Restoring the gauge invariance in non-Abelian second-class theories

In this paper, we propose a generalization of an improved gauge unfixing formalism in order to generate gauge symmetries in the non-Abelian valued systems. This generalization displays a proper and formal reformulation of second-class systems within the phase space itself. We then present our formalism in a manifestly gauge invariant resolution of the $SU(N)$ massive Yang-Mills and $SU(2)$ Skyrme models where gauge invariant variables are derived allowing then the achievement of Dirac brackets, gauge invariant Hamiltonians and first-class Lagrangians.

Master equations governing the coupling between spin-currents and gravity

In this work we consider the Einstein-Hilbert action in the first order order formalism coupled to Dirac spinors. From the little group symmetry, we derive the corresponding Bargmann-Wigner current which is conserved but not gauge invariant. Therefore, we construct a gauge invariant version of the Bargmann-Wigner current which is not conserved but potentially observable. Because it is not conserved we split this current into fermionic and gravitational sectors and derive their broken continuity equations for each sector. These equations compose the master equations governing the interaction of spin-currents with gravity. Furthermore, we derive the corresponding master equations in the weak field approximation.

From $SL(5,\mathbb{R})$ Yang-Mills theory to induced gravity

From pure Yang-Mills action for the $SL(5,\mathbb{R})$ group in four Euclidean dimensions we obtain a gravity theory in the first order formalism. Besides the Einstein-Hilbert term, the effective gravity has a cosmological constant term, a curvature squared term, a torsion squared term and a matter sector. To obtain such geometrodynamical theory, asymptotic freedom and the Gribov parameter (soft BRST symmetry breaking) are crucial. Particularly, Newton and cosmological constant are related to these parameters and they also run as functions of the energy scale. One-loop computations are performed and the results are interpreted.

About the triviality of the higher derivative sector in the abelian Lee-Wick model

Canonical quantization is reviewed here for the Abelian Lee-Wick model by using the Dirac constraints method, a Gupta-Bleuler-like prescription is implemented and the BRST charge operator for this model is built. New degrees of freedom associated to the (higher derivatives) Lee-Wick ghost are excluded from the (physical) space of observables by the imposition of a Piguet-Nielsen-type BRST-extended symmetry for the Lee-Wick mass term, removing the Lee-Wick mass parameter of the theory, which implies remove all the higher-derivative sector. In addition, another prescription based on a new subsidiary condition of invariance under a purely higher-derivative BRST-type new symmetry is proposed.

Induced gravity from gauge theories

We discuss the possibility of a class of gauge theories, in four Euclidean dimensions, to describe gravity at quantum level. The requirement is that, at low energies, these theories can be identified with gravity as a geometrodynamical theory. Specifically, we deal with de Sitter-type groups and show that a Riemann-Cartan first order gravity emerges. An analogy with quantum chromodynamics is also formulated. Under this analogy it is possible to associate a soft BRST breaking to a continuous deformation between both sectors of the theory, namely, ultraviolet and infrared. Moreover, instead of hadrons and glueballs, the physical observables are identified with the geometric properties of spacetime. Furthermore, Newton and cosmological constants can be determined from the dynamical content of the theory.

Gauge theories and gravity

Pure gauge theories for de Sitter, anti de Sitter and orthogonal groups, in four-dimensional Euclidean spacetime, are studied. It is shown that, if the theory is asymptotically free and a dynamical mass is generated, then an effective geometry may be induced and a gravity theory emerges.

Formal aspects of spin currents in material media

The relativistic generalization of the broken continuity equation that describes spin currents is exploited in general material media. The field theoretical techniques for the usual U(1) gauge theory with fermions in material media is employed. The spin current equations are obtained from the study of the symmetries of electrodynamics in material media. Moreover, we obtain the conditions that constrain the spin current to be conserved. One of the novel results is that the analogue spin current for the photon can be also defined. In the latter case, the conditions are useful constraints on the fields and the properties of the media.

de Sitter gauge theories and induced gravities

Pure de Sitter, anti de Sitter, and orthogonal gauge theories in four-dimensional Euclidean spacetime are studied. It is shown that, if the theory is asymptotically free and a dynamical mass is generated, then an effective geometry may be induced and a gravity theory emerges. The asymptotic freedom and the running of the mass might account for an Inönü-Wigner contraction which induces a breaking of the gauge group to the Lorentz group, while the mass itself is responsible for the coset sector of the gauge field to be identified with the effective vierbein. Furthermore, the resulting local isometries are Lorentzian for the anti de Sitter group and Euclidean for the de Sitter and orthogonal groups.

The role of gauge symmetry in spintronics

In this work we employ a field theoretical approach to explain the nature of the non-conserved spin current in spintronics. In particular, we consider the usual U(1) gauge theory for the electromagnetism at classical level in order to obtain the broken continuity equation involving the spin current and spin-transfer torque. Inspired in the recent work of A. Vernes, B. L. Gyorffy and P. Weinberger where they obtain such equation in terms of relativistic quantum mechanics, we formalize their result in terms of the well known currents of field theory such as the Bargmann-Wigner current and the chiral current. Thus, an interpretation of spintronics is provided in terms of Noether currents (conserved or not) and symmetries of the electromagnetism. In fact, the main result of the present work is that the non-conservation of the spin current is associated to the gauge invariance of physical observables where the breaking term is proportional to the chiral current. Moreover, we generalize their result by including the electromagnetic field as a dynamical field instead of an external one.

