Internal waves in a compressible two-layer atmospheric model: The Hamiltonian description

Slow flows of an ideal compressible fluid (gas) in the gravity field in the presence of two isentropic layers are considered, with a small difference of specific entropy between them. Assuming irrotational flows in each layer [that is ${\bf v}_{1,2}=\nablaϕ_{1,2}$], and neglecting acoustic degrees of freedom by means of the conditions ${div}(\barρ(z)\nablaϕ_{1,2})\approx0$, where $\barρ(z)$ is a mean equilibrium density, we derive equations of motion for the interface in terms of the boundary shape $z=η(x,y,t)$ and the difference of the two boundary values of the velocity potentials: $ψ(x,y,t)=ψ_1-ψ_2$. A Hamiltonian structure of the obtained equations is proved, which is determined by the Lagrangian of the form ${\cal L}=\int \barρ(η)η_tψ\,dx dy -{\cal H}\{η,ψ\}$. The idealized system under consideration is the most simple theoretical model for studying internal waves in a sharply stratified atmosphere, where the decrease of equilibrium gas density with the altitude due to compressibility is essentially taken into account. For planar flows, a generalization is made to the case when in each layer there is a constant potential vorticity. Investigated in more details is the system with a model density profile $\barρ(z)\propto \exp(-2αz)$, for which the Hamiltonian ${\cal H}\{η,ψ\}$ can be expressed explicitly. A long-wave regime is considered, and an approximate weakly nonlinear equation of the form $u_t+auu_x-b[-\hat\partial_x^2+α^2]^{1/2}u_x=0$ (known as Smith's equation) is derived for evolution of a unidirectional wave.

Canonical variables for steep planar water waves over nonuniform bed

An explicit expression in terms of canonical variables is obtained for the Hamiltonian functional determining the fully nonlinear dynamics of two-dimensional potential flows of an ideal fluid with a free surface over an arbitrary nonuniform depth. The canonically conjugate variables are derived from the previously developed non-canonical conformal description of water waves over a strongly undulating bottom [V. P. Ruban, Phys. Rev. E {\bf 70}, 066302 (2004)]. Also an alternative approach to the problem is discussed, which gives weakly nonlinear Hamiltonian models of different orders.

Water wave collapses over quasi-one-dimensional non-uniformly periodic bed profiles

Nonlinear water waves interacting with quasi-one-dimensional, non-uniformly periodic bed profiles are studied numerically in the deep-water regime with the help of approximate equations for envelopes of the forward and backward waves. Spontaneous formation of localized two-dimensional wave structures is observed in the numerical experiments, which looks essentially as a wave collapse.

Two different kinds of rogue waves in weakly-crossing sea states

Formation of giant waves in sea states with two spectral maxima, centered at close wave vectors ${\bf k}_0\pmΔ{\bf k}/2$ in the Fourier plane, is numerically simulated using the fully nonlinear model for long-crested water waves [V. P. Ruban, Phys. Rev. E {\bf 71}, 055303(R) (2005)]. Depending on an angle $θ$ between the vectors ${\bf k}_0$ and $Δ{\bf k}$, which determines a typical orientation of interference stripes in the physical plane, rogue waves arise having different spatial structure. If $θ\lesssim\arctan(1/\sqrt {2})$, then typical giant waves are relatively long fragments of essentially two-dimensional (2D) ridges, separated by wide valleys and consisting of alternating oblique crests and troughs. At nearly perpendicular ${\bf k}_0$ and $Δ{\bf k}$, the interference minima develop to coherent structures similar to the dark solitons of the nonlinear Shroedinger equation, and a 2D freak wave looks much as a piece of a 1D freak wave, bounded in the transversal direction by two such dark solitons.

Water-wave gap solitons: An approximate theory and accurate numerical experiments

It is demonstrated that a standard coupled-mode theory can successfully describe weakly-nonlinear gravity water waves in Bragg resonance with a periodic one-dimensional topography. Analytical solutions for gap solitons provided by this theory are in a reasonable agreement with accurate numerical simulations of exact equations of motion for ideal planar potential free-surface flows, even for strongly nonlinear waves. In numerical experiments, self-localized groups of nearly standing water waves can exist up to hundreds of wave periods. Generalizations of the model to the three-dimensional case are also derived.

