Confining fields in lattice SU(2)

We review some difficulties of the standard picture of confining fields which are viewed usually as `mild', or quasiclassical field configurations. The paradoxes are naturally resolved by recent lattice observations of selftuned fluctuations which exhibit both ultraviolet and infrared scales. The ultraviolet scale is provided by the lattice spacing and is manifested in the non-Abelian action density associated with the fluctuations while the physical scale is exhibited by their geometrical characteristics. The data might suggest existence of a dual description of Yang-Mills theories on the fundamental level.

Hints on dual variables from the lattice SU(2) gluodynamics

In many cases, topological excitations become fundamental variables in a dual formulation of the theory. Assuming this is true in case of SU(2) gluodynamics, we look for hints on the dual variables from the lattice simulations. Two-dimensional vortices, or branes with recently established properties seem to be most natural candidates. The total area of the branes scales in the physical units while the non-Abelian action is ultraviolet divergent. The branes are populated with magnetic monopoles, or tachyonic mode.

Non-perturbative match of ultraviolet renormalon

The paper is motivated by observation of a kind of branes in the vacuum state of the lattice SU(2) gluodynamics. The branes represent two-dimensional vortices whose total area scales in physical units while the non-Abelian action diverges in the ultraviolet. We consider the question whether effects of the branes can be accommodated into the continuum theory. We demonstrate that at least in case of the gluon condensate (plaquette action) and of the heavy quark potential the contribution of the branes corresponds to the ultraviolet renormalon. Thus, the vortices might represent a non-perturbative match of the ultraviolet renormalon. Such an identification constrains, in turn, properties of the branes.

Self-tuning of the P-vortices

We observe that on the currently available lattices the non-Abelian action associated with the P-vortices is ultraviolet divergent. On the other hand, the total area of the vortices scales in physical units. Since both the ultraviolet and infrared scales are manifested and there is no parameter to tune, the observed phenomenon can be called self tuning.

Interplay of Monopoles and P-Vortices

We show that P-Vortices in the confinement phase of SU(2) lattice gauge theory form one large percolating (infrared) cluster and a number of small (ultraviolet) clusters. We discuss the interrelation of clusters of monopoles in the maximal Abelian projection with clusters of P-vortices. To extract P-vortices we use both direct and indirect central projections and find qualitatively similar results.

Geometry of the monopole clusters at different scales

We present results of measurements of various geometrical characteristics of the monopole clusters in the maximally Abelian projection of SU(2) lattice gauge theory. We observe scaling for the observables tested. Short clusters correspond to random walks at small scale but have long-range correlations at the hadronic scale. On the other hand, the percolating cluster at the hadronic scale does not correspond to a random walk.

Fine tuned vortices in lattice SU(2) gluodynamics

We report measurements of the action associated with center vortices in SU(2) pure lattice gauge theory. In the lattice units the excess of the action on the plaquettes belonging to the vortex is approximately a constant, independent on the lattice spacing 'a'. Therefore the action of the center vortex is of order 'A/a^2', where 'A' is its area. Since the area 'A' is known to scale in the physical units, the measurements imply that the suppression due to the surface action is balanced, or fine tuned to the entropy factor which is to be an exponential of 'A/a^2'.

Fine Tuning in Lattice SU(2) Gluodynamics vs Continuum-Theory Constraints

Recently, it has been observed that the non-Abelian action associated with lattice monopoles and vortices is ultraviolet divergent, at least at presently available lattices. On the other hand, the total length of the monopole trajectories and area of the vortices scale in physical units. Coexistence of the two different scales, infrared and ultraviolet, for the same vacuum fluctuations represents a fine tuning. To check consistency of the newly emerging picture of non--perturbative fluctuations we consider constraints from the continuum theory on the ultraviolet behaviour of the monopoles and vortices. The constraints turn to be satisfied by the data in a highly non-trivial way. Namely, it is crucial that the monopoles populate not the whole of the four dimensional space but a two-dimensional subspace of it.

"Branes" in lattice SU(2) gluodynamics

We review lattice evidence for existence of thin vortices in the vacuum state of SU(2) gluodynamics. On the average, the non-Abelian action density per unit area is ultraviolet divergent as a^{-2} where a is the lattice spacing. At small scales, the surface looks very crumpled so that the corresponding entropy factor appears also ultraviolet divergent. The total area, however, scales in physical units. The surface is populated by monopoles which represent a tachyonic mode. The smallest value of $a$ tested is about (3 GeV)^{-1}.

