Fresh Look at Polarized Deuterons at the Nuclotron/NICA \& HIAF and Beyond

Being a spin-1 particle, the deuteron, when polarized, offers access to a wide range of interesting tensor observables. A quest for tensor asymmetries is at the heart of the spin physics with polarized deuterons at future colliders, and calls for frequent tensor polarization flips in storage rings or in deuterium targets. Here we focus on the JEDI developed technique of the Fourier analysis of the horizontal polarization oscillations under continuous radiofrequency driven spin flips. The so generated time-stamped oscillating helicity of stored particles paves the way to the nucleon/nucleus spin structure studies and to the search for the parity violation. Simultaneously a whole set of tensor spin asymmetries, including the off-diagonal ones needed for searches for the T-violation beyond the Standard Model, will be produced. A crucial ingredient is a long polarization lifetime, and we report the first analytic treatment of decoherence of the tensor polarization under continuous radiofrequency spin flips. Our principal conclusion is that at low- and intermediate-energy accelerators the deuteron polarization lifetime could be in the ballpark of several hours, making the oscillating polarization approach viable at Nuclotron/NICA and HIAF. We comment on a utility of the flattop spin-tensor dichroism via oscillations in the cross section of interaction of deuterons in the internal target as a monitor of the tensor polarization. Simultaneously, the dichroism effect can be used for measuring the spin precession frequences and as a comagnetometer to synchronize spin phases of colliding bunches in a collider.

Nuclotron internal target polarimeter for the measurements of the deuteron and proton beam polarization

Studies of spin-dependent effects at the Nuclotron/NICA accelerator complex at JINR require precise measurements of the deuteron and proton beam polarization. The vector polarization of the deuteron beam was measured at the energies of 200, 500, 550, and 650 MeV/nucleon by a detection system of scintillation counters placed at the Nuclotron internal target. Considering the deuteron beam as a beam of weakly bound protons and neutrons, the asymmetries of scattering of protons from deuterons on polyethylene and carbon targets were determined. The polarization of the polarized proton beam accelerated for the first time at the Nuclotron up to 500 MeV was also measured.

About possibility to observe spin dichroism effect (the effect of tensor polarization acquiring) for the effect of tensor polarization acquiring by a nonpolarized deuteron beam passing through the nonpolarized internal target of Nuclotron

Deuteron passage through a nonpolarized target is accompanied by birefringence effect which reveals as diverse phenomena, namely: rotation of spin and tensor polarization about the momentum direction, spin oscillations, vector polarization conversion to tensor that and vice versa, spin dichroism. Possibility to study deuteron spin dichroism effect i.e. the effect of tensor polarization acquiring by a nonpolarized deuteron beam moving in NuclotronM and passing through its internal target is discussed.

Design and implementation of the constant fraction discriminator for glass MRPC timing

The analog front-end electronics based on the constant fraction discrimination method is designed and optimized for the Multigap Resistive Plate Chamber (MRPC) timing measurements. The total time resolution of 40 ps has been obtained for 10 and 12 gaps MRPCs using cosmic setup and a muon beam at the IHEP U-70 accelerator in Protvino, which complies with the conditions of the SPD experiment at NICA.

Spin Physics Detector at NICA

The Spin Physics Detector is one of two large setups at the NICA collider under construction at JINR (Dubna). The ultimate goal of the studies at SPD is the measurement of different spin observables in polarized proton-proton and deuteron-deuteron collisions sensitive to the polarized gluon structure of the nucleon at the luminosity up to 10$^{32}$ $cm^{-2}\cdot s^{-1}$ and $\sqrt{s}$ up to 27 GeV. SPD will consist of the superconducting magnetic system, silicon tracker, straw mini-drift tubes tracker, time-of-flight system, electromagnetic "shashlyk"- type calorimeter, muon (range) and local-polarimetry systems. The high performance free-streaming DAQ system will be able to operate at the collision rate up to 4 MHz.

Deuteron analyzing powers $A_y$, $A_{yy}$ and $A_{xx}$ in dp-elastic scattering at large transverse momenta

The results on the the vector $A_y$, $A_{yy}$ and $A_{xx}$ analyzing powers in deuteron-proton elastic scattering at large scattering angles are presented. These data were obtained at internal target at JINR Nuclotron in the energy range 400-1800 MeV using polarized deuteron beam from new polarized ion source. New data on the deuteron analyzing powers in the wide energy range demonstrate the sensitivity to the short-range spin structure of the isoscalar nucleon-nucleon correlations.

Possible studies at the first stage of the NICA collider operation with polarized and unpolarized proton and deuteron beams

This paper contains suggestions for experiments with usage of the Spin Physics Detector (SPD) at the first stage of the SPD NICA Programme developing at JINR. Double polarized pp-, dd- and pd- collisions at c.m.s. NN energies of 3.4-10 GeV, which will be accessible at the initial stage of experiments, allow one to study spin dependence of the NN interaction, search for multiquark states at double strangeness, charm and beauty thresholds, study the short-range structure of the deuteron. Double polarized pd scattering offer a possibility to test the Standard Model through the search for T-invariance violation.

High-rate glass MRPC for fixed target experiments at Nuclotron

A Multi-gap Resistive Plate Chamber (MRPC) equipped with heaters to improve the counting rate capability was designed for the BM@N experiment in Dubna. The measurements were performed using a muon beam at IHEP U-70 accelerator in Protvino. The MRPC at 40$^0$C tolerates counting rate up to 6 kHz/cm$^2$ with time resolution ~65 ps and efficiency ~95\% which complies with the conditions of the experiment.

