Generalized Horndeski-Like Einstein Gauss-Bonnet Inflation with Massless Primordial Gravitons

In this work we shall introduce a theoretical framework comprised by a non-minimal coupled canonical scalar field, a non-minimal coupling to the Gauss-Bonnet invariant and a non-minimal kinetic coupling. This theoretical framework is basically a non-minimally coupled Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory with extra corrections of the form of a non-minimal kinetic coupling. In order to comply with the GW170817 event, we shall impose a constraint on the propagation speed of the primordial tensor perturbations that it is equal to that of light's in vacuum, and this constraint basically specifies the way that the scalar potential and the non-minimal couplings of the theory can be chosen. The whole theoretical framework, which belongs to the larger class of Horndeski theories, cannot yield viable results, due to the fact that the primordial gravitational wave speed is not equal to that of light's. Thus we study this theory by also imposing the constraint of having gravity wave speed equal to the light speed. We directly examine the inflationary phenomenology of our theoretical framework and by assuming the slow-roll conditions, we derived the equations of motion in such a way so that analytical results may be extracted. By using several well motivated models we demonstrate the framework leads to a viable phenomenology.

A Refined Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet Inflationary Theoretical Framework

We provide a refined and much more simplified Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet inflationary theoretical framework, which is compatible with the GW170817 observational constraints on the gravitational wave speed. As in previous works, the constraint that the gravitational wave speed is $c_T^2=1$ in natural units, results to a constraint differential equation that relates the coupling function of the scalar field to the Gauss-Bonnet invariant $ξ(ϕ)$ and the scalar potential $V(ϕ)$. Adopting the slow-roll conditions for the scalar field and the Hubble rate, and in contrast to previous works, by further assuming that $κ\frac{ξ'}{ξ''}\ll 1$, which is motivated by slow-roll arguments, we succeed in providing much more simpler expressions for the slow-roll indices and for the tensor and scalar spectral indices and for the tensor-to-scalar ratio. We exemplify our refined theoretical framework by using an illustrative example with a simple power-law scalar coupling function $ξ(ϕ)\sim ϕ^ν$ and as we demonstrate the resulting inflationary phenomenology is compatible with the latest Planck data. Moreover, this particular model produces a blue-tilted tensor spectral index, so we discuss in brief the perspective of describing the NANOGrav result with this model as is indicated in the recent literature.

On the Occurrence of Finite-time Singularities in Swampland-related Quintessence Dark Energy Models

In this work we focus on the phase space singularities of interactive quintessence model in the presence of matter fluid. This model is related to swampland studies, that the outcomes affect all these Swampland related models with the same dynamical system. We shall form the dynamical system corresponding to the cosmological system, which is eventually autonomous, and by using the dominant balances technique we shall investigate the occurrence or not of finite-time singularities. Our results indicate that the dynamical system of the model may develop finite-time singularities, but these are not general singularities, like in the case that the matter fluids were absent, in which case singularities occurred for general initial conditions. Hence, the presence of matter fluids affects the dynamical system of the cosmological system, making the singularities to depend on the initial conditions, instead of occurring for general initial conditions.

Power-Law $f(R)$ Gravity Corrected Canonical Scalar Field Inflation

The effective inflationary Lagrangian is a prominent challenge for theoretical cosmologists, since it may contain imprints of the quantum epoch. In view of the fact that higher order curvature terms might be present in the effective inflationary Lagrangian, in this work we introduce the theoretical framework of power-law $f(R)$ gravity corrected canonical scalar field inflation, aiming to study the inflationary dynamics of this new framework. The main characteristic of this new theoretical framework is the dominance of a power-law $f(R)$ gravity term $\sim R^n$, with $1<n<2$, compared to the Einstein-Hilbert term $\sim R$. In effect, the field equations are controlled by the $R^n$ term in contrast to the Einstein-Hilbert canonical scalar theory. We extract the slow-roll field equations and we calculate the slow-roll indices of the resulting theory which acquire quite elegant final form, when the slow-roll conditions hold true. Accordingly, we examine quantitatively the inflationary phenomenological implications of the theoretical framework we introduced, by choosing simple hybrid-like scalar field potentials. As we evince the resulting theory is in good agreement with the latest Planck data for a wide range of the free parameters of the model. Thus our theoretical framework makes possible to obtain viable inflationary theories, which otherwise would be non-viable, such as the simple power-law $f(R)$ gravity model or the simple power-law scalar model.

