Weak Antilocalization and topological edge states in PdSn$_4$

Here we report, the successful synthesis of single crystals of topological semimetal (TSM) candidate, PdSn$_4$ using the self-grown route. The synthesized crystal is well characterized through X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Detailed Rietveld analysis of the powder XRD pattern of PdSn$_4$ confirmed the same to crystallize in the Aea2 space group instead of reported Ccce. A large magnetoresistance (MR) along with Subnikov-de Haas oscillations have been observed in magnetotransport measurements at 2K. The presence of a weak antilocalization (WAL) effect in synthesized PdSn$_4$ crystal is confirmed and analyzed using Hikami Larkin Nagaoka (HLN) formalism, being applied on magnetoconductivity of the same at the low magnetic field. An extended Kohler rule is implemented on MR data, to determine the role of the scattering process and temperature-dependent carrier density on transport phenomenon in PdSn$_4$. Further, the non-trivial band topology and presence of edge states are shown through density functional theory (DFT) based theoretical calculations. All calculations are performed considering the Aea2 space group symmetry. The calculated Z2 invariants suggest the presence of weak topological insulating properties in PdSn$_4$. Clear evidence of topological edge states at the $Γ$ point is visible in calculated edge state spectra. This is the first report on PdSn$_4$, showing the presence of SdH oscillation in magneto transport measurement.

Two-fold anisotropic superconducting state in topological superconductor Sn$_4$Au

Here we report the anisotropic magnetotransport properties in the superconducting state of Sn$_4$Au single crystal. Sn$_4$Au single crystal is synthesized through an easy melt growth method. Superconducting properties are evidenced by resistivity vs. temperature and DC magnetization measurements. Isothermal magnetization measurements hint toward type-II superconductivity in Sn$_4$Au. In-plane and out-of-plane resistivity measurements show anisotropic behavior of the upper critical field at temperatures below superconducting transition (T$_c$ = 2.3 K). The observed anisotropy is more elucidated in resistivity measurements performed below Tc at different tilt angles. The anisotropy parameter is found to be 1.26. The observed results show the presence two-fold anisotropic superconducting state in Sn$_4$Au single crystal, which may be induced due to the layered structure of synthesized Sn$_4$Au single crystal.

Detailed structural and topological analysis of SnBi2Te4 single crystal

We report herein the successful synthesis of the topological material SnBi2Te4 in single-crystal form. Phase purity and unidirectional growth are evident from X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns acquired from a powdered sample and a crystal flake. The crystalline morphology has also been visualized by acquiring a field-emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) image. The crystal has been thoroughly characterized by means of Raman spectroscopy and X ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurements. The topological properties of SnBi2Te4 have been probed through magneto-transport measurements. SnBi2Te4 has been found to exhibit a small but non-saturating magneto-resistance (MR) up to 12 T. The low-field magnetoconductivity (MC) of SnBi2Te4 at 2 K can be well explained through the Hikami Larkin Nagaoka (HLN) formalism, which confirms the presence of a weak anti-localization (WAL) effect in its crystal. Moreover, the non-trivial topological character has been evidenced through first-principles calculations using density functional theory (DFT), with and without spin-orbit coupling (SOC) protocols. A significant change in the bulk electronic band structure is observed upon the inclusion of SOC parameters, signifying the topological properties of SnBi2Te4. Its topological non-trivial character has also been verified through the calculation of Z2 invariants and the surface states spectrum in the (111) plane.

Weak antilocalization and ferromagnetism in magnetic Weyl semimetal Co3Sn2S2

Here we report successful synthesis of single crystalline magnetic Weyl semimetal Co3Sn2S2. The synthesized crystal is characterized through various tools viz. X-ray diffraction, field emission electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. A clear ferromagnetic transition is observed in magnetization and heat capacity at around 175K, which is further verified through electrical transport measurements. Hysteresis is observed in R-T measurements in cooling and warming cycle, showing the presence of first order phase transition and charge ordering in the synthesized sample. The synthesized Co3Sn2S2 exhibits high magnetoresistance of around 230% at 2K. The transport phenomenon in synthesized Co3Sn2S2 appears to have contributions from topological surface states at low temperature below say 70 K, and above that the same is found to be strongly dependent on its bulk magnetic state. Magnetoconductivity data at low fields of up to plus minus 1T (Tesla) is fitted with Hikami Larkin Nagaoka model, which shows the presence of weak antilocalization effect in synthesized Co3Sn2S2 crystal at low temperatures below 30K.

