On highly eccentric stellar trajectories interacting with a self-gravitating disc in Sgr A*

We propose that Kozai's phenomenon is responsible for the long-term evolution of stellar orbits near a supermassive black hole. We pursue the idea that this process may be driven by a fossil accretion disc in the centre of our Galaxy, causing the gradual orbital decay of stellar trajectories, while setting some stars on highly elliptic orbits. We evolve model orbits that undergo repetitive transitions across the disc over the period of ~10^7 years. We assume that the disc mass is small compared to the central black hole, and its gravitational field comparatively weak, yet non-zero, and we set the present values of orbital parameters of the model star consistent with those reported for the S2 star in Sagittarius A*. We show how a model trajectory decays and circularizes, but at some point the mean eccentricity is substantially increased by Kozai's resonance. In consequence the orbital decay of highly eccentric orbits is accelerated. A combination of an axially symmetric gravitational field and dissipative environment can provide a mechanism explaining the origin of stars on highly eccentric orbits tightly bound to the central black hole. In the context of other S-stars, we can conclude that an acceptable mass of the disc (i.e., M_d<=1 percent of the black hole mass) is compatible with their surprisingly young age and small pericentre distances, provided these stars were formed at r<=10^5 gravitational radii.

Polarization signatures of strong gravity in AGN accretion discs

The effects of strong gravity on the polarization of the Compton reflection from an X-ray illuminated accretion disc are studied. The gravitational field of a rotating black hole influences Stokes parameters of the radiation along the propagation to a distant observer. Assuming the lamp-post model, the degree and the angle of polarization are examined as functions of the observer's inclination angle, of the height of the primary source and of the inner radius of the disc emitting region. It is shown that polarimetry can provide essential information on the properties of black holes sources, and it is argued that time variation of the polarization angle is a strong signature of general relativity effects. The expected polarization degree and angle should be detectable by new generation polarimeters, like the one planned for the Xeus mission.

Of NBOs and kHz QPOs: a low-frequency modulation in resonant oscillations of relativistic accretion disks

The origin of quasi periodic modulations of flux in the kilohertz range (kHz QPOs), observed in low-mass X-ray binaries, is usually assumed to be physically distinct from that of the ``normal branch oscillations'' (NBOs) in the Z-sources. We show that a low-frequency modulation of the kHz QPOs is a natural consequence of the non-linear relativistic resonance suggested previously to explain the properties of the high-frequency twin peaks. The theoretical results discussed here are reminiscent of the 6 Hz variations of frequency and amplitude of the kHz QPOs reported by Yu, van der Klis and Jonker (2001).

Star-disc interactions in a galactic centre and oblateness of the inner stellar cluster

Structure of a quasi-stationary stellar cluster is modelled assuming that it is embedded in the gravitational field of a super-massive black hole. Gradual orbital decay of stellar trajectories is caused by the dissipative interaction with an accretion disc. Gravitational field of the disc is constructed and its effect on the cluster structure is taken into account as an axially symmetric perturbation. Attention is focused on a circumnuclear region (r<10^4 gravitational radii) where the effects of the central black hole and the disc dominate over the influence of an outer galaxy. It is shown how the stellar system becomes gradually flattened towards the disc plane. For certain combinations of the model parameters, a toroidal structure is formed by a fraction of stars. Growing anisotropy of stellar velocities as well as their segregation occur. The mass function of the inner cluster is modified and it progressively departs from the asymptotic form assumed in the outer cluster. A new stationary distribution can be characterized in terms of velocity dispersion of the stellar sample in the central region of the modified cluster.

An XSPEC model to explore spectral features from black-hole sources

We report on a new general relativistic computational model enhancing, in various respects, the capability of presently available tools for fitting spectra of X-ray sources. The new model is intended for spectral analysis of black-hole accretion discs. Our approach is flexible enough to allow easy modifications of intrinsic emissivity profiles. Axial symmetry is not assumed, although it can be imposed in order to reduce computational cost of data fitting. The main current application of our code is within the XSPEC data-fitting package, however, its applicability goes beyond that: the code can be compiled in a stand-alone mode, capable of examining time-variable spectral features and doing polarimetry of sources in the strong-gravity regime. Basic features of our approach are described in a separate paper (Dovciak, Karas & Yaqoob 2004). Here we illustrate some of its applications in more detail. We concentrate ourselves on various aspects of line emission and Compton reflection, including the current implementation of the lamp-post model as an example of a more complicated form of intrinsic emissivity.

