Multiworm algorithm quantum Monte Carlo

We review the path-integral quantum Monte Carlo method and discuss its implementation by multiworm algorithms. We analyze in details the features of the algorithms, and focus our attention on the computation of the $N$-body density matrix to study N-body correlations. Finally, we demonstrate the validity of the algorithms on a system of dipolar bosons trapped in a stack of $N$ one-dimensional layers in the case of zero and finite inter-layer hopping.

Collision of impurities with Bose-Einstein condensates

Quantum dynamics of impurities in a bath of bosons is a long-standing problem of solid-state, plasma, and atomic physics. Recent experimental and theoretical investigations with ultracold atoms focused on this problem, studying atomic impurities immersed in a atomic Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) and for various relative coupling strengths tuned by the Fano-Feshbach resonance technique. Here we report extensive numerical simulations on a closely related problem: the collision between a bosonic impurity made of few $^{41}$K atoms and a BEC made of $^{87}$Rb atoms in a quasi one-dimensional configuration and under a weak harmonic axial confinement. For small values of the interspecies interaction strength (no matter the sign of it), we find that the impurity, which starts from outside the BEC, simply oscillates back and forth the BEC cloud, but the frequency of oscillation depends on the interaction strength. For intermediate couplings, after a few cycles of oscillation the impurity is captured by the BEC and strongly changes its amplitude of oscillation. In the strong interaction regime, if the interspecies interaction is attractive, a local maximum (bright soliton) in the density of BEC occurs where the impurity is trapped; instead, if the interspecies interaction is repulsive, the impurity is not able to enter in the BEC cloud and the reflection coefficient is close to one. On the other hand, if the initial displacement of the impurity is increased, the impurity is able to penetrate in the cloud leading to the appearance of a moving hole (dark soliton) in the BEC.

A continuous-variable approach to the spectral properties and quantum states of the two-component Bose-Hubbard dimer

A bosonic gas formed by two interacting species trapped in a double-well potential features macroscopic localization effects when the interspecies interaction becomes sufficiently strong. A repulsive interaction spatially separates the species into different wells while an attractive interaction confines both species in the same well. We perform a fully-analytic study of the transitions from the weak- to the strong-interaction regime by exploiting the semiclassical method in which boson populations are represented in terms of continuous variables. We find an explict description of low-energy eigenstates and spectrum in terms of the model parameters which includes the neighborhood of the transition point. To test the effectiveness of the continuous-variable method we compare its predictions with the exact results found numerically. Numerical calculations confirm the spectral collapse evidenced by this method when the space localization takes place.

Itinerant ferromagnetism of two-dimensional repulsive fermions with Rabi coupling

We study a two-dimensional fermionic cloud of repulsive alkali-metal atoms characterized by two hyperfine states which are Rabi coupled. Within a variational Hartree-Fock scheme, we calculate analytically the ground-state energy of the system. Then we determine the conditions under which there is a quantum phase transition with spontaneous symmetry breaking from a spin-balanced configuration to a spin-polarized one, an effect known as itinerant ferromagnetism. Interestingly, we find that the transition appears when the interaction energy per particle exceedes both the kinetic energy per particle and the Rabi coupling energy. The itinerant ferromagnetism of the polarized phase is analyzed, obtaining the population imbalance as a function of interaction strength, Rabi coupling, and number density. Finally, the inclusion of a external harmonic confinement is investigated by adopting the local density approximation. We predict that a single atomic cloud can display population imbalance near the center of the trap and a fully balanced configuration at the periphery.

Thermometry of bosonic mixtures in Optical Lattices via Demixing

Motivated by recent experiments and theoretical investigations on binary mixtures, we investigate the miscible-immiscible transition at finite temperature by means of Quantum Monte Carlo. Based on the observation that the segregated phase is strongly affected by temperature, we propose to use the degree of demixing for thermometry of a binary bosonic mixture trapped in an optical lattice. We show that the proposed method is especially sensitive at low temperatures, of the order of the tunnelling amplitude, and therefore is particularly suitable in the regime where quantum magnetism is expected.

