Water, vacancies, and competing exchange interactions in Prussian blue analogues: a neutron diffraction study of field and dehydration-driven magnetic transitions

We report a neutron diffraction study of the structural and magnetic properties of a family of ferro- and ferrimagnetic Prussian blue analogues (PBAs), $A_4$[Fe(CN)$_6$]$_{2.7}$ ($A$ = Co, Mn, Ni), Rb$_2$Ni$_4$[Fe(CN)$_6$]$_{3.3}$, and Mn$_4$[Cr(CN)$_6$]$_{2.7}$, as a function of temperature (2--450~K) and applied magnetic field. All bimetallic compounds of the Fm$\overline{3}$m family exhibit a broad diffuse feature at low scattering angle, which we identify, through comparison with the cation-stabilized Rb$_2$NiFe framework, as an intrinsic signature of correlated vacancies and their associated interstitial water. High-temperature diffraction reveals a continuous crossover from positive to negative thermal expansion in CoFe and MnFe upon dehydration, while NiFe remains structurally robust up to 450~K. At low temperature, all compounds order in a collinear ferrimagnetic state with propagation vector $\mathbf{k}=(0,0,0)$, except MnFe, which adopts a partially frustrated magnetic structure with $\mathbf{k}=(1,0,0)$. A moderate magnetic field of $B_c = 1.3$~T drives a spin reorientation in MnFe toward the collinear $\mathbf{k}=(0,0,0)$ ferrimagnetic state common to the other compounds; the same transition is independently induced by dehydration. A minimal Heisenberg model shows that this transition results from a near-compensation between antiferromagnetic Mn--Fe coupling and a geometrically frustrated antiferromagnetic Mn--Mn interaction on the face-centered-cubic Mn sublattice, placing MnFe in the vicinity of a magnetic compensation point. These results resolve a longstanding ambiguity in the interpretation of the Fe $K$-edge XMCD response of MnFe-based PBAs, and establish water content as a key parameter controlling both the structural and magnetic stability of this family of materials, with direct relevance to their use as battery electrodes.

Stabilization of a non-superconducting, orthorhombic phase by over-hydrogenating LaFeSiH

Chemical composition provides a powerful route to tune the electronic ground state of iron-based superconductors and other quantum materials, yet access to highly doped phases remains limited. Here we demonstrate that high-pressure thermal decomposition of hydrogen-rich precursors enables over-hydrogenation of LaFeSi. Using anthracene, we synthesize tetragonal superconducting LaFeSiH, including a single hydrogen site, while ammonia borane yields a structurally distorted over-hydrogenated phase, LaFeSiH1+x, with an orthorhombic structure. Chemical analysis reveal excess hydrogen (x ~ 0.6), implying a second H site in LaFeSiH1.6 whose localization and occupancy are determined by neutron diffraction. In contrast to metallic LaFeSi and superconducting LaFeSiH, orthorhombic LaFeSiH1.6 exhibits semiconductor-like behavior. Upon hydrogen release near 100 {\deg}C, it transforms into tetragonal superconducting LaFeSiH1+{\delta} ({\delta} << 0.6). These results establish the chemical flexibility of the layered LaFeSiX (X = H, O, F) family and provide access to a high hydrogen-doping regime, creating new opportunities to investigate superconductivity in Fe-based silicides.

Magnetic and structural properties of the iron silicide superconductor LaFeSiH

The magnetic and structural properties of the recently discovered pnictogen/chalcogen-free superconductor LaFeSiH ($T_c\simeq10$~K) have been investigated by $^{57}$Fe synchrotron M{\"o}ssbauer source (SMS) spectroscopy, x-ray and neutron powder diffraction and $^{29}$Si nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR). No sign of long range magnetic order or local moments has been detected in any of the measurements and LaFeSiH remains tetragonal down to 2 K. The activated temperature dependence of both the NMR Knight shift and the relaxation rate $1/T_1$ is analogous to that observed in strongly overdoped Fe-based superconductors. These results, together with the temperature-independent NMR linewidth, show that LaFeSiH is an homogeneous metal, far from any magnetic or nematic instability, and with similar Fermi surface properties as strongly overdoped iron pnictides. This raises the prospect of enhancing the $T_c$ of LaFeSiH by reducing its carrier concentration through appropriate chemical substitutions. Additional SMS spectroscopy measurements under hydrostatic pressure up to 18.8~GPa found no measurable hyperfine field.

