Remarks on Entanglement for Fuzzy Geometry and Gravity

We consider defining a fuzzy space by a specific state in a fermionic field theory in terms of which all the observables for the space can be evaluated. This allows for a definition of entanglement for a fuzzy space by direct integration of the fields over a certain region. Even though the resulting formula for the entanglement entropy (EE) is similar to what has been used in the quantum Hall effect, our derivation provides a novel perspective. We also review and strengthen the arguments for the EE to be described by a generalized Chern-Simons form.

Entanglement Entropy and Matter-Gravity Couplings for Fuzzy Geometry

In this talk I discuss some features of the entanglement entropy for fuzzy geometry, focusing on its dependence on the background fields and the spin connection of the emergent continuous manifold in a large $N$ limit. Using the Landau-Hall paradigm for fuzzy geometry, this is argued to be given by a generalized Chern-Simons form, making a point of connection with the thermodynamic view of gravity. Matter-gravity couplings are also considered in the same framework; they naturally lead to certain specific nonminimal couplings involving powers of the curvature.

Gürsey, Groups & Fluids

Feza Gürsey was a brilliant physicist who loved symmetries and beautiful mathematical structures such as group theory and division algebras. In this centenary year, I give a brief review of some of his contributions and then zero-in on group theory and discuss how it can give us a new perspective on a centuries-old topic, namely, fluid dynamics, including new facets such as the chiral magnetic effect. \vskip .1in \noindent This is a slightly edited and enhanced version of a colloquium at the Middle East Technical University on December 9, 2021, which was organized in celebration of the centenary of Feza Gürsey. The video of the presentation can be accessed by following the link given at http://www.physics.metu.edu.tr/Department/FezaGursey2021 or by clicking https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DstVVuOlqGk for direct access.

Superselection, Boundary Algebras and Duality in Gauge Theories

We consider the generators of gauge transformations with test functions which do not vanish on the boundary of a spacelike region of interest. These are known to generate the edge degrees of freedom in a gauge theory. In this paper, we augment these by introducing the dual or magnetic analogue of such operators. We then study the algebra of these operators, focusing on implications for the superselection sectors of the gauge theory. A manifestly duality-invariant action is also considered, from which alternate descriptions which are $SL(2, \mathbb{Z})$ transforms of each other can be obtained. We also comment on a number of issues related to local charges, definition of confinement and the appearance of interesting mathematical structures such as the Drinfel'd double and the Manin triple.

Uncertainties in Quantum Measurements: A Quantum Tomography

The observables associated with a quantum system $S$ form a non-commutative algebra ${\mathcal A}_S$. It is assumed that a density matrix $ρ$ can be determined from the expectation values of observables. But $\mathcal A_S$ admits inner automorphisms $a\mapsto uau^{-1},\; a,u\in {\mathcal A}_S$, $u^*u=u^*u=1$, so that its individual elements can be identified only up to unitary transformations. So since $\mathrm{Tr} ρ(uau^*)= \mathrm{Tr} (u^*ρu)a$, only the spectrum of $ρ$, or its characteristic polynomial, can be determined in quantum mechanics. In local quantum field theory, $ρ$ cannot be determined at all, as we shall explain. However, abelian algebras do not have inner automorphisms, so the measurement apparatus can determine mean values of observables in abelian algebras ${\mathcal A}_M\subset {\mathcal A}_S$ ($M$ for measurement, $S$ for system). We study the uncertainties in extending $ρ|_{{\mathcal A}_M}$ to $ρ|_{{\mathcal A}_S}$ (the determination of which means measurement of ${\mathcal A}_S$) and devise a protocol to determine $ρ|_{{\mathcal A}_S}\equiv ρ$ by determining $ρ|_{{\mathcal A}_M}$ for different choices of ${\mathcal A}_M$. The problem we formulate and study is a generalization of the Kadison-Singer theorem. We give an example where the system $S$ is a particle on a circle and the experiment measures the abelian algebra of a magnetic field $B$ coupled to $S$. The measurement of $B$ gives information about the state $ρ$ of the system $S$ due to operator mixing. Associated uncertainty principles for von Neumann entropy are discussed in the appendix, adapting the earlier work of Białynicki-Birula and Mycielski to the present case.

