Criterion for the functional dissipativity of the Lamé operator

After introducing the concept of functional dissipativity of the Dirichlet problem in a domain $Ω\subset {\mathbb R}^N$ for systems of partial differential operators of the form $\partial_{h}({\mathscr A}^{hk}(x)\partial_{k})$ (${\mathscr A}^{hk}(x)$ being $m \times m$ matrices with complex valued $L^\infty$ entries), we find necessary and sufficient conditions for the functional dissipativity of the two-dimensional Lamé system. As an application of our theory we provide two regularity results for the displacement vector in the $N$-dimensional equilibrium problem, when the body is fixed along its boundary.

A survey of functional and $L^p$ dissipativity theory

Various notions of dissipativity type for partial differential operators and their applications are surveyed. We deal with functional dissipativity and its particular case $L^p$-dissipativity. Most of the results are due to the authors.

Computation of volume potentials over bounded domains via approximate approximations

We obtain cubature formulas of volume potentials over bounded domains combining the basis functions introduced in the theory of approximate approximations with their integration over the tangential-halfspace. Then the computation is reduced to the quadrature of one dimensional integrals over the halfline. We conclude the paper providing numerical tests which show that these formulas give very accurate approximations and confirm the predicted order of convergence.

Well-posed elliptic Neumann problems involving irregular data and domains

Nonlinear elliptic Neumann problems, possibly in irregular domains and with data affected by low integrability properties, are taken into account. Existence, uniqueness and continuous dependence on the data of generalized solutions are established under a suitable balance between the integrability of the datum and the (ir)regularity of the domain. The latter is described in terms of isocapacitary inequalities. Applications to various classes of domains are also presented.

Asymptotic treatment of perforated domains without homogenization

As a main result of the paper, we construct and justify an asymptotic approximation of Green's function in a domain with many small inclusions. Periodicity of the array of inclusions is not required. We start with an analysis of the Dirichlet problem for the Laplacian in such a domain to illustrate a method of meso scale asymptotic approximations for solutions of boundary value problems in multiply perforated domains. The asymptotic formula obtained involves a linear combination of solutions to certain model problems whose coefficients satisfy a linear algebraic system. The solvability of this system is proved under weak geometrical assumptions, and both uniform and energy estimates for the remainder term are derived. In the second part of the paper, the method is applied to derive an asymptotic representation of the Green's function in the same perforated domain. The important feature is the uniformity of the remainder estimate with respect to the independent variables.

A collection of sharp dilation invariant inequalities for differentiable functions

We find best constants in several dilation invariant integral inequalities involving derivatives of functions. Some of these inequalities are new and some were known without best constants. The contents: 1. Estimate for a quadratic form of the gradient, 2. Weighted Gårding inequality for the biharmonic operator, 3.Dilation invariant Hardy's inequality with remainder term, 4. Generalized Hardy-Sobolev inequality with sharp constant, 5. Hardy's inequality with sharp Sobolev remainder term.

Critical Hardy--Sobolev Inequalities

We consider Hardy inequalities in $I R^n$, $n \geq 3$, with best constant that involve either distance to the boundary or distance to a surface of co-dimension $k<n$, and we show that they can still be improved by adding a multiple of a whole range of critical norms that at the extreme case become precisely the critical Sobolev norm.

Approximate Approximations from scattered data

The aim of this paper is to extend the approximate quasi-interpolation on a uniform grid by dilated shifts of a smooth and rapidly decaying function on a uniform grid to scattered data quasi-interpolation. It is shown that high order approximation of smooth functions up to some prescribed accuracy is possible, if the basis functions, which are centered at the scattered nodes, are multiplied by suitable polynomials such that their sum is an approximate partition of unity. For Gaussian functions we propose a method to construct the approximate partition of unity and describe the application of the new quasi-interpolation approach to the cubature of multi-dimensional integral operators.
