Ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic dimer splittings in LaMn0.1Ga0.9O3

Inelastic neutron scattering was employed to study the magnetic excitations of Mn3+ dimers in LaMn0.1Ga0.9O3. The nearest-neighbor interaction of Mn3+ ions is ferromagnetic in the basal (a,b)-plane, but antiferromagnetic along the c-direction, thus two different types of dimer excitations are simultaneously present in the experiments. From the observed energy spectra we derive Heisenberg-type exchange interactions Jab=0.210(4) meV and Jc=-0.285(5) meV as well as an axial anisotropy parameter D=0.036(6) meV. These parameters considerably differ from those derived for the isostructural parent compound LaMnO3 due to structural effects.

Temperature and pressure evolution of the crystal structure of Ax(Fe1-ySe)2 (A = Cs, Rb, K) studied by synchrotron powder diffraction

Temperature-dependent synchrotron powder diffraction on Cs0.83(Fe0.86Se)2 revealed first order I4/m to I4/mmm structural transformation around 216°C associated with the disorder of the Fe vacancies. Irreversibility observed during the transition is likely associated with a mobility of intercalated Alkali atoms. Pressure-dependent synchrotron powder diffraction on Cs0.83(Fe1-ySe)2, Rb0.85(Fe1-ySe)2 and K0.8(Fe1-ySe)2 (y ~ 0.14) indicated that the I4/m superstructure reflections are present up to pressures of 120 kbar. This may indicate that the ordering of the Fe vacancies is present in both superconducting and non-superconductive states.

Coexistence of Magnetism and Superconductivity in the Iron-based Compound Cs_0.8(FeSe_0.98)_2

We report on muon-spin rotation/relaxation (\muSR), electrical resistivity, magnetization and differential scanning calorimetry measurements performed on a high-quality single crystal of Cs_0.8(FeSe_0.98)_2. Whereas our transport and magnetization data confirm the bulk character of the superconducting state below T_c = 28.5(2)K, the \muSR data indicate that the system is {\it magnetic} below T_N = 478.5(3)K, where a first-order transition occurs. The first-order character of the magnetic transition is confirmed by differential scanning calorimetry data. Taken all together, these data indicate in Cs_0.8(FeSe_0.98)_2 a microscopic coexistence between the superconducting phase and a strong magnetic phase. The observed ratio between T_N and T_c is the highest one reported to date for a magnetic superconductor.

Synthesis and crystal growth of Cs0.8(FeSe0.98)2: a new iron-based superconductor with Tc=27K

We report on the synthesis of large single crystals of a new FeSe-layer superconductor Cs0.8(FeSe0.98)2. X-ray powder diffraction, neutron powder-diffraction and magnetization measurements have been used to compare the crystal structure and the magnetic properties of Cs0.8(FeSe0.98)2 with those of the recently discovered potassium intercalated system KxFe2Se2. The new compound Cs0.8(FeSe0.98)2 shows a slightly lower superconducting transition temperature (Tc=27.4 K) in comparison to 29.5 in K0.8(FeSe0.98)2). The volume of the crystal unit cell increases by replacing K by Cs - the c-parameter grows from 14.1353(13) Å to 15.2846(11) Å. For the so far known alkali metal intercalated layered compounds (K0.8Fe2Se2 and Cs0.8(FeSe0.98)2) the Tc dependence on the anion height (distance between Fe-layers and Se-layers) was found to be analogous to those reported for As-containing Fe-superconductors and Fe(Se1-xChx), where Ch=Te, S.

Doping and temperature dependence of Mn 3d states in A-site ordered manganites

We present a systematic study of the electronic structure in A-site ordered manganites as function of doping and temperature. The energy dependencies observed with soft x-ray resonant diffraction (SXRD) at the Mn L_{2,3} edges are compared with structural investigations using neutron powder diffraction as well as with cluster calculations. The crystal structures obtained with neutron powder diffraction reflect the various orbital and charge ordered phases and show an increase of the Mn-O-Mn bond angle as function of doping and temperature. Cluster calculations show that the observed spectral changes in SXRD as a function of doping are more pronounced than expected from an increase in bandwitdh due to the increase in Mn-O-Mn bond angle, and are best described by holes that are distributed at the neighbouring oxygen ions. These holes are not directly added to the Mn 3d shell, but centered at the Mn site. In contrast, the spectral changes in SXRD as function of temperature are best described by an increase of magnetic correlations. This demonstrates the strong correlations between orbitals and magnetic moments of the 3d states.