The upper kHz QPO: a gravitationally lensed vertical oscillation

We show that a luminous torus in the Schwarzschild metric oscillating along its own axis gives rise to a periodically varying flux of radiation, even though the source of radiation is steady and perfectly axisymmetric. This implies that the simplest oscillation mode in an accretion flow, axisymmetric up-and-down motion at the meridional epicyclic frequency, may be directly observable when it occurs in the inner parts of accretion flow around neutron stars and black holes. The high-frequency modulations of the X-ray flux observed in low-mass X-ray binaries at two frequencies (twin kHz QPOs) could then be a signature of strong gravity both because radial and meridional oscillations have different frequencies in non-Newtonian gravity, and because strong gravitational deflection of light rays causes the flux of radiation to be modulated at the higher frequency.

An extended scheme for fitting X-ray data with accretion disk spectra in the strong gravity regime

Accreting black holes are believed to emit X-rays which then mediate information about strong gravity in the vicinity of the emission region. We report on a set of new routines for the Xspec package for analysing X-ray spectra of black-hole accretion disks. The new computational tool significantly extends the capabilities of the currently available fitting procedures that include the effects of strong gravity, and allows one to systematically explore the constraints on more model parameters than previously possible (for example black-hole angular momentum). Moreover, axial symmetry of the disk intrinsic emissivity is not assumed, although it can be imposed to speed up the computations. The new routines can be used also as a stand-alone and flexible code with the capability of handling time-resolved spectra in the regime of strong gravity. We have used the new code to analyse the mean X-ray spectrum from the long XMM--Newton 2001 campaign of the Seyfert 1 galaxy MCG--6-30-15. Consistent with previous findings, we obtained a good fit to the broad Fe K line profile for a radial line intrinsic emissivity law in the disk which is not a simple power law, and for near maximal value of black hole angular momentum. However, equally good fits can be obtained also for small values of the black hole angular momentum. The code has been developed with the aim of allowing precise modelling of relativistic effects. Although we find that current data cannot constrain the parameters of black-hole/accretion disk system well, the approach allows, for a given source or situation, detailed investigations of what features of the data future studies should be focused on in order to achieve the goal of uniquely isolating the parameters of such systems.

The structure and radiation spectra of illuminated accretion disks in AGN. II. Flare/spot model of X-ray variability

We discuss a model of X-ray variability of active galactic nuclei (AGN). We consider multiple spots which originate on the surface of an accretion disk following intense irradiation by coronal flares. The spots move with the disk around the central black hole and eventually decay while new spots continuously emerge. We construct time sequences of the spectra of the spotted disk and compute the corresponding energy-dependent fractional variability amplitude. We explore the dependence on the disk inclination and other model parameters. AGN seen at higher inclination with respect to the observer, such as Seyfert 2 galaxies, are expected to have fractional variability amplitude of the direct emission by a factor of a few higher than objects seen face on, such as the Seyfert 1s.

Relativistic spectral features from X-ray illuminated spots and the measure of the black hole mass in AGN

Narrow spectral features in the 5--6 keV range were recently discovered in the X-ray spectra of a few active galactic nuclei. We discuss the possibility that these features are due to localized spots which occur on the surface of an accretion disc following its illumination by flares. We present detailed line profiles as a function of orbital phase of the spot and its radial distance from a central black hole. Comparison of these computed profiles with observed features can help to estimate parameters of the system. In principle this method can provide a powerful tool to measure the mass of super-massive black holes in active galactic nuclei. By comparing our simulations with the Chandra and XMM-Newton results, we show, however, that spectra from present generation X-ray satellites are not of good enough quality to fully exploit the method and determine the black hole mass with sufficient accuracy. This task has to be deferred to future missions with high throughput and high energy resolution, such as Constellation-X and Xeus.

Gravitating discs around black holes

Fluid discs and tori around black holes are discussed within different approaches and with the emphasis on the role of disc gravity. First reviewed are the prospects of investigating the gravitational field of a black hole--disc system by analytical solutions of stationary, axially symmetric Einstein's equations. Then, more detailed considerations are focused to middle and outer parts of extended disc-like configurations where relativistic effects are small and the Newtonian description is adequate. Within general relativity, only a static case has been analysed in detail. Results are often very inspiring, however, simplifying assumptions must be imposed: ad hoc profiles of the disc density are commonly assumed and the effects of frame-dragging and completely lacking. Astrophysical discs (e.g. accretion discs in active galactic nuclei) typically extend far beyond the relativistic domain and are fairly diluted. However, self-gravity is still essential for their structure and evolution, as well as for their radiation emission and the impact on the environment around. For example, a nuclear star cluster in a galactic centre may bear various imprints of mutual star--disc interactions, which can be recognised in observational properties, such as the relation between the central mass and stellar velocity dispersion.

