantum theory and statistical physics. A method of extrapolation is developed based on self-similar factor and root approximants, suggested earlier by the authors. It is shown that these approximants and their combinations can effectively extrapolate power series to the region of large variables, even up to infinity. Several examples from quantum and statistical mechanics are analysed, illustrating the approach.

Entanglement Production under Collective Radiation

The relation is studied between the entanglement production and collective radiation by an ensemble of atoms. Entanglement production is quantified by means of a general measure introduced earlier by the author. Primary emphasis is placed on the entanglement generated by pseudospin density matrices. The problem of collective atomic radiation can be described by the pseudospin evolution equations. These equations define the evolutional entanglement generated by the related density matrices. Under conditions of superradiant emission, the entanglement production exhibits sharp peaks at the delay time, where the intensity of radiation is maximal. The possibility of regulating the occurrence of such peaks by punctuated superradiance is discussed, which suggests the feasibility of {\it punctuated entanglement production}.

Principal problems in Bose-Einstein condensation of dilute gases

A survey is given of the present state of the art in studying Bose-Einstein condensation of dilute atomic gases. The bulk of attention is focused on the principal theoretical problems, though the related experiments are also mentioned. Both uniform and nonuniform trapped gases are considered. Existing theoretical contradictions are critically analysed. A correct understanding of the principal theoretical problems is necessary for gaining a more penetrating insight into experiments with trapped atoms and for their proper interpretation.

Coherent Nuclear Radiation

The main part of this review is devoted to the comprehensive description of coherent radiation by nuclear spins. The theory of nuclear spin superradiance is developed and the experimental observations of this phenomenon are considered. The intriguing problem of how coherence develops from initially incoherent quantum fluctuations is analysed. All main types of coherent radiation by nuclear spins are discussed, which are: free nuclear induction, collective induction, maser generation, pure superradiance, triggered superradiance, pulsing superradiance, punctuated superradiance, and induced emission. The influence of electron-nuclear hyperfine interactions and the role of magnetic anisotropy are studied. Conditions for realizing spin superradiance by magnetic molecules are investigated. The possibility of nuclear matter lasing, accompanied by pion or dibaryon radiation, is briefly touched.

Multiple Coupling of Topological Coherent Modes of Trapped Atoms

The possibility of generating multiple coherent modes in trapped Bose gases is advanced. This requires the usage of several driving fields whose frequencies are tuned close to the corresponding transition frequencies. A general criterion is derived explaining when the driving fields, even being in perfect resonance, cannot generate the topological coherent modes. This criterion is termed the theorem of shape conservation. Bose-Einstein condensates with generated coherent modes display a number of interesting effects, such as: interference fringes, interference current, mode locking, dynamic transition, critical phenomena, chaotic motion, harmonic generation, parametric conversion, atomic squeezing, and entanglement production. Approximate solutions, based on the averaging techniques, are found to be in good agreement with direct numerical calculations for the Gross-Pitaevskii equation.

Highly Accurate Critical Exponents from Self-Similar Variational Perturbation Theory

We extend field theoretic variational perturbation theory by self-similar approximation theory, which greatly accelerates convergence. This is illustrated by re-calculating the critical exponents of O(N)-symmetric $\vp^4$ theory. From only three-loop perturbation expansions in $4- ε$ dimensions we obtain {\em analytic results for the exponents, with practically the same accuracy as those derived recently from ordinary field-theoretic variational perturbational theory to seventh order. In particular, the theory explains the best-measured exponent $\al\approx-0.0127$ of the specific heat peak in superfluid helium, found in a satellite experiment with a temperature resolution of nanoKelvin. In addition, our analytic expressions reproduce also the exactly known large-N behaviour of the exponents $ ν$ and $ γ= ν(2- η) $ with high precision.
