Optical Cages

We examine array of metal-mesh frameworks for their wide-band absorption. These take the form of quasi-crystal optical cages. An array of cages tends to focus the incoming radiation within each framework. An array of cage-within-cage funnels the radiation from the outer cage to its inner core even further.

Gradual pressure-induced change in the magnetic structure of the non-collinear antiferromagnet Mn$_3$Ge

By means of powder neutron diffraction we investigate changes in the magnetic structure of the coplanar non-collinear antiferromagnet Mn$_3$Ge caused by an application of hydrostatic pressure up to 5\phantom{ }GPa. At ambient conditions the kagomé layers of Mn atoms in Mn$_3$Ge order in a triangular 120$^{\circ}$ spin structure. Under high pressure the spins acquire a uniform out-of-plane canting, gradually transforming the magnetic texture to a non-coplanar configuration. With increasing pressure the canted structure fully transforms into the collinear ferromagnetic one. We observed that magnetic order is accompanied by a noticeable magnetoelastic effect, namely, spontaneous magnetostriction. The latter induces an in-plane magnetostrain of the hexagonal unit cell at ambient pressure and flips to an out-of-plane strain at high pressures in accordance with the change of the magnetic structure.

Singlet ground state in the spin-$1/2$ weakly coupled dimer compound NH$_4$[(V$_2$O$_3$)$_2$(4,4$^\prime$-$bpy$)$_2$(H$_2$PO$_4$)(PO$_4$)$_2$]$\cdot$0.5H$_2$O

We present the synthesis and a detailed investigation of structural and magnetic properties of polycrystalline NH$_4$[(V$_2$O$_3$)$_2$(4,4$^\prime$-$bpy$)$_2$(H$_2$PO$_4$)(PO$_4$)$_2$]$\cdot$0.5H$_2$O by means of x-ray diffraction, magnetic susceptibility, electron spin resonance, and $^{31}$P nuclear magnetic resonance measurements. Temperature dependent magnetic susceptibility could be described well using a weakly coupled spin-$1/2$ dimer model with an excitation gap $Δ/k_{\rm B}\simeq 26.1$ K between the singlet ground state and triplet excited states and a weak inter-dimer exchange coupling $J^\prime/k_{\rm B} \simeq 4.6$ K. A gapped chain model also describes the data well with a gap of about 20 K. The ESR intensity as a function of temperature traces the bulk susceptibility nicely. The isotropic Land$\acute{\rm e}$ $g$-factor is estimated to be about $g \simeq 1.97$, at room temperature. We are able to resolve the $^{31}$P NMR signal as coming from two inequivalent P-sites in the crystal structure. The hyperfine coupling constant between $^{31}$P nucleus and V$^{4+}$ spins is calculated to be $A_{\rm hf}(1) \simeq 2963$ Oe/$μ_{\rm B}$ and $A_{\rm hf}(2) \simeq 1466$ Oe/$μ_{\rm B}$ for the P(1) and P(2) sites, respectively. Our NMR shift and spin-lattice relaxation rate for both the $^{31}$P sites show an activated behaviour at low temperatures, further confirming the singlet ground state. The estimated value of the spin gap from the NMR data measured in an applied field of $H = 9.394$ T is consistent with the gap obtained from the magnetic susceptibility analysis using the dimer model. Because of a relatively small spin gap, NH$_4$[(V$_2$O$_3$)$_2$(4,4$^\prime$-$bpy$)$_2$(H$_2$PO$_4$)(PO$_4$)$_2$]$\cdot$0.5H$_2$O is a promising compound for further experimental studies under high magnetic fields.

Exact helicoidal and catenoidal solutions in Einstein-Maxwell theory

We present several new exact solutions in five and higher dimensional Einstein-Maxwell theory by embedding the Nutku instanton. The metric functions for the five-dimensional solutions depend only on a radial coordinate and on two spatial coordinates for the six and higher dimensional solutions. The six and higher dimensional metric functions are convoluted-like integrals of two special functions. We find that the solutions are regular almost everywhere and some spatial sections of the solution describe wormhole handles. We also find a class of exact and nonstationary convoluted-like solutions to the Einstein-Maxwell theory with a cosmological constant.

Exact Solutions to Einstein-Maxwell theory on Eguchi-Hanson Space

In this article, we construct explicit analytical exact solutions to the six and higher dimensional Einstein-Maxwell theory. In all solutions, a subspace of the metric is the Eguchi-Hanson space where the metric functions are completely determined in terms of known analytical functions. Moreover, we find the solutions can be extended to non-stationary exact solutions to Einstein-Maxwell theory with cosmological constant. We show that the solutions are asymptotically expanding patches of de-Sitter spacetime.

