Energy weighted sums for collective excitations in nuclear Fermi-liquid

Model independent, $m_1$, adiabatic, $m_{-1}$, and high-energy, $m_3$, energy weighted sums for the isoscalar and isovector nuclear excitations are investigated within the framework of the kinetic theory adopted to the description of a two-component nuclear Fermi-liquid. For both the adiabatic and scaling approaches, the connection of the EWS $m_{-1}$ and $m_3$ to the nuclear stiffness coefficients and the first- and zero-sound velocity is established. We study the enhancement factor $κ_{I}$ in the energy weighted sum $m'_1$ for the isovector excitations and provide the reasonable explanation of the experimental exceeding of the 100% exhaustion of sum $m'_1$ for the isovector giant dipole resonances. We show the dependence of the enhancement factor $κ_{I}$ on the nuclear mass number $A$ and analyse its dependence on the Landau's isovector amplitude $F'_1$.

Small damping approach in Fermi-liquid theory

The validity of small damping approximation (SDA) for the quasi-classical description of the averaged properties of nuclei at high temperatures is studied within the framework of collisional kinetic theory. The isoscalar collective quadrupole vibrations in hot nuclei are considered. We show that the extension of the SDA, by accounting for the damping of the distribution function $δf$ in the collision integral reduces the rate of variation with temperature of the Fermi surface distortion effects. The damping of the $δf$ in the collision integral increases significantly the collisional width of the giant quadrupole resonance (GQR) for small enough values of the relaxation time. The temperature dependence of the eigenenergy of the GQR becomes much more weaker than in the corresponding SDA case.

Cavitation and bubble collapse in hot asymmetric nuclear matter

The dynamics of embryonic bubbles in overheated, viscous and non-Markovian nuclear matter is studied. It is shown that the memory and the Fermi surface distortions significantly affect the hinderance of bubble collapse and determine a characteristic oscillations of the bubble radius. These oscillations occur due to the additional elastic force induced by the memory integral.

Splashing and evaporation of nucleons from excited nuclei

The energy spectrum and the emission rate of particles emitted from excited nucleus due to both the evaporation and the splashing (emission from a cold vibrating nucleus) are calculated. We show that the collective motion of the nuclear Fermi liquid is accompanied by direct non-statistical emission of nucleons via the dynamical distortion of the Fermi surface.

Shape fluctuations in a Fermi system with nonlinear dissipativity

The contribution of thermal fluctuations to the widths of isoscalar giant multipole resonances (GMR) in heated nuclei is studied. Starting from the collisional kinetic equation, it is shown that an additional contribution to the nuclear friction and the corresponding GMR widths arises due to the nonlinear dissipativity effect. It is also shown that the magnitude of the contributions of the thermal fluctuations to the nuclear friction coefficient and the GMR widths do not exceed 20%.

Isoscalar giant monopole resonance and its overtone in microscopic and macroscopic models

We calculate the transition density for the overtone of the isosclar giant monopole resonance (ISGMR) from the response to an appropriate external field $\hat{f}_ξ(r)$ obtained using the seemiclassical fluid dynamic approximation and the Hartree-Fock (HF) based random phase approximation (RPA). We determine the mixing parameter $ξ$ by maximizing the ratio of the energy weighted sum for the overtone mode to the total energy weighted sum rule and derive a simple expression for the microscopic transition density associated with the overtone mode. This macroscopic transition density agrees well with that obtained from the HF-RPA calculations. We also point out that the ISGMR and its overtone can be clearly identified by considering the response to the electromagnetic external field $\hat{j}_o(qr)$ .

Equation of state and phase transitions in asymmetric nuclear matter

The structure of the 3-dimension pressure-temperature-asymmetry surface of equilibrium of the asymmetric nuclear matter is studied within the thermal Thomas-Fermi approximation. Special attention is paid to the difference of the asymmetry parameter between the boiling sheet and that of the condensation sheet of the surface of equilibrium. We derive the condition of existence of the regime of retrograde condensation at the boiling of the asymmetric nuclear matter. We have performed calculations of the caloric curves in the case of isobaric heating. We have shown the presence of the plateau region in caloric curves at the isobaric heating of the asymmetric nuclear matter. The shape of the caloric curve depends on the pressure and is sensitive to the value of the asymmetry parameter. We point out that the experimental value of the plateau temperature T \approx 7 MeV corresponds to the pressure P = 0.01 MeV/fm^3 at the isobaric boiling.

Sound modes in hot nuclear matter

The propagation of the isoscalar and isovector sound modes in a hot nuclear matter is considered. The approach is based on the collisional kinetic theory and takes into account the temperature and memory effects. It is shown that the sound velocity and the attenuation coefficient are significantly influenced by the Fermi surface distortion (FSD). The corresponding influence is much stronger for the isoscalar mode than for the isovector one. The memory effects cause a non-monotonous behavior of the attenuation coefficient as a function of the relaxation time leading to a zero-to-first sound transition with increasing temperature. The mixing of both the isoscalar and the isovector sound modes in an asymmetric nuclear matter is evaluated. The condition for the bulk instability and the instability growth rate in the presence of the memory effects is studied. It is shown that both the FSD and the relaxation processes lead to a shift of the maximum of the instability growth rate to the longer wave length region.