Iron isotope effect on the superconducting transition temperature and the crystal structure of FeSe_1-x

The Fe isotope effect (Fe-IE) on the transition temperature T_c and the crystal structure was studied in the Fe chalcogenide superconductor FeSe_1-x by means of magnetization and neutron powder diffraction (NPD). The substitution of natural Fe (containing \simeq 92% of ^{56}Fe) by its lighter ^{54}Fe isotope leads to a shift of T_c of 0.22(5)K corresponding to an Fe-IE exponent of α_Fe=0.81(15). Simultaneously, a small structural change with isotope substitution is observed by NDP which may contribute to the total Fe isotope shift of T_c.

Anisotropic superconducting properties of single-crystalline FeSe0.5Te0.5

Iron-chalcogenide single crystals with the nominal composition FeSe$_{0.5}$Te$_{0.5}$ and a transition temperature of $T_{c}\simeq14.6$ K were synthesized by the Bridgman method. The structural and anisotropic superconducting properties of those crystals were investigated by means of single crystal X-ray and neutron powder diffraction, SQUID and torque magnetometry, and muon-spin rotation. Room temperature neutron powder diffraction reveals that 95% of the crystal volume is of the same tetragonal structure as PbO. The structure refinement yields a stoichiometry of Fe_1.045Se_0.406Te_0.594. Additionally, a minor hexagonal Fe_7Se_8 impurity phase was identified. The magnetic penetration depth λat zero temperature was found to be 491(8) nm in the ab-plane and 1320(14) nm along the c-axis. The zero-temperature value of the superfluid density ρ_s(0) λ^-2(0) obeys the empirical Uemura relation observed for various unconventional superconductors, including cuprates and iron-pnictides. The temperature dependences of both λ_ab and λ_c are well described by a two-gap s+s-wave model with the zero-temperature gap values of Δ_S(0)=0.51(3) meV and Δ_L(0)=2.61(9) meV for the small and the large gap, respectively. The magnetic penetration depth anisotropy parameter γ_λ(T)=λ_c(T)/λ_{ab}(T) increases with decreasing temperature, in agreement with γ_λ(T) observed in the iron-pnictide superconductors.

Single magnetic chirality in the magneto-electric NdFe$_3$($^{11}$BO$_3$)$_4$

We have performed an extensive study of single-crystals of the magneto-electric NdFe$_3$($^{11}$BO$_3$)$_4$ by means of a combination of single-crystal neutron diffraction and spherical neutron polarimetry. Our investigation did not detect significant deviations at low temperatures from space group R32 concerning the chemical structure. With respect to magnetic ordering our combined results demonstrate that in the commensurate magnetic phase below T$_N$~30 K all three magnetic Fe moments and the magnetic Nd moment are aligned ferromagnetically in the basal hexagonal plane but align antiferromagnetically between adjacent planes. The phase transition to the low-temperature incommensurate magnetic structure observed at T$_{IC}$~13.5 K appears to be continuous. By means of polarized neutron studies it could be shown that in the incommensurate magnetic phase the magnetic structure of NdFe$_3$($^{11}$BO$_3$)$_4$ is transformed into a long-period antiferromagnetic helix with single chirality. Close to the commensurate-incommensurate phase transition third-order harmonics were observed which in addition indicate the formation of magnetic solitons.

