Chemical equilibration of U(1) charged particles in a thermal environment

We discuss chemical equilibration of particles carrying non-vanishing quantum numbers related with U(1) internal symmetry. We construct the transport equation for the time evolution of particle multiplicities and their probability functions. The solution of these equations is obtained in different limiting cases. It is argued that a U(1) charged particles, dependent on thermal conditions inside a fireball, approaches different equilibrium limits. The differences between kinetics of abundantly and rarely produced particles are explained.

Fluctuations of rare particles as a measure of chemical equilibration

We calculate the time evolution of fluctuations for rare particles such as e.g. kaons in 1 AGeV or charmonium in 200 AGeV heavy ion collisions. We find that these fluctuations are a very sensitive probe of the degree of chemical equilibration reached in these collisions. Furthermore, measuring the second factorial moment the size of the initial population can be determined.

Event-by-event fluctuations and the QGP

We discuss the physics underlying event-by-event fluctuations in relativistic heavy ion collisions. We will emphasize how the fluctuations of particle ratios can be utilized to explore the properties of the matter created in these collisions. In particular, we will argue that the fluctutions of the ratio of positively over negatively charged particles may serve as a unique signature for the Quark Gluon Plasma.

Kinetic equation with exact charge conservation

We formulate the kinetic master equation describing the production of charged particles which are created or destroyed only in pairs due to the conservation of their Abelian charge. Our equation applies to arbitrary particle multiplicities and reproduces the equilibrium results for both canonical (rare particles) and grand canonical (abundant particles) systems. For canonical systems, the equilibrium multiplicity is much lower and the relaxation time is much shorter than the naive extrapolation from the grand canonical ensemble results. Implications for particle chemical equilibration in heavy-ion collisions are discussed.

Charged Particle Ratio Fluctuation as a Signal for QGP

In this letter we argue that the event-by-event fluctuations of the ratio of the positively charged and the negatively charged pions provides a signal of quark-gluon plasma. The fact that quarks carry fractional charges is ultimately responsible for this distinct signal.

Event-by-event fluctuations of the charged particle ratio from non-equilibrium transport theory

The event by event fluctuations of the ratio of positively to negatively charged hadrons are predicted within the UrQMD model. Corrections for finite acceptance and finite net charge are derived. These corrections are relevant to compare experimental data and transport model results to previous predictions. The calculated fluctuations at RHIC and SPS energies are shown to be compatible with a hadron gas. Thus, deviating by a factor of 3 from the predictions for a thermalized quark-gluon plasma.

Baryonic contributions to the dilepton spectra in relativistic heavy ion collisions

We investigate the baryonic contributions to the dilepton yield in high energy heavy ion collisions within the context of a transport model. The relative contribution of the baryonic and mesonic sources are examined. It is observed that most dominant among the baryonic channels is the decay of N*(1520) and mostly confined in the region below the rho peak. In a transport theory implementation we find the baryonic contribution to the lepton pair yield to be small.

Dilepton Production and Chiral Symmetry

We discuss how dilepton production is related to chiral symmetry and its restoration. We then analyse presently available data by the CERES collaboration in this context. We find that the present data do not support any conclusions concerning the restoration of chiral symmetry. We finally provide a prediction for the dilepton spectrum for the just completed low energy (40 GeV) run at the SPS.

Dileptons from transport and hydrodynamical models

Transport and hydrodynamical models used to describe the expansion stage of a heavy-ion collision at the CERN SPS give different dilepton spectrum even if they are tuned to reproduce the observed hadron spectra. To understand the origin of this difference we compare the dilepton emission from transport and hydrodynamical models using similar initial states in both models. We find that the requirement of pion number conservation in a hydrodynamical model does not change the dilepton emission. Also the mass distribution from the transport model indicates faster cooling and longer lifetime of the fireball.