Memory effects on descent from nuclear fission barrier

Non-Markovian transport equations for nuclear large amplitude motion are derived from the collisional kinetic equation. The memory effects are caused by the Fermi surface distortions and depend on the relaxation time. It is shown that the nuclear collective motion and the nuclear fission are influenced strongly by the memory effects at the relaxation time $τ\geq 5\cdot 10^{-23}{\rm s}$. In particular, the descent of the nucleus from the fission barrier is accompanied by characteristic shape oscillations. The eigenfrequency and the damping of the shape oscillations depend on the contribution of the memory integral in the equations of motion. The shape oscillations disappear at the short relaxation time regime at $τ\to 0$, which corresponds to the usual Markovian motion in the presence of friction forces. We show that the elastic forces produced by the memory integral lead to a significant delay for the descent of the nucleus from the barrier. Numerical calculations for the nucleus $^{236}$U shows that due to the memory effect the saddle-to-scission time grows by a factor of about 3 with respect to the corresponding saddle-to-scission time obtained in liquid drop model calculations with friction forces.

Collisional relaxation of collective motion in a finite Fermi liquid

Finite size effects in the equilibrium phase space density distribution function are taken into account for alculations of the relaxation of collective motion in finite nuclei. Memory effects in the collision integral and the diffusivity and the quantum oscillations of the equilibrium distribution function in momentum space are considered. It is shown that a smooth diffuse (Fermi-type) equilibrium distribution function leads to a spurious contribution to the relaxation time. The residual quantum oscillations of the equilibrium distribution function eliminates the spurious contribution. It ensures the disappearance of the gain and loss terms in the collision integral in the ground state of the system and strongly reduces the internal collisional width of the isoscalar giant quadrupole resonances.

Low density instability in a nuclear Fermi liquid drop

The instability of a Fermi-liquid drop with respect to bulk density distortions is considered. It is shown that the presence of the surface strongly reduces the growth rate of the bulk instability of the finite Fermi-liquid drop because of the anomalous dispersion term in the dispersion relation. The instability growth rate is reduced due to the Fermi surface distortions and the relaxation processes. The dependence of the bulk instability on the multipolarity of the particle density fluctuations is demonstrated for two nuclei $^{40}Ca$ and $^{208}Pb$.

Dynamics and Instabilities of Nuclear Fermi Liquid

The kinetic theory of the Fermi liquid is applied to finite nuclei. The nuclear collective motion is treated in terms of the observable variables: particle density, current density, pressure etc. The nuclear dynamics is influenced strongly by the Fermi-surface distortion (FSD) effect. The relaxation of collective motion and the width of giant multipole resonances in hot nuclei show a saturated behaviour with temperature caused by the memory effect in the collision integral. The development of the bulk and surface instabilities of the nuclear Fermi-liquid is sensitive to the dynamic effects such as the FSD and the relaxation processes. The instability growth rate is reduced due to the FSD effect and depends on the multipolarity of the particle density and surface fluctuations.

Isovector Vibrations in Nuclear Matter at Finite Temperature

We consider the propagation and damping of isovector excitations in heated nuclear matter within the Landau Fermi-liquid theory. Results obtained for nuclear matter are applied to calculate the Giant Dipole Resonance (GDR) at finite temperature in heavy spherical nuclei within Steinwedel and Jensen model. The centroid energy of the GDR slightly decreases with increasing temperature and the width increases as $T^2$ for temperatures $T < 5$ MeV in agreement with recent experimental data for GDR in $^{208}$Pb and $^{120}$Sn. The validity of the method for other Fermi fluids is finally suggested.

Super Shell Structure of the Magnetic Susceptibility

The magnetic susceptibility of electrons confined to a spherical cavity or a circular billiard shows slow oscillations as a function of the number of electrons, which are a new manifestation of the Super Shell Structure found in the free energy of metal clusters. The relationship of the oscillations of the two different quantities is analyzed by means of semiclassical calculations, which are in quantitative agreement with quantal results.

Nuclear Shape Fluctuations in Fermi-Liquid Drop Model

Within the nuclear Fermi-liquid drop model, quantum and thermal fluctuations are considered by use of the Landau-Vlasov-Langevin equation. The spectral correlation function of the nuclear surface fluctuations is evaluated in a simple model of an incompressible and irrotational Fermi liquid. The dependence of the spectral correlation function on the dynamical Fermi-surface distortion is established. The temperature at which the eigenvibrations become overdamped is calculated. It is shown that, for realistic values of the relaxation time parameter and in the high temperature regime, there is a particular eigenmode of the Fermi liquid drop where the restoring force is exclusively due to the dynamical Fermi-surface distortion.
