Tensor Correlations Measured in 3He(e,e'pp)n

We have measured the 3He(e,e'pp)n reaction at an incident energy of 4.7 GeV over a wide kinematic range. We identified spectator correlated pp and pn nucleon pairs using kinematic cuts and measured their relative and total momentum distributions. This is the first measurement of the ratio of pp to pn pairs as a function of pair total momentum, $p_{tot}$. For pair relative momenta between 0.3 and 0.5 GeV/c, the ratio is very small at low $p_{tot}$ and rises to approximately 0.5 at large $p_{tot}$. This shows the dominance of tensor over central correlations at this relative momentum.

Measurement of Single and Double Spin Asymmetries in Deep Inelastic Pion Electroproduction with a Longitudinally Polarized Target

We report the first measurement of the transverse momentum dependence of double spin asymmetries in semi-inclusive production of pions in deep inelastic scattering off the longitudinally polarized proton. Data have been obtained using a polarized electron beam of 5.7 GeV with the CLAS detector at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (JLab). A significant non-zero $\sin2ϕ$ single spin asymmetry was also observed for the first time indicating strong spin-orbit correlations for transversely polarized quarks in the longitudinally polarized proton. The azimuthal modulations of single spin asymmetries have been measured over a wide kinematic range.

Neutral Pion Electroproduction in the Resonance Region at High $Q^2$

The process $ep \to e^{\prime}p^{\prime}π^0$ has been measured at $Q^2$ = 6.4 and 7.7 GeV/c$^2$)$^2$ in Jefferson Lab's Hall C. Unpolarized differential cross sections are reported in the virtual photon-proton center of mass frame considering the process $γ^{\ast}p \to p^{\prime}π^0$. Various details relating to the background subtractions, radiative corrections and systematic errors are discussed. The usefulness of the data with regard to the measurement of the electromagnetic properties of the well known $Δ(1232)$ resonance is covered in detail. Specifically considered are the electromagnetic and scalar-magnetic ratios $R_{EM}$ and $R_{SM}$ along with the magnetic transition form factor $G_M^{\ast}$. It is found that the rapid fall off of the $Δ(1232)$ contribution continues into this region of momentum transfer and that other resonances

Electroproduction of Eta Mesons in the S11(1535) Resonance Region at High Momentum Transfer

The differential cross-section for the process p(e,e'p)eta has been measured at Q2 ~ 5.7 and 7.0 (GeV/c)2 for centre-of-mass energies from threshold to 1.8 GeV, encompassing the S11(1535) resonance, which dominates the channel. This is the highest momentum transfer measurement of this exclusive process to date. The helicity-conserving transition amplitude A_1/2, for the production of the S11(1535) resonance, is extracted from the data. Within the limited Q2 now measured, this quantity appears to begin scaling as 1/Q3 - a predicted, but not definitive, signal of the dominance of perturbative QCD, at Q2 ~ 5 (GeV/c)2.

Nuclear Targets for a Precision Measurement of the Neutral Pion Radiative Width

A technique is presented for precision measurements of the area densities, density * T, of approximately 5% radiation length carbon and 208Pb targets used in an experiment at Jefferson Laboratory to measure the neutral pion radiative width. The precision obtained in the area density for the carbon target is +/- 0.050%, and that obtained for the lead target through an x-ray attenuation technique is +/- 0.43%.

Transverse momentum dependence of semi-inclusive pion production

Cross sections for semi-inclusive electroproduction of charged pions ($π^{\pm}$) from both proton and deuteron targets were measured for $0.2<x<0.5$, $2<Q^2<4$ GeV$^2$, $0.3<z<1$, and $P_t^2<0.2$ GeV$^2$. For $P_t<0.1$ GeV, we find the azimuthal dependence to be small, as expected theoretically. For both $π^+$ and $π^-$, the $P_t$ dependence from the deuteron is found to be slightly weaker than from the proton. In the context of a simple model, this implies that the initial transverse momenta width of $d$ quarks is larger than for $u$ quarks and, contrary to expectations, the transverse momentum width of the favored fragmentation function is larger than the unfavored one.

