Comparison of Origins of Re-Entrant Supercurrents at High In-Plane Magnetic Fields in Planar InAs-Al Josephson Junctions

Hybrid superconductor-semiconductor systems with large spin-orbit coupling are important platforms for realizing topological or triplet superconductivity. Planar Josephson junctions made using these materials are predicted to enter the topological state by tuning the phase difference between the two superconductors from 0 to $\pi$. The 0-$\pi$ transition can be driven by magnetic field through Zeeman splitting of subbands in the semiconductor. It is expected to manifest as a node, or a re-entrance, in the critical current. Here we present re-entrant switching currents from several InAs/Al planar Josephson junctions in high in-plane magnetic fields. We find that re-entrances in some devices conform with expected signatures for topological or 0-$\pi$ transitions. However, we show that the data can also be explained in terms of mode interference in the junction in the presence of disorder. We also present simulations of supercurrent interference under in-plane fields that can reproduce re-entrances due to corrugated weak link without invoking the Zeeman effect or topology.

Report on reproducibility in condensed matter physics

We present recommendations to improve reproducibility and replicability in condensed matter physics. This area of physics has consistently produced both fundamental insights into the workings of matter and transformative inventions. Our recommendations result from a collaboration that includes researchers from academia and government laboratories, scientific journalists, legal professionals, representatives of publishers, professional societies, and other experts. The group met in person in May 2024 at a conference at the University of Pittsburgh to discuss the growing challenges related to research reproducibility and replicability in condensed matter physics. In this report, we discuss best practices and policies at all stages of the scientific process to safeguard the value of condensed matter. We hope this report will lay the groundwork for a broader conversation to develop subfield-specific recommendations.

Matters Arising from S. Vaitiekenas et al., "Zero-bias peaks at zero magnetic field in ferromagnetic hybrid nanowires" Nature Physics 2021

In 2021 Nature Physics published a paper by Vaitiekenas, Liu, Krogstrup and Marcus titled "Zero-bias peaks at zero magnetic field in ferromagnetic hybrid nanowires". The paper reports low temperature transport measurements on semiconductor InAs nanowires with two partly overlapping shells -- a shell of EuS, a magnetic insulator, and a shell of Al, a metal that becomes superconducting at temperatures below 1.2K. The paper claims that (1) the data are consistent with induced topological superconductivity and Majorana zero modes (MZMs), and (2) that this is facilitated by the breaking of the time reversal symmetry through a direct magnetic interaction with the EuS shell. In this Matters Arising, we present an alternative explanation which is based on trivial effects that are likely to appear in the reported geometry. Specifically, first, we find that data the authors present in support of the topological superconductivity claim can originate from unintended quantum dots in their devices, a widely known likely explanation that is not being discussed in the paper. Second, our analysis of the setup, supported by our numerical micromagnetic simulations, shows similar effects could be obtained due to stray magnetic fields from the region of the EuS shell damaged during Al etching. This basic picture should come before the exotic interpretation in terms of magnetic exchange interaction with a ferromagnetic insulator.

Comment on "Ballistic Majorana Nanowire Devices" by Gul et al. Nature Nanotechnology 2018

This work re-analyzes Gul et al. Nature Nanotechnology 2018 "Ballistic Majorana nanowire devices" using fuller data from the original experiments released in 2023 on Zenodo. The authors have prepared a correction to their article that appeared in Nature Nanotechnology in 2024. However, the correction does not address the concerns we identify here. We demonstrate that the fuller data contain extensive evidence for quantum dots and disorder that are completely inconsistent with the authors' conclusion that they have achieved ballistic devices containing zero bias peaks of likely Majorana origin. We show how data selection, data cropping and undisclosed data processing played a role in composing the figures of the final published paper.

Phase transformation-induced superconducting aluminium-silicon alloy rings

The development of a materials platform that exhibits both superconducting and semiconducting properties is an important endeavour for a range of emerging quantum technologies. We investigate the formation of superconductivity in nanowires fabricated with silicon-on-insulator (SOI). Aluminium from deposited contact electrodes is found to interdiffuses with the Si nanowire structures to form an Al-Si alloy along the entire length of the predefined nanowire device over micron length scales at temperatures well below that of the Al-Si eutectic. The resultant transformed nanowire structures are layered in geometry with a continuous Al-Si alloy wire sitting on the buried oxide of the SOI and a residual Si cap sitting on top of the wire. The phase transformed material is conformal with any predefined device patterns and the resultant structures are exceptionally smooth-walled compared to similar nanowire devices formed by silicidation processes. The superconducting properties of a mesoscopic AlSi ring formed on a SOI platform are investigated. Low temperature magnetoresistance oscillations, quantized in units of the fluxoid, h/2e, are observed.

Non-Majorana states yield nearly quantized conductance in superconductor-semiconductor nanowire devices

Conductance at zero source-drain voltage bias in InSb nanowire/NbTiN superconductor devices exhibits peaks that are close to a quantized value of $2e^2/h$. The nearly quantized resonances evolve in the tunnel barrier strength, magnetic field and magnetic field orientation in a way consistent with Majorana zero modes. Our devices feature two tunnel probes on both ends of the nanowire separated by a 400 nm nanowire segment covered by the superconductor. We only find nearly quantized zero bias peaks localized to one end of the nanowire, while conductance dips are observed for the same parameters on the other end. This undermines the Majorana explanation as Majorana modes must come in pairs. We do identify states delocalized from end to end near zero magnetic field and at higher electron density, which is not in the basic Majorana regime. We lay out procedures for assessing the nonlocality of subgap wavefunctions and provide a classification of nanowire bound states based on their localization.

Signatures of Majorana fermions in hybrid superconductor-semiconductor nanowire devices

Majorana fermions are particles identical to their own antiparticles. They have been theoretically predicted to exist in topological superconductors. We report electrical measurements on InSb nanowires contacted with one normal (Au) and one superconducting electrode (NbTiN). Gate voltages vary electron density and define a tunnel barrier between normal and superconducting contacts. In the presence of magnetic fields of order 100 mT we observe bound, mid-gap states at zero bias voltage. These bound states remain fixed to zero bias even when magnetic fields and gate voltages are changed over considerable ranges. Our observations support the hypothesis of Majorana fermions in nanowires coupled to superconductors.
