Luttinger liquids with boundaries: Power-laws and energy scales

We present a study of the one-particle spectral properties for a variety of models of Luttinger liquids with open boundaries. We first consider the Tomonaga-Luttinger model using bosonization. For weak interactions the boundary exponent of the power-law suppression of the spectral weight close to the chemical potential is dominated by a term linear in the interaction. This motivates us to study the spectral properties also within the Hartree-Fock approximation. It already gives power-law behavior and qualitative agreement with the exact spectral function. For the lattice model of spinless fermions and the Hubbard model we present numerically exact results obtained using the density-matrix renormalization-group algorithm. We show that many aspects of the behavior of the spectral function close to the boundary can again be understood within the Hartree-Fock approximation. For the repulsive Hubbard model with interaction U the spectral weight is enhanced in a large energy range around the chemical potential. At smaller energies a power-law suppression, as predicted by bosonization, sets in. We present an analytical discussion of the crossover and show that for small U it occurs at energies exponentially (in -1/U) close to the chemical potential, i.e. that bosonization only holds on exponentially small energy scales. We show that such a crossover can also be found in other models.

Liouvillian Approach to the Integer Quantum Hall Effect Transition

We present a novel approach to the localization-delocalization transition in the integer quantum Hall effect. The Hamiltonian projected onto the lowest Landau level can be written in terms of the projected density operators alone. This and the closed set of commutation relations between the projected densities leads to simple equations for the time evolution of the density operators. These equations can be used to map the problem of calculating the disorder averaged and energetically unconstrained density-density correlation function to the problem of calculating the one-particle density of states of a dynamical system with a novel action. At the self-consistent mean-field level, this approach yields normal diffusion and a finite longitudinal conductivity. While we have not been able to go beyond the saddle point approximation analytically, we show numerically that the critical localization exponent can be extracted from the energetically integrated correlation function yielding $ν=2.33 \pm 0.05$ in excellent agreement with previous finite-size scaling studies.

Boundary effects on one-particle spectra of Luttinger liquids

We calculate one-particle spectra for a variety of models of Luttinger liquids with open boundary conditions. For the repulsive Hubbard model the spectral weight close to the boundary is enhanced in a large energy range around the chemical potential. A power law suppression, previously predicted by bosonization, only occurs after a crossover at energies very close to the chemical potential. Our comparison with exact spectra shows that the effects of boundaries can partly be understood within the Hartree-Fock approximation.

How universal is the one-particle Green's function of a Luttinger liquid?

The one-particle Green's function of the Tomonaga-Luttinger model for one-dimensional interacting Fermions is discussed. Far away from the origin of the plane of space-time coordinates the function falls off like a power law. The exponent depends on the direction within the plane. For a certain form of the interaction potential or within an approximated cut-off procedure the different exponents only depend on the strength of the interaction at zero momentum and can be expressed in terms of the Luttinger liquid parameters $K_ρ$ and $K_σ$ of the model at hand. For a more general interaction and directions which are determined by the charge velocity $v_ρ$ and spin velocity $v_σ$ the exponents also depend on the smoothness of the interaction at zero momentum and the asymptotic behavior of the Green's function is not given by the Luttinger liquid parameters alone. This shows that the physics of large space-time distances in Luttinger liquids is less universal than is widely believed.

Orthogonality catastrophe in a one-dimensional system of correlated electrons

We present a detailed numerical study of the orthogonality catastrophe exponent for a one-dimensional lattice model of spinless fermions with nearest neighbor interaction using the density matrix remormalization group algorithm. Keeping up to 1200 states per block we achieve a very great accuracy for the overlap which is needed to extract the orthogonality exponent reliably. We discuss the behavior of the exponent for three different kinds of a localized impurity. For comparison we also discuss the non-interacting case. In the weak impurity limit our results for the overlap confirm scaling behavior expected from perturbation theory and renormalization group calculations. In particular we find that a weak backward scattering component of the orthogonality exponent scales to zero for attractive interaction. In the strong impurity limit and for repulsive interaction we demonstrate that the orthogonality exponent cannot be extracted from the overlap for systems with up to 100 sites, due to finite size effects. This is in contradiction to an earlier interpretation given by Qin et al. based on numerical data for much smaller system sizes. Neverthless we find indirect evidence that the backward scattering contribution to the exponent scales to 1/16 based on predictions of boundary conformal field theory.

Improved transport equations including correlations for electron-phonon systems. Comparison with exact solutions in one dimension

We study transport equations for quantum many-particle systems in terms of correlations by applying the general formalism developed in an earlier paper to exactly soluble electron-phonon models. The one-dimensional models considered are the polaron model with a linear energy dispersion for the electrons and a finite number of electrons and the same model including a Fermi sea (Tomonaga-Luttinger model). The inclusion of two-particle correlations shows a significant and systematic improvement in comparison with the usual non-Markovian equations in Born approximation. For example, the improved equations take into account the renormalization of the propagation by the self-energies to second order in the coupling.

Fermion-boson transmutation and comparison of statistical ensembles in one dimension

The theoretical description of interacting fermions in one spatial dimension is simplified by the fact that the low energy excitations can be described in terms of bosonic degrees of freedom. This fermion-boson transmutation (FBT) which lies at the heart of the Luttinger liquid concept is presented in a way which does not require a knowledge of quantum field theoretical methods. As the basic facts can already be introduced for noninteracting fermions they are mainly discussed. As an application we use the FBT to present exact results for the low temperature thermodynamics and the occupation numbers in the microcanonical and the canonical ensemble. They are compared with the standard grand canonical results.

Spectral sum rules for the Tomonaga-Luttinger model

In connection with recent publications we discuss spectral sum rules for the Tomonaga-Luttinger model without using the explicit result for the one-electron Green's function. They are usefull in the interpretation of recent high resolution photoemission spectra of quasi-one-dimensional conductors. It is shown that the limit of infinite frequency and band cut\-off do not commute. Our result for arbitrary shape of the interaction potential generalizes an earlier discussion by Suzumura. A general analytical expression for the spectral function for wave vectors far from the Fermi wave vector $k_{F}$ is presented. Numerical spectra are shown to illustrate the sum rules.

Nonuniversal spectral properties of the Luttinger model

The one electron spectral functions for the Luttinger model are discussed for large but finite systems. The methods presented allow a simple interpretation of the results. For finite range interactions interesting nonunivesal spectral features emerge for momenta which differ from the Fermi points by the order of the inverse interaction range or more. For a simplified model with interactions only within the branches of right and left moving electrons analytical expressions for the spectral function are presented which allows to perform the thermodynamic limit. As in the general spinless model and the model including spin for which we present mainly numerical results the spectral functions do not approach the noninteracting limit for large momenta. The implication of our results for recent high resolution photoemission measurements on quasi one-dimensional conductors are discussed.
