Unimodular-Mimetic Cosmology

We combine the unimodular gravity and mimetic gravity theories into a unified theoretical framework, which is proposed to provide a suggestive proposal for a framework that may assist in the discussion and solution search of the cosmological constant problem and of the dark matter issue. After providing the formulation of the unimodular mimetic gravity and investigating all the new features that the vacuum unimodular gravity implies, by using the underlying reconstruction method, we realize some well known cosmological evolutions, with some of these being exotic for the ordinary Einstein-Hilbert gravity. Specifically we provide the vacuum unimodular mimetic gravity description of the de Sitter cosmology and of the perfect fluid with constant equation of state cosmology. As we demonstrate, these cosmologies can be realized by vacuum mimetic unimodular gravity, without the existence of any matter fluid source. Moreover, we investigate how cosmologically viable cosmologies, which are compatible with the recent observational data, can be realized by the vacuum unimodular mimetic gravity. Since in some cases, the graceful exit from inflation problem might exist, we provide a qualitative description of the mechanism that can potentially generate the graceful exit from inflation in these theories, by searching for the unstable de Sitter solutions in the context of unimodular mimetic theories of gravity.

Newton law in covariant unimodular $F(R)$ gravity

We propose a covariant ghost-free unimodular $F(R)$ gravity theory, which contains a three-form field and study its structure using the analogy of the proposed theory with a quantum system which describes a charged particle in uniform magnetic field. Newton's law in non-covariant unimodular $F(R)$ gravity as well as in unimodular Einstein gravity is derived and it is shown to be just the same as in General Relativity. The derivation of Newton's law in covariant unimodular $F(R)$ gravity shows that it is modified precisely in the same way as in the ordinary $F(R)$ theory. We also demonstrate that the cosmology of a Friedmann-Robertson-Walker background, is equivalent in the non-covariant and covariant formulations of unimodular $F(R)$ theory.

The bounce universe history from unimodular $F(R)$ gravity

In this paper we investigate how to realize various quite well known cosmological bouncing models in the context of the recently developed unimodular $F(R)$ gravity. Particularly, we shall study the matter bounce scenario, the singular bounce, the superbounce and a symmetric bounce scenario. We present the behavior of the Hubble radius for each of the bouncing models we shall take into account and we investigate which era of the bouncing model is responsible for the cosmological perturbations. As we shall demonstrate, the various bouncing models do not behave in the same way, so the cosmological perturbations for each model may correspond to a different era, in comparison to other models. Also we present which unimodular $F(R)$ gravity realizes each model. We also show that Newton's law is not modified in the unimodular $F(R)$ gravity, which also is proven to be a ghost-free theory, and in addition we discuss the matter stability issue. Finally, we demonstrate how it is possible to solve a cosmological constant problem in the context of unimodular $F(R)$ gravity.

A Note on Schwarzschild de Sitter Black Holes in Mimetic $F(R)$ Gravity

In this brief note we investigate the conditions under which a Schwarzschild de Sitter black hole spacetime is a solution of the mimetic $F(R)$ gravity with Lagrange multiplier and potential. As we demonstrate, the resulting mimetic $F(R)$ gravity is a slight modification of the ordinary $F(R)$ gravity case, however the resulting perturbation equations are not in all cases identical to the ordinary $F(R)$ gravity case. In the latter case, the perturbation equations are identical to the ones corresponding to the Reissner-Nordström anti-de Sitter black hole.

Unimodular $F(R)$ Gravity

We extend the formalism of the Einstein-Hilbert unimodular gravity in the context of modified $F(R)$ gravity. After appropriately modifying the Friedmann-Robertson-Walker metric in a way that it becomes compatible to the unimodular condition of having a constant metric determinant, we derive the equations of motion of the unimodular $F(R)$ gravity by using the metric formalism of modified gravity with Lagrange multiplier constraint. The resulting equations are studied in frames of reconstruction method, which enables us to realize various cosmological scenarios, which was impossible to realize in the standard Einstein-Hilbert unimodular gravity. Several unimodular $F(R)$ inflationary scenarios are presented, and in some cases, concordance with Planck and BICEP2 observational data can be achieved.