Deeply Virtual Pseudoscalar Meson Production with CLAS

Deeply virtual meson scattering cross sections and asymmetries for the pi^0 and eta exclusive electroproduction in a very wide kinematic range of Q^2, t and x_B have been measured with CLAS (JLab). Initial analysis is already showing remarkable results. These data will help us to better understand the transition from soft to hard mechanisms.

Cascade production in the reactions gamma p --> K+ K+ (X) and gamma p --> K^+ K^+ pi- (X)

Photoproduction of the cascade resonances has been investigated in the reactions $γp \to K^+ K^+ (X)$ and $γp \to K^+ K^+ π^- (X)$. The mass split of the $Ξ$ doublet is measured to be $5.4\pm 1.8$ MeV/c$^2$, consistent with existing measurements. The differential (total) cross sections for the $Ξ^{-}$ have been determined for photon beam energies from 2.75 to 3.85 (4.75) GeV, and are consistent with a possible production mechanism of $Y^*\to K^+Ξ^-$ through a $t$-channel process. The reaction $γp \to K^+ K^+ π^-[Ξ^0]$ has also been investigated in search of excited cascade resonances. No significant signal of excited cascade states other than the $Ξ^-(1530)$ is observed. The cross section results of the $Ξ^-(1530)$ have also been obtained for photon beam energies from 3.35 to 4.75 GeV.

Search for the $Θ^+$ pentaquark in the reactions $γp \to \bar K^0K^+n$ and $γp \to \bar K^0K^0p$

The exclusive reactions $γp \to \bar K^0 K^+ n$ and $γp \to \bar K^0 K^0 p$ have been studied in the photon energy range 1.6--3.8 GeV, searching for evidence of the exotic baryon $Θ^+(1540)$ in the decays $Θ^+\to nK^+$ and $Θ^+\to p K^0$. Data were collected with the CLAS detector at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. The integrated luminosity was about 70 pb$^{-1}$. The reactions have been isolated by detecting the $K^+$ and proton directly, the neutral kaon via its decay to $K_S \to π^+ π^-$ and the neutron or neutral kaon via the missing mass technique. The mass and width of known hyperons such as $Σ^+$, $Σ^-$ and $Λ(1116)$ were used as a check of the mass determination accuracy and experimental resolution. Approximately 100,000 $Λ^*(1520)$'s and 150,000 $ϕ$'s were observed in the $\bar K^0 K^+ n$ and $\bar K^0 K^0 p$ final state respectively. No evidence for the $Θ^+$ pentaquark was found in the $nK^+$ or $pK_S$ invariant mass spectra. Upper limits were set on the production cross section of the reaction $γp \to Θ^+ \bar K^0$ as functions of center-of-mass angle, $nK^+$ and $pK_S$ masses. Combining the results of the two reactions, the 95% C.L. upper limit on the total cross section for a resonance peaked at 1540 MeV was found to be 0.7 nb. Within most of the available theoretical models, this corresponds to an upper limit on the $Θ^+$ width, $Γ_{Θ^{+}}$, ranging between 0.01 and 7 MeV.

Search for $Θ^{++}$ Pentaquarks in the Exclusive Reaction $γp\to K^+K^-p$

The reaction $γp \to pK^+K^-$ was studied at Jefferson Lab with photon energies from 1.8 to 3.8 GeV using a tagged photon beam. The goal was to search for a $Θ^{++}$ pentaquark, a narrow doubly charged baryon state having strangeness S=+1 and isospin I=1, in the $pK^+$ invariant mass spectrum. No statistically significant evidence of a $Θ^{++}$ was found. Upper limits on the total and differential production cross section for the reaction $γp \to K^-Θ^{++}$ were obtained in the mass range from 1.5 to 2.0 GeV/c$^2$, with an upper limit of about 0.15 nb, 95% C.L. for a narrow resonance with a mass $M_{Θ^{++}}=1.54$ GeV/c$^2$. This result places a very stringent upper limit on the $Θ^{++}$ width.

The SPHINX spectrometer

The paper describes the SPHINX facility which includes a wide-aperture magnetic spectrometer with scintillation counters and hodoscopes, proportional chambers and drift tubes, multichannel electromagnetic and hadron calorimeters, a guard system, a RICH velocity spectrometer and a hodoscopical threshold Cherenkov detector for the identification of charged secondary particles. The SPHINX spectrometer, in its last modification, had the possibility to record 3000-4000 trigger events per an accelerator burst. The spectrometer was used during the last decade in experiments with the 70GeV proton beam of the IHEP accelerator U-70.

