On the infrared sensitivity of the longitudinal cross section in $e^+ e^-$ annihilation

We have calculated the contributions proportional to $β_0^nα_s^{n+1}$ to the longitudinal fragmentation function in $e^+e^-$ annihilation to all orders of perturbation theory. We use this result to estimate higher-order perturbative corrections and nonperturbative corrections to the longitudinal cross section $σ_L$ and discuss the prospects of determining $α_s$ from $σ_L$. The structure of infrared renormalons in the perturbative expansion suggests that the longitudinal cross section for hadron production with fixed momentum fraction $x$ receives nonperturbative contributions of order $1/(x^2Q^2)$, whereas the total cross section has a larger, $1/Q$ correction. This correction arises from very large longitudinal distances and is related to the behaviour of the Borel integral for the cross section with fixed $x$ at large values of the Borel parameter.

Resummation of threshold corrections in QCD to power accuracy: the Drell-Yan cross section as a case study

Resummation of large infrared logarithms in perturbation theory can, in certain circumstances, enhance the sensitivity to small gluon momenta and introduce spurious nonperturbative contributions. In particular, different procedures -- equivalent in perturbation theory -- to organize this resummation can differ by $1/Q$ power corrections. The question arises whether one can formulate resummation procedures that are explicitly consistent with the infrared behaviour of finite-order Feynman diagrams. We explain how this problem can be treated and resolved in Drell-Yan (lepton pair) production and briefly discuss more complicated cases, such as top quark production and event shape variables in the $e^+e^-$ annihilation.

Theoretical Update of the Semileptonic Branching Ratio of B Mesons

We reconsider the prediction of the semileptonic branching ratio of B mesons, using a recent calculation of the radiative corrections with account for finite quark masses in nonleptonic decays and taking into account 1/m_b^2 corrections. For the semileptonic branching ratio we obtain B_SL =(11.8\pm 1.6)% using pole quark masses and B_SL = (11.0\pm 1.9)% using running MS-bar quark masses. The uncertainty is dominated by unknown higher order perturbative corrections. We conclude that the present accuracy of the theoretical analysis does not allow to state a significant disagreement with the experimental results. However, our re-analysis of the decay b->ccs yields an increase of (35\pm 11)% due to next-to-leading order corrections including mass dependent terms, which further emphasizes the problem of the average charm quark content of the final states in B decays. Abstract of the erratum: Some of the numerical results presented in our paper PLB 342 (1995) 362 are affected by an error in the computer program and need to be revised. The numerical changes are, however, marginal. We take the opportunity to incorporate the complete results for the quark mass dependence of the radiative corrections to the subprocess b->ccs and enlarge the discussion of the average charm quark content in the final state, giving the results in two different renormalization schemes and adding a figure with charm quark content plotted vs. the semileptonic branching ratio.

The $ρ$ Meson Light-Cone Distribution Amplitudes of Leading Twist Revisited

We give a complete re-analysis of the leading twist quark-antiquark light-cone distribution amplitudes of longitudinal and transverse $ρ$ mesons. We derive Wandzura-Wilczek type relations between different distributions and update the coefficients in their conformal expansion using QCD sum rules including next-to-leading order radiative corrections. We find that the distribution amplitudes of quarks inside longitudinally and transversely polarized $ρ$ mesons have a similar shape, which is in contradiction to previous analyses.

Resummation of Running Coupling Effects in Semileptonic B Meson Decays and Extraction of $|V_{cb}|$

We present a determination of $|V_{cb}|$ from semileptonic B decays that includes resummation of supposedly large perturbative corrections, originating from the running of the strong coupling. We argue that the low value of the BLM scale found previously for inclusive decays is a manifestation of the renormalon divergence of the perturbative series starting already in third order. A reliable determination of $|V_{cb}|$ from inclusive decays is possible if one either uses a short-distance b quark mass or eliminates all unphysical mass parameters in terms of measured observables, such that all infra-red contributions of order $1/m_b$ cancel explicitly. We find that using the $\overline{\rm MS}$ running mass significantly reduces the perturbative coefficients already in low orders. For a semileptonic branching ratio of $10.9\%$ we obtain $|V_{cb}|(τ_B/1.50\,{\rm ps})^{1/2}= 0.041\pm 0.002$ from inclusive decays, in good agreement with the value extracted from exclusive decays.