Correspondence of $F(R)$ Gravity Singularities in Jordan and Einstein Frames

We study the finite time singularity correspondence between the Jordan and Einstein frames for various $F(R)$ gravity theories. Particularly we investigate the ordinary pure $F(R)$ gravity case and the unimodular $F(R)$ gravity cases, in the absence of any matter fluids. In the ordinary $F(R)$ gravity cases, by using specific illustrative examples, we show that it is possible to have various correspondences of finite time singularities, and in some cases it is possible a singular cosmology in one frame might be non-singular in the other frame. In the unimodular $F(R)$ gravity case, the unimodular constraint is affected from the conformal transformation, so this has an effect on the metric we choose. Moreover, we study the Einstein frame counterpart theory of the unimodular $F(R)$ gravity case, and we investigate the correspondences of the singularities in the two theories by considering specific illustrative examples. Finally, a brief dynamical system analysis is performed for the vacuum unimodular $F(R)$ gravity and we demonstrate how the dynamical system behaves near the future Big Rip singularity.

Unimodular Mimetic $F(R)$ Inflation

We propose the unimodular-mimetic $F(R)$ gravity theory, to resolve cosmological constant problem and dark matter problem in a unified geometric manner. We demonstrate that such a theory naturally admits accelerating universe evolution. Furthermore, we construct unimodular-mimetic $F(R)$ inflationary cosmological scenarios compatible with the Planck and BICEP2/Keck-Array observational data. We also address the graceful exit issue, which is guaranteed by the existence of unstable de Sitter vacua.

Mimetic $F(R)$ inflation confronted with Planck and BICEP2/Keck Array data

In this paper we demonstrate that in the context of mimetic $F(R)$ gravity with Lagrange multiplier, it is possible to realize cosmologies which are compatible with the recent BICEP2/Keck Array data. We provide some characteristic examples for which the predicted scalar to tensor ratio can be quite smaller in comparison to the upper limit imposed by the BICEP2/Keck Array observations.

Accelerating Cosmology and Phase Structure of F(R) Gravity with Lagrange Multiplier Constraint: Mimetic Approach

We study mimetic $F(R)$ gravity with potential and Lagrange multiplier constraint. In the context of these theories, we introduce a reconstruction technique which enables us to realize arbitrary cosmologies, given the Hubble rate and an arbitrarily chosen $F(R)$ gravity. We exemplify our method by realizing cosmologies that are in concordance with current observations (Planck data) and also well known bouncing cosmologies. The attribute of our method is that the $F(R)$ gravity can be arbitrarily chosen, so we can have the appealing features of the mimetic approach combined with the known features of some $F(R)$ gravities, which unify early-time with late-time acceleration. Moreover, we study the existence and the stability of de Sitter points in the context of mimetic $F(R)$ gravity. In the case of unstable de Sitter points, it is demonstrated that graceful exit from inflation occurs. We also study the Einstein frame counterpart theory of the Jordan frame mimetic $F(R)$ gravity, we discuss the general properties of the theory and exemplify our analysis by studying a quite interesting from a phenomenological point of view, model with two scalar fields. We also calculate the observational indices of the two scalar field model, by using the two scalar field formalism. Furthermore, we extensively study the dynamical system that corresponds to the mimetic $F(R)$ gravity, by finding the fixed points and studying their stability. Finally, we modify our reconstruction method to function in the inverse way and thus yielding which $F(R)$ gravity can realize a specific cosmological evolution, given the mimetic potential and the Lagrange multiplier.

Constraints on Singular Evolution from Gravitational Baryogenesis

We investigate how the gravitational baryogenesis mechanism can potentially constrain the form of a Type IV singularity. Specifically, we study two different models with interesting phenomenology, that realize two distinct Type IV singularities, one occurring at the end of inflation and one during the radiation domination era or during the matter domination era. As we demonstrate, the Type IV singularities occurring at the matter domination era or during the radiation domination era, are constrained by the gravitational baryogenesis, in such a way so that these do not render the baryon to entropy ratio singular. Both the cosmological models we study cannot be realized in the context of ordinary Einstein-Hilbert gravity, and hence our work can only be realized in the context of $F(R)$ gravity and more generally in the context of modified gravity only.

