Equilibrium kink-like torsion deformation of a magnetoactive elastomer under a magnetic field

A novel effect involving the formation of a stable kink-like torsion deformation in a magnetoactive elastomer (MAE) beam subjected to a uniform magnetic field is theoretically predicted and experimentally confirmed. The phenomenon was demonstrated using an elastomer beam containing soft magnetic carbonyl iron microparticles within a silicone matrix. The torsion kink acts as a transition boundary between two undeformed homogeneous states of the beam. We show that the elastic moment is compensated by a magnetoelastic moment in the kink region, where the local magnetization of the beam is non-collinear to the applied magnetic field due to shape anisotropy. It is established that within the kink region, the MAE beam exists in a non-uniformly elastically deformed, low-symmetry magnetic state. Outside the kink, the beam's magnetization is collinear with the magnetic field, corresponding to an undeformed, high-symmetry homogeneous magnetic state.

The structural-size effect, aging time, and pressure-dependent functional properties of Mn-containing perovskite nanoparticles

The properties of nanoparticles are determined by their size and structure. When exposed to external pressure P, their structural properties can change. The improvement or degradation of the properties of the samples depending on time is particularly interesting. The knowledge of the influence of structural-size effect, aging time, and pressure on the behavior of the compounds is essential for fundamental and applied purposes. Therefore, the first attempts have been made to shed light on how the functional properties of the Mn-containing perovskites change depending on them. The nanoparticles of different sizes, from 20 to 70 nm, have been obtained. After 3 years, their structural properties underwent significant changes, including an increase in particle size, bandwidth, and microstrains, as well as a reduction in dislocation density. The greatest change in the structure is observed for the smallest nanoparticles. The phase transition temperatures increase with nanoparticle size, time, and pressure. The aging time has the strongest influence on the changing Curie temperature for the smallest and most magnetically inhomogeneous nanoparticles with dTc/dP = 100 K / GPa. Conversely, the structural-size effect and external pressure have the greatest influence on the biggest and most magnetically uniform nanoparticles with dTc/dP = 91 and 16 K / GPa, respectively. After 3 years, the biggest nanoparticles demonstrate the most stable phase transition temperatures with improved magnetocaloric parameters near room temperature. These structural-size effect, aging time, and pressure are powerful instruments to tune the phase transition temperatures and magnetocaloric effect of the nanoparticles. These outcomes may have implications for the whole class of perovskites and could initiate a new mainstream.

Critical bending and magnetic shape memory effect in magnetoactive elastomers

The results of a study of magnetoactive elastomers (MAEs) consisting of an elastomer matrix with embedded ferromagnetic particles are presented. A continuous critical bending induced by the magnetic field, characterized by a critical exponent for the bending magnitude, and the derivative of which has a singularity in the critical region is reported for the first time. The mechanical stability loss and the symmetry reduction of the magnetic state, which are interrelated with each other, take place at the critical point. The magnetization in the high-symmetric state (below the critical point) is directed along the magnetic field and the torque is absent. Above the critical point, the magnetization and the magnetic field are noncollinear and there arises a torque, which is self-consistent with the bending. The magnetic field dependence of the MAE bending was found to have a hysteresis, which is associated with the magneto-rheological effect. The shape memory effect was also obtained for the MAE bending in a cycle consisting of magnetization, cooling (at H=/0), and heating (at H=0). The influence of the critical glass transition temperature of the matrix, as well as its melting/solidification temperature, on the magnetic shape memory effect was studied.

Magnetoactive elastomer based on superparamagnetic nanoparticles with Curie point close to room temperature

A magnetoactive elastomer (MAE) consisting of single-domain La0.8Ag0.2Mn1.2O3 nanoparticles with a Curie temperature close to room temperature (TC = 308 K) in a silicone matrix has been prepared and comprehensively studied. It has been found that at room temperature and above, MAE particles are magnetized superparamagnetically with a low coercivity below 10 Oe, and the influence of magnetic anisotropy on the appearance of a torque is justified. A coupling between magnetization and magnetoelasticity has been also established. The mechanisms of the appearance of magnetoelasticity, including the effect of MAE rearrangement and MAE compression by magnetized particles, have been revealed. It has been found that the magnetoelastic properties of MAE have critical features near TC. The magnetoelastic properties of MAE disappear at T > TC and are restored at T < TC. This makes it possible to use MAE at room temperature as a smart material for devices with self-regulating magnetoelastic properties.

Magnetorheological effect in elastomers containing uniaxial ferromagnetic particles

The description of the collective magnetorheological effect induced by magnetic field in magnetoactive elastomers is proposed. The condition of consistency is used between magnetic and mechanic momenta of forces exerted on magnetically uniaxial ferromagnetic particles in elastomer at their magnetization. The study shows that even in the case of small concentration of particles, the value of magnetically-induced shear can be anomalously large, reaching up to tens of percent. The deformation of magnetoactive elastomer can evolve critically, as a second-order phase transition, if magnetic field is aligned along the easy axis of particles.