Universal Inflationary Attractors Implications on Static Neutron Stars

We study static neutron stars in the context of a class of non-minimally coupled inflationary potentials, the universal attractors. Universal attractors are known to generate a viable inflationary era, and they fall into the same category of inflationary phenomenology as the $R^2$ model and other well-known cosmological attractors. We present the essential features of universal attractors in both the Einstein and Jordan frame, and we extract the Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff equations in the Einstein frame using the usual notation of theoretical astrophysics. We use a python 3 based double shooting numerical code for our numerical analysis and we construct the $M-R$ graphs for the universal attractor potential, using piecewise polytropic equation of state the small density part of which is the WFF1 or the APR or the SLy equation of state. As we show, all the studied cases predict larger maximum masses for the neutron stars, and all the results are compatible with the GW170817 constraints imposed on the radii of the neutron stars.

Anisotropic compact stars in higher-order curvature theory

In this paper, we shall consider spherically symmetric spacetime solutions describing the interior of stellar compact objects, in the context of higher-order curvature theory of the f(R) type. We shall derive the non--vacuum field equations of the higher-order curvature theory, without assuming any specific form of the $\mathrm{f(R)}$ theory, specifying the analysis for a spherically symmetric spacetime with two unknown functions. We obtain a system of highly non-linear differential equations, which consists of four differential equations with six unknown functions. To solve such a system, we assume a specific form of metric potentials, using the Krori-Barua ansatz. We successfully solve the system of differential equations, and we derive all the components of the energy-momentum tensor. Moreover, we derive the non-trivial general form of $\mathrm{f(R)}$ that may generate such solutions and calculate the dynamic Ricci scalar of the anisotropic star. Accordingly, we calculate the asymptotic form of the function $\mathrm{f(R)}$, which is a polynomial function. We match the derived interior solution with the exterior one, which was derived in \cite{Nashed:2019tuk}, with the latter also resulting in a non-trivial form of the Ricci scalar. Notably but rather expected, the exterior solution differs from the Schwarzschild one in the context of general relativity. The matching procedure will eventually relate two constants with the mass and radius of the compact stellar object. We list the necessary conditions that any compact anisotropic star must satisfy and explain in detail that our model bypasses all of these conditions for a special compact star $\textit {Her X--1 }$, which has an estimated mass and radius \textit {(mass = 0.85 $\pm 0.15M_{\circledcirc}$\,\, and\, \,radius $= 8.1 \pm 0.41$km)}.

Generalizing the Constant-roll Condition in Scalar Inflation

In this work we generalize the constant-roll condition for minimally coupled canonical scalar field inflation. Particularly, we shall assume that the scalar field satisfies the condition $\ddotϕ=α(ϕ) V'(ϕ)$, and we derive the field equations under this assumption. We call the framework extended constant-roll framework. Accordingly we calculate the inflationary indices and the corresponding observational indices of inflation. In order to demonstrate the inflationary viability, we choose three potentials that are problematic in the context of slow-roll dynamics, namely chaotic, linear power-law and exponential inflation, and by choosing a simple power-law form for the smooth function $α(ϕ)$, we show that in the extended constant-roll framework, the models are compatible with the latest 2018 Planck constraints on inflation. We also justify appropriately why we called this new framework extended constant-roll framework, and we show that the condition $\ddotϕ=α(ϕ) V'(ϕ)$ is equivalent to the condition $\ddotϕ=β(ϕ) H \dotϕ$, with the latter condition being a simple generalization of the constant-roll condition. Finally, we examine an interesting physical situation, in which a general extended constant-roll scalar field model is required to satisfy the cosmological tracker condition used in quintessence models. In contrast to the slow-roll and ordinary constant-roll cases, in which case the tracker condition is not compatible with neither the slow-roll or the ordinary constant-roll conditions, the extended constant-roll condition can be compatible with the tracker condition. This feature leads to a new inflationary phenomenological framework, the essential features of which we develop in brief.