Ultrarelativistic Bose-Einstein Gas on Lorentz Symmetry Violation

In this paper we study the effects of Lorentz Symmetry Breaking on thermodynamics properties of ideal gases. Inspired in the dispersion relation came from the Carroll-Field-Jackiw model for Electrodynamics with Lorentz and CPT violation term, we compute the thermodynamics quantities for a Boltzmann, Fermi-Dirac and Bose-Einstein distributions. Two regimes are analyzed: the non- relativistic and the relativistic one. In the first case we show that the topological mass induced by the Chern-Simons term behaves as a chemical potential. For the Bose-Einstein gases it could be found a condensation in both regimes, being the appearance of a condensate in the relativistic regime, the main contribution of this work.

Affine gauge theory of gravity and its reduction to the Riemann-Cartan geometry

We discuss a possible framework for the construction of a quantum gravity theory where the principles of QFT and general relativity can coexist harmonically. Moreover, in order to fix the correct gauge group of the theory we study the most general one, the affine group and its natural reduction to the orthogonal group. The price we pay for simplifying the geometry is the presence of matter fields associated with the nonmetric degrees of freedom of the original setup. The result is independent of the starting theory.

On the topological reduction from the affine to the orthogonal gauge theory of gravity

Making use of the fibre bundle theory to describe metric-affine gauge theories of gravity we are able to show that metric-affine gauge theory can be reduced to the Riemann-Cartan one. The price we pay for simplifying the geometry is the presence of matter fields associated with the nonmetric degrees of freedom of the original setup. Also, a possible framework for the construction of a quantum gravity theory is developed along the text.

A conical deficit in the AdS4/CFT3 correspondence

Inspired by the AdS/CFT correspondence we propose a new duality that allow the study of strongly coupled field theories living in a 2+1 conical space-time. Solving the 4-d Einstein equations in the presence of an infinite static string and negative cosmological constant we obtain a conical AdS4 space-time whose boundary is identified with the 2+1 cone found by Deser, Jackiw and 't Hooft. Using the AdS4/CFT3 correspondence we calculate retarded Green's functions of scalar operators living in the cone.

Aspects of nonmetricity in gravity theories

In this work, we show that a class of metric-affine gravities can be reduced to a Riemann-Cartan one. The reduction is based on the cancelation of the nonmetricity against the symmetric components of the spin connection. A heuristic proof, in the Einstein-Cartan formalism, is performed in the special case of diagonal unitary tangent metric tensor. The result is that the nonmetric degrees of freedom decouple from the geometry. Thus, from the point of view of isometries on the tangent manifold, the equivalence might be viewed as an isometry transition from the affine group to the Lorentz group, $A(d,\mathbb{R})\longmapsto SO(d)$. Furthermore, in this transition, depending on the form of the starting action, the nonmetricity degrees might present a dynamical matter field character, with no geometric interpretation in the Riemann-Cartan geometry.

Discussing Quantum Aspects of Higher-Derivative 3D-Gravity in the First-Order Formalism

In this paper, we reassess the issue of deriving the propagators and identifying the spectrum of excitations associated to the vielbein and spin connection of (1+2)-D gravity in the presence of dynamical torsion, while working in the first-order formulation. A number of peculiarities is pointed out whenever the Chern-Simons term is taken into account along with a combination of bilinear terms in the torsion tensor. We present a procedure to derive the full set of propagators, based on an algebra of enlarged spin-type operators, and we discuss under which conditions the poles of the tree-level 2-point functions correspond to physical excitations that do not conflict with causality and unitarity.

Graviton Excitations and Lorentz-Violating Gravity with Cosmological Constant

Motivated by the interest raised by the problem of Lorenz-symmetry violating gauge theories in connetion with gravity models, this contribution sets out to provide a general method to systematically study the excitation spectrum of gravity actions which include a Lorentz-symmetry breaking Chern-Simons-type action term for the spin connection. A complete set of spin-type operators is found which accounts for the (Lorentz) violation parameter to all orders and graviton propagators are worked out in a number of different situations.

Effective gravity from a quantum gauge theory in Euclidean space-time

We consider a $SO(d)$ gauge theory in an Euclidean $d$-dimensional space-time, which is known to be renormalizable to all orders in perturbation theory for $2\le{d}\le4$. Then, with the help of a space-time representation of the gauge group, the gauge theory is mapped into a curved space-time with linear connection. Further, in that mapping the gauge field plays the role of the linear connection of the curved space-time and an effective metric tensor arises naturally from the mapping. The obtained action, being quadratic in the Riemann-Christoffel tensor, at a first sight, spoils a gravity interpretation of the model. Thus, we provide a sketch of a mechanism that breaks the $SO(d)$ color invariance and generates the Einstein-Hilbert term, as well as a cosmological constant term, allowing an interpretation of the model as a modified gravity in the Palatini formalism. In that sense, gravity can be visualized as an effective classical theory, originated from a well defined quantum gauge theory. We also show that, in the four dimensional case, two possibilities for particular solutions of the field equations are the de Sitter and Anti de Sitter space-times.
