Large Miscibility Gap in the Ba(Mn_xFe_{1-x})2As2 System

The compounds BaMn2As2 and BaFe2As2 both crystallize in the body-centered-tetragonal ThCr2Si2-type (122-type) structure at room temperature but exhibit quite different unit cell volumes and very different magnetic and electronic transport properties. Evidently reflecting these disparities, we have discovered a large miscibility gap in the system Ba(Mn_xFe_{1-x})2As2. Rietveld refinements of powder x-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements on samples slow-cooled from 1000 C to room temperature (RT) reveal a two-phase mixture of BaMn2As2 and Ba(Mn_{0.12}Fe_{0.88})2As2 phases together with impurity phases for x = 0.2, 0.4, 0.5, 0.6 and 0.8. We infer that there exists a miscibility gap in this system at 300 K with composition limits 0.12 < x < 1. For samples quenched from 1000 C to 77 K, the refinements of RT XRD data indicate that the miscibility gap at RT narrows at 1000 C to 0.2 < x < 0.8. Samples with x=0.4, 0.5 and 0.6 quenched from 1100-1400 C to 77 K contain a single 122-type phase together with significant amounts of Fe_{1-x}Mn_xAs and FeAs2 impurity phases. These results indicate that the system is not a pseudo-binary system over the whole composition range and that the 122-type phase has a significant homogeneity range at these temperatures. Magnetic susceptibility, electrical resistivity and heat capacity measurements versus temperature of the single-phase quenched polycrystalline samples with x = 0.2 and 0.8 and for lightly doped BaMn2As2 crystals are reported.

Direct evidence of long-range ordering of reduced magnetic moments in the spin-gap compound CeOs2Al10 through muon spin relaxation investigations

We have carried out neutron diffraction, muon spin relaxation (muSR) and inelastic neutron scattering investigations on a polycrystalline sample of CeOs2Al10 to investigate the nature of the phase transition observed near 29 K in the resistivity and heat capacity. Our muSR data clearly reveal coherent frequency oscillations below 28 K, indicating the presence of an internal field at the muon site, which confirms the long-range magnetic ordering of the Ce-moment below 28 K. Upon cooling the sample below 15 K, unusual behaviour of the temperature dependent muSR frequencies may indicate either a change of the muon site, consistent with the observation of superstructure reflections in electron diffraction or a change of the ordered magnetic structure. Neutron diffraction data do not reveal any clear sign of either magnetic Bragg peaks or superlattice reflections. Furthermore, inelastic neutron scattering (INS) measurements clearly reveal the presence of a sharp inelastic excitation near 11 meV between 5 K and 26 K, due to opening of a gap in the spin excitation spectrum, which transforms into a broad response at and above 30 K. The magnitude of the spin-gap (11 meV) as derived from the INS peak position agrees very well with the gap value as estimated from the bulk properties.

Magnetic properties of PrPd$_{2}$Si$_{2}$ and PrPt$_{2}$Si$_{2}$

We have investigated the two rare-earth intermetallic compounds PrPd$_{2}$Si$_{2}$ and PrPt$_{2}$Si$_{2}$ by means of magnetization, electrical resistivity and heat capacity measurements. While PrPd$_{2}$Si$_{2}$ exhibits an antiferromagnetic ordering at 3 K, no magnetic ordering is observed in PrPt$_{2}$Si$_{2}$ down to 2 K. The different magnetic behaviors of these two compounnds are due to different crystalline electric field (CEF) level schemes. The specific heat data suggest a quasi-quartet ground state in PrPd$_2$Si$_2$ in contrast to a nonmagnetic singlet ground state in PrPt$_2$Si$_2$. This difference is attributed to the loss of a mirror plane upon changing the crystal structure from the ThCr$_2$Si$_2$ type (PrPd$_2$Si$_2$) to the CaBe$_2$Ge$_2$ type (PrPt$_2$Si$_2$). Further on, a large magnetoresistance is also observed in the magnetically ordered state of PrPd$_2$Si$_2$.