Reissner-Nordström Black Holes in Mimetic $F(R)$ Gravity

In this paper we study under which conditions the Reissner-Nordström-anti de Sitter black hole can be a solution of the vacuum mimetic $F(R)$ gravity with Lagrange multiplier and mimetic scalar potential. As we demonstrate, the resulting picture in the mimetic $F(R)$ gravity case, is different in comparison to the ordinary $F(R)$ gravity case, with the two descriptions resulting to a different set of constraints that need to hold true. We also investigate the metric perturbations in the mimetic $F(R)$ gravity case, for the Reissner-Nordström-anti de Sitter black hole metric, at first order of the perturbed variables. Interestingly enough, the resulting equations are identical to the ones corresponding to the ordinary $F(R)$ gravity Reissner-Nordström-anti de Sitter black hole, at least at first order. We attribute this feature to the particular form of the Reissner-Nordström-anti de Sitter metric, and we speculate for which cases there could be differences between the mimetic and non-mimetic case. Since the perturbation equations are the same for the two cases, it is possible to have black hole instabilities in the mimetic $F(R)$ gravity case too, which can be interpreted as anti-evaporation of the black hole.

Singular Bouncing Cosmology from Gauss-Bonnet Modified Gravity

We study how a cosmological bounce with a Type IV singularity at the bouncing point, can be generated by a classical vacuum $F(G)$ gravity. We focus our investigation on the behavior of the vacuum $F(G)$ theory near the Type IV singular bouncing point and also we address the stability of the resulting solution, by treating the equations of motion as a dynamical system. In addition, we investigate how the scalar perturbations of the background metric evolve, emphasizing to cosmological times near the Type IV singular bouncing point. Finally, we also investigate which mimetic vacuum $F(G)$ gravity can describe the singular bounce cosmology.

Singular Accelerated Evolution in Massive $F(R)$ Bigravity

The possibility to have singular accelerated evolution in the context of $F(R)$ bimetric gravity is investigated. Particularly, we study two singular models of cosmological evolution, one of which is a singular modified version of the Starobinsky $R^2$ inflation model. As we demonstrate, for both models in some cases, the slow-roll parameters become singular at the Type IV singularity, a fact that we interpret as a dynamical instability of the theory under study. This dynamically instability may be an indicator of graceful exit from inflation and we thoroughly discuss this scenario and the interpretation of the singular slow-roll parameters. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that for some versions of $F(R)$ bigravity, singular inflation is realized in consistent way so that inflationary indices are compatible with Planck data. Moreover, we study the late-time behavior of the two singular models and we show that the unified description of early and late-time acceleration can be achieved in the context of bimetric $F(R)$ gravity.

Bounce Loop Quantum Cosmology Corrected Gauss-Bonnet Gravity

We develop a Gauss-Bonnet extension of Loop Quantum Cosmology, by introducing holonomy corrections in modified $F(\mathcal{G})$ theories of gravity. Within the context of our formalism, we provide a perturbative expansion in the critical density, a parameter characteristic of Loop Quantum Gravity theories, and we result in having leading order corrections to the classical $F(\mathcal{G})$ theories of gravity. After extensively discussing the formalism, we present a reconstruction method that makes possible to find the Loop Quantum Cosmology corrected $F(\mathcal{G})$ theory that can realize various cosmological scenarios. Specifically, we studied exponential and power-law bouncing cosmologies, emphasizing on the behavior near the bouncing point and in some cases, the behavior for all the values of the cosmic time is obtained. We exemplify our theoretical constructions by using bouncing cosmologies, and we investigate which Loop Quantum Cosmology corrected Gauss-Bonnet modified gravities can successfully realize such cosmologies.

Viable Mimetic $F(R)$ Gravity Compatible with Planck Observations

Using Mukhanov-Chamseddine mimetic approach, we study $F(R)$ gravity with scalar potential and Lagrange multiplier constraint. As we demonstrate, for a given $F(R)$ gravity and for suitably chosen mimetic potential, it is possible to realize inflationary cosmology consistent with Planck observations. We also investigate the de Sitter solutions of the mimetic $F(R)$ theory and study the stability of the solutions, when these exist, towards linear perturbations, with the unstable solutions, which can provide a mechanism for graceful exit from inflation. Finally, we describe a reconstruction method which can yield the $F(R)$ gravity that can generate realistic inflationary cosmological evolution, given the mimetic potential and the Hubble rate.

