Shape of nanosize superconducting grains: Does it influence pairing characteristics?

The Richardson exact solution for the reduced BCS Hamiltonian is applied to examine how sensitive are the pairing characteristics (condensation energy, spectroscopic gap, parity gap) to a specific configuration of single-electron energy levels in nanosize metallic grains. Using single-electron energy spectra in parallelepiped-shaped potential boxes with various volumes and aspect ratios as a model of energy levels in grains, we show that this sensitivity is extremely high. Just due to such an extreme sensitivity, the detailed shape of grains cannot be detected through the pairing characteristics, averaged over an ensemble of grains, even in the case of relatively small size dispersion within this ensemble. We analyse the effect of the pairing interaction on the excited-level spacings in superconducting grains and comment on the influence of shape-dependent fluctuations in single-electron energy spectra on the possibility to reveal this effect through tunnelling measurements.

Photoluminescence Spectra of Quantum Dots: Enhanced Efficiency of the Electron-Phonon Interaction

A theory of photoluminescence in semiconductor quantum dots is developed which relies on two key ingredients. First, it takes into account non-adiabaticity of the exciton-phonon system. Second, it includes the multimode dielectric model of LO-phonons and of the electron-phonon interaction in confined systems. The role of non-adiabaticity is shown to be of paramount importance in spherical quantum dots, where the lowest one-exciton state can be degenerate or quasi-degenerate. For various quantum dot structures, the calculated intensities of phonon satellites as a function of temperature, excitation energy and size of quantum dots are in a fair agreement with experimental data on photoluminescence.

Surface-induced magnetic anisotropy for impurity spins in granular AuFe films

The theory of the surface-induced anisotropy is extended to the case of granular films of dilute magnetic alloys. Since the surface-induced blocking of a magnetic-impurity spin appears to be very sensitive to the specific polycrystalline structure, we speculate that the apparent discrepancy between the experimental results of different groups for the size dependence of the Kondo resistivity can be linked to different microstructure of the samples. We apply our model to calculate the magnetization of impurity spins in small AuFe grains and to interpret the experimental data on the anomalous Hall effect in thin Fe doped Au films.

Temperature Dependence of the Cyclotron Mass in n-Type CdS

Recent cyclotron resonance experiments in n-type CdS at ultra-high magnetic fields have revealed a pronounced maximum of the electron cyclotron mass as a function of temperature. In order to interpret these data, we calculate the magneto-absorption spectra of polarons in n-CdS using the arbitrary-coupling approach. We show that in high magnetic fields the polaron effects beyond the weak-coupling approximation clearly reveal themselves in the magneto-optical absorption even at relatively small values of the Froehlich coupling constant. In particular, those effects result in a non-monotonous behaviour of the cyclotron mass as a function of temperature. We extend the theory to take into account a combined effect of several scattering mechanisms on the magneto-absorption spectra. The extended theory allows us to interpret quantitatively the experimentally observed behaviour of the cyclotron mass in CdS.

Shape-induced magnetic anisotropy in dilute magnetic alloys

We extend the theory of the surface-induced magnetic anisotropy to mesoscopic samples with arbitrary geometry. The shape-induced anisotropy of impurity spins in small brick-shaped grains of dilute magnetic alloys is studied in detail. The surface-induced blocking of a magnetic-impurity spin is shown to be very sensitive to geometric parameters of a grain. This implies that the apparent discrepancy between the experimental data of different groups on the size dependence of the Kondo resistivity can result from different microstructure of the used samples. In order to interpret recent experimental data on the anomalous Hall effect in thin polycrystalline Fe doped Au films, we analyse the magnetisation of impurity spins as a function of the impurity position and of the grain shape.

Quantum transport in the cylindrical nanosize silicon-based MOSFET

A model is developed for a detailed investigation of the current flowing through a cylindrical nanosize MOSFET with a close gate electrode. The quantum mechanical features of the lateral charge transport are described by Wigner distribution function which is explicitly dealing with electron scattering due to acoustic phonons and acceptor impurities. A numerical simulation is carried out to obtain a set of I-V characteristics for various channel lengths. It is demonstrated that inclusion of the collision term in the numerical simulation is important for low values of the source-drain voltage. The calculations have further shown that the scattering leads to an increase of the electron density in the channel thereby smoothing out the threshold kink in I-V characteristics. An analysis of the electron phase-space distribution shows that scattering does not prevent electrons from flowing through the channel as a narrow stream, and that features of both ballistic and diffusive transport may be observed simultaneously.

Impurity spin magnetization of thin Fe doped Au films

In order to probe the influence of the surface-induced anisotropy on the impurity spin magnetization, we measure the anomalous Hall effect in thin AuFe films at magnetic fields up to 15 T. The observed suppression of the anomalous Hall resistivity at low fields as well as the appearance of a minimum in the differential Hall resistivity at higher fields can be explained by our theoretical model which takes into account the influence of a polycrystalline film structure on the surface-induced anisotropy. Our results imply that the apparent discrepancy between different experimental results for the size effects in dilute magnetic alloys can be linked to a different microstructure of the samples.