Estimates of the Weak Annihilation Contributions to the Decays $B \to ρ+ γ$ and $B \to ω+ γ$

The dominant long-distance contributions to the exclusive radiative decays $B \to ρ(ω) + γ$ involve photon emission from the light quarks at large distances, which cannot be treated perturbatively. We point out that this emission can be described in a theoretically consistent way as the magnetic excitation of quarks in the QCD vacuum and estimate the corresponding parity-conserving and parity-violating amplitudes using the light-cone QCD sum rule approach. These are then combined with the corresponding short-distance contribution from the magnetic moment operator in the same approach, derived earlier, to estimate the decay rates $Γ(B \to ρ(ω) + γ)$. The implications of this result for the determination of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix elements in radiative $B$ decays are worked out.

QCD Renormalons and Higher Twist Effects

I give a short review of the relation of infrared renormalons in QCD and higher twist effects, with the emphasis on possible applications. In particular, I present estimates of renormalon-induced uncertainties in deep inelastic sum rules and explain how the renormalons can potentially be used to unravel the structure of nonperturbative effects in complicated situations and to indicate possible systematic sources of large perturbative corrections.

$D^*Dπ$ and $B^*Bπ$ couplings in QCD

We calculate the $D^*Dπ$ and $B^*Bπ$ couplings using QCD sum rules on the light-cone. In this approach, the large-distance dynamics is incorporated in a set of pion wave functions. We take into account two-particle and three-particle wave functions of twist 2, 3 and 4. The resulting values of the coupling constants are $g_{D^*Dπ}= 12.5\pm 1$ and $g_{B^*Bπ}= 29\pm 3 $. From this we predict the partial width $ Γ(D^{*+} \ra D^0 π^+ )=32 \pm 5~ keV $. We also discuss the soft-pion limit of the sum rules which is equivalent to the external axial field approach employed in earlier calculations. Furthermore, using $g_{B^*Bπ}$ and $g_{D^*Dπ}$ the pole dominance model for the $ B \ra π$ and $D\ra π$ semileptonic form factors is compared with the direct calculation of these form factors in the same framework of light-cone sum rules.

Instanton-induced production of QCD jets

We consider the instanton contributions for the production of a gluon jet with large transverse momentum in QCD. We find that Mueller's corrections corresponding to the rescattering of hard quanta are likely to remove contributions of large instantons, making this cross section well defined. This observation generalizes the previous discussion of instanton effects in the deep inelastic scattering and suggests that all hard processes in the QCD receive hard non-perturbative corrections from instantons of small size, of order $ρ\sim 1/(Qα_s)$.

Charm Quark Mass Dependence of QCD Corrections to Nonleptonic Inclusive B Decays

We calculate the radiative corrections to the nonleptonic inclusive B decay mode $b\rightarrow c\bar u d$ taking into account the charm quark mass. Compared to the massless case, corrections resulting from a nonvanishing c quark mass increase the nonleptonic rate by (4--8)\%, depending on the renormalization point. As a by--product of our calculation, we obtain an analytic expression for the radiative correction to the semileptonic decay $b\rightarrow uτ\barν$ taking into account the $τ$ lepton mass, and estimate the c quark mass effects on the nonleptonic decay mode $b\rightarrow c\bar c s$.

Instanton-induced production of jets with large transverse momentum in QCD

We consider the instanton-induced cross section for production of a gluon jet with large transverse momentum in QCD and point out that Mueller's corrections corresponding to the rescattering of hard quanta are likely to remove contributions of large instantons, making this cross section well defined. Some speculations about possible phenomenological signatures are presented.

