Measurement of beam-recoil observables Ox, Oz and target asymmetry for the reaction gamma p -> K Lambda

The double polarization (beam-recoil) observables Ox and Oz have been measured for the reaction gamma p -> K Lambda from threshold production to Egamma = 1500 MeV. The data were obtained with the linearly polarized beam of the GRAAL facility. Values for the target asymmetry T could also be extracted despite the use of an unpolarized target. Analyses of our results by two isobar models tend to confirm the necessity to include new or poorly known resonances in the 1900 MeV mass region.

Evidence for a narrow N(1685) resonance in eta photoproduction off the nucleon

Revised analysis of Sigma beam asymmetry for eta photoproduction off the free proton from GRAAL is presented. New analysis reveals a narrow structure near W ~1.685 GeV. We describe this structure by the contribution of a narrow resonance with quantum numbers P_{11}, or P_{13}, or D_{13}. Being considered together with the recent observations of a bump-like structure at W~1.68 GeV in the quasi-free eta photoproduction off the neutron, this result provides an evidence for a narrow (Gamma < 25 MeV) N*(1685) resonance. Properties of this possible new nucleon state, namely the mass, the narrow width, and the much stronger photocoupling to the neutron, are similar to those predicted for the non-strange member of anti-decouplet of exotic baryons.

Photoproduction off the nucleon revisited: Evidence for a narrow N(1688) resonance?

Revised analysis of $Σ$ beam asymmetry for the $η$ photoproduction on the free proton reveals a structure at $W\sim 1.69$ GeV. Fit of the experimental data based on the E429 solution of the SAID partial wave analysis suggests a narrow ($Γ\leq 25$ MeV) resonance. Possible candidates are $P_{11}, P_{13}$, or $D_{13}$ resonances. The result is considered in conjunction with the recent evidence for a bump-like structure at $W\sim 1.67 - 1.68$ GeV in the quasi-free $η$ photoproduction on the neutron.

Eta Photoproduction on the proton revisited: Evidence for a narrow N(1685) resonance

Revised analysis of $Σ$ beam asymmetry for $η$ photoproduction on the free proton reveals a resonant structure at $W\sim 1.69$ GeV. Comparison of experimental data with multipole decomposition based on the E429 solution of the SAID partial wave analysis and including narrow states, suggests a narrow ($Γ\leq 15$ MeV) resonance. Possible candidates are $P_{11}$, $P_{13}$, or $D_{13}$ resonances. The result is considered in conjunction with the recent evidence for a bump-like structure at $W\sim 1.67 - 1.68$ GeV in quasi-free $η$ photoproduction on the neutron.

Evidence for a narrow structure at W~1.68 GeV in eta photoproduction on the neutron

New results on quasi-free $η$ photoproduction on the neutron and proton bound in a deuteron target are presented. The $γn \to ηn$ quasi-free cross section reveals a bump-like structure which is not seen in the cross section on the proton. This structure may signal the existence of a relatively narrow ($M\sim 1.68$ GeV, $Γ\leq 30$ MeV) baryon state.

K*-couplings for the antidecuplet excitation

We estimate the coupling of the K* vector meson to the N-->Theta+ transition employing unitary symmetry, vector meson dominance, and results from the GRAAL Collaboration for eta photoproduction off the neutron. Our small numerical value for the coupling constant is consistent with the non-observation of the Theta+ in recent CLAS searches for its photoproduction. We also estimate the K*-coupling for the N-->Sigma* excitation, with Sigma* being the Sigma-like antidecuplet partner of the Theta+-baryon.

Eta photoproduction off the neutron at GRAAL

The gamma n -> eta n quasi-free cross section reveals a resonant structure at W ~ 1.675 GeV. This structure may be a manifestation of a baryon resonance. A priori its properties, the possibly narrow width and the strong photocoupling to the neutron, look surprising. This structure may also signal the existence of a narrow state.

Extraction of radiative decay width for the non-strange partner of Theta^+

Using the results of the GRAAL collaboration on the ηphotoproduction from the neutron target, we attempt to extract the partial radiative width of the possible new nucleon resonance N^*(1675). The obtained estimates support this resonance to be a very attractive candidate for the non-strange member of the exotic antidecuplet of baryons -- a partner of the Θ^+ pentaquark. Our phenomenological value for the transition magnetic moment μ(n^* n), appears to be in good agreement with predictions of the Chiral Quark Soliton Model.

Shot Noise in Negative-Differential-Conductance Devices

We have compared the shot-noise properties at T = 4.2 K of a double-barrier resonant-tunneling diode and a superlattice tunnel diode, both of which exhibit negative differential-conductance (NDC) in their current-voltage characteristics. While the noise spectral density of the former device was greatly enhanced over the Poissonian value of 2eI in the NDC region, that of the latter device remained 2eI. This result implies that charge accumulation, not system instability, is responsible for shot-noise enhancement in NDC devices.

U-70 Proton Synchrotron Extracted Beam Lines Control System Modernization

A 70 GeV Proton Synchrotron Extracted Beam Lines Control System is described. About 130 Magnet Dipoles and Quadrupoles, 20 Correction Magnets, 50 Beam Collimators, BPM equipment spread over 1 Km have to be controlled. The old System was based on the PDP-11/40 and LSI-11 compatible computers and the MIL 1553 STD as a Field Bus. It successfully operated about 15 years. A new system includes home made Equipment Controllers based on I 8051 Processors, CAN Field Bus, FECs, Servers, Consoles connected by Ethernet. On the first stage of modernization PDPs and LSIs are replaced with PCs connected by Ethernet. Equipment controllers are being successfully tested in the Collimators and Corrector Magnets Controls during a run.

Backlund transformations for finite-dimensional integrable systems: a geometric approach

We present a geometric construction of Backlund transformations and discretizations for a large class of algebraic completely integrable systems. To be more precise, we construct families of Backlund transformations, which are naturally parametrized by the points on the spectral curve(s) of the system. The key idea is that a point on the curve determines, through the Abel-Jacobi map, a vector on its Jacobian which determines a translation on the corresponding level set of the integrals (the generic level set of an algebraic completely integrable systems has a group structure). Globalizing this construction we find (possibly multi-valued, as is very common for Backlund transformations) maps which preserve the integrals of the system, they map solutions to solutions and they are symplectic maps (or, more generally, Poisson maps). We show that these have the spectrality property, a property of Backlund transformations that was recently introduced. Moreover, we recover Backlund transformations and discretizations which have up to now been constructed by ad-hoc methods, and we find Backlund transformations and discretizations for other integrable systems. We also introduce another approach, using pairs of normalizations of eigenvectors of Lax operators and we explain how our two methods are related through the method of separation of variables.