Search for $Θ^+(1540)$ pentaquark in high statistics measurement of $γp \to \bar K^0 K^+ n$ at CLAS

The exclusive reaction $γp \to \bar K^0 K^+ n$ was studied in the photon energy range between 1.6-3.8 GeV searching for evidence of the exotic baryon $Θ^+(1540)\to nK^+$. The decay to $nK^+$ requires the assignment of strangeness $S=+1$ to any observed resonance. Data were collected with the CLAS detector at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 70 $pb^{-1}$. No evidence for the $Θ^+$ pentaquark was found. Upper limits were set on the production cross section as function of center-of-mass angle and $nK^+$ mass. The 95% CL upper limit on the total cross section for a narrow resonance at 1540 MeV was found to be 0.8 nb.

Observation of an Exotic Baryon with S=+1 in Photoproduction from the Proton

The reaction $γp \to π^+K^-K^+n$ was studied at Jefferson Lab using a tagged photon beam with an energy range of 3-5.47 GeV. A narrow baryon state with strangeness S=+1 and mass $M=1555\pm 10$ MeV/c$^2$ was observed in the $nK^+$ invariant mass spectrum. The peak's width is consistent with the CLAS resolution (FWHM=26 MeV/c$^2$), and its statistical significance is 7.8 $\pm$ 1.0 ~$σ$. A baryon with positive strangeness has exotic structure and cannot be described in the framework of the naive constituent quark model. The mass of the observed state is consistent with the mass predicted by a chiral soliton model for the $Θ^+$ baryon. In addition, the $pK^+$ invariant mass distribution was analyzed in the reaction $γp\to K^-K^+p$ with high statistics in search of doubly-charged exotic baryon states. No resonance structures were found in this spectrum.

Pentaquark $Θ^+$ production from the reaction $γp\toπ^+K^-Θ^+$

The cross section for $Θ^+$ production from the reaction $γp\toπ^+K^-Θ^+$, which was observed in the CLAS experiment at the Jefferson National Laboratory, is evaluated in a hadronic model that includes couplings of $Θ^+$ to both $KN$ and $K^*N$. With their coupling constants determined from the empirical $πNN(1710)$ and $ρNN(1710)$ coupling constants using the SU(3) symmetry, the cross section for this reaction has been evaluated by taking $Θ^+$ to have spin 1/2 and isospin 0 but either positive or negative parity. We find that the cross section is 10-15 nb if $Θ^+$ has positive parity as predicted by the chiral soliton model. The cross section is reduced by more than a factor of 10 if $Θ^+$ has negative parity as given by lattice QCD studies. For both parities, the differential distribution peaks at small negative four momentum transfer as expected from the dominating $t$-channel kaon-exchange diagram that involves only the coupling of $Θ^+$ to $KN$.

Evidence for an Exotic Baryon State, Theta+(1540), in Photoproduction Reactions from Protons and Deuterons with CLAS

CLAS photoproduction data on deuterium and hydrogen targets have been analyzed in a search for an exotic baryon state with strangeness S=+1, the Θ^+ (originally named the Z^+). This resonance was predicted recently in theoretical work based on the chiral soliton model as a lowest mass member of an anti-decuplet of 5-quark states. The reaction gamma d --> pK^-K^+n, which requires a final state interaction inside the deuteron, was used in the analysis of deuteron data. In the analysis of proton data, the reaction gamma p --> pi^+K^-K^+n was studied. Evidence for the Θ^+ state is found in both analyses in the invariant mass distribution of the nK^+. Our results are consistent with previously reported results by LEPS/Spring-8 collaboration (Japan), and by the ITEP (Moscow) group.

The SELEX Phototube RICH Detector

In this article, construction, operation, and performance of the RICH detector of Fermilab experiment 781 (SELEX) are described. The detector utilizes a matrix of 2848 phototubes for the photocathode to detect Cherenkov photons generated in a 10m Neon radiator. For the central region an N0 of 104/cm, corresponding to 13.6 hits on a beta=1 ring, was obtained. The ring radius resolution measured is 1.6%.
