Deformed shell model results for two neutrino positron double beta decay of $^{84}$Sr

Half-lives $T_{1/2}^{2ν}$ for two neutrino positron double beta decay modes $β^{+}$EC/ECEC are calculated for $^{84}$Sr, a nucleus of current experimental interest, within the framework of the deformed shell model based on Hartree-Fock states employing a modified Kuo interaction in ($^{2}p_{3/2}$, $^{1}f_{5/2}$, $^{2}p_{1/2}$, $^{1}g_{9/2}$) space. For a reasonable description of the spectra of $^{84}$Sr and $^{84}$Kr and to generate allowed GT strengths, the single particle energies of the proton and neutron $^1g_{9/2}$ orbitals, relative to the $^{2}p_{3/2}$ orbital energy, are chosen to be (3.5 MeV, 1.5 MeV) for both $^{84}$Sr and $^{84}$Rb and (1.5 MeV, 1.5 MeV) for $^{84}$Kr. With this, the calculated half-lives for the $β^+$EC and ECEC modes are $\sim 10^{26}$yr and $\sim 4 \times 10^{24}$yr respectively.

Spectral properties of two-body random matrix ensembles for boson systems with spin

For $m$ number of bosons, carrying spin ($\cs=\spin$) degree of freedom, in $Ω$ number of single particle orbitals, each doubly degenerate, we introduce and analyze embedded Gaussian orthogonal ensemble of random matrices generated by random two-body interactions that are spin ($S$) scalar [BEGOE(2)-$\cs$]. Embedding algebra for the BEGOE(2)-$\cs$ ensemble and also for BEGOE(1+2)-$\cs$ that includes the mean-field one-body part is $U(2Ω) \supset U(Ω) \otimes SU(2)$ with SU(2) generating spin. A method for constructing the ensembles in fixed-($m,S$) spaces has been developed. Numerical calculations show that for BEGOE(2)-$\cs$, the fixed-$(m,S)$ density of states is close to Gaussian and level fluctuations follow GOE in the dense limit. For BEGOE(1+2)-$\cs$, generically there is Poisson to GOE transition in level fluctuations as the interaction strength (measured in the units of the average spacing of the single particle levels defining the mean-field) is increased. The interaction strength needed for the onset of the transition is found to decrease with increasing $S$. Covariances in energy centroids and spectral variances are analyzed. Propagation formula is derived for the variance propagator for the fixed-$(m,S)$ ensemble averaged spectral variances. Variance propagator clearly shows, by applying the Jacquod and Stone prescription, that the BEGOE(2)-$\cs$ ensemble generates ground states with spin $S=S_{max}$. This is further corroborated by analyzing the structure of the ground states in the presence of the exchange interaction $\hat{S}^2$ in BEGOE(1+2)-$\cs$. Natural spin ordering is also observed with random interactions. Going beyond these, we also introduce pairing symmetry in the space defined by BEGOE(2)-$\cs$. Expectation values of the pairing Hamiltonian show that random interactions exhibit pairing correlations in the ground state region.

One plus two-body random matrix ensembles with parity: Density of states and parity ratios

One plus two-body embedded Gaussian orthogonal ensemble of random matrices with parity [EGOE(1+2)-$π$] generated by a random two-body interaction (modeled by GOE in two particle spaces) in the presence of a mean-field, for spinless identical fermion systems, is defined, generalizing the two-body ensemble with parity analyzed by Papenbrock and Weidenmüller [Phys. Rev. C {\bf 78}, 054305 (2008)], in terms of two mixing parameters and a gap between the positive $(π=+)$ and negative $(π=-)$ parity single particle (sp) states. Numerical calculations are used to demonstrate, using realistic values of the mixing parameters appropriate for some nuclei, that the EGOE(1+2)-$π$ ensemble generates Gaussian form (with corrections) for fixed parity eigenvalue densities (i.e. state densities). The random matrix model also generates many features in parity ratios of state densities that are similar to those predicted by a method based on the Fermi-gas model for nuclei. We have also obtained, by applying the formulation due to Chang et al [Ann. Phys. (N.Y.) {\bf 66}, 137 (1971)], a simple formula for the spectral variances defined over fixed-$(m_1,m_2)$ spaces, where $m_1$ is the number of fermions in the +ve parity sp states and $m_2$ is the number of fermions in the -ve parity sp states. Similarly, using the binary correlation approximation, in the dilute limit, we have derived expressions for the lowest two shape parameters. The smoothed densities generated by the sum of fixed-$(m_1,m_2)$ Gaussians with lowest two shape corrections describe the numerical results in many situations. The model also generates preponderance of +ve parity ground states for small values of the mixing parameters and this is a feature seen in nuclear shell model results.