Matter-gravity coupling for fuzzy geometry and the Landau-Hall problem

We consider a set of physical degrees of freedom coupled to a finite-dimensional Hilbert space, which may be taken as modeling a fuzzy space or as the lowest Landau level of a Landau-Hall problem. These may be viewed as matter fields on a fuzzy space. Sequentially generalizing to arbitrary backgrounds, we argue that the effective action is given by the Chern-Simons form associated with the Dirac index density (with gauge and gravitational fields), with an abelian gauge field shifted by the Poincaré-Cartan form for matter dynamics. The result is an action for matter fields where the Lagrangian is integrated with a density which is a specific polynomial in the curvatures.

Topological Terms and Diffeomorphism Anomalies in Fluid Dynamics and Sigma Models

The requirement of diffeomorphism symmetry for the target space can lead to anomalous commutators for the energy-momentum tensor for sigma models and for fluid dynamics, if certain topological terms are added to the action. We analyze several examples . A particular topological term is shown to lead to the known effective hydrodynamics of a dense collection of vortices, i.e. the vortex fluid theory in 2+1 dimensions. The possibility of a similar vortex fluid in 3+1 dimensions, as well as a fluid of knots and links, with possible extended diffeomorphism algebras is also discussed.

Entanglement for Quantum Hall states and a Generalized Chern-Simons Form

We analyze some features of the entanglement entropy for an integer quantum Hall state ($ν=1 $) in comparison with ideas from relativistic field theory and noncommutative geometry. The spectrum of the modular operator, for a restricted class of states, is shown to be similar to the case of field theory or a type ${\rm III}_1$ von Neumann algebra. We present arguments that the main part of the dependence of the entanglement entropy on background fields and geometric data such as the spin connection is given by a generalized Chern-Simons form. Implications of this result for bringing together ideas of noncommutative geometry, entropy and gravity are briefly commented upon.

Landau-Hall States and Berezin-Toeplitz Quantization of Matrix Algebras

We argue that the Landau-Hall states provide a suitable framework for formulating the Berezin-Toeplitz quantization of classical functions on a Kähler phase space. We derive the star-products for such functions in this framework and generalize the Berezin-Toeplitz quantization to matrix-valued classical functions. We also comment on how this is related to different calculations of the effective action for Hall systems.

Sasakians and the Geometry of a Mass Term

A gauge-invariant mass term for nonabelian gauge fields in two dimensions can be expressed as the Wess-Zumino-Witten (WZW) action. Hard thermal loops in the gauge theory in four dimensions at finite temperatures generate a screening mass for some components of the gauge field. This can be expressed in terms of the WZW action using the bundle of complex structures (for Euclidean signature) or the bundle of lightcones over Minkowski space. We show that a dynamically generated mass term in three dimensions can be put within the same general framework using using the bundle of Sasakian structures.

Aspects of Boundary Conditions for Nonabelian Gauge Theories

The boundary values of the time-component of the gauge potential form externally specifiable data characterizing a gauge theory. We point out some consequences such as reduced symmetries, bulk currents for manifolds with disjoint boundaries and some nuances of how the charge algebra is realized.

Magnetic Field and Curvature Effects on Pair Production II: Vectors and Implications for Chromodynamics

We calculate the pair production rates for spin-$1$ or vector particles on spaces of the form $M \times {\mathbb R}^{1,1}$ with $M$ corresponding to ${\mathbb R}^2$ (flat), $S^2$ (positive curvature) and $H^2$ (negative curvature), with and without a background (chromo)magnetic field on $M$. Beyond highlighting the effects of curvature and background magnetic field, this is particularly interesting since vector particles are known to suffer from the Nielsen-Olesen instability, which can dramatically increase pair production rates. The form of this instability for $S^2$ and $H^2$ is obtained. We also give a brief discussion of how our results relate to ideas about confinement in nonabelian theories.

