Dynamical response and confinement of the electrons at the LaAlO3/SrTiO3 interface

With infrared ellipsometry and transport measurements we investigated the electrons at the interface between LaAlO3 and SrTiO3. We obtained a sheet carrier density of Ns~5-9x 10E13 cm^-2, an effective mass of m*~3m_e, and a strongly frequency dependent mobility. The latter are similar as in bulk SrTi1-xNbxO3 and therefore suggestive of polaronic correlations of the confined carriers. We also determined the vertical density profile which has a strongly asymmetric shape with a rapid initial decay over the first 2 nm and a pronounced tail that extends to about 11 nm.

Muon spin rotation study of magnetism and superconductivity in BaFe2-xCoxAs2 and Pr1-xSrxFeAsO

We present a muon spin rotation (\muSR) study of the magnetic and superconducting properties of single crystals of electron-doped BaFe2-xCoxAs2 with x=0.08, 0.20, and 0.25 (Tc=9, 25 and 20K) and of polycrystalline hole-doped Pr1-xSrxFeAsO with x=0 and 0.2 (Tc=15 K). In the former series we observe some interesting parallels with the electron doped SmFeAsO1-xFx 1111-type system [A.J. Drew et al., to appear in Nature Materials 2009 and arXiv:0807.4876]. In particular, we obtain evidence that strongly disordered static magnetism coexists with superconductivity on a microscopic scale in underdoped samples and even at optimum doping there is a slowing down (or enhancement) of dynamic magnetic correlations below Tc\approx25K. To the contrary, for the hole-doped Pr1-xSrxFeAsO samples we obtain evidence for a mesoscopic phase segregation into regions with nearly unperturbed AF order and others that are non magnetic and most likely superconducting. The observed trend resembles the one that was previously reported for hole-doped Ba1-xKxFe2As2 [A.A. Aczel et al., Phys. Rev. B 78, 214503 (2008); J.T. Park et al., arXiv:0811.2224] and thus seems to be fairly common in these hole doped systems.

Coexistence of static magnetism and superconductivity in SmFeAsO1-xFx as revealed by muon spin rotation

The recent observation of superconductivity with critical temperatures up to 55 K in the FeAs based pnictide compounds marks the first discovery of a non copper-oxide based layered high-Tc superconductor (HTSC) [1-3]. It has raised the suspicion that these new materials share a similar pairing mechanism to the cuprates, since both exhibit superconductivity following charge doping of a magnetic parent material. Here we present a muon spin rotation study on SmFeAsO1-xFx (x=0-0.30), which shows that static magnetism persists well into the superconducting regime. The analogy with the cuprates is quite surprising since the parent compounds appear to have different magnetic ground states: itinerant spin density wave for the pnictides contrasted with the Mott-Hubbard insulator in the cuprates. Our findings suggest that proximity to magnetic order and associated soft magnetic fluctuations, rather than the strong electronic correlations in the vicinity of a Mott-Hubbard-metal-to-insulator transition, may be the key ingredients of HTSC.

X-ray study of structural domains in the near-surface region of SrTiO3-substrates with Y0.6Pr0.4Ba2Cu3O7$ / La2/3Ca1/3MnO3 superlattices grown on top

We investigated with synchrotron x-ray diffraction and reflectometry the formation of structural domains in the near-surface region of single crystalline SrTiO3 (001) substrates with Y0.6Pr0.4Ba2Cu3O7 / La2/3Ca1/3MnO3 superlattices grown on top. We find that the antiferrodistortive cubic-to-tetragonal transition, which occurs at T_STO = 104K in the bulk and at a considerably higher temperature of at least 120K in the surface region of SrTiO3, has only a weak influence on the domain formation. The strongest changes occur instead in the vicinitiy of the tetragonal-to-orthorhombic transition in SrTiO3 around 65K, where pronounced surface facets develop that reach deep (at least several micrometers) into the SrTiO3 substrate. These micrometer-sized facets are anisotropic and tilted with respect to one another by up to 0.5deg along the shorter direction. Finally, we find that a third structural transition below 30K gives rise to significant changes in the spread of the c-axis parameters. Overall, our data provide evidence for a strong mutual interaction between the stuctural properties of the SrTiO3 surface and the multilayer grown on top.

Coexistence of magnetic fluctuations and superconductivity in the pnictide high temperature superconductor SmFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_{x}$ measured by muon spin rotation

Muon-spin rotation experiments were performed on the pnictide high temperature superconductor SmFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_{x}$ with x=0.18 and 0.3. We observed an unusual enhancement of slow spin fluctuations in the vicinity of the superconducting which suggests that the spin fluctuations contribute to the formation of an unconventional superconducting state. An estimate of the in-plane penetration depth $λ_{ab}(0)=190(5)$\thinspace nm was obtained, which confirms that the pnictide superconductors obey an Uemura-style relationship between $T_{\mathrm{c}}$ and $λ_{ab}(0)^{-2}$.

Superconducting energy gap and c-axis plasma frequency of (Nd,Sm)O0.82F0.18FeAs superconductors from infrared ellipsometry

We present ellipsometric measurements of the far-infrared dielectric response of polycrystalline samples of the new pnictide superconductor RO0.82F0.18FeAs (R=Nd and Sm). We find evidence that the electronic properties are strongly anisotropic such that the optical spectra are dominated by the weakly conducting c-axis response similar as in the cuprate high-temperature superconductors (HTSC). Accordingly, we obtain an upper limit of the c-axis superconducting plasma frequency of $ω_{{\rm pl},c}^{\rm SC}\leq 260\cm$ which corresponds to a lower limit of the c-axis magnetic penetration depth of $λ_c\geq6\mum$ and an anisotropy of $λ_c/λ_{ab}\geq 30$ as compared to $λ_{ab}=185$ nm from muon spin rotation [A. Drew {\it et al.}, arXiv:0805.1042]. Also in analogy to the cuprate HTSC, our spectra exhibit the signatures of a gap-like suppression of the conductivity in the superconducting state with a large gap magnitude of $2Δ\approx300\cm$ (37 meV) and a ratio of $2Δ/k_{\rm B}\tc\approx8$ that is suggestive of strong coupling.