Random matrix ensembles with random interactions: Results for EGUE(2)-SU(4)

We introduce in this paper embedded Gaussian unitary ensemble of random matrices, for $m$ fermions in $Ω$ number of single particle orbits, generated by random two-body interactions that are SU(4) scalar, called EGUE(2)-SU(4). Here the SU(4) algebra corresponds to Wigner's supermultiplet SU(4) symmetry in nuclei. Formulation based on Wigner-Racah algebra of the embedding algebra $U(4Ω) \supset U(Ω) \otimes SU(4)$ allows for analytical treatment of this ensemble and using this analytical formulas are derived for the covariances in energy centroids and spectral variances. It is found that these covariances increase in magnitude as we go from EGUE(2) to EGUE(2)-$\cs$ to EGUE(2)-SU(4) implying that symmetries may be responsible for chaos in finite interacting quantum systems.

Deformed shell model results for two neutrino positron double beta decay of $^{74}$Se

Half-lives $T_{1/2}^{2ν}$ for two neutrino positron double beta decay modes $β^{+}$EC/ECEC are calculated for $^{74}$Se, a nucleus of current experimental interest, using deformed shell model based on Hartree-Fock states employing a modified Kuo interaction in ($^{2}p_{3/2}$, $^{1}f_{5/2}$, $^{2}p_{1/2}$, $^{1}g_{9/2}$) space. The calculated half-life for the ECEC mode is $\sim 10^{26}$yr and it may be possible to observe this in the near future with improved sensitivity of experiments.

Energy Centroids in the presence of random interactions

In this paper we study energy centroids such as those with fixed spin and isospin, those with fixed irreducible representations for bosons, in the presence of random two-body and/or three-body interactions. Our results show that regularities of energy centroids of fixed spin states reported in earlier works are more robust than expected.

Bivariate $t$-distribution for transition matrix elements in Breit-Wigner to Gaussian domains of interacting particle systems

Interacting many-particle systems with a mean-field one body part plus a chaos generating random two-body interaction having strength $λ$, exhibit Poisson to GOE and Breit-Wigner (BW) to Gaussian transitions in level fluctuations and strength functions with transition points marked by $λ=λ_c$ and $λ=λ_F$, respectively; $λ_F >> λ_c$. For these systems theory for matrix elements of one-body transition operators is available, as valid in the Gaussian domain, with $λ> λ_F$, in terms of orbitals occupation numbers, level densities and an integral involving a bivariate Gaussian in the initial and final energies. Here we show that, using bivariate $t$-distribution, the theory extends below from the Gaussian regime to the BW regime up to $λ=λ_c$. This is well tested in numerical calculations for six spinless fermions in twelve single particle states.

Regularities with random interactions in energy centroids defined by group symmetries

Regular structures generated by random interactions in energy centroids defined over irreducible representations (irreps) of some of the group symmetries of the interacting boson models $sd$IBM, $sdg$IBM, $sd$IBM-$T$ and $sd$IBM-$ST$ are studied by deriving trace propagations equations for the centroids. It is found that, with random interactions, the lowest and highest group irreps in general carry most of the probability for the corresponding centroids to be lowest in energy. This generalizes the result known earlier, via numerical diagonalization, for the more complicated fixed spin ($J$) centroids where simple trace propagation is not possible.