Magnetic Field and Curvature Effects on Pair Production I: Scalars and Spinors

The pair production rates for spin-zero and spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ particles are calculated on spaces of the form $M \times {\mathbb R}^{1,1}$ with $M$ corresponding to ${\mathbb R}^2$ (flat), $T^2$ (flat, compactified), $S^2$ (positive curvature) and $H^2$ (negative curvature), with and without a background magnetic field on $M$. The motivation is to elucidate the effects of curvature and background magnetic field. Contrasting effects for positive and negative curvature on the two cases of spin are obtained. For positive curvature, we find enhancement for spin-zero and suppression for spin-$\frac{1}{2}$, with the opposite effect for negative curvature.

Casimir Effect in (2+1)-dimensional Yang-Mills Theory as a Probe of the Magnetic Mass

We consider the Casimir effect in a gauge-invariant Hamiltonian formulation of nonabelian gauge theories in (2+1) dimensions, for an arbitrary gauge group. We show that the result is in good agreement with recent lattice simulations. We also argue that the Casimir effect may be viewed as a good probe of magnetic screening effects in (3+1)-dimensional gauge theories at high temperatures.

An Action for the Infrared Regime of Gauge Theories and the Problem of Color Transformations

It has been known for a while that there is spontaneous breaking of Lorentz symmetry in the nonzero charged sectors of quantum electrodynamics due to the infrared problem of soft photons. More recently, it has also been suggested that similar results hold for color transformations in a nonabelian gauge theory. Here we show that an action where a diffeomorphism has been carried out for the part describing hard gauge particles and matter fields can be used to analyze these issues. In addition to rederiving old results in this formalism, we also show that color transformations cannot be unitarily implemented on perturbative gluon states if gluon fields of arbitrarily low energy are allowed. Implications for confinement and mass gap are briefly commented upon.

Gauge-invariant Variables and Entanglement Entropy

The entanglement entropy (EE) of gauge theories in three spacetime dimensions is analyzed using manifestly gauge-invariant variables defined directly in the continuum. Specifically, we focus on the Maxwell, Maxwell-Chern-Simons (MCS), and nonabelian Yang-Mills theories. Special attention is paid to the analysis of edge modes and their contribution to EE. The contact term is derived without invoking the replica method and its physical origin is traced to the phase space volume measure for the edge modes. The topological contribution to the EE for the MCS case is calculated. For all the abelian cases, the EE presented in this paper agrees with known results in the literature. The EE for the nonabelian theory is computed in a gauge-invariant gaussian approximation, which incoprorates the dynamically generated mass gap. A formulation of the contact term for the nonabelian case is also presented.

Actions for particles and strings and Chern-Simons gravity

We consider actions for particles and strings, including twistorial descriptions on 4d Minkowski and AdS$_5$ spacetimes from the point of view of co-adjoint orbits for the isometry group. We also consider the collective coordinate dynamics of singular solutions in Chern-Simons (CS) theories and CS theories of gravity. This is a generalization of the work of Einstein, Infeld and Hoffmann and also has potential points of contact with fluid-gravity correspondence.

The Geometry of Quantum Hall Effect: An Effective Action for all Dimensions

We present a general formula for the topological part of the effective action for quantum Hall systems in higher dimensions, including fluctuations of the gauge field and metric around background fields of a specified topological class. The result is based on a procedure of integrating up from the Dolbeault index density which applies for the degeneracies of Landau levels, combined with some input from the standard descent procedure for anomalies. Features of the topological action in (2+1), (4+1), (6+1) dimensions, including the contribution due to gravitational anomalies, are discussed in some detail.