Novel Stellar Astrophysics from Extended Gravity

Novel implications on neutron stars come from extended gravity. Specifically, the GW190814 event indicated the probability of having large mass stars in the mass-gap region $2.5-5\, M_{\odot}$. If the secondary component of GW190814 is a neutron star, such large masses are marginally supported by General Relativity (GR), since a very stiff Equation of State (EoS) would be needed to describe such large mass neutron stars, which would be incompatible with the GW170817 event, without any modification of gravity. In view of the two groundbreaking gravitational wave observations, we critically discuss the elevated role of extensions of GR towards the successful description of the GW190814 event, and we also speculate in a quantitative way on the important issue of the largest allowed neutron star mass.

Rescaled Einstein-Hilbert Gravity: Inflation and the Swampland Criteria

In this work we shall study a class of $f(R,ϕ)$ gravity models which during the inflationary era, which is the large curvature regime, result to an effective inflationary Lagrangian that contains a rescaled Einstein-Hilbert term $αR$ in the presence of a canonical minimally coupled scalar field. The dimensionless parameter $α$ is chosen to take values in the range $0<α<1$ and the main motivation for studying these rescaled Einstein-Hilbert $f(R,ϕ)$ gravities, is the fact that the rescaled action may render an otherwise incompatible canonical scalar field theory with the Swampland criteria, to be compatible with the Swampland criteria. As we will show, by studying a large number of inflationary potentials appearing in the 2018 Planck collaboration article for the constraints on inflation, the simultaneous compatibility with both the Planck constraints and the Swampland criteria, is achieved for some models, and the main characteristic of the models for which this is possible, is the small values that the parameter $α$ must take.

Modified Gravity Theories on a Nutshell: Inflation, Bounce and Late-time Evolution

We systematically review some standard issues and also the latest developments of modified gravity in cosmology, emphasizing on inflation, bouncing cosmology and late-time acceleration era. Particularly, we present the formalism of standard modified gravity theory representatives, like $F(R)$, $F(\mathcal{G})$ and $F(T)$ gravity theories, but also several alternative theoretical proposals which appeared in the literature during the last decade. We emphasize on the formalism developed for these theories and we explain how these theories can be considered as viable descriptions for our Universe. Using these theories, we present how a viable inflationary era can be produced in the context of these theories, with the viability being justified if compatibility with the latest observational data is achieved. Also we demonstrate how bouncing cosmologies can actually be described by these theories. Moreover, we systematically discuss several qualitative features of the dark energy era by using the modified gravity formalism, and also we critically discuss how a unified description of inflation with dark energy era can be described by solely using the modified gravity framework. Finally, we also discuss some astrophysical solutions in the context of modified gravity, and several qualitative features of these solutions. The aim of this review is to gather the different modified gravity techniques and form a virtual modified gravity "toolbox", which will contain all the necessary information on inflation, dark energy and bouncing cosmologies in the context of the various forms of modified gravity.