Drastic suppression of CDW (charge density wave) by Pd addition in TiSe2

TiSe2 is a known Topological semimetal (TSM) having both the semi-metallic and topological characters simultaneously and the Charge density wave (CDW) at below 200K. In the current short article, we study the impact of Pd addition on the CDW character of TiSe2 and the possible induction of superconductivity at low temperatures. Bulk samples of TiSe2 and Pd0.1TiSe2 are synthesized by solid-state reaction route, which is further characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), respectively, for their structural and micro-structural details. The vibrational modes of both samples are being analyzed by Raman spectroscopy, showing the occurrence of both A1g and Eg modes. CDW of pure TiSe2 seen at around 200K in electrical transport measurements, in terms of sharp semi-metallic to metallic transition peak with hysteresis in cooling/warming cycles is not seen in Pd0.1TiSe2, and rather a near metallic transport is seen down to 2K. Although superconductivity is not seen down to 2K, the CDW transition is seemingly completely suppressed in Pd0.1TiSe2. Pd addition in TiSe2 suppresses CDW drastically. Trials are underway to induce superconductivity in Pd-added TiSe2. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations show primary evidence of suppression of CDW by adding Pd in TiSe2 due to an increase in the density of states.

Shubnikov de Haas (SdH) Oscillation in Self-Flux Grown Rhombohedral Single Crystalline Bismuth

The historic de Haas van Alphen effect observed in the late 1950s in CSIR-NPL by J.S. Dhillon and D. Shoenberg in pure bismuth and zinc metal is revisited in this article hrough a single crystalline phase of bismuth crystal, which is observed in terms of resistivity as predicted by Shubnikov de Haas oscillations. The occurrence of oscillations in the transverse magnetic field confirms the presence of the Fermi surface. The single crystal of bismuth is grown through solid-state reaction under an optimized heat treatment whose purity and structural phase are confirmed through XRD, SEM, and EDAX.

Topological Superconductor AuSn4: A first principle study

Topological semimetals such as Weyl or Dirac semimetals with superconductivity have emerged as a new class of topological materials to realize and study Majorana Fermion. This article reports the Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculated bulk electronic band structure of recently discovered topological superconductor candidate AuSn4. The study has been performed on AuSn4 considering two space groups symmetries viz. Aea2 and Ccce, as reported earlier. This study is further extended to the calculation of Z2 invariants. The Fermi surfaces corresponding to the bands, which are responsible for non-trivial band topology, along with the surface states, are also mapped. The complete study suggests that AuSn4 is a topological semimetal. On AuSn4, it is the first report in the literature showing the non-trivial band topology based on first-principle calculations.

Investigation of structural and magneto-transport properties of PdTe2 single crystals

The growth and structural analysis of topological semimetal (TSM) PdTe2 were carried out in this study. The self-flux method was employed to grow the single crystals which were structurally characterized by XRD, SEM and EDAX, while the vibrational modes were observed by Raman spectroscopy. Further, the transport properties of the grown crystal are also investigated, which show the presence of the weak anti-localization effect. The low field (1Tesla) magnetoconductivity is studied by Hikami-Larkin-Nagaoka (HLN) model, and the physical parameters are extracted. Further, a quadratic term and a linear term in applied field were added in HLN model, which are accounted for quantum and classical contributions in conduction mechanism. The modified HLN model was used to study magneto-conductivity in entire field range and at temperature from 2-100 K. This study not only confirmed the growth of single crystal PdTe2, but also verified the presence of topological surface states (TSS) through the HLN analysis of magneto-transport measurements.

Sn2Pd: a possible superconducting material with topological surface states

In this article, we report the detailed magneto transport measurements of the topological semimetal (TSM) candidate, Sn2Pd. Single crystal of Sn2Pd is synthesized through the self-flux method. Phase purity and crystalline morphology are confirmed through powder X ray diffraction (PXRD) pattern and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) image. Signatures of superconducting transition are seen in both transport and magneto transport measurements, which are further supported by the AC magnetization studies. Sn2Pd is found to show superconductivity onset at below 2.8K, but not the zero resistivity down to 2K. Although, isothermal magneto resistivity measurements below superconducting onset (2.8K) clearly exhibited superconductor-like behavior, but is not observed in heat capacity measurements, indicating the same to be of weak nature. Magnetotransport measurements performed in a normal state of Sn2Pd show the presence of a weak antilocalization (WAL) effect, which is confirmed by modeling of low field magneto-conductivity (MC) through Hikami Larkin Nagaoka (HLN) formalism. Here, it is worth mentioning that the present article is the first report on magneto transport measurements of Sn2Pd, which show the same to be a topological material with a weak superconducting phase below around 2.8K.