Valence fluctuation in Ce$_{2}$Co$_{3}$Ge$_{5}$ and crystal field effect in Pr$_{2}$Co$_{3}$Ge$_{5}$

Polycrystalline samples of ternary rare earth germanides R$_{2}$Co$_{3}$Ge$_{5}$(R = La, Ce and Pr) have been prepared and investigated by means of magnetic susceptibility, isothermal magnetization, electrical resistivity and specific heat measurements. All these compounds crystallize in orthorhombic U$_{2}$Co$_{3}$Si$_{5}$ structure (space group \textit{Ibam}). No evidence of magnetic or superconducting transition is observed in any of these compounds down to 2 K. The unit cell volume of Ce$_{2}$Co$_{3}$Ge$_{5}$ deviates from the expected lanthanide contraction, indicating non trivalent state of Ce ions in this compound. The reduced value of effective moment ($μ_{eff}$ $\approx$ 0.95 $μ_{B}$) compared to that expected for trivalent Ce ions further supports valence fluctuating nature of Ce in Ce$_{2}$Co$_{3}$Ge$_{5}$. The observed temperature dependence of magnetic susceptibility is consistent with ionic interconfiguration fluctuation (ICF) model. Although no sharp anomaly due to a phase transition is seen, a broad Schottky-type anomaly is observed in the magnetic part of specific heat of Pr$_{2}$Co$_{3}$Ge$_{5}$. An analysis of $C_{mag}$ data suggests a singlet ground state in Pr$_{2}$Co$_{3}$Ge$_{5}$ separated from the singlet first excited state by 22 K and a doublet second excited state at 73 K.

Heavy fermion behavior in PrRh2B2C: Excitonic mass enhancement

We report magnetic and transport properties of a new quaternary borocarbide PrRh$_{2}$B$_{2}$C, based on magnetisation, resistivity and specific heat studies. This compound forms in LuNi$_{2}$B$_{2}$C-type tetragonal structure (space group {\it I4/mmm}) and does not exhibit magnetic ordering or superconductivity down to 0.5 K. The crystal field analysis of specific heat data suggests a singlet ground state in this compound. The high value of the Sommerfeld coefficient, $γ$ $\approx$ 250 mJ/mole K$^{2}$, together with a singlet ground state suggests that the heavy fermion behaviour in PrRh$_{2}$B$_{2}$C results from the interaction of the conduction electrons with the low lying crystal field excitations. No signature of magnetic ordering or superconductivity is observed in PrRh$_{2}$B$_{2}$C under the application of pressure up to 23 kbar.

Magnetic behaviour of PrPd2B2C

We have synthesized a new quaternary borocarbide PrPd$_{2}$B$_{2}$C and measured its magnetization, electrical resistivity and specific heat. The compound crystallizes in the LuNi$_{2}$B$_{2}$C-type tetragonal structure (space group {\it I4/mmm}). Above 100 K the magnetic susceptibility follows Curie-Weiss behavior with effective moment $μ_{eff}$ = 3.60 $μ_{B}$, which is very close to the value expected for Pr$^{3+}$ ions. We do not find evidence for magnetic or superconducting transition down to 0.5 K. Specific heat exhibits a broad Schottky type anomaly with a peak at 24 K, very likely related to crystal electric field (CEF) excitation. The magnetic properties suggest the presence of a singlet CEF ground state leading to a Van-Vleck paramagnetic ground state.

Magnetic order in Pr2Pd3Ge5 and possible heavy fermion behavior in Pr2Rh3Ge5

We report our results on two new ternary intermetallic compounds Pr$_{2}$Pd$_{3}$Ge$_{5}$ and Pr$_{2}$Rh$_{3}$Ge$_{5}$ based on magnetic susceptibility, magnetization, specific heat, resistivity and magnetoresistance data. These compounds form in U$_{2}$Co$_{3}$Si$_{5}$-type orthorhombic structure (space group \textit{Ibam}). Pr$_{2}$Pd$_{3}$Ge$_{5}$ exhibits two magnetic transitions at T$_{N1}$ = 7.5 K and T$_{N2}$ = 8.3 K. In the magnetically ordered state Pr$_{2}$Pd$_{3}$Ge$_{5}$ exhibits a field induced metamagnetic transition and unusually large magnetoresistance. Pr$_{2}$Rh$_{3}$Ge$_{5}$ does not show any phase transition down to 0.5 K. It has a CEF singlet ground state, separated from the first excited state by about 10 K. The low lying crystal field excitations lead to exciton mediated electronic mass enhancement as evidenced by large Sommerfeld coefficient ($γ$ $\sim$ 80 mJ/mol K$^2$) in Pr$_{2}$Rh$_{3}$Ge$_{5}$.