Classification of States in O(8) Proton-Neutron Pairing Model

Isoscalar (T=0) plus isovector (T=1) pairing hamiltonian in LS-coupling, which is important for heavy N=Z nuclei, is solvable in terms of a O(8) algebra for some special values of the mixing parameter that measures the competition between T=0 and T=1 pairing. The O(8) algebra is generated, amongst others, by the $S=1,T=0$ and $S=0,T=1$ pair creation and annihilation operators . Shell model algebras, with only number conserving operators, that are complementary to the $O(8) \supset O_{ST}(6) \supset O_S(3) \otimes O_T(3)$, $O(8) \supset [ O_S(5) \supset O_S(3) ] \otimes O_T(3)$ and $O(8) \supset [ O_T(5) \supset O_T(3)] \otimes O_S(3)$ sub-algebras are identified. The problem of classification of states for a given number of nucleons (called `plethysm' problem in group theory), for these group chains is solved explicitly for states with O(8) seniority $v=0, 1, 2, 3$ and 4. Using them, band structures in isospin space are identified for states with $v=0, 1, 2$ and 3.

Chaos and localization in the wavefunctions of complex atoms NdI, PmI and SmI

Wavefunctions of complex lanthanide atoms NdI, PmI and SmI, obtained via multi-configuration Dirac-Fock method, are analyzed for density of states in terms of partial densities, strength functions ($F_k(E)$), number of principal components ($ξ_2(E)$) and occupancies ($\lan n_α\ran^E$) of single particle orbits using embedded Gaussian orthogonal ensemble of one plus two-body random matrix ensembles [EGOE(1+2)]. It is seen that density of states are in general multi-modal, $F_k(E)$'s exhibit variations as function of the basis states energy and $ξ_2(E)$'s show structures arising from localized states. The sources of these departures from EGOE(1+2) are investigated by examining the partial densities, correlations between $F_k(E)$, $ξ_2(E)$ and $\lan n_α\ran^E$ and also by studying the structure of the Hamiltonian matrices. These studies point out the operation of EGOE(1+2) but at the same time suggest that weak admixing between well separated configurations should be incorporated into EGOE(1+2) for more quantitative description of chaos and localization in NdI, PmI and SmI.

SU(N) Wigner-Racah algebra for the matrix of second moments of embedded Gaussian unitary ensemble of random matrices

Recently Pluhar and Weidenmueller [Ann. Phys. (N.Y.) Vol 297, 344 (2002)] showed that the eigenvectors of the matrix of second moments of embedded Gaussian unitary ensemble of random matrices generated by k-body interactions (EGUE(k)) for m fermions in N single particle states are SU(N) Wigner coefficients and derived also an expression for the eigenvalues. Going beyond this work, we will show that the eigenvalues of this matrix are square of a SU(N) Racah coefficient and thus the matrix of second moments of EGUE(k) is solved completely by SU(N) Wigner-Racah algebra.

Random interactions in nuclei and extension of $0^+$ dominance in ground states to irreps of group symmetries

Random one plus two-body hamiltonians invariant with respect to $O({\cal N}_1) \oplus O({\cal N}_2)$ symmetry in the group-subgroup chains $U({\cal N}) \supset U({\cal N}_1) \oplus U({\cal N}_2) \supset O({\cal N}_1) \oplus O({\cal N}_2)$ and $U({\cal N}) \supset O({\cal N}) \supset O({\cal N}_1) \oplus O({\cal N}_2)$ chains of a variety of interacting boson models are used to investigate the probability of occurrence of a given $(ω_1 ω_2)$ irreducible representation (irrep) to be the ground state in even-even nuclei; $[ω_1]$ and $[ω_2]$ are symmetric irreps of $O({\cal N}_1)$ and $O({\cal N}_2)$ respectively. Numerical results obtained for ${\cal N}_1 \geq 3, {\cal N}_2=1$ and ${\cal N}_1, {\cal N}_2 \geq 3$ situations are well explained by an extended Hartree-Bose mean-field analysis.

Strength functions, entropies and duality in weakly to strongly interacting fermionic systems

We revisit statistical wavefunction properties of finite systems of interacting fermions in the light of strength functions and their participation ratio and information entropy. For weakly interacting fermions in a mean-field with random two-body interactions of increasing strength $λ$, the strength functions $F_k(E)$ are well known to change, in the regime where level fluctuations follow Wigner's surmise, from Breit-Wigner to Gaussian form. We propose an ansatz for the function describing this transition which we use to investigate the participation ratio $ξ_2$ and the information entropy $S^{\rm info}$ during this crossover, thereby extending the known behavior valid in the Gaussian domain into much of the Breit-Wigner domain. Our method also allows us to derive the scaling law for the duality point $λ= λ_d$, where $F_k(E)$, $ξ_2$ and $S^{\rm info}$ in both the weak ($λ=0$) and strong mixing ($λ= \infty$) basis coincide as $λ_d \sim 1/\sqrt{m}$, where $m$ is the number of fermions. As an application, the ansatz function for strength functions is used in describing the Breit-Wigner to Gaussian transition seen in neutral atoms CeI to SmI with valence electrons changing from 4 to 8.