Thickness-Dependent Magneto Transport of Bi2Se3/SiO2 Topological Insulator thin films

Topological insulators are immensely investigated for their surface states related properties as these materials can be used for various spintronics, quantum computing, and optoelectronics applications. In this perspective, different thicknesses of bismuth selenide thin films are deposited on the 250 nm SiO2 substrate with the help of thermal deposition. The motive of this study is to investigate the surface and bulk-related behaviour with different thicknesses. The deposited films are characterized through GI-XRD (grazing incidence X-ray diffractometer) and Raman spectroscopy, which ensure the impurity less deposition. Further, the transport properties are investigated, which shows thickness dependence of weak anti-localization effect (WAL) in the system and proposed these Bi2Se3/SiO2 thin films as a topological Anderson insulator (TAI).

Bulk superconductivity and non-trivial band topology analysis of Pb2Pd

A perfect topological superconductor can be realized by the simultaneous existence of bulk superconductivity along with topological non-trivial surface states. In this article, we report single crystal growth of superconducting binary compound Pb2Pd. The crystal is well characterized through X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Selected Area electron diffraction (SAED), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), Field emission Scanning electron Microscopy (FESEM) and X-Ray Photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The bulk superconducting nature of the studied crystal is determined through AC susceptibility and magneto-heat capacity measurements. The specific heat jump at superconducting transition suggests Pb2Pd to be a moderately coupled s-wave superconductor. The topological non-trivial character of Pb2Pd is evidenced through bulk electronic band structure and Z2 invariants, which are calculated under the protocols of Density Functional Theory (DFT). This is the first report on topological invariant of Pb2Pd, showing Pb2Pd to possess non-trivial topological band structure

Probing the topological surface states in superconducting Sn4Au single crystal: A magneto transport study

Materials exhibiting bulk superconductivity along with magnetoresistance (MR) in their normal state have emerged as suitable candidates for topological superconductivity. In this article, we report a flux free method to synthesize single crystal of topological superconductor candidate Sn4Au. The phase purity and single crystalline nature are confirmed through various characterizations viz. X-Ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), selected Area electron diffraction (SAED), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Chemical states of the constituent element viz. Sn and Au are analyzed through X-Ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Superconductivity in synthesized Sn4Au single crystal is evident form R-T plot and critical field (Hc) is determined through R-H plot at 2K i.e., just below critical temperature Tc. A positive magnetoresistance (MR) is observed in R-H measurements at different temperatures above Tc, viz. at 3K, 5K, 10K and 20K. Further, the magnetoconductivity (MC) is analyzed by using Hikami-Larkin-Nagaoka (HLN) formalism, which signifies the presence of weak antilocalization (WAL) effect in Sn4Au. Angle dependent magneto-transport measurement has been performed to detect the origin of the observed WAL effect in Sn4Au single crystal. Normalized MC vs HcosTheta plot shows presence of topological surface states (TSS) in the studied system. It is evident that Sn4Au is a 2.6K topological superconductor.

A comprehensive review on topological superconducting materials and interfaces

Superconductivity in topological materials has drawn a significant interest of the scientific community as these materials provide a hint of the existence of Majorana fermions conceived from the quantized thermal conductivity, a zero-biased conduction peak and the anomalous Josephson effect. In this review, we make a systematic study of recent advances in the field of topological superconductivity. The article comprises of both bulk systems as well as heterostructures. A brief description of Majorana fermions and their relationship with topological superconductors and heterostructures is also carried out. Also, this review consists of details of key experimental techniques to characterize candidates of topological superconductivity. Moreover, we summarize the potential material candidate that may demonstrate topological superconductivity. We also consider some intrinsic odd-parity superconductors, non-centrosymmetric, centrosymmetric superconductors, doped topological insulators, doped topological crystalline insulators and some other materials that are expected to show superconductivity along with topological non-trivial states in bulk from. The effect of pressure, emergence of superconductivity in topological materials and Muon Spin Rotation studies are also summarized in this article.