In-plane anisotropy effect on critical transition field in nanogranular films with perpendicular anisotropy

The influence of the in-plane anisotropy on the magnetization of a nanogranular film with perpendicular anisotropy has been studied. It is shown that if a magnetic field is tilted with respect to the film normal, a critical transition from the inhomogeneous magnetic state of granules with noncollinear directions of their moments to the homogeneous one with parallel orientation of granular magnetic moments takes place. The in-plane anisotropy is found to affect the angular dependence of the critical field. The ensemble of oriented biaxial particles is theoretically described in the double-well potential approximation. Despite the biaxial magnetic anisotropy of particles, their ensemble, if in the inhomogeneous state, is divided into two subensembles, with the magnetic moments of particles being collinear in each of them. In the critical field, a transition from the inhomogeneous state with two subensembles into the homogeneous one takes place. The results of theoretical calculations are compared with experimental data for a nanogranular Co/Al2On film with perpendicular anisotropy containing 74.5 at.% Co, which exceeds the percolation threshold. The magnetic moment of this film is a sum of two contributions: from nanogranules with biaxial anisotropy and a phase forming the percolation cluster. The magnetic properties of nanogranules, whose contribution is separated from the total film magnetization, agree well with the calculation data.

The superferromagnetic state in the ensemble of oriented Stoner-Wohlfarth particles: a coercivity due to phase stability

It is observed experimentally that the coercive field has an anomalous angular dependence at temperatures above the blocking temperature in physically nonpercolated granular films CoFeB-SiO$_{2}$ with anisotropic granules oriented in the same direction. It is shown that the anomaly is determined by the singularity of an angular dependence of the critical field causing the absolute loss of phase stability of the superferromagnetic state of an ensemble of interacting superparamagnetic granules.

The influence of intergranular interaction on the magnetization of the ensemble of oriented Stoner-Wohlfarth nanoparticles

We consider the influence of interparticle interaction on the magnetization reversal in the oriented Stoner-Wohlfarth nanoparticles ensemble. To do so, we solve a kinetic equation for the relaxation of the overall ensemble magnetization to its equilibrium value in some effective mean field. Latter field consists of external magnetic field and interaction mean field proportional to the instantaneous value of above magnetization. We show that the interparticle interaction influences the temperature dependence of a coercive field. This influence manifests itself in the noticeable coercivity at $T>T_{b}$ ($T_{b}$ is so-called blocking temperature). The above interaction can also lead to a formation of the "superferromagnetic" state with correlated directions of particle magnetic moments at $T>T_{b}$. This state possesses coercivity if the overall magnetization has a component directed along the easy axis of each particle. We have shown that the coercive field in the "superferromagnetic" state does not depend on measuring time. This time influences both $T_{b}$ and the temperature dependence of coercive field at $T<T_{b}$. We corroborate our theoretical results by measurements on nanogranular films (CoFeB)$_{x}$-(SiO$_{2}$)$_{1-x}$ with concentration of ferromagnetic particles close, but below percolation threshold.

Anomalous low-temperature magnetoelastic properties of nanogranular (CoFeB)$_{x}$-(SiO$_{2}$)$_{1-x}$

We report magnetostatic measurements for granulated films (CoFeB)$_{x}$-(SiO$_{2}$)$_{1-x}$ with fabrication induced intraplanar anisotropy. The measurements have been performed in the film plane in the wide temperature interval 4.5$÷$300 K. They demonstrate that above films have low-temperature anomaly below the percolation threshold for conductivity. The essence of the above peculiarity is that below 100 K the temperature dependence of coercive field for magnetization along easy direction deviates strongly from Neel-Brown law. At temperature lowering, the sharp increase of coercivity is observed, accompanied by the appearance of coercive field for magnetization along hard direction in the film plane. We establish that observed effect is related to the properties of individual ferromagnetic granules. The effect weakens as granules merge into conglomerates at $x$ higher then percolation threshold and disappears completely at $x>1$. We explain the above effect as a consequence of the difference in thermal expansion coefficients of granule and cover material. At temperature lowering this difference weakens the envelopment of an individual granule by the cover matrix material, thus permitting to realize the spontaneous magnetostriction of a granule. The latter induces an additional anisotropy with new easy axis of a granule magnetization along the external magnetic field direction. Our explanation is tested and corroborated by the ferromagnetic resonance measurements in the films at $T$ = 300 K and $T$ = 77 K.

Magnetization and Magnetoscrition of van Vleck antiferromagnets with magnetic anisotropy of "easy-plane" type

The theoretical description of quantum phase transition, induced by the external magnetic field, into antiferromagnetic state in the van Vleck - singlet - magnet with a single-ion anisotropy of "easy-plane" type and ion spin S=1 is proposed. It is shown that the spin polarization of the ground non-degenerated state proves to be the order parameter of such a transition and that the Landau thermodynamic approach can be employed for its (transition) description. The magnetic properties which include the field behavior of the magnetization and magnetic susceptibility of the antiferromagnetic phase in the fields of different directions are studied. The peculiarities of induced magnetostriction in van Vleck antiferromagnet, which as well as magnetization has a singularity in the phase transition point, are investigated. An attempt is made for qualitative comparison of results obtained with avaliable experimental data.