Superconductivity in the crystallogenide LaFeSiO$_{1-δ}$ with squeezed FeSi layers

Pnictogens and chalcogens are both viable anions for promoting Fe-based superconductivity and intense research activity in the related families has established systematic correlation between the Fe-anion height and the superconducting critical temperature $T_c$, with an optimum Fe-anion height of $\sim$ 1.38 Å. Here, we report the discovery of superconductivity in a novel compound LaFeSiO$_{1-δ}$ that incorporates a crystallogen element, Si, and challenges the above picture: considering the strongly squeezed Fe-Si height of 0.94 Å, the superconducting transition at $T_{c}$ = 10 K is unusually high. In the normal state, the resistivity displays non-Fermi-liquid behavior while NMR experiments evidence weak antiferromagnetic fluctuations. According to first-principles calculations, the Fermi surface of this material is dominated by hole pockets without nesting properties, which explains the strongly suppressed tendency towards magnetic order and suggests that the emergence of superconductivity materializes in a distinct set-up, as compared to the standard $s_\pm$- and $d$-wave electron-pocket-based situations. These properties and its simple-to-implement synthesis make LaFeSiO$_{1-δ}$ a particularly promising platform to study the interplay between structure, electron correlations and superconductivity.

$A$-cation control of magnetoelectric quadrupole order in $A$(TiO)Cu$_4$(PO$_4$)$_4$ ($A$ = Ba, Sr, and Pb)

Ferroic magnetic quadrupole order exhibiting macroscopic magnetoelectric activity is discovered in the novel compound $A$(TiO)Cu$_4$(PO$_4$)$_4$ with $A$ = Pb, which is in contrast with antiferroic quadrupole order observed in the isostructural compounds with $A$ = Ba and Sr. Unlike the famous lone-pair stereochemical activity which often triggers ferroelectricity as in PbTiO$_3$, the Pb$^{2+}$ cation in Pb(TiO)Cu$_4$(PO$_4$)$_4$ is stereochemically inactive but dramatically alters specific magnetic interactions and consequently switches the quadrupole order from antiferroic to ferroic. Our first-principles calculations uncover a positive correlation between the degree of $A$-O bond covalency and a stability of the ferroic quadrupole order.

Determination of the magnetic structure of CePt$_2$In$_7$ by means of neutron diffraction

The magnetic structure of the heavy fermion antiferromagnet CePt$_2$In$_7$ is determined using neutron diffraction. We find a magnetic wave vector $\mathbf{q}_M = (1/2,1/2,1/2)$, which is temperature independent up to $T_N =$ 5.5 K. A staggered moment of 0.45(1)$μ_B$ at 2 K resides on the Ce ion. The nearest-neighbor moments in the tetragonal basal plane are aligned antiferromagnetically. The moments rotate by 90$^\circ$ from one CeIn$_3$ plane to another along the $c$ axis. A much weaker satellite peak with an incommensurate magnetic wave vector $\mathbf{q}_M = (1/2,1/2,0.47)$ seems to develop at low temperature. However, the experimental data available so far are not sufficient to draw a definitive conclusion about the possible co-existence of commensurate and incommensurate magnetic structures in this material.

Effect of the isoelectronic substitution of Sb for As on the magnetic and structural properties of LaFe(As1-xSbx)O

The antiferromagnetic order and structural distortion in the LaFe(As1-xSbx)O system have been investigated by powder neutron diffraction and physical properties measurements. Polycrystalline samples of LaFe(As1-xSbx)O (x<0.5) were prepared using solid state synthesis at ambient and high pressure. We find that the isoelectronic substitution of Sb for As decreases the structural and magnetic transition temperatures but, contrary to the effects of phosphorus substitution, superconductivity is not induced. Instead a slight increase in the Fe magnetic moment is observed.

EXAFS study of lead-free relaxor ferroelectric BaTi(1-x)Zr(x)O3 at the Zr K-edge

Extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) experiments at the Zr K-edge were carried out on perovskite relaxor ferroelectrics BaTi(1-x)Zr(x)O3 (BTZ) (x = 0.25, 0.30, 0.35), and on BaZrO3 for comparison. Structural information up to 4.5 A around the Zr atoms is obtained, revealing that the local structure differs notably from the average Pm-3m cubic structure deduced from X-ray diffraction. In particular, our results show that the distance between Zr atoms and their first oxygen neighbors is independent of the Zr substitution rate x and equal to that measured in BaZrO3, while the X-ray cubic cell parameter increases linearly with x. Furthermore, we show that the Zr atoms tend to segregate in Zr-rich regions. We propose that the relaxor behavior in BTZ is linked to random elastic fields generated by this particular chemical arrangement, rather than to random electric fields as is the case in most relaxors.