Detailed magneto-heat capacity analysis of SnAs topological superconductor

In this article, we report magneto-heat capacity analysis of superconducting SnAs, which is characterized through X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and magneto-transport measurements. The studied SnAs superconductor evidenced the presence of superconductivity at around 4K, and the same is seen to persist up to an applied field of 250Oe. The bulk nature of superconductivity is determined through AC susceptibility along with heat capacity measurements. Magneto-heat capacity measurements show SnAs to be a fully gapped s wave superconductor. This finding is well supported by calculated superconducting physical parameters. Further, the calculation of the residual Sommerfeld coefficient at different fields confirms node-less superconductivity in SnAs.

Andreev reflection spectroscopy on SnAs single crystals

Binary compounds of SnT family(T= As, Sb, Te, S, Se, P) exhibit novel properties like superconductivity, topologically protected states etc. Some of these compounds crystallize in NaCl type structure or in layered structure, both of which are considered potentially important for high-temperature/unconventional superconductivity. It was previously shown that K-doped BaBiO$_3$ with NaCl type structure exhibits superconducting state below $\sim$ 30 K. SnAs has crystallographic configuration that is exactly similar to K-doped BaBiO$_3$ and this warrants for the investigation of superconductivity in this material. Previously it was reported that SnAs exhibits weakly coupled type I superconductivity with an energy gap of 0.7 meV. Recently, the electronic bandstructure calculations has hinted to the existence of possible topologically protected states in SnAs. This has motivated us to investigate the superconducting nature of SnAs using point contact Andreev reflection spectroscopy. Our investigation revealed that superconductivity in SnAs can be well explained within the BCS framework in the weak coupling limit.

Accessing Phase Slip Events in Nb Meander Wires

We report transport studies through Nb-based superconducting meander wires fabricated by focused ion beam (FIB) milling technique. The effect of meandering on quantum transport has been probed experimentally by a direct comparison with the pristine thin-film device before meandering. The normal metal (NM) to superconductor (SC) phase transition becomes a wide and multi-step transition by meandering. Below the transition temperature (Tc), the resistance-versus-temperature measurements reveal resistive tailing which is explained by the thermally activated phase slip (TAPS) mechanism. The TAPS fit indicates a selective region of the meander to be responsible for the resistive tailing. Besides, the phase slip (PS) mechanism in the meander is evident in its current-voltage characteristics that feature the stair-case type intermediate resistive steps during the SC-NM transition. The modulation of the intermediate resistive steps is investigated with respect to temperature and external magnetic field. It is observed that the PS events are facilitated by magnetic fields up to about 250 mT. Further, the critical current varies strongly on the temperature and magnetic field for T less than 0.5Tc and H less tahn 100 mT where it fluctuates in an oscillatory manner. Finally, Nb based meander structures can be promising candidates for future PS based studies and applications.

SnAs: a 4K weak type-II superconductor with non-trivial band topology

Superconductors with non-trivial band topology are emerging as one of the best avenues to study quantum anomalies and experimental realization of Majorana Fermions. This article reports the successful crystal growth of superconducting SnAs, which can have topologically non-trivial states, as evidenced in DFT (Density Functional Theory) calculations, Z2 invariants, and topologically surface state. Here, we followed a two-step method to grow SnAs crystal. The powder XRD (X-ray Diffractometry) pattern of synthesized crystal ensures that the crystal is grown in a single phase with a NaCl type cubic structure and the EDAX (Energy Dispersive X-ray Analysis) endorses the stoichiometry of the as-grown sample. The DFT calculations performed with and without the inclusion of spin-orbit coupling (SOC) show band inversion at various K symmetry points near the Fermi level. The recorded Raman spectra show two different modes, which are assigned as A1 and ETO vibrations. The ZFC (Zero-Field Cooled) & FC (Field Cooled), as well as the isothermal M-H (Magnetization vs. field) measurements, are also performed for the topological non-trivial SnAs superconductor, which eventually confirms the weak type-II superconductivity at 4K. Various other superconductivity parameters viz. kappa parameter, coherence length, and penetration depth are also calculated to probe the as-grown sample's characteristics.