Delocalization effects, entanglement entropy and spectral collapse of boson mixtures in a double well

We investigate the ground-state properties of a two-species condensate of interacting bosons in a double-well potential. Each atomic species is described by a two-space-mode Bose-Hubbard model. The coupling of the two species is controlled by the interspecies interaction $W$. To analyze the ground state when $W$ is varied in both the repulsive ($W>0$) and the attractive ($W<0$) regime, we apply two different approaches. First we solve the problem numerically i) to obtain an exact description of the ground-state structure and ii ) to characterize its correlation properties by studying (the appropriate extensions to the present case of) the quantum Fisher information, the coherence visibility and the entanglement entropy as functions of $W$. Then we approach analytically the description of the low-energy scenario by means of the Bogoliubov scheme. In this framework the ground-state transition from delocalized to localized species (with space separation for $W>0$, and mixing for $W<0$) is well reproduced. These predictions are qualitatively corroborated by our numerical results. We show that such a transition features a spectral collapse reflecting the dramatic change of the dynamical algebra of the four-mode model Hamiltonian.

Demixing Effects in Mixtures of Two Bosonic Species

Motivated by recent experiments on two-component systems, we investigate the ground-state phase diagram of a mixture of two bosonic species by means of path-integral quantum Monte Carlo by the two-worm algorithm. The mixture is trapped in a square lattice at half-filling conditions. Various quantum phases are stabilized depending on the interplay between intra- and inter-species interactions. We show that the phase diagram features a demixed superfluid phase and demixed Mott-Insulator phase when the inter-species interaction becomes greater than the intra-species repulsion, and a double-superfluid phase or a supercounterflow otherwise. We also show that demixing, characterized by spatial separation of the two species, can be detected experimentally through the effects of anisotropy revealed by time-of-flight images.

Entanglement entropy and macroscopic quantum states with dipolar bosons in a triple-well potential

We study interacting dipolar atomic bosons in a triple-well potential within a ring geometry. This system is shown to be equivalent to a three-site Bose-Hubbard model. We analyze the ground state of dipolar bosons by varying the effective on-site interaction. This analysis is performed both numerically and analytically by using suitable coherent-state representations of the ground state. The latter exhibits a variety of forms ranging from the su(3) coherent state in the delocalization regime to a macroscopic cat-like state with fully localized populations, passing for a coexistence regime where the ground state displays a mixed character. We characterize the quantum correlations of the ground state from the bi-partition perspective. We calculate both numerically and analytically (within the previous coherent-state representation) the single-site entanglement entropy which, among various interesting properties, exhibits a maximum value in correspondence to the transition from the cat-like to the coexistence regime. In the latter case, we show that the ground-state mixed form corresponds, semiclassically, to an energy exhibiting two almost-degenerate minima.

Mott Insulator to Superfluid transition in Bose-Bose mixtures in a two-dimensional lattice

We perform a numeric study (Worm algorithm Monte Carlo simulations) of ultracold two-component bosons in two-dimensional optical lattices. We study how the Mott insulator to superfluid transition is affected by the presence of a second superfluid bosonic species. We find that, at fixed interspecies interaction, the upper and lower boundaries of the Mott lobe are differently modified. The lower boundary is strongly renormalized even for relatively low filling factor of the second component and moderate (interspecies) interaction. The upper boundary, instead, is affected only for large enough filling of the second component. Whereas boundaries are renormalized we find evidence of polaron-like excitations. Our results are of interest for current experimental setups.

Quantum signatures of self-trapping transition in attractive lattice bosons

We consider the Bose-Hubbard model describing attractive bosonic particles hopping across the sites of a translation-invariant lattice, and compare the relevant ground-state properties with those of the corresponding symmetry-breaking semiclassical nonlinear theory. The introduction of a suitable measure allows us to highlight many correspondences between the nonlinear theory and the inherently linear quantum theory, characterized by the well-known self-trapping phenomenon. In particular we demonstrate that the localization properties and bifurcation pattern of the semiclassical ground-state can be clearly recognized at the quantum level. Our analysis highlights a finite-number effect.

Control of unstable macroscopic oscillations in the dynamics of three coupled Bose condensates

We study the dynamical stability of the macroscopic quantum oscillations characterizing a system of three coupled Bose-Einstein condensates arranged into an open-chain geometry. The boson interaction, the hopping amplitude and the central-well relative depth are regarded as adjustable parameters. After deriving the stability diagrams of the system, we identify three mechanisms to realize the transition from an unstable to stable behavior and analyze specific configurations that, by suitably tuning the model parameters, give rise to macroscopic effects which are expected to be accessible to experimental observation. Also, we pinpoint a system regime that realizes a Josephson-junction-like effect. In this regime the system configuration do not depend on the model interaction parameters, and the population oscillation amplitude is related to the condensate-phase difference. This fact makes possible estimating the latter quantity, since the measure of the oscillating amplitudes is experimentally accessible.