Magnetic excitations in the spin-trimer compounds Ca3Cu3-xNix(PO4)4 (x=0,1,2)

Inelastic neutron scattering experiments were performed for the spin-trimer compounds Ca3Cu3-xNix(PO4)4 (x=0,1,2) in order to study the dynamic magnetic properties. The observed excitations can be associated with transitions between the low-lying electronic states of linear Cu-Cu-Cu, Cu-Cu-Ni, and Ni-Cu-Ni trimers which are the basic constituents of the title compounds. The exchange interactions within the trimers are well described by the Heisenberg model with dominant antiferromagnetic nearest-neighbor interactions J. For x=0 we find JCu-Cu=-4.74(2) meV which is enhanced for x=1 to JCu-Cu=-4.92(6) meV. For x=1 and x=2 we find JCu-Ni=-0.85(10) meV and an axial single-ion anisotropy parameter DNi=-0.7(1) meV. While the x=0 and x=1 compounds do not exhibit long-range magnetic ordering down to 1 K, the x=2 compound shows antiferromagnetic ordering below TN=20 K, which is compatible with the molecular-field parameter 0.63(12) meV derived by neutron spectroscopy.

Structural properties in Sr0.61a0.39Nb2O6 in the temperature range 10 K to 500 K investigated by high-resolution neutron powder diffraction and specific heat measurements

We report high-resolution neutron powder diffraction on Sr0.61Ba0.39Nb2O6, SBN61, in the temperature range 15-500 K. The results indicate that the low-temperature anomalies (T<100K) observed in the dielectric dispersion are due to small changes in the incommensurate modulation of the NbO6-octahedra, as no structural phase transition of the average structure was observed. This interpretation is supported by specific heat measurements, which show no latent heat, but a glass-like behavior at low temperatures. Furthermore we find that the structural changes connected with the ferroelectric phase transition at Tc approx. 350K start already at 200K, explaining the anisotropic thermal expansion in the temperature range 200-300K observed in a recent x-ray diffraction study.

Simultaneous Antiferromagnetic Fe3+ and Nd3+ Ordering in NdFe3(11BO3)4

By means of magnetic susceptibility and specific heat measurements, x-ray and unpolarised neutron diffraction investigations on powder and single-crystal samples, simultaneous long-range antiferromagnetic Fe and Nd ordering in NdFe3(11BO3)4 with R 3 2 chemical structure has been found at temperatures below TN = 30.5(5) K down to 1.6 K. At temperatures down to 20 K to the propagation vector is khex = [0,0,3/2] and becomes slightly incommensurate at lower temperatures. Symmetry analysis yields magnetic spiral configurations with the magnetic moments oriented parallel to hexagonal basal plane according to the irreducible representations tau_3 in the commensurate case. This is in agreement with the easy directions of magnetisation perpendicular to the c-axis as determined by magnetic susceptibility measurements. At 1.6 K the magnetic Fe moment amounts to 4.9 muB close to the free ion moment of Fe3+. The magnetic Nd3+ moment saturates presumably due to crystal-field effects at 2.7 muB.

Anomalous pressure dependence of the atomic displacements in the relaxor ferroelectric PbMg$_{1/3}$Ta$_{2/3}$O$_3$

The crystal structure of the PbMg$_{1/3}$Ta$_{2/3}$O$_3$ (PMT) relaxor ferroelectric was studied under hydrostatic pressure up to $\sim 7$ GPa by means of powder neutron diffraction. We find a drastic pressure-induced decrease of the lead displacement from the inversion centre which correlates with an increase by $\sim$ 50 % of the anisotropy of the oxygen temperature factor. The vibrations of the Mg/Ta are, in contrast, rather pressure insensitive. We attribute these changes being responsible for the previously reported pressure-induced suppression of the anomalous dielectric permittivity and diffuse scattering in relaxor ferroelectrics.

Symmetry analysis of k = (1/3,1/3,0) three-sublattice ordering in A14B51 compounds

Bulk magnetic, X-ray and neutron diffraction measurements were performed on polycrystalline Tb14Ag51 in the temperature range from 1.5 K to room temperature. Its chemical Gd14Ag51 type structure corresponds to space group P6/m. Combined with group theoretical symmetry analysis, we show that the magnetic structure of this intermetallic compound is of a new k = (1/3,1/3,0) type with three magnetic Tb sublattices ordering simultaneously below TN = 27.5(5) K according to the combined irreducible representations tau4 and tau6. Here we present a general analysis of possible magnetic A ordering for k = (1/3,1/3,0) in A14B51 compounds.