Singular Inflationary Universe from $F(R)$ Gravity

Unlike crushing singularities, the so-called Type IV finite-time singularity offers the possibility that the Universe passes smoothly through it, without any catastrophic effects. Then the question is if the effects of a Type IV singularity can be detected in the process of cosmic evolution. In this paper we address this question in the context of $F(R)$ gravity. As we demonstrate, the effects of a Type IV singularity appear in the Hubble flow parameters, which determine the dynamical evolution of the cosmological system. So we study various inflation models incorporating a Type IV singularity, with the singularity occurring at the end of inflation. Particularly we study a toy model and a singular version of the $R^2$ gravity Hubble rate. As we evince, some of the Hubble flow parameters become singular at the singularity, an effect which indicates that at that point a dynamical instability occurs. This dynamical instability eventually indicates the graceful exit from inflation. We demonstrate that the toy model has an unstable de Sitter point at the singularity, so indeed graceful exit could be triggered. In the case of the singular inflation model, graceful exit proceeds in the standard way. In the case of the singular inflation model, we found various scenarios for singular evolution, most of which are compatible with observations, and only one leads to severe instabilities. We also compare the ordinary Starobinsky with the singular inflation model, and we point out the qualitative and quantitative differences. Finally, we study the late-time dynamics of the toy model and of the singular inflation model and we demonstrate that the unification of early and late-time acceleration can be achieved. We also show that it is possible to achieve late-time acceleration similar to the $Λ$-Cold Dark Matter model.

Loop Quantum Cosmology Matter Bounce Reconstruction from $F(R)$ Gravity Using an Auxiliary Field

Using the reconstruction technique with an auxiliary field, we investigate which $F(R)$ gravities can produce the matter bounce cosmological solutions. Owing to the specific functional form of the matter bounce Hubble parameter, the reconstruction technique leads, after some simplifications, to the same Hubble parameter as in the matter bounce scenario. Focusing the study to the large and small cosmic time $t$ limits, we were able to find which $F(R)$ gravities can generate the matter bounce Hubble parameter. In the case of small cosmic time limit, which corresponds to large curvature values, the $F(R)$ gravity is $F(R)\sim R+αR^2$, which is an inflation generating gravity, and at small curvature, or equivalently, large cosmic time, the $F(R)$ gravity generating the corresponding limit of the matter bounce Hubble parameter, is $F(R)\sim \frac{1}{R}$, a gravity known to produce late-time acceleration. Thus we have the physically appealing picture in which a Jordan frame $F(R)$ gravity that imitates the matter bounce solution at large and small curvatures, can generate Starobinsky inflation and late-time acceleration. Moreover, the scale factor corresponding to the reconstruction technique coincides almost completely to the matter bounce scenario scale factor, when considered in the aforementioned limiting curvature cases. This is scrutinized in detail, in order to examine the validity of the reconstruction method in these limiting cases, and according to our analysis, exact agreement is achieved.

Singular deformations of nearly $R^2$ inflation potentials

We investigate in which cases a singular evolution with a singularity of Type IV, can be consistently incorporated in deformations of the $R^2$ inflationary potential. After demonstrating the difficulties that the single scalar field description is confronted with, we use a general two scalar fields model without other matter fluids, to describe the Type IV singular evolution, with one of the two scalar fields being canonical. By appropriately choosing the non-canonical scalar field, we show that the canonical scalar field corresponds to a potential that is nearly the $R^2$ inflation potential. If the Type IV singularity occurs at the end of inflation, the Universe's dynamical evolution near inflation is determined effectively by the canonical scalar field and at late-time the evolution is effectively determined by the non-canonical scalar. We also discuss the evolution of the Universe in terms of the effective equation of state and we show that the Type IV singularity, that occurs at the end of inflation, drives late-time acceleration. If however the singularity occurs at late-time, this might affect the inflationary era. We also investigate which Jordan frame pure $F(R)$ gravity corresponds to the nearly $R^2$ inflation scalar potentials we found. The stability of the solutions in the two scalar fields case is also studied and also we investigate how Type IV singularities can be incorporated in certain limiting cases of $R+R^p$ gravity in the Einstein frame. Finally, we briefly discuss a physical appealing scenario triggered by instabilities in the dynamical system that describes the evolution of the scalar fields.