Glassy features of a Bose Glass

We study a two-dimensional Bose-Hubbard model at a zero temperature with random local potentials in the presence of either uniform or binary disorder. Many low-energy metastable configurations are found with virtually the same energy as the ground state. These are characterized by the same blotchy pattern of the, in principle, complex nonzero local order parameter as the ground state. Yet, unlike the ground state, each island exhibits an overall random independent phase. The different phases in different coherent islands could provide a further explanation for the lack of coherence observed in experiments on Bose glasses.

Unconventional quantum phases of lattice bosonic mixtures

We consider strongly interacting boson-boson mixtures on one-dimensional lattices and, by adopting a qualitative mean-field approach, investigate their quantum phases as the interspecies repulsion is increased. In particular, we analyze the low-energy "quantum emulsion" metastable states occurring at large values of the interspecies interaction, which are expected to prevent the system from reaching its true ground state. We argue a significant decrease in the visibility of the time-of-flight images in the case of these spontaneously disordered states.

Gutzwiller approach to the Bose-Hubbard model with random local impurities

Recently it has been suggested that fermions whose hopping amplitude is quenched to extremely low values provide a convenient source of local disorder for lattice bosonic systems realized in current experiment on ultracold atoms. Here we investigate the phase diagram of such systems, which provide the experimental realization of a Bose-Hubbard model whose local potentials are randomly extracted from a binary distribution. Adopting a site-dependent Gutzwiller description of the state of the system, we address one- and two-dimensional lattices and obtain results agreeing with previous findings, as far as the compressibility of the system is concerned. We discuss the expected peaks in the experimental excitation spectrum of the system, related to the incompressible phases, and the superfluid character of the {\it partially compressible phases} characterizing the phase diagram of systems with binary disorder. In our investigation we make use of several analytical results whose derivation is described in the appendices, and whose validity is not limited to the system under concern.

Some remarks on the coherent-state variational approach to nonlinear boson models

The mean-field pictures based on the standard time-dependent variational approach have widely been used in the study of nonlinear many-boson systems such as the Bose-Hubbard model. The mean-field schemes relevant to Gutzwiller-like trial states $|F>$, number-preserving states $|ξ>$ and Glauber-like trial states $|Z>$ are compared to evidence the specific properties of such schemes. After deriving the Hamiltonian picture relevant to $|Z>$ from that based on $|F>$, the latter is shown to exhibit a Poisson algebra equipped with a Weyl-Heisenberg subalgebra which preludes to the $|Z>$-based picture. Then states $|Z>$ are shown to be a superposition of $\cal N$-boson states $|ξ>$ and the similarities/differences of the $|Z>$-based and $|ξ>$-based pictures are discussed. Finally, after proving that the simple, symmetric state $|ξ>$ indeed corresponds to a SU(M) coherent state, a dual version of states $|Z>$ and $|ξ>$ in terms of momentum-mode operators is discussed together with some applications.

Mixtures of strongly interacting bosons in optical lattices

We investigate the properties of strongly interacting heteronuclear boson-boson mixtures loaded in realistic optical lattices, with particular emphasis on the physics of interfaces. In particular, we numerically reproduce the recent experimental observation that the addition of a small fraction of K induces a significant loss of coherence in Rb, providing a simple explanation. We then investigate the robustness against the inhomogeneity typical of realistic experimental realizations of the glassy quantum emulsions recently predicted to occur in strongly interacting boson-boson mixtures on ideal homogeneous lattices.

Mean-field phase diagram for Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonians with random hopping

The zero-temperature phase diagram for ultracold Bosons in a random 1D potential is obtained through a site-decoupling mean-field scheme performed over a Bose-Hubbard (BH) Hamiltonian whose hopping term is considered as a random variable. As for the model with random on-site potential, the presence of disorder leads to the appearance of a Bose-glass phase. The different phases -i.e. Mott insulator, superfluid, Bose-glass- are characterized in terms of condensate fraction and superfluid fraction. Furthermore, the boundary of the Mott lobes are related to an off-diagonal Anderson model featuring the same disorder distribution as the original BH Hamiltonian.

Mean-field phase diagram of cold lattice bosons in disordered potentials

We show that a site-dependent mean-field approach captures the quantum phases of the disordered Bose-Hubbard model commonly adopted to describe ultracold bosons in random optical lattice potentials. The different phases, namely superfluid, Mott insulator, Bose-glass and -- at finite temperature -- normal fluid, are characterized by means of the superfluid and condensate fractions, and compressibility of the system. We point out that both the boundaries of the Mott lobes and the nature of the phase surrounding them are related to the spectral features of a purely off-diagonal non-interacting Anderson model. We compare our results to other works.