Measurement of the deuteron beam polarization at internal target at Nuclotron for DSS experiment

The current deuteron beam polarimetry at Nuclotron is provided by the Internal Target polarimeter based on the use of the asymmetry in dp- elastic scattering at large angles in the cms at 270 MeV. The upgraded deuteron beam polarimeter has been used obtain the vector and tensor polarization during 2016/2017 runs for the DSS experimental program. The polarimeter has been used also for tuning of the polarized ion source parameters for 6 different spin modes.

First results on the measurements of the proton beam polarization at internal target at Nuclotron

The spin program at NICA using SPD and MPD requires high intensity polarized proton beam with high value of the beam polarization. First results on the measurements of the proton beam polarization performed at internal target at Nuclotron are reported. The polarization of the proton beam provided by new source of polarized ions has been measured at 500 MeV using quasielastic proton-proton scattering and DSS setup at internal target. The obtained value of the vertical polarization of ~35 % is consistent with the calculations taking into account the current magnetic optics of the Nuclotron injection line.

Setup for the Nuclotron beam time structure measurements

The setups for precise measurements of the time structure of Nuclotron internal and slowly extracted beams are described in both hardware and software aspects. The CAMAC hardware is based on the use of the standard CAMAC modules developed and manufactured at JINR. The data acquisition system software is implemented using the ngdp framework under the Unix-like operating system (OS) FreeBSD to allow the easy network distribution of the online data. It is demonstrated that the described setups are suitable for the continuous beam quality monitoring during the experiments performed at Nuclotron.

Investigation of avalanche photodiodes radiation hardness for baryonic matter studies

Modern avalanche photodiodes (APDs) with high gain are good device candidates for light readout from detectors applied in relativistic heavy ion collisions experiments. The results of the investigations of the APDs properties from Zecotek, Ketek and Hamamatsu manufacturers after irradiation using secondary neutrons from cyclotron facility U120M at NPI of ASCR in Řež are presented. The results of the investigations can be used for the design of the detectors for the experiments at NICA and FAIR.

Study of the dp-elastic scattering at 2 GeV

The results on the measurements of dp-elastic scattering cross section at the energy 2 GeV at Internal Target Station at the Nuclotron JINR are reported. The data were obtained for the angular range of 70-107 deg. in the c.m.s. by using CH2 and C targets. The results are compared with the existing data and with the theoretical calculations based on the relativistic multiple scattering theory.

Hadron calorimeter module prototype for baryonic matter studies at Nuclotron

The prototype of the hadron calorimeter module consisting of 66 scintillator/lead layers with the 15x15 cm^2 cross section and 5 nuclear interaction lengths has been designed and produced for the zero degree calorimeter of the BM@N experiment. The prototype has been tested with high energy muon beam of the U-70 accelerator at IHEP. The results of the beam test for different types of photo multipliers and light guides are presented. The results of the Monte-Carlo simulation of the calorimeter response and energy resolution are presented for the 2-16 GeV protons.

Angular distributions of the vector Ay and tensor Ayy, Axx, Axz analyzing powers in the dd->3Hp reaction at 200 MeV

A complete set of analyzing powers for the dd->3Hp reaction at the kinetic beam energy of 200 MeV has been measured in the full angular range in the c.m. frame. The observed signs of the tensor analyzing powers Ayy, Axx, and Axz at forward and backward directions have clearly demonstrated the sensitivity to the ratio of the D- and S-wave components of the triton and deuteron, respectively. The new high-precision data are compared with the prediction of the relativistic multiple-scattering model by using standard wave functions of the three-nucleon bound state and of the deuteron.

Measurement of the vector and tensor analyzing powers for dp- elastic scattering at 880 MeV

The vector Ay and tensor analyzing powers Ayy and Axx for dp- elastic scattering were measured at Td = 880 MeV over the c.m. angular range from 60 to 140 degrees at the JINR Nuclotron. The data are compared with predictions of different theoretical models based on the use of nucleon-nucleon forces only. The observed discrepancies of the measured analyzing powers from the calculations require the consideration of additional mechanisms.

The light nuclei spin structure from hadronic channels at intermediate energies

The investigation of the d, 3H and 3He spin structure has been performed at the RIKEN(Japan) accelerator research facility and VBLHEP(JINR) using both polarized and unpolarized deuteron beams. The experimental results on the analyzing powers studies in dp- elastic scattering, d(d,3H)p and d(d,3He)n reactions are presented. The vector and tensor analyzing powers for dp-elastic scattering at 880 and 2000 MeV are obtained at the Nuclotron(VBLHEP). The result on the analyzing powers Ay, Ayy of the deuteron at 2000 MeV are compared with relativistic multiple scattering model calculations. The data on the tensor analyzing powers for the d(d,3H)p and d(d,3He)n reactions obtained at Ed = 200 and 270 MeV demonstrate the sensitivity to the 3H, 3He and deuteron spin structure. The essential disagreements between the experimental results and the theoretical calculations within the one-nucleon exchange model framework are observed. The wide experimental program on the study of the polarization effects in dp- elastic scattering, dp-nonmesonic breakup, d(d,3He)n, d(d,3H)p and d(3He,4He)p reactions using internal and extracted beam at Nuclotron is discussed.