Non-linear resonance in nearly geodesic motion in low-mass X-ray binaries

We have explored the ideas that parametric resonance affects nearly geodesic motion around a black hole or a neutron star, and that it may be relevant to the high frequency (twin) quasi-periodic oscillations occurring in some low-mass X-ray binaries. We have assumed the particles or fluid elements of an accretion disc to be subject to an isotropic perturbation of a hypothetical but rather general form. We find that the parametric resonance is indeed excited close to the radius where epicyclic frequencies of radial and meridional oscillations are in a 2:3 ratio. The location and frequencies of the highest amplitude excitation vary with the strength of the perturbation. These results agree with actual frequency ratios of twin kHz QPOs that have been reported in some black hole candidates, and they may be consistent also with correlation of the twin peaks in Sco X-1.

An ADAF in the Kerr metric: propagation of a wave pattern

Time evolution of an advection-dominated accretion flow is explored in terms of relativistic fluid equations. An axially symmetric, vertically averaged mean flow is constructed and then perturbed. An axisymmetric pattern is followed as it propagates in the form of a wave towards the horizon of a rotating (Kerr) black hole. Several assumptions are relaxed in comparison with previous works (Manmoto et al. 1996).

Poincare ball embeddings of the optical geometry

It is shown that optical geometry of the Reissner-Nordstrom exterior metric can be embedded in a hyperbolic space all the way down to its outer horizon. The adopted embedding procedure removes a breakdown of flat-space embeddings which occurs outside the horizon, at and below the Buchdahl-Bondi limit (R/M=9/4 in the Schwarzschild case). In particular, the horizon can be captured in the optical geometry embedding diagram. Moreover, by using the compact Poincare ball representation of the hyperbolic space, the embedding diagram can cover the whole extent of radius from spatial infinity down to the horizon. Attention is drawn to advantages of such embeddings in an appropriately curved space: this approach gives compact embeddings and it distinguishes clearly the case of an extremal black hole from a non-extremal one in terms of topology of the embedded horizon.

Evidence for a relativistic iron line in GRS 1915+105

We report on the discovery of a relativistic iron Kαfluorescent emission line in the BeppoSAX spectrum of the microquasar GRS 1915+105, taken on April 19, 1998, when the line was unusually intense. The feature is broad and skewed, clearly indicating emission from the innermost regions of the accretion disc. The inner emitting orbit is larger than the innermost stable orbit, even in Schwarzschild metric: thus, a non-zero BH spin is not required by these data.

Orbital decay of satellites crossing an accretion disc

Motion of stellar-mass satellites is studied around a massive compact body which is surrounded by a gaseous slab of a stationary accretion disc. The satellites suffer an orbital decay due to hydrodynamical interaction with the disc medium (transitions across the disc, gap opening in the disc, density waves) and gravitational radiation. Arbitrary orbital eccentricities and inclinations are considered, and it is observed how the competing effects depend on the parameters of the model, namely, the mass and compactness of the orbiters, the osculating elements of their trajectories, and surface density of the disc. These effects have a visible impact on the satellites long-term motion, and they can produce observational consequences with respect to galactic central clusters. It is shown that the satellite-disc collisions do not impose serious restrictions on the results of gravitational wave experiments if the disc medium is diluted and the orbiter is compact but they are important in the case of environments with relatively high density. We thus concentrate on application to accretion flows in which the density is not negligible. We discuss the expected quasi-stationary structure of the cluster that is established on sub-parsec scales within the sphere of gravitational influence of the central object. Relevant to this region, we give the power-law slopes defining the radial profile of modified clusters and we show that their values are determined by satellite interaction with the accretion flow rather than their initial distribution.

Variable line profiles due to non-axisymmetric patterns in an accretion disc around a rotating black hole

We have explored spectral line profiles due to spiral patterns in accretion discs around black holes. A parametrization was employed for the shape and emissivity of spiral waves, which can be produced by non-axisymmetric perturbations affecting the disc density and ionization structure. The effects of the light-travel time, energy shift, and gravitational focusing near to a rotating black hole were taken into account. A high-resolution ray-tracing code was used to follow the time variations of the synthetic line profile. A variety of expected spectral features were examined and the scheme applied to a broad iron line observed in MCG-6-30-15.

A cloud model of active galactic nuclei: the iron K-alpha line diagnostics

The origin and the profile of the iron K-alpha line from active galactic nuclei is being studied. The model with a quasi-spherical distribution of clouds around a compact galactic nucleus is explored in which the intrinsic spectral feature around 6-7 keV is substantially affected by Comptonization of primary X-rays. The predicted spectral profiles are influenced mainly by motion of the clouds in strong gravitational field of the centre, and by orientation of the source with respect to the observer. The case of the Seyfert galaxy MCG-6-30-15 is examined in more detail and free parameters of the model are determined. A robust result is obtained: acceptable fits to the observed profile correspond to the spherical distribution of the clouds with strong self-obscuration effects and with rather high value of ionization parameter. This is a different situation from that considered in the model of a cold illuminated disc. Nevertheless, geometrically flat (disc-type) configurations are not rejected.
