Twisted K-theory and K-theory of bundle gerbes

In this note we introduce the notion of bundle gerbe K-theory and investigate the relation to twisted K-theory. We provide some examples. Possible applications of bundle gerbe K-theory to the classification of D-brane charges in non-trivial backgrounds are discussed.

Semiclassical asymptotics and gaps in the spectra of magnetic Schroedinger operators

In this paper, we study an L2 version of the semiclassical approximation of magnetic Schroedinger operators with invariant Morse type potentials on covering spaces of compact manifolds. In particular, we are able to establish the existence of an arbitrary large number of gaps in the spectrum of these operators, in the semiclassical limit as the coupling constant goes to zero.

Twisted K-homology theory, twisted Ext-theory

These are notes on twisted K-homology theory and twisted Ext-theory from the C*-algebra viewpoint, part of a series of talks on ``C*-algebras, noncommutative geometry and K-theory'', primarily for physicists.

D-branes, B-fields and twisted K-theory

In this note we propose that D-brane charges, in the presence of a topologically non-trivial B-field, are classified by the K-theory of an infinite dimensional C^*-algebra. In the case of B-fields whose curvature is pure torsion our description is shown to coincide with that of Witten.

Quantum Hall Effect on the Hyperbolic Plane in the presence of disorder

We study both the continuous model and the discrete model of the integer quantum Hall effect on the hyperbolic plane in the presence of disorder, extending the results of an earlier paper [CHMM]. Here we model impurities, that is we consider the effect of a random or almost periodic potential as opposed to just periodic potentials. The Hall conductance is identified as a geometric invariant associated to an algebra of observables, which has plateaus at gaps in extended states of the Hamiltonian. We use the Fredholm modules defined in [CHMM] to prove the integrality of the Hall conductance in this case. We also prove that there are always only a finite number of gaps in extended states of any random discrete Hamiltonian. [CHMM] A. Carey, K. Hannabuss, V. Mathai and P. Quantum Hall Effect on the Hyperbolic Plane

In this paper, we study both the continuous model and the discrete model of the Quantum Hall Effect (QHE) on the hyperbolic plane. The Hall conductivity is identified as a geometric invariant associated to an imprimitivity algebra of observables. We define a twisted analogue of the Kasparov map, which enables us to use the pairing between $K$-theory and cyclic cohomology theory, to identify this geometric invariant with a topological index, thereby proving the integrality of the Hall conductivity in this case.

Determinant lines, von Neumann algebras and $L^2$ torsion

In this paper, we suggest a construction of determinant lines of finitely generated Hilbertian modules over finite von Neumann algebras. Nonzero elements of the determinant lines can be viewed as volume forms on the Hilbertian modules. Using this, we study both $L^2$ combinatorial and $L^2$ analytic torsion invariants associated to flat Hilbertian bundles over compact polyhedra and manifolds; we view them as volume forms on the reduced $L^2$ homology and cohomology. These torsion invariants specialize to the the classical Reidemeister-Franz torsion and the Ray-Singer torsion in the finite dimensional case. Under the assumption that the $L^2$ homology vanishes, the determinant line can be canonically identified with $\R$, and our $L^2$ torsion invariants specialize to the $L^2$ torsion invariants previously constructed by A.Carey, V.Mathai and J.Lott. We also show that a recent theorem of Burghelea et al. can be reformulated as stating equality between two volume forms (the combinatorial and the analytic) on the reduced $L^2$ cohomology.