Rescaled Einstein-Hilbert Gravity from $f(R)$ Gravity: Inflation, Dark Energy and the Swampland Criteria

We consider a class of exponential models of $f(R)$ gravity, in the presence of a canonical scalar field, for which at early times the effective Lagrangian of the theory becomes that of a rescaled canonical scalar field with the Einstein-Hilbert term becoming $\sim αR$, with $α$ a dimensionless constant. This rescaled Einstein-Hilbert scalar field theory at early times alters the inflationary phenomenology of well-known scalar field models of inflation, but more importantly, in the context of this rescaled theory, the Swampland criteria are easily satisfied, assuming that the scalar field is slowly rolling. We consider two models of inflation to exemplify our study, a fibre inflation model and a model that belongs to the general class of supergravity $α$-attractor models. The inflationary phenomenology of the models is demonstrated to be viable, and for the same set of values of the free parameters of each model which ensure their inflationary viability, all the known Swampland criteria are satisfied too, and we need to note that we assumed that the first Swampland criterion is marginally satisfied by the scalar field, so $ϕ\sim M_p$ during the inflationary era. Finally, we examine the late-time phenomenology of the fibre inflation potential in the presence of the full $f(R)$ gravity, and we demonstrate that the resulting model produces a viable dark energy era, which resembles the $Λ$-Cold-Dark-Mater model. Thus in the modified gravity model we present, the Universe is described by a rescaled Einstein-Hilbert gravity at early times, hence in some sense the modified gravity effect is minimal primordially, and the scalar field controls mainly the dynamics with a rescaled Ricci scalar gravity. However $f(R)$ gravity dominates at late-times, where it controls the dynamics, synergistically with the scalar field.

Causal Limit of Neutron Star Maximum Mass in $f(R)$ Gravity in View of GW190814

We investigate the causal limit of maximum mass for stars in the framework of$f(R)$ gravity. We choose a causal equation of state, with variable speed of sound, and with the transition density and pressure corresponding to the SLy equation of state. The transition density is chosen to be equal to twice the saturation density $ρ_t\sim 2ρ_0$, and also the analysis is performed for the transition density, chosen to be equal to the saturation density $ρ_t\sim ρ_0$. We examine numerically the combined effect of the stiff causal equation of state and of the sound speed on the maximum mass of static neutron stars, in the context of Jordan frame of $f(R)$ gravity. This yields the most extreme upper bound for neutron star masses in the context of extended gravity. As we will evince for the case of $R^2$ model, the upper causal mass limit lies within, but not deeply in, the mass-gap region, and is marginally the same with the general relativistic causal maximum mass, indicating that the $\sim 3M_{\odot}$ general relativistic limit is respected. In view of the modified gravity perspective for the secondary component of the GW190814 event, we also discuss the strange star possibility. Using several well established facts for neutron star physics and the Occam's razor approach, although the strange star is exciting, for the moment, it remains a possibility for describing the secondary component of GW190814. We underpin the fact that the secondary component of the compact binary GW190814 is probably a neutron star, a black hole or even a rapidly rotating neutron star, but not a strange star. We also discuss, in general, the potential role of the extended gravity description for the binary merging.

Neutron Stars Phenomenology with Scalar-tensor Inflationary Attractors

In this work we shall study the implications of a subclass of $E$-models cosmological attractors, namely of $a$-attractors, on hydrodynamically stable slowly rotating neutron stars. Specifically, we shall present the Jordan frame theory of the $a$-attractors, and by using a conformal transformation we shall derive the Einstein frame theory. We discuss the inflationary context of $a$-attractors in order to specify the allowed range of values for the free parameters of the model based on the latest cosmic-microwave-background-based Planck 2018 data. Accordingly, using the notation and physical units frequently used in theoretical astrophysics contexts, we shall derive the Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff equations in the Einstein frame. Assuming a piecewise polytropic equation of state, the lowest density part of which shall be chosen to be the WFF1, or APR or the SLy EoS, we numerically solve the Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff equations using a double shooting python-based "LSODA" numerical code. The resulting picture depends on the value of the parameter $a$ characterizing the $a$-attractors. As we show, for large values of $a$, which do not produce a viable inflationary era, the $M-R$ graphs are nearly identical to the general relativistic result, and these two are discriminated at large central densities values. Also, for large $a$-values, the WFF1 equation of state is excluded, due to the GW170817 constraints. In addition, the small $a$ cases produce larger masses and radii compared to the general relativistic case and are compatible with the GW170817 constraints on the radii of neutron stars. Our results indicate deep and not yet completely understood connections between non-minimal inflationary attractors and neutron stars phenomenology in scalar-tensor theory.

