Large deviations in rarefied quantum gases

The probability of observing a large deviation (LD) in the number of particles in a region $Λ$ in a dilute quantum gas contained in a much larger region $V$ is shown to decay as $\exp[-|Λ|ΔF]$, where $|Ł|$ is the volume of $Λ$ and $ΔF$ is the change in the appropriate free energy density, the same as in classical systems. However, in contrast with the classical case, where this formula holds at all temperatures and chemical potentials our proof is restricted to rarefied gases, both for the typical and observed density, at least for Bose or Fermi systems. The case of Boltzmann statistics with a bounded repulsive potential can be treated at all temperatures and densities. Fermions on a lattice in any dimension, or in the continuum in one dimension, can be treated at all densities and temperatures if the interaction is small enough (depending on density and temperature), provided one assumes periodic boundary conditions.

Renormalization Group, hidden symmetries and approximate Ward identities in the XYZ model, II

An expansion based on renormalization group methods for the spin correlation function in the z direction of the Heisenberg-Ising XYZ chain with an external magnetic field directed as the z axis is derived. Moreover, by using the hidden symmetries of the model, we show that the running coupling constants are small, if the coupling in the z direction is small enough, that a critical index appearing in the correlation function is exactly vanishing (because of an approximate Ward identity) and other properties, so obtaining a rather detailed description of the XYZ correlation function.

Renormalization Group, hidden symmetries and approximate Ward identities in the XYZ model, I

Using renormalization group methods, we study the Heisenberg-Ising XYZ chain in an external magnetic field directed as the z axis, in the case of small coupling J_3 in the z direction. We study the asymptotic behaviour of the spin space-time correlation function in the direction of the magnetic field and the singularities of its Fourier transform. The work is organized in two parts. In the present paper an expansion for the ground state energy and the effective potential is derived, which is convergent if the running coupling constants are small enough. In the subsequent paper, by using hidden symmetries of the model, we show that this condition is indeed verified, if J_3 is small enough, and we derive an expansion for the spin correlation function. We also prove, by means of an approximate Ward identity, that a critical index, related with the asymptotic behaviour of the correlation function, is exactly vanishing.

Melnikov's approximation dominance. Some examples

We continue a previous paper to show that Mel'nikov's first order formula for part of the separatrix splitting of a pendulum under fast quasi periodic forcing holds, in special examples, as an asymptotic formula in the forcing rapidity.

Peierls instability for the Holstein model

We consider the static Holstein model, describing a chain of Fermions interacting with a classical phonon field, when the interaction is weak and the density is a rational number. We show that the energy of the system, as a function of the phonon field, has two stationary points, defined up to a lattice translation, which are local minima in the space of fields periodic with period equal to the inverse of the density.

Pendulum: separatrix splitting

An exact expression for the determinant of the splitting matrix is derived: it allows us to analyze the asympotic behaviour needed to amend the large angles theorem proposed in Ann. Inst. H. Poincaré, B-60, 1, 1994. The asymptotic validity of Melnokov's formulae is proved for the class of models considered, which include polynomial perturbations.

Lindstedt series, ultraviolet divergences and Moser's theorem

Moser's invariant tori for a class of nonanalytic quasi integrable even hamiltonian systems are shown to be analytic in the perturbation parameter. We do so by exhibiting a summation rule for the divergent series (``Lindstedt series") that formally define them. We find additional cancellations taking place in the formal series, besides the ones already known and necessary in the analytic case (i.e. to prove convergence of Lindtsedt algorithm for Kolmogorov's invariant tori). The method is interpreted in terms of a non renormalizable quantum field theory, considerably more singular than the one we pointed out in the analytic case.

Methods for the analysis of the Lindstedt series for KAM tori and renormalizability in classical mechanics

This paper consists in a unified exposition of methods and techniques of the renormalization group approach to quantum field theory applied to classical mechanics, and in a review of results: (1) a proof of the KAM theorem, by studing the perturbative expansion (Lindstedt series) for the formal solution of the equations of motion; (2) a proof of a conjecture by Gallavotti about the renormalizability of isochronous hamiltonians, i.e. the possibility to add a term depending only on the actions in a hamiltonian function not verifying the anisochrony condition so that the resulting hamiltonian is integrable. Such results were obtained first by Eliasson; however the difficulties arising in the study of the perturbative series are very similar to the problems which one has to deal with in quantum field theory, so that the use the methods which have been envisaged and developed in the last twenty years exactly in order to solve them allows us to obtain unified proofs, both conceptually and technically. In the final part of the review, the original work of Eliasson is analyzed and exposed in detail; its connection with other proofs of the KAM theorem based on his method is elucidated.

Field theory and KAM tori

The parametric equations of KAM tori for a quasi integrable system, are shown to be one point Schwinger functions of a suitable euclidean quantum field theory on the torus. KAM theorem is equivalent to a ultraviolet stability theorem. A renormalization group treatment of the field theory leads to a resummation of the formal pertubation series and to an expansion in terms of new parameters (identified as a family of renormalization constants). The new parameters are analytic in the coupling (at small coupling): the breakdown of the tori at large coupling is speculated to be related to the crossing of a "critical" surface at a value where the renormalization constants are still finite. A mechanism for the possible universality of the singularities of parametric equations for the invariant tori, in their parameter dependence as well as in the coupling dependence, is proposed.}