Nonlinear stage of the Benjamin-Feir instability: Three-dimensional coherent structures and rogue waves

A specific, genuinely three-dimensional mechanism of rogue wave formation, in a late stage of the modulational instability of a perturbed Stokes deep-water wave, is recognized through numerical experiments. The simulations are based on fully nonlinear equations describing weakly three-dimensional potential flows of an ideal fluid with a free surface in terms of conformal variables. Spontaneous formation of zigzag patterns for wave amplitude is observed in a nonlinear stage of the instability. If initial wave steepness is sufficiently high ($ka>0.06$), these coherent structures produce rogue waves. The most tall waves appear in ``turns'' of the zigzags. For $ka<0.06$, the structures decay typically without formation of steep waves.

Water waves over a time-dependent bottom: Exact description for 2D potential flows

Two-dimensional potential flows of an ideal fluid with a free surface are considered in situations when shape of the bottom depends on time due to external reasons. Exact nonlinear equations describing surface waves in terms of the so called conformal variables are derived for an arbitrary time-evolving bottom parameterized by an analytical function. An efficient numerical method for the obtained equations is suggested.

Water waves over a strongly undulating bottom

Two-dimensional free-surface potential flows of an ideal fluid over a strongly inhomogeneous bottom are investigated with the help of conformal mappings. Weakly-nonlinear and exact nonlinear equations of motion are derived by the variational method for arbitrary seabed shape parameterized by an analytical function. As applications of this theory, band structure of linear waves over periodic bottoms is calculated and evolution of a strong solitary wave running from a deep region to a shallow region is numerically simulated.

Toroidal bubbles with circulation in ideal hydrodynamics. A variational approach

Incompressible, inviscid, irrotational, and unsteady flows with circulation $Γ$ around a distorted toroidal bubble are considered. A general variational principle that determines the evolution of the bubble shape is formulated. For a two-dimensional (2D) cavity with a constant area $A$, exact pseudo-differential equations of motion are derived, based on variables that determine a conformal mapping of the unit circle exterior into the region occupied by the fluid. A closed expression for the Hamiltonian of the 2D system in terms of canonical variables is obtained. Stability of a stationary drifting 2D hollow vortex is demonstrated, when the circulation is relatively large, $gA^{3/2}/Γ^2\ll 1$. For a circulation-dominated regime of three-dimensional flows a simplified Lagrangian is suggested, inasmuch as the bubble shape is well described by the center-line $\g{R}(ξ,t)$ and by an approximately circular cross-section with relatively small area, $A(ξ,t)\ll (\oint |\g{R}'|dξ)^2$. In particular, a finite-dimensional dynamical system is derived and approximately solved for a vertically moving axisymmetric vortex ring bubble with a compressed gas inside.

The hodograph method applicability in the problem of long-scale nonlinear dynamics of a thin vortex filament near a flat boundary

Hamiltonian dynamics of a thin vortex filament in ideal incompressible fluid near a flat fixed boundary is considered at the conditions that at any point of the curve determining shape of the filament the angle between tangent vector and the boundary plane is small, also the distance from a point on the curve to the plane is small in comparison with the curvature radius. The dynamics is shown to be effectively described by a nonlinear system of two (1+1)-dimensional partial differential equations. The hodograph transformation reduces that system to a single linear differential equation of the second order with separable variables. Simple solutions of the linear equation are investigated at real values of spectral parameter $λ$ when the filament projection on the boundary plane has shape of a two-branch spiral or a smoothed angle, depending on the sign of $λ$.

An integrable localized approximation for interaction of two nearly anti-parallel sheets of the generalized vorticity in 2D ideal electron-magnetohydrodynamic flows

The formalism of frozen-in vortex lines for two-dimensional (2D) flows in ideal incompressible electron magnetohydrodynamics (EMHD) is formulated. A localized approximation for nonlinear dynamics of two close sheets of the generalized vorticity is suggested and its integrability by the hodograph method is demonstrated.

Local approximation for contour dynamics in effectively two-dimensional ideal electron-magnetohydrodynamic flows

The evolution of piecewise constant distributions of a conserved quantity related to the frozen-in canonical vorticity in effectively two-dimensional incompressible ideal EMHD flows is analytically investigated by the Hamiltonian method. The study includes the case of axisymmetric flows with zero azimuthal velocity component and also the case of flows with the helical symmetry of vortex lines. For sufficiently large size of such a patch of the conserved quantity, a local approximation in the dynamics of the patch boundary is suggested, based on the possibility to represent the total energy as the sum of area and boundary terms. Only the boundary energy produces deformation of the shape with time. Stationary moving configurations are described.