Late-Time Cosmology of Scalar-Coupled $f(R, \mathcal{G})$ Gravity

In this work by using a numerical analysis, we investigate in a quantitative way the late-time dynamics of scalar coupled $f(R,\mathcal{G})$ gravity. Particularly, we consider a Gauss-Bonnet term coupled to the scalar field coupling function $ξ(ϕ)$, and we study three types of models, one with $f(R)$ terms that are known to provide a viable late-time phenomenology, and two Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet types of models. Our aim is to write the Friedmann equation in terms of appropriate statefinder quantities frequently used in the literature, and we numerically solve it by using physically motivated initial conditions. In the case that $f(R)$ gravity terms are present, the contribution of the Gauss-Bonnet related terms is minor, as we actually expected. This result is robust against changes in the initial conditions of the scalar field, and the reason is the dominating parts of the $f(R)$ gravity sector at late times. In the Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet type of models, we examine two distinct scenarios, firstly by choosing freely the scalar potential and the scalar Gauss-Bonnet coupling $ξ(ϕ)$, in which case the resulting phenomenology is compatible with the latest Planck data and mimics the $Λ$-Cold-Dark-Matter model. In the second case, since there is no fundamental particle physics reason for the graviton to change its mass, we assume that primordially the tensor perturbations propagate with the speed equal to that of light's, and thus this constraint restricts the functional form of the scalar coupling function $ξ(ϕ)$, which must satisfy the differential equation $\ddotξ=H\dotξ$.

Unifying of Inflation with Early and Late Dark Energy Epochs in Axion $F(R)$ Gravity

We provide a theoretical model of $F(R)$ gravity in which it is possible to describe in a unified way inflation, an early and a late dark energy era, in the presence of a light axion particle which plays the role of the dark matter component of the Universe. Particularly, the early-time phenomenology is dominated by an $R^2$ term, while the presence of the other terms $f(R)$ ensure the occurrence of the early and late-time dark energy eras. The inflationary phenomenology is compatible with the Planck 2018 data for inflation, while the late-time dark energy era is compatible with the Planck 2018 constraints on the cosmological parameters. Also, the model exhibits an early dark energy era, at $z\sim 2.5$ approximately, followed by a deceleration era, which starts at approximately $z\sim 1.5$, which in turn is followed by a late-time dark energy era for redshifts $z\sim 0.5$, which lasts for approximately 5 billion years up to present time. A notable feature of our model is that the dark energy era is free from dark energy oscillations, at least in the redshift interval $z=[0,10]$. In addition, we also discuss several features related to observational data at $z\sim 2.34$, at which redshift intricate observational data exist in the literature. Moreover, the numerical code for the dark energy phenomenology, written in Python 3, is presented in the end of the article. Finally, the model has another interesting characteristic, a sudden jump of the value of the Hubble rate in the redshift interval $z\sim [2,2.6]$ where its value suddenly increases and then decreases until $z\sim 0$.