Heavy Quark Effective Theory beyond Perturbation Theory: Renormalons, the Pole Mass and the Residual Mass Term

We study the asymptotic behaviour of the perturbative series in the heavy quark effective theory (HQET) using the $1/N_f$ expansion. We find that this theory suffers from an {\it ultraviolet} renormalon problem, corresponding to a non-Borel-summable behaviour of perturbation series in large orders, and leading to a principal nonperturbative ambiguity in its definition. This ambiguity is related to an {\it infrared} renormalon in the pole mass and can be understood as the necessity to include the residual mass term $δm$ in the definition of HQET, which must be considered as ambiguous (and possibly complex), and is required to cancel the ultraviolet renormalon singularity generated by the perturbative expansion. The formal status of $δm$ is thus identical to that of condensates in the conventional short-distance expansion of correlation functions in QCD. The status of the pole mass of a heavy quark, the operator product expansion for inclusive decays, and QCD sum rules in the HQET are discussed in this context.

Bloch-Nordsieck cancellations beyond logarithms in heavy particle decays

We investigate the one-loop radiative corrections to the semileptonic decay of a charged particle at finite gauge boson mass. Extending the Bloch-Nordsieck cancellation of infrared logarithms, the subsequent non-analytic terms are also found to vanish after eliminating the pole mass in favor of a mass defined at short distances. This observation justifies the operator product expansion for inclusive decays of heavy mesons and implies that infrared effects associated with the summation of the radiative corrections are suppressed by at least three powers of the mass of the heavy decaying particle.

Soft contribution to the pion form factor from light-cone QCD sum rules

We propose a simple method to calculate the pion form factor at not very large momentum transfers, which combines the technique of the QCD sum rules with the description of the pion in terms of the set of wave functions of increasing twist. This approach allows one to calculate the soft (end point) contribution to the form factor in a largely model-independent way. Our results confirm existing expectations that the soft contribution remains important at least up to the momentum transfers of order 10 GeV$^2$, and suggest that it comes from the region of relatively small transverse separations of order 1 GeV$^{-1}$.

Exclusive Radiative B-Decays in the Light-Cone QCD Sum Rule Approach

We carry out a detailed study of exclusive radiative rare $B$-decays in the framework of the QCD sum rules on the light cone, which combines the traditional QCD sum rule technique with the description of final state vector mesons in terms of the light-cone wave functions of increasing twist. The decays considered are: $B_{u,d} \to K^* +γ, B_{u,d}\to ρ+γ, B_d\to ω+γ$ and the corresponding decays of the $B_s$ mesons, $B_s\to ϕ+γ$ and $B_s\to K^*+γ$. Based on our estimate of the transition form factor $F_1^{B \to K^*\pg}(0) =0.32\pm0.05$, we find for the branching ratio $BR(B \to K^* + γ) = (4.8\pm 1.5)\times 10^{-5}$, which is in agreement with the observed value measured by the CLEO collaboration. We present detailed estimates for the ratios of the radiative decay form factors, which are then used to predict the rates for the exclusive radiative B-decays listed above. This in principle allows the extraction of the CKM matrix element $|V_{td}|$ from the penguin-dominated CKM-suppressed radiative decays when they are measured. We give a detailed discussion of the dependence of the form factors on the $b$-quark mass and on the momentum transfer, as well as their interrelation with the CKM-suppressed semileptonic decay form factors in $B\to ρ+\ell+ν$, which we also calculate in our approach.

ERRATUM TO: Power corrections $1/Q^2$ to parton sum rules for deep inelastic scattering from polarized targets

We clarify conflicting results in the literature on coefficient functions in front of higher twist operators contributing to the parton sum rules for deep inelastic scattering from polarized targets. The necessary corrections do not affect our calculations of matrix elements, published in Phys.Lett.B242(1990)245, but change final estimates of the $\sim 1/Q^2$ contributions to Bjorken and Ellis--Jaffe sum rules.