O(12) limit and complete classification of symmetry schemes in proton-neutron interacting boson model

It is shown that the proton-neutron interacting boson model (pnIBM) admits new symmetry limits with O(12) algebra which break F-spin but preserves the quantum number M_F. The generators of O(12) are derived and the quantum number `v' of O(12) for a given boson number N is determined by identifying the corresponding quasi-spin algebra. The O(12) algebra generates two symmetry schemes and for both of them, complete classification of the basis states and typical spectra are given. With the O(12) algebra identified, complete classification of pnIBM symmetry limits with good M_F is established.

Structure of wavefunctions in (1+2)-body random matrix ensembles

Abstrtact: Random matrix ensembles defined by a mean-field one-body plus a chaos generating random two-body interaction (called embedded ensembles of (1+2)-body interactions) predict for wavefunctions, in the chaotic domain, an essentially one parameter Gaussian forms for the energy dependence of the number of principal components NPC and the localization length ${\boldmath $l$}_H$ (defined by information entropy), which are two important measures of chaos in finite interacting many particle systems. Numerical embedded ensemble calculations and nuclear shell model results, for NPC and ${\boldmath $l$}_H$, are compared with the theory. These analysis clearly point out that for realistic finite interacting many particle systems, in the chaotic domain, wavefunction structure is given by (1+2)-body embedded random matrix ensembles.

Breit-Wigner to Gaussian transition in strength functions

Employing hamiltonians defined by two-body embedded Gaussian orthogonal ensemble of random matrices(EGOE(2)) plus a mean-field producing one-body part, strength functions (for states defined by the one-body part) are constructed for various values of the strength of the chaos generating two-body part. Numerical calculations for six and seven fermion systems clearly demonstrate Breit-Wigner to Gaussian transition, in the chaotic domain, in strength functions as found earlier in nuclear shell model and Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick model calculations.

Nature of matrix elements in the quantum chaotic domain of interacting particle systems

There is a newly emerging understanding that in the chaotic domain of isolated finite interacting many particle systems smoothed densities define the statistical description of these systems and these densities follow from embedded (two-body) random matrix ensembles and their various deformations. These ensembles predict that the smoothed form of matrix elements of a transition operator between the chaotic eigenstates weighted by the densities at the two ends (i.e. the bivariate strength density) will be a bivariate Gaussian with the bivariate correlation coefficient arising out of the non-commutability of the hamiltonian and the transition operator involved. The ensemble theory extends to systems with a mean-field and a chaos generating two-body interaction (as in nuclei, atoms and diffusive quantum dots). These developments in many-body quantum chaos are described with special reference to one-body transition operators.

Transition Strength Sums and Quantum Chaos in Shell Model States

For the embedded Gaussian orthogonal ensemble (EGOE) of random matrices, the strength sums generated by a transition operator acting on an eigenstate vary with the excitation energy as the ratio of two Gaussians. This general result is compared to exact shell model calculations, with realistic interactions, of spherical orbit occupancies and Gamow-Teller strength sums in some $(ds)$ and $(fp)$ shell examples. In order to confirm that EGOE operates in the chaotic domain of the shell model spectrum, calculations are carried out using two different interpolating hamiltonians generating order-chaos transitions. Good agreement is obtained in the chaotic domain of the spectrum, and strong deviations are observed as nuclear motion approaches a regular regime (transition strength sums appear to follow the Dyson's $Δ_3$ statistic). More importantly, they shed new light on the newly emerging understanding that in the chaotic domain of isolated finite interacting many particle systems smoothed densities (they include strength functions) define the statistical description of these systems and these densities follow from embedded random matrix ensembles; some EGOE calculations to this end are presented.