Non-minimally Coupled Scalar $k$-Inflation Dynamics

In this work we shall study $k$-inflation theories with non-minimal coupling of the scalar field to gravity, in the presence of only a higher order kinetic term of the form $\sim \mathrm{const}\times X^μ$, with $X=\frac{1}{2}\partial_μϕ\partial^μϕ$. The study will be focused in the cases where a scalar potential is included or is absent, and the evolution of the scalar field will be assumed to satisfy the slow-roll or the constant-roll condition. In the case of the slow-roll models with scalar potential, we shall calculate the slow-roll indices, and the corresponding observational indices of the theory, and we demonstrate that the resulting theory is compatible with the latest Planck data. The same results are obtained in the constant-roll case, at least in the presence of a scalar potential. In the case that models without potential are considered, the results are less appealing since these are strongly model dependent, and at least for a power-law choice of the non-minimal coupling, the theory is non-viable. Finally, due to the fact that the scalar and tensor power spectra are conformal invariant quantities, we argue that the Einstein frame counterpart of the non-minimal $k$-inflation models with scalar potential, can be a viable theory, due to the conformal invariance of the observational indices. The Einstein frame theory is more involved and thus more difficult to work with it analytically, so one implication of our work is that we provide evidence for the viability of another class of $k$-inflation models.

$k$-Inflation-corrected Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet Gravity with Massless Primordial Gravitons

In the present paper, we study the inflationary phenomenology of a $k$-inflation corrected Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory. Non-canonical kinetic terms are known for producing Jean instabilities or superluminal sound wave velocities in the aforementioned era, but we demonstrate in this work that by adding Gauss-Bonnet string corrections and assuming that the non-canonical kinetic term $ωX^γ$ is in quadratic, one can obtain a ghost free description. Demanding compatibility with the recent GW170817 event forces one to accept that the relation $\ddotξ=H\dotξ$ for the scalar coupling function $ξ(ϕ)$. As a result, the scalar functions of the theory are revealed to be interconnected and by assuming a specific form for one of them, specifies immediately the other. Here, we shall assume that the scalar potential is directly derivable from the equations of motion, once the Gauss-Bonnet coupling is appropriately chosen, but obviously the opposite is feasible as well. As a result, each term entering the equations of motion, can be written in terms of the scalar field and a relatively tractable phenomenology is produced. For quadratic kinetic terms, the resulting scalar potential is quite elegant functionally. Different exponents, which lead to either a more perplexed solution for the scalar potential, are still a possibility which was not further studied. We also discuss in brief the non-Gaussianities issue under the slow-roll and constant-roll conditions holding true, and we demonstrate that the predicted amount of non-Gaussianities is significantly enhanced in comparison to the $k$-inflation free Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory.

Reviving non-Minimal Horndeski-like Theories after GW170817: Kinetic Coupling Corrected Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet Inflation

After the recent GW170817 event of the two neutron stars merging, many string corrected cosmological theories confronted the non-viability peril. This was due to the fact that most of these theories produce massive gravitons primordially. Among these theories were the ones containing a non-minimal kinetic coupling correction term in the Lagrangian, which belong to a subclass of Horndeski theories. In this work we demonstrate how these theories may be revived and we show how these theories can produce primordial gravitational waves with speed $c_T^2=1$ in natural units, thus complying with the GW170817 event. As we show, if the gravitational action of an Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory also contains a kinetic coupling of the form $\sim ξ(ϕ) G^{μν}\partial_μϕ\partial_νϕ$, the condition of having primordial massless gravitons, or equivalently primordial gravitational waves with speed $c_T^2=1$ in natural units, results to certain conditions on the scalar field dependent coupling function of the Gauss-Bonnet term, which is also the non-minimal coupling of the kinetic coupling. We extensively study the phenomenological implications of such a theory focusing on the inflationary era, by only assuming slow-roll dynamics for the scalar field. Accordingly, we briefly study the case that the scalar field evolves in a constant-roll way. By using some illustrative examples, we demonstrate that the viability of the theoretical framework at hand may easily be achieved. Also, theories containing terms of the form $\sim ξ(ϕ)\Boxϕg^{μν}\partial_μϕ\partial_νϕ$ and $\sim ξ(ϕ)\left(g^{μν}\partial_μϕ\partial_νϕ\right)^2$ also lead to the same gravitational wave speed as the theory we shall study in this paper, so this covers a larger class of Horndeski theories.