Medium Modified Cross Sections, Temperature and Finite Momentum Effects for Antikaon Production in Heavy-Ion Collisions

The medium modifications of antikaons in dense matter are studied in a coupled channel calculation for scenarios more closely related to the environment encountered in heavy-ion collisions. We find that the optical potential of the antikaons turns repulsive or is drastically reduced for finite momenta or finite temperature. Hence, the antikaon mass does not decrease substantially in heavy-ion collisions to provide an explanation for the observed antikaon production rates at threshold. We demonstrate that the in-medium production cross section of antikaons via pions and Sigma hyperons is remarkably enhanced up to an order of magnitude. The effect of in medium correction on the resulting kaon spectra is studied within a transport model. We find that both in medium correction lead to about the same enhancement of the spectrum. However, once the temperature dependence is taken into account no enhancement is found.

Fluctuations of particle ratios and the abundance of hadronic resonances

In this letter we will argue that the event-by-event fluctuations of the ratio of positively over negatively charged pions provides a measurements of the number of rho and omega mesons right after hadronization. This finding can be utilized to put the hypothesis of chemical equilibration in relativistic heavy ion collisions to a test.

Event-by-event fluctuations in collective quantities

We discuss an event-by-event fluctuation analysis of particle production in heavy ion collisions. We compare different approaches to the evaluation of the event-by-event dynamical fluctuations in quantities defined on groups of particles, such quantities as mean transverse momentum, transverse momentum spectra slope, strength of anisotropic flow, etc.. The direct computation of the dynamical fluctuations and the sub-event method are discussed in more detail. We also show how the fluctuation in different variables can be related to each other.

Production of Dileptons in Heavy Ion Collisions at SPS-Energies

In this contribution we will discuss the production of low mass dileptons in SPS-energy heavy ion collisions. We briefly review the current theoretical situation before we turn to the analysis of the recent data for Pb+Au. We also will discuss the role of baryons as a source for dileptons.

Event by Event fluctuations and Inclusive Distribution

Event-by-event observables are compared with conventional inclusive measurements. We find that moments of event-by-event fluctuations are closely related to inclusive correlation functions. Implications for upcomming heavy ion experiments are discussed.

Bremsstrahlung Dileptons in Ultra-relativistic Heavy Ion Collisions

We consider production of dilepton pairs through coherent electro-magnetic radiation during nuclear collisions. We show that the number of pairs produced through bremsstrahlung is about two orders of magnitude smaller than the yield measured by the CERES collaboration. Therefore, coherent bremsstrahlung can be ruled out as an explanation for the observed enhancement of low mass dileptons in CERES and HELIOS.

Dilepton from Disoriented Chiral Condensates

Disoriented chiral condensates are manifested as long wavelength pionic oscillations and their interaction with the thermal environment can be a significant source of dileptons. We calculate the yield of such dilepton production within the linear sigma model and illustrate the basic features of the dilepton spectrum in a schematic model. We find that the dilepton yield with invariant mass near and below $2m_π$ due to the soft pion modes can be up to two orders of magnitude larger than the corresponding equilibrium yield. We conclude with a discussion on how this enhancement can be detected by present dilepton experiments.

Branching ratio change in K- absorption at rest and the nature of the Lambda(1405)

We investigate in-medium corrections to the branching ratio in K- absorption at rest and their effect on the (positively and negatively) charged pion spectrum. The in-medium corrections are due to Pauli blocking, which arises if the Lambda(1405) is assumed to be a $\bar{K}$-nucleon bound state and leads to a density and momentum dependent mass shift of the Lambda(1405). Requiring that the optical potential as well as the branching ratio are derived from the same elementary T-matrix, we find that the in-medium corrected, density dependent T-matrix gives a better description of the K- absorption reaction than the free, density-independent one. This result suggests that the dominant component of the Lambda(1405) wave function is the $\bar{K}N$ bound state.

Dileptons from Disoriented Chiral Condensates

Disoriented chiral condensates or long wavelength pionic oscillations and their interaction with the thermal environment can be a significant source of dileptons. We calculate the yield of such dilepton production within the linear sigma model, both in a quantal mean-field treatment and in a semi-classical approximation. We then illustrate the basic features of the dilepton spectrum in a schematic model. We find that dilepton yield with invariant mass near and below $2m_π$ due to the soft pion modes can be up to two orders of magnitude larger than the corresponding equilibrium yield.