Monopole clusters at short and large distances

We present measurements of various geometrical characteristics of monopole clusters in SU(2) lattice gauge theory. The maximal Abelian projection is employed and both infinite, or percolating cluster and finite clusters are considered. In particular, we observe scaling for average length of segments of the percolating cluster between self-crossings, correlators of vacuum monopole currents, angular correlation between links along trajectories. Short clusters are random walks and their spectrum in length corresponds to free particles. At the hadronic scale, on the other hand, the monopole trajectories are no longer random walks. Moreover, we argue that the data on the density of finite clusters suggest that there are long-range correlations between finite clusters which can be understood as association of the clusters with two-dimensional surfaces, whose area scales.

Defining < A^2 > in the finite volume hamiltonian formalism

It is shown how in principle for non-abelian gauge theories it is possible in the finite volume hamiltonian framework to make sense of calculating the expectation value of ||A||^2=\int d^3x(A^a_i(x))^2. Gauge invariance requires one to replace ||A||^2 by its minimum over the gauge orbit, which makes it a highly non-local quantity. We comment on the difficulty of finding a gauge invariant expression for ||A||^2_{min} analogous to that found for the abelian case, and the relation of this question to Gribov copies. We deal with these issues by implementing the hamiltonian on the so-called fundamental domain, with appropriate boundary conditions in field space, essential to correctly represent the physics of the problem.

Towards understanding structure of the monopole clusters

We consider geometrical characteristics of monopole clusters of the lattice SU(2) gluodynamics. We argue that the polymer approach to the field theory is an adequate means to describe the monopole clusters. Both finite-size and the infinite, or percolating clusters are considered. We find out that the percolation theory allows to reproduce the observed distribution of the finite-size clusters in their length and radius. Geometrical characteristics of the percolating cluster reflect, in turn, the basic properties of the ground state of a system with a gap.

Interpreting the lattice monopoles in the continuum terms

We review briefly current interpretation of the lattice monopoles, defined within the Maximal Abelian Projection, in terms of the continuum theory. We emphasize, in particular, that the lattice data, at the presently available lattices, indicate that the monopoles are associated with singular fields. This note is prompted by a recent analysis hep-lat/0211005 which is based on an implicit assumption that the fields are regular.

Geometry of percolating monopole clusters

We perform detailed measurements of the geometrical characteristics of the percolating cluster of the magnetic monopole currents in the confining phase of the lattice SU(2) gluodynamics. The Maximal Abelian projection is used to define the monopoles. The use of the geometrical language is motivated by recent observations that the full non-Abelian action associated with the monopoles corresponds to point-like particles on the currently available lattices. Scaling behavior of various quantities is observed.

Anatomy of the lattice magnetic monopoles

We study the Abelian and non-Abelian action densitynear the monopole in the maximal Abelian gauge of SU(2) lattice gauge theory. We find that the non-Abelian action density near the monopoles belonging to the percolating cluster decreases when we approach the monopole center. Our estimate of the monopole radius is R_mon ~ 0.04 fm.

Gauge Invariant Monopoles in SU(2) Gluodynamics

We introduce a gauge invariant topological definition of monopole charge in pure SU(2) gluodynamics. The non-trivial topology is provided by hedgehog configurations of the non-Abelian field strength tensor on the two-sphere surrounding the monopole. It is shown that this definition can be formulated entirely in terms of Wilson loops which makes the gauge invariance manifest. Moreover, it counts correctly the monopole charge in case of spontaneously broken gauge symmetry and of pure Abelian gauge fields.

On the fermionic signature of the lattice monopoles

We consider fermions in the field of static monopole-like configurations in the Euclidean space-time. In all the cases considered there exists an infinite number of zero modes, labeled by frequency iω. The existence of such modes is a manifestation of instability of the vacuum in the presence of the monopoles and massless fermions. In the Minkowski space the corresponding phenomenon is well known and is a cornerstone of the theory of the magnetic catalysis. Moreover, the well known zero mode of Jackiw and Rebbi corresponds to the limiting case, ω= 0. We provide arguments why the chiral condensate could be linked to the density of the monopoles in the infrared cluster. A mechanism which can naturally explain the equivalence of the critical temperatures for the deconfinement and chiral transitions, is proposed. We discuss possible implications for the phenomenology of the lattice monopoles.

Hidden Mass Hierarchy in QCD

We discuss implications of the recent measurements of the non-Abelian action density associated with the monopoles condensed in the confining phase of gluodynamics. The radius of the monopole determined in terms of the action was found to be small numerically. As far as the condensation of the monopoles is described in terms of a scalar field, a fine tuning is then implied. In other words, a hierarchy exists between the self energy of the monopole and the temperature of the confinement-deconfinement phase transition. The ratio of the two scales is no less than a factor of 10. Moreover, we argue that the hierarchy scale can well eventually extend to a few hundred GeV on the ultraviolet side. The corresponding phenomenology is discussed, mostly within the polymer picture of the monopole condensation.