Collectivity in the light radon nuclei measured directly via Coulomb excitation

Background: Shape coexistence in heavy nuclei poses a strong challenge to state-of-the-art nuclear models, where several competing shape minima are found close to the ground state. A classic region for investigating this phenomenon is in the region around $Z=82$ and the neutron mid-shell at $N=104$. Purpose: Evidence for shape coexistence has been inferred from $α$-decay measurements, laser spectroscopy and in-beam measurements. While the latter allow the pattern of excited states and rotational band structures to be mapped out, a detailed understanding of shape coexistence can only come from measurements of electromagnetic matrix elements. Method: Secondary, radioactive ion beams of $^{202}$Rn and $^{204}$Rn were studied by means of low-energy Coulomb excitation at the REX-ISOLDE facility in CERN. Results: The electric-quadrupole ($E2$) matrix element connecting the ground state and first-excited $2^{+}_{1}$ state was extracted for both $^{202}$Rn and $^{204}$Rn, corresponding to ${B(E2;2^{+}_{1} \to 2^{+}_{1})=29^{+8}_{-8}}$ W.u. and $43^{+17}_{-12}$ W.u., respectively. Additionally, $E2$ matrix elements connecting the $2^{+}_{1}$ state with the $4^{+}_{1}$ and $2^{+}_{2}$ states were determined in $^{202}$Rn. No excited $0^{+}$ states were observed in the current data set, possibly due to a limited population of second-order processes at the currently-available beam energies. Conclusions: The results are discussed in terms of collectivity and the deformation of both nuclei studied is deduced to be weak, as expected from the low-lying level-energy schemes. Comparisons are also made to state-of-the-art beyond-mean-field model calculations and the magnitude of the transitional quadrupole moments are well reproduced.

Components of the dilepton continuum in Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}} = 2.76 $ TeV

The dilepton invariant mass spectrum measured in heavy-ion collisions includes contributions from important QGP probes such as thermal radiation and the quarkonium ($J/ψ$, $ψ'$ and $Υ$) states. Dileptons coming from hard $q \bar q$ scattering, the Drell-Yan process, contribute in all mass regions. In heavy-ion colliders, such as the LHC, semileptonic decays of heavy flavor hadrons provide a substantial contribution to the dilepton continuum. The dilepton continuum can give quantitative information about heavy quark yields and their modification in the medium and thus it is important to know all different sources which populate the continuum. In the present study, we calculate $c \bar c$ and $b \bar b$ production and determine their contributions to the dilepton continuum in Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}} = 2.76$ TeV with and without including heavy quark energy loss. We also calculate the rates for Drell-Yan and thermal dilepton production. The contributions to the continuum from these dilepton sources are studied in the kinematic ranges relevant for the LHC detectors. The relatively high $p_T$ cutoff for single leptons excludes most dileptons produced by the thermal medium. Heavy flavors are the dominant source of dilepton production in all the kinematic regimes except at forward rapidities where Drell-Yan start dominating in high mass range beyond 10 GeV/$c^2$.

Absence of low-temperature dependence of the decay of 7Be and 198Au in metallic hosts

The electron-capture (EC) decay rate of 7Be in metallic Cu host and the beta-decay rate of 198Au in the host alloy Al-Au have been measured simultaneously at several temperatures, ranging from 0.350 K to 293 K. No difference of the half-life of 198Au between 12.5 K and 293 K is observed to a precision of 0.1%. By utilizing the special characteristics of our double-source assembly, possible geometrical effects that influence the individual rates could be eliminated. The ratio of 7Be to 198Au activity thus obtained also remains constant for this temperatures range to the experimental precision of 0.15(0.16)%. The resulting null temperature dependence is discussed in terms of the inadequacy of the often-used Debye-Huckel model for such measurements.

Sodium Ion Ordering in NaxCoO2

The layered sodium cobalt oxide NaxCoO2 is studied by electron diffraction for a wide range of sodium contents, 0.15<x<0.75. An extensive series of ordered Na ion-Na vacancy superlattices is found beyond the simple hexagonal average structure. The most strongly developed superlattice is found for the composition Na0.5CoO2, which displays Co3+/Co4+ charge ordering at low temperatures. The structural principle for some of the observed ordering schemes, particularly near x=0.5, is, surprisingly, the presence of lines of Na ions and vacancies rather than simply maximized Na-Na separations.

Observation of Plasma Focusing of a 28.5 GeV Positron Beam

The observation of plasma focusing of a 28.5 GeV positron beam is reported. The plasma was formed by ionizing a nitrogen jet only 3 mm thick. Simultaneous focusing in both transverse dimensions was observed with effective focusing strengths of order Tesla per micron. The minimum area of the beam spot was reduced by a factor of 2.0 +/- 0.3 by the plasma. The longitudinal beam envelope was measured and compared with numerical calculations.

Statics and dynamics of phase segregation in multicomponent fermion gas

We investigate the statics and dynamics of spatial phase segregation process of a mixture of fermion atoms in a harmonic trap using the density functional theory. The kinetic energy of the fermion gas is written in terms of the density and its gradients. Several cases have been studied by neglecting the gradient terms (the Thomas-Fermi limit) which are then compared with the Monte-Carlo results using the full gradient corrected kinetic energy. A linear instability analysis has been performed using the random-phase approximation. Near the onset of instability, the fastest unstable mode for spinodal decomposition is found to occur at $q=0$. However, in the strong coupling limit, many more modes with $q\approx K_F$ decay with comparable time scales.

A Preshower Photon Multiplicity Detector for the WA98 Experiment

A high granularity preshower detector has been fabricated and installed in the WA98 Experiment at the CERN SPS for measuring the spatial distribution of photons produced in the forward region in lead ion induced interactions. Photons are counted by detecting the preshower signal in plastic scintillator pads placed behind a 3 radiation length thick lead converter and applying a threshold on the scintillator signal to reject the minimum ionizing particles. Techniques to improve the imaging of the fibre and performance of the detector in the high multiplicity environment of lead-lead collisions are described. Using Monte-Carlo simulation methods and test beam data of pi- and e- at various energies the photon counting efficiency is estimated to be 68% for central and 73% for peripheral Pb+Pb collisions.