Current-sheet formation in incompressible electron magnetohydrodynamics

The nonlinear dynamics of axisymmetric, as well as helical, frozen-in vortex structures is investigated by the Hamiltonian method in the framework of ideal incompressible electron magnetohydrodynamics. For description of current-sheet formation from a smooth initial magnetic field, local and nonlocal nonlinear approximations are introduced and partially analyzed that are generalizations of the previously known exactly solvable local model neglecting electron inertia. Finally, estimations are made that predict finite-time singularity formation for a class of hydrodynamic models intermediate between that local model and the Eulerian hydrodynamics.

Slow inviscid flows of a compressible fluid in spatially inhomogeneous systems

An ideal compressible fluid is considered, with an equilibrium density being a given function of coordinates due to presence of some static external forces. The slow flows in such system, which do not disturb the density, are investigated with the help of the Hamiltonian formalism. The equations of motion of the system are derived for an arbitrary given topology of the vorticity field. The general form of the Lagrangian for frozen-in vortex lines is established. The local induction approximation for motion of slender vortex filaments in several inhomogeneous physical models is studied.

Finite time singularities in a class of hydrodynamic models

Models of inviscid incompressible fluid are considered, with the kinetic energy (i.e., the Lagrangian functional) taking the form ${\cal L}\sim\int k^α|{\bf v_k}|^2d^3{\bf k}$ in 3D Fourier representation, where $α$ is a constant, $0<α< 1$. Unlike the case $α=0$ (the usual Eulerian hydrodynamics), a finite value of $α$ results in a finite energy for a singular, frozen-in vortex filament. This property allows us to study the dynamics of such filaments without the necessity of a regularization procedure for short length scales. The linear analysis of small symmetrical deviations from a stationary solution is performed for a pair of anti-parallel vortex filaments and an analog of the Crow instability is found at small wave-numbers. A local approximate Hamiltonian is obtained for the nonlinear long-scale dynamics of this system. Self-similar solutions of the corresponding equations are found analytically. They describe the formation of a finite time singularity, with all length scales decreasing like $(t^*-t)^{1/(2-α)}$, where $t^*$ is the singularity time.

Hydrodynamics of an ultra-relativistic fluid in the flat anisotropic cosmological model

Motion of an ultra-relativistic perfect fluid in space-time with the Kasner metrics is investigated by the Hamiltonian method. It is found that in the limit of small times a tendency takes place to formation of strong inhomogeneities in matter distribution. In the case of slow flows the effect of non-stationary anisotropy on dynamics of sound waves and behaviour of frozen-in vortices is considered. It is shown that hydrodynamics of slow vortices on the static homogeneous background is equivalent to the usual Eulerian incompressible hydrodynamics, but in the presence of an external non-stationary strain velocity field.

Breaking of vortex lines - a new mechanism of collapse in hydrodynamics

A new mechanism of the collapse in hydrodynamics is suggested, due to breaking of continuously distributed vortex lines. Collapse results in formation of the point singularities of the vorticity field $|{\bfΩ}|$. At the collapse point, the value of the vorticity blows up as $(t_0-t)^{-1}$ where $t_0$ is a collapse time. The spatial structure of the collapsing distribution approaches a pancake form: contraction occurs by the law $l_1\sim(t_0-t)^{3/2}$ along the "soft" direction, the characteristic scales vanish like $l_2\sim(t_0-t)^{1/2}$ along two other ("hard") directions. This scenario of the collapse is shown to take place in the integrable three-dimensional hydrodynamics with the Hamiltonian ${\cal H}=\int|{\bfΩ}|d{\bf r}$. Most numerical studies of collapse in the Euler equation are in a good agreement with the proposed theory.

Interaction of a vortex ring with the free surface of ideal fluid

The interaction of a small vortex ring with the free surface of a perfect fluid is considered. In the frame of the point ring approximation the asymptotic expression for the Fourier-components of radiated surface waves is obtained in the case when the vortex ring comes from infinity and has both horizontal and vertical components of the velocity. The non-conservative corrections to the equations of motion of the ring, due to Cherenkov radiation, are derived.
